Love and Pain Or, "Vampire"
Edvard Munch

The truth is, Munch did not title this painting "Vampire." He called it "Love and Pain" and it was only later that it picked up the name and interpretation of a man locked in a vampire's embrace. Munch maintained it was nothing more than a woman kissing a man on the neck. The Nazis declared it morally 'degenerate.' In the painting, we see a man in anguish, arms around his love, while she tries to comfort him. Perhaps she is laying her face on his shoulder even. Some thought it was about his visits to prostitutes, yet others saw it as some sort of macabre fantasy about the death of his favorite sister. Evidently Munch remained ambiguous about the deeper meaning behind it.

It was considered shocking when it was unveiled, somehow people saw sado-masochism in it. Maybe it's her loose red hair and red dress that mark her as a siren. The darkness surrounding them, and the man's own black clothing make her stand out all the more. But is it really shocking today?

I don't see the "vampire" or "shocking" thing at all here.

Notice the darkness (sorrow?) enfolding the man and woman comes from the man-

and that she (and her love) is the only brightness and the light within that darkness.

49 Semi-willowed so here it is again:

Saw "Alien: Covenant" yesterday-

There will be some SPOILERY STUFF so avoid if you haven't seen it and wish to-
*
*
*
*
*
Okay, this iteration of "Alien" still brings the stupid pretty heavily throughout, but-

it doesn't seem quite as stupid because the emphasis this time is on horror action so you aren't given as much time to contemplate the stupid as in "Prometheus" where it was all about the "mystery of human life".

How stupid?

Well, once again they land on a perfect, Earth-like planet, with cultivated Wheat even, and it never occurs to these Space Morons that an Earth-like planet would be loaded with Earth-like variations of viruses, bacteria, protozoa- which would be deadly.

So, they're off once again traipsing around the planet, picking daisies, and dancing the maypole.

At least, throw science a bone here, have a ten second conversation where "the integrated holistic endangerator" shows no pathogens of any consequence in air, soil, or water. Done.

But, that's not all, two of the crew members almost instantly get secretly infected by spitting puffballs.
And suddenly manifest horrible hemorrhagic virus-like symptoms. Almost instantly.

So, of course, they're instantly brought into the ship. Not isolated. Not observed and treated outside. Nope. Into the ship.

Hijinks ensue.

This is not the intelligent "Alien" horror show you were hoping for-

so just consider it a throwback to 1950s sci-fi with everyone wandering around bare-faced in Space Rompers and let it go.

"Alien: Covenant" really is a throwback to something like "House of Dracula" where the creepy dude invites you into his creepy house to do creepy things.....to Space Morons (the bad kind).

One scene still sticks out as the Stupidest Scene in the Whole Alien Series -

the captain after seeing David, the creepy evil cyborg, make kiss-faces to the Oppressive White Xenomorph that just killed one of his crew-

follows David around after seeing how shocked and angry David was that he, the Captain killed the Misogynystic White Xenomorph-

while David is explaining that he has been experimenting on all the life-forms on this planet to develop and improve the Xenophobic White Xenomorph-

and brings the captain into a dark chamber to show him the creepy looking Alien egg-pod thingys as his ultimate version of the Homophobic White Xenomorph-

And the creepy looking pod-dealio opens up it's veiny, slimy Space Labia of Doom and David invites the captain to look inside becuz it's awesome(!)-

And the captain, instead of shooting David, shooting the pods and getting the hell out of there
sez-

"Okey-Doke" and sticks his head in the pod.

You can guess what follows.

Aaaaaanyway, "Alien:Covenant"-

The Good-

Some great action scenes, creepy Alien stuff

The Bad -

Plotting still "Prometheus" quality but you think about it less becuz...great action scenes. Still, enough time between scenes that I was rewriting the movie in my head(not a good sign).

The Meh -

they really missed out on a great horror moment with the big reveal between David and the 2nd in command. Really missed.

Expect, a really well-shot and directed 1950s sic-fi flick mashed up with a 1930s haunted house flick and you'll have a good time.

Oh...and you get to learn that the whole Alien foofaraw, all of it, every bit of it, was caused by-

a cyborg being ordered to pour a cup of tea.

So, treat your robots well.

That's the moral of this story.

This is my theory about how it got the vampire name. Munch's style was still very radical, painting at the end of the 19th century. People still thought the Impressionists were rebels. Then Munch comes along and heads explode. Second, it shows a man in a position of weakness at a time of masculinity-uber-alles. The ambiguous and the seemingly-dominate position of the woman also added to the critique.

It is a depiction of the needless suffering caused by transphobic societal prejudices.

