Before The Shot
Norman Rockwell

That scale caught my eye. My grandfather was a pediatrician and had one in his office. When he retired he gave it to my parents and it was in our house for years. I have it now, and while it was painted several times and kept in a high-humidty environment, it still works well!

I am tempted to take it apart, strip the paint, and restore it to the original finish, whatever that was.

Is that a metaphor for Trump and America?

25 Great pick!

My dad was a doctor, so instead of staying home from school when I was sick, I got to stay in the room next to his office at the medical center - and I had a nurse! Throat cultures were fun, because it was like doing an experiment w/dad - watch him wipe the petri dish, put it in the fridge and then we'd later check to see if something grew. The one downside: getting shots from dad. The ultimate betrayal!

52 This is one of those Rockwell drawings that is only what it is. There's nothing more than a well-depicted scene of a boy about to get his butt stabbed.

I think Rockwell is popular with teh Horde because we invest his pictures with our own nostalgia. Consider that at the time he was drawing it was simply contemporary scenes.

He was progressive (in the good ways) in his day. He painted against racism, for free speach and for the four freedoms (a ghastly FDR redefinition).

Interestingly, he was from Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the setting for Alice's Restaurant and also home to uber-hippie Arlo Guthrie.

Make sure you have a good guard on your clippers, or a setting that doesn't go too close to the skin. Also, be careful around the anal area - it's easy to nick. Also keep your dog well-brushed so as to avoid matting. It's very easy to cut the skin if there are mats.

89 I wonder when Rockwell made that painting-- because I don't ever remember my pediatrician making kids drop trou to get a shot. He always gave kids shots in the upper arm-- and we're talking Eisenhower-era Salk vaccine and tetanus shots, back before disposable needles. I still remember the old glass syringes with needles that had to be removed and then sterilized or replaced; the doc's autoclave was as much a part of his office as the scale and the teddy bear wallpaper in the exam room.

105 Another wonderful painting by Rockwell. Never get tired of them. This could be any GP's office from my childhood in the 1950s. And it shows the difference from then. 114 I once read a book about the differences between beauty and the sublime that used Byzantine art as its case study. Beauty is quantifiable; it follows set rules. In the West, these are the Classical guidelines. The sublime is deeper. It is how the artwork transcends its material boundaries and becomes more. This is very personal to the viewer. Rockwell's art is beautiful, but he also can be sublime. To many here, it is obvious that Rockwell reaches you in a deeply personal way. I'm glad. Enjoy the hell out of it. Get in your comfy chair, with your favorite beverage and soak it in.

Nope. This was way back when I was in high school---and I'm 29, just like Ace.

About 20 years ago the Flowbee (clippers that attached to a vacuum) became popular for home haircuts. A neighbor used it on her kids and they looked like little Russian prisoners because their hair was all one length all over their heads--same length over their ears, nape of neck as on the top of their head. 172 For those interested in Winston Churchill. The Kindle Daily Deals has a bunch of books by or about him. They are offering the 4 volume History of the English Speaking People at 2.99 per volume. And they have the 6 volume (I think it's 6) Martin Gilbert biographies for 2.99 per volume or less. If I needed these books I would snap them up at that price (already have them or the equivalent). I find Churchill the writer to be fascinating.

176 "Is that a metaphor for Trump and America?"

yes

Trump needs to get back to the original framework and put a new skin on America.

That could be an extended metaphor for his rehab work on old buildings that need all new glass and other external surface repairs. That can all be done while the renters stay at work in the building (mostly) as they move through the floors.

To get the permits trump has to grease all the palms of the grifters (GOPe). He needs a few more architects to organize the draining of the swamp part, but he has swamp creatures in his inner circles.

Trump could use his actual success of rehabbing large buildings to build an allegory of rebuilding the nation, keeping its original themes. A well planned allegory would build the vision he needs for himself, and for the citizenry.

"Drain the Swamp" is important to building higher, but he needs the vision of the finished edifice to be more complete than just MAGA. America First as a sovereign state respecting our heritage ... get some visionaries to paint that image for US.

177 Dershowitz Questions Purpose of Special Counsel What Is the Crime?

Host Anderson Cooper and Dershowitzs fellow panelists Jeffrey Toobin and Carl Bernstein argued the investigation should proceed, but Dershowitz insisted there wasnt a criminal statute about what Trump and his campaign have been accused.

Lets assume that thats true show me the criminal statute, he said. I still sit here as a civil libertarian. I dont want us ever to become what Stalinist Russia became when Stalin was told by Lavrentiy Beria, Show me the man and Ill find you the crime. What is the crime?

Cooper said the question wasnt whether or not it was illegal collusion or just collusion but if it occurred, to which Dershowitz said that wasnt something over which Mueller would have jurisdiction.

that is a political issue, but that doesnt give Mueller jurisdiction, he added. Mueller has no jurisdiction to explore whether he made political mistakes, did terrible things, engaged in wrongdoing. Only criminal acts.

Neither. This has been in the works for at least 2 years, but not as a direct replacement for the 'Hog, but as a dedicated COIN attack aircraft. Which incidentally, would likely also extend the life of the A10, because it would lighten the workload, allowing the A10s to focus more on their original mission.

There is a second program (I assume that is what the article is about with 3 planes) for a Light Attack Demonstration Program which would not be an "A-10 replacement."

This would be the third iteration of LAD since 2001, I believe. This LAD-type requirement has been lingering around since at least 1983.

I'd say that makes it old technology that needs to be embraced and expanded upon.

For anything sinus related, headache, cold, flu etc. I always take a big bowl and fill it with boiling water at the kitchen table. Put a bath towel over my head and lean over the bowl breathing in the hot steamy air through my nose and blow out through my mouth to make more steamy air. I adjust gaps in the towel coverage and how far I am from the water to keep the heat as hot as I can stand. Doing this a couple times a day seems to speed up relief especially the congestion which in my case makes my teeth hurt along with the headache. I used to add some Vicks to the water but it works well without it.

251 As tough as it is to have a beloved pet put to sleep, it's worse to watch them suffering.

I remember an old lady in our neighborhood who refused to have her Welsh terrier put to sleep when he was 17 and really sick - could barely walk and his breathing was labored, because "she just couldn't do without him." Well, he ended up dying anyway and went though much more pain and suffering than was necessary.

252 So on the subject of dogs, my little guy has for some reason been terribly anxious when i leave for work in the morning the past month or so. He trembles on the couch when I put my shoes on, and when I get home, the dog towels & things I have hanging on the front door have been pulled down & the doormat has been clawed & chewed - he's destroyed two of them so far, one was heavy rubber. Yesterday he chewed up the tongue on my boots by the door. i've had him for two years now, but this is the first time he's behaved like this. Why would he be so anxious now? What can I do about it?

Unfortunately, Ma Deuce ISN'T an exception. The Army had briefly adopted two different replacements over the last 10 years or so, before cancelling them in favor of buying new M2s.

The big complaint against the two replacements was the cyclic rate, which was about half that of the M2.

Crate him. Take the time to begin giving him a safe "den" to stay in during the day by having him go into it , get a treat, then come out. Start with ten minutes , then increase it in increments. Finally have him sleep in it overnight in your bedroom while you are close by.

Finally, start leaving him in it for an hour or so when you leave(go do errands or whatever), then finally leave him in it.

Many dogs cannot handle having an entire house to "guard". They need the security of having a small comfy den to stay in . Crates are not cruel, they are the opposite, they are , done right and not used for punishment, their safe place. Make sure it's not too big in that he feels he should pee , etc. in it.

301 thanks for the Rockwell. He remains a giant among American painters. The Whitney (yes, the Whitney!) years ago did a wonderful retrospective that had every single one of his Saturday Evening Post covers, plus some of his preliminary sketches and studies and a few of the paintings from which the covers derived (and which, in one case, was a good as a Vermeer or other Northern European masters).
He was a wonderfully compassionate and keen observer of human nature, especially our better angels. His universal appeal and understanding was confirmed by the response of a couple near me. They both wore leather jackets and studs, ripped jeans and whatnot. He had a mohawk; she had a nose ring. And he laughed and pointed to one painting and nudged his girlfriend - "look, they screwed up the message on the telephone! HAHAH."