Munch's work is definitely based on personal taste. I like this one, but he was an Expressionist. Their work is very personal to themselves. They are trying to express something deep and abstract, and usually the results are dark, disturbing or negative in some way. I'm having a difficult time thinking of a happy Expressionist.

194 USAA has been awful for about 5 years. I haven't run the comps on my house recently, but if I've got enough escrow in there it may be worth pulling my mortgage from them and giving it to Navy Federal.

Seriously, if you're with them, pray you don't have to make a claim. We've had to make three piddly claims over the last few years (under a grand) and every time it took four one-hour phone calls minimum just to get them moving on the claim. Usually a few hours on the phone with follow up, too.

I don't generally boycott, but if you're wih USAA maybe think about your options before you really need them.

I think most cars' airbags are designed to deploy in front end collisions, not necessarily when being rear ended.

The sensors for the airbags are in the bumper of my car (and I have sensors for the side airbags in the sidewall behind the drivers door, IIRC).

As far as I know, there are no sensors in the rear bumper (of my car at least).

Oh, and you have to hit something pretty f'ing hard for the airbags to deploy.

Airbags are super expensive to re-pack and can often lead to injuries, so car companies are walking a fine line between airbags deploying when needed and not deploying for minor fender benders.

Please watch the short video in which Jo and Jack Babbitt , who are providing $12.5 M in seed money for construction(ground breaking took place in April) are interviewed and who explain their early life experiences, Jack as a WWII pilot and Jo's brothers who were captured by the Germans, and how prayer and worship are central to not just their lives, but to an educated civilization. Larry Arnn (Hillsdale president and an education advisor to the Trump campaign) explains why university and colleges must teach religious education to truly provide a liberal arts education. 237 With regards to the painting, it makes me tear up. The woman draws the eye, but it's the man's position that really tugs at my heart. He's clearly deep in sorrow, clinging to this woman for comfort. Generally the positions are reversed, and you see the woman cocooned in a man's embrace. The reversal gives the title, "Love and Pain," so much more weight. It's genuinely moving.

Sounds like Detroit's Loren D. Estleman -- I think that was his first novel. He's since produced some top-notch hardboiled private eye stories, some fictionalized histories of events (like the 1967 riots) in Detroit, and some of the best Westerns since Louis L'Amour. If Clint Eastwood were a young man now, he'd probably want to play Estleman's lawman Paige Murdock.

Posted by: deplorable Jewells45 at May 25, 2017 10:38 AM (zRZaJ)

I'm just guessing here, but if she was stopped, then hit and pushed in to a car in front of her, I'm not sure there would have been enough velocity for the airbag sensors to register an accident major enough to deploy the airbags. Airbags are designed to stop your forward momentum when the cars forward momentum is stopped by hitting something (so if your car goes from 60 to 0 in a second due to colliding with something, the airbags are there to make sure you do, too, and don't go flying through the windshield and/or break your neck)

For those of you who would like to know that there are still colleges in
the USA that teach thinking, history, and Western Christian values,
please go to the link below It is to Hillsdale College's video and page
describing the new Christ Chapel being built on campus to provide a
dedicated building in which one of the tenets of the college can be
held, and that is religious freedom and worship.

Please watch the short video in which Jo and Jack Babbitt , who are
providing $12.5 M in seed money for construction(ground breaking took
place in April) are interviewed and who explain their early life
experiences, Jack as a WWII pilot and Jo's brothers who were captured by
the Germans, and how prayer and worship are central to not just their
lives, but to an educated civilization. Larry Arnn (Hillsdale president
and an education advisor to the Trump campaign) explains why university
and colleges must teach religious education to truly provide a liberal
arts education. Well worth the few minutes to watch.

I wondered who Jack Babbitt was , he was the founder of Devco in Tulsa OK, which is a natural gas and sulfur producer. Last year the Tulsa World newspaper did an interview of him to remember his time as a pilot. Good article in which he describes dropping food to the starving Dutch citizens and what it was like to be 22 and in war.

Airbags are meant to deploy if your car gets hit from the front or side, or in a rollover, on newer models. Not so much from a rear-end hit.

Your friend might want to seek the services of an accident reconstructionist. These are people who are trained to analyze the forces and events of a collision, often with a view to determining fault.

If it came down to a lawsuit against the car manufacturer, you can be sure the lawyers for the manufacturer would be hiring the best reconstructionists in the business to defend their case.