Love this one because the doctor told the kid to read the diploma on the wall so he wouldn't notice Doc approaching with a big ol' needle.

That's the genius of Rockwell.

319 Someone might have said this already, but:

The original finish on a doctor's scales would be enamel, much like you'd find on a white refrigerator. It was meant to be sanitary. You can clean it with virtually anything: alcohol, bleach, ammonia (not at the same time), etc.

Getting it restored would be cool, indeed, if it was your grandfather's.

377 CBD - I believe that those old scales were enamel (the old-fashioned, porcelain, sprayed-on and baked kind) over cast iron. To restore, it may require a double step procedure to take off any non enamel substances/paints it has been covered with and then "re-enamel" it with porcelain- which is a bit of a specialty procedure - you should fine re-enamel experts near you and find out. Used one once to re-enamel an old claw foot tub - came out glorious.

388 Since I've always been late to the recent DOOM threads by our blog master, instead of commenting too late there, I'll just be ignored here instead.

What JJ said/Rush said, mostly. With some twists.

As appalling and outrageous as it is that a special counsel is appointed now, to "investigate" what is almost certainly nothing (and is, at most, something tiny), while the unprecedented, brazen lawlessness of the last 8 years remains untouched, the bigger problem has nothing to do with the whole fauxtoversy.

The limp, and pathetic, performance of Congress - and the passivity of the WH in the face of that - there is the real peril.

The failure to exploit the political momentum of the country's first rebellion election. The CR expiration, and the Dems' jaw-dropping politically insane threat to "shut down" govt. to prevent action on border security - the congressional GOP's acquiescence to that, and even more so Trump's - to anyone who understands the mechanics/politics of how things work/don't work in the Beltway .... very alarming.

Meanwhile, the necessity (not importance, necessity) of prosecuting the crimes of the last 8 years - above all the breath-taking violations of Clinton at State (Espionage Act, Public Records Act, $$$ corruption, obstruction of justice), and more recently the B-movie jaw-dropper of abuse of the intel apparatus for political purposes - hangs over Trump and Sessions.

Dereliction and laziness and mediocrity over years has brought us to where we are. Not prosecuting the mega-scandals would be a ratchet turn far larger than any single one anyone living has witnessed.

Agreed. I am, perhaps, more aware of plague than many n the US because it is a problem in Colorado (though isolated cases usually, nothing like epidemics) so I notice when it gets mentioned. India and China *still* have plague epidemics that brutalize a region before being gotten under control, but most Americans don't even know plague still exists in the rest of the world. And that's just one example of what is out there.

I doubt that he'd mount a primary challenge against Trump. Primaries against sitting president almost never go anywhere, but celebrity, so who knows?

If he were to go Democratic, it'd be interesting. He's minority, but very masculine. He's very pro-American, and I doubt that he'd toe much of the progressive line.

Would his celebrity drown out everyone else like Trump did in his primary, or was it Trump's particular brand of brashness mixed with his celebrity that did it? I don't know.

I don't see an independent run working out very well.

416 OT, to make everyone feel a bit better about their lives:

I'm in the most bizarre situation at my part time job. I was friends with my male supervisor and his lover who works in my department. The lover and I had a falling out last fall, and I distanced myself from him, but the supervisor and I have continued our friendship.

In a moment of abject stupidity yesterday, I tried to see if the situation could be rectified with the lover. The conversation went very badly, and ended with the lover telling me in a very aggressive manner than I am not allowed to spend any time with the supervisor outside of work. I felt extremely threatened. This is someone who knows where I live, knows my vehicle and, in the kind of work we do, could easily injure me. I've been told to go to HR, but I feel that will have a negative impact on me. I am probably going to tell my friend the supervisor what happened, and explain that I feel his lover is emotionally unstable. Since I know he won't hide the fact that the supervisor spends time with me occasionally (twice in seven months) that I feel that is putting me at personal risk.

Sigh.

See? Life isn't so bad, is it?

431 The national GOP has avoided politics for years. That's their "strategy". Mouth the right platitudes to lazy/uninformed constituents in mostly gerrymandered districts. Avoid almost all serious or partisan agitation directly against the Dems. Do literally nothing once handed power.