I like Rathbone better than Brett, but Brett had the better scripts etc. Cumberbland does a good job, but what saves his portrayal is the great Watson -- you can see the friendship that somehow survives. Elementary is awful because Holmes is good, but Watsonlady is stupid and irritating. Holmes depends on Watson -- anyone can play a quirky genius -- but who can show how they work together is where Watson is key.

There was a rear end accident in town about a month ago that killed a little girl (not sure of age 8-12 I think). Family was stopped at a light when they were plowed into and driven into car in front. Parents in front seat were okay, but girl was nonresponsive and died shortly after.

Turns out woman driving was *extremely* drunk at 6 pm. Now her kids will be without their mother while she spends years in jail for killing a little girl who was just on her way to pick up her brother after sports practice.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 25, 2017 10:57 AM (XUcIQ)

I meant repack in the colloquial sense. They have to replace the entire airbag system. My cousin was quoted like $4k to replace his on his POS car after he hit a deer.

His insurance company was trying to slime out of paying -- typically hitting a deer is covered by collision insurance, not liability (which he did not have at the time.)

Last I heard their offer was $1500 to total out the car, and he has just been driving around with deployed airbags like an idiot.

341 Cumberbland does a good job, but what saves his portrayal is the great Watson -- you can see the friendship that somehow survives. Elementary is awful because Holmes is good, but Watsonlady is stupid and irritating. Holmes depends on Watson -- anyone can play a quirky genius -- but who can show how they work together is where Watson is key.
*
*
Yes. Doyle's Watson was much like himself, with the Victorian attitudes of the day and many of the same experiences as a doctor. The character was a man of average -- or maybe even a little above average -- intelligence, but he was dazzled as anyone would have been by Holmes.

You want to see a top-notch Watson? Try the Nero Wolfe stories by Rex Stout, also an A 'n' E series from about 1999. Wolfe is the eccentric detective; Archie Goodwin is his legman, the fellow who narrates the stories. Archie is definitely above average in the IQ department, but Wolfe is even smarter (a self-proclaimed genius). They're funny and fast-moving stories.

Ha! Well up here in northern new england the most feared thing to hit is a moose.

Bastards can fuck up a car. And unlike deer, they don't give a shit about wandering in to traffic.

Sedans are especially scary when involved in moose collisions, because a bumper on a sedan is usually low enough to hit the moose in the legs and cause the entire beast to topple on to your car.

For insurance purposes, a deer hitting your car is the same as a tree falling on your car. ferae naturae are treated differently then domestic animals. If your dog wanders in to traffic, that's your fault. If a wild beast wanders in to traffic, it's God's fault.

I've hit a few deer. Usually you can see the idiots in time, slam on your brakes, and just do minor damage. Deer, despite being stupid, are usually smart enough to not wander on to the road when there are cars around. I only really see them on back roads when they were chilling in the road before I got there.

I've hit a turkey once. I had extensive (cosmetic) front end damage and a broken radiator. Those dummies just fly / glide / wander in to traffic out of nowhere. Go figure.

Traditionally, ex-Presidents shut the hell up and sat down. The asswipe who broke that tradition was Jimmy Carter, who whined like a little girl all through the Reagan presidency. He never got over getting so thoroughly schlonged during the 1980 election, which was a three-way race. Clinton, to his credit, shut the hell up and sat down. Or, perhaps more precisely, went back to what he loved best, which is pursing young, busty blondes.

You must have smarter deer where you live than we do here. Here, they specialize in darting across the road just as you approach them. And there's usually more than one.

We have turkeys and groundhogs and raccoons and skunks and possums here too, but they don't seem to be car magnets in nearly the quantity that the deer are.

Huh. Our deer must do a better job at not being idiots then others. . The only time I see them in the road is when they're timing a run across the road between cars -- kind of like squirrels.

Turkeys on the other hand (and moose) just wander out in to the road, completely impervious to the possibility that the loud machine coming at them at 60 mph could kill them.

551 Maritime,
The reporter *grabbed him* and then they fell down. How do you stop that from happening except by trying to get the guy out of your face/immediate personal space, which is exactly what he was attempting to do?
These things happen quickly, how about we heap as much blame and scolding on the guy who instigated it - and may have even intentionally done so for political purposes?

554 There really should be a "body man" that handles stuff like that. When I was young, I worked on a campaign or two and you basically had someone just play interference for that reason so the candidate doesn't look like an asshole when someone gets in their face about something stupid.

Posted by: Maritime at May 25, 2017 11:54 AM (SCkw/)

Now that I would agree with. But it doesn't alter the fact that in this instance, the "reporter", actually a Dem provocateur, barged into the office uninvited and got into the candidate's face. IMHO, shooting him would have been justified. "Officer, I was in fear of my life."