Recall that - in two consecutive mid-terms, the first of which was part of the greatest partisan power shift in our history (a true wave) - the Beltway GOP was, literally, dragged cursing and spitting into actually adopting some sort of substantive platform on the actual issues that drove the political angst/anger/panic of their part of the electorate. Those two instances were almost implausibly stark illustrations of what I'm talking about.

The CR "process" is the concrete expression of the GOP's strategy of avoiding politics at all costs. Of course this relieves the Dems, who are not shy about using the most degraded, damaging sort of demagoguery (with their media arm embracing/expanding it), of politics as well.

To illustrate. How many of the vulnerable Dems Senators from Trump states who are up this cycle had to sweat a "shut down" drama centered on the Dems' opposition to the wildly overwhelmingly popular issue of border security?

Oh, right. None. Because the congressional GOP wanted to avoid it, and the WH - incredibly - just mumbled and went along with it.

Trump got where he was through the best sort of politics - articulating yuuge unaddressed problems and promising action. He'd better rediscover politics, and quick.

I was wondering recently if part of the baby boom wasn't just "the returning military" as is commonly same d, but also that the children born from that *survived* in numbers never seen before because of the introduction of vaccines.

The activist left is convinced that Trump has done something impeachable. The leadership of the Democratic Party has egged this on.

When nothing comes of the investigation to impeach the president ("oh, but if you look at this interaction through a prism, you can see Trump and Putin making out!"), will the activist left be more or less willing to volunteer for sitting Democratic politicians?

Could this backfire so badly that the almost inevitable primary campaigns against red state Democratic senators get even more likely? Could those fights become even more bitter? ("You let Trump get away with murder!")

Food for thought.

You really think this stuff can be stopped at the ballot box in these blue cities and states?

These are our enemies. More and more cops are proving to be our enemies. Wake the fuck up already.

464 I like to carefully scrutinize all those medical certificates too. I think my gastroenterologist has a dog obedience certificate just to see if anyone notices (gastros tend to have a very juvenile, Moron-level sense of humor). I count up the number of caeduceus (stick, two wings, two snakes) vs. staff of Asclepius (stick with one snake wound around it, no wings). The latter is the actual symbol of medicine, since ol' Asclepius said he could cure snakebite. The caeduceus is the symbol of Mercury, and as I cheerfully point out, the god of liars and thieves.

I am then diagnosed as being a niggling pedant.

Interesting thought! There was also great change in sanitation, food supply, general health care especially of infants. But vaccines especially.

And penicillin. Mom's older brother, when they were teens, dove into a pond and got a stick through the eye. Died a few days later of untreatable infection. That would be around 1932.

474 "There needs to be something like welfare reform from the 90's where this is a temporary assistance."

What's now able to be clearly seen in retrospect is that the 1990s Clintonian "welfare reform" was a Potemkin village.

Welfare rolls briefly went down. But at the same time, there was an explosion in applications for long-term disability benefit. And the vast majority of those applications were approved, because the Clinton admin had changed the guidelines used by the administrative-law judges who hear those cases.

Then a few years later on, the welfare rolls exploded again. Without any of the flood of people who'd gone on disability coming back off of disability. The public fisc is shouldering more social-relief expenditure than ever before, despite the purported "reforms".

So we got that going for us, which is nice.

Have you seen the documentary "Weiner"? It's fascinating in a makes you skin crawl way.

It's about his run for mayor. He's already been run out of Congress for a sexting scandal, but the NY libs still love him. I think there's an intervening sext scandal, but he's made all of the promises that he's put that behavior behind him.

Huma, poor Huma, stands by her man. Weiner allows the documentary filmmakers to pretty much embed in the campaign and home life. He's making up ground in the polls, he has a legit shot of being Mayor of NYC.

Then he does it again and gets caught again. His hard core volunteers are shattered. Huma has a look of utter devastation.

Even the filmmakers ask him, "if you knew this was going on why did you let us film it?"

Fuck, it's Friday, take a break from drama queening every now and then.

He'll hang to life like a leech as long as his weiner works.

528 I don't think the celebrity President thing is healthy, if I had my way, Trump would be the last one.

I know the Reagan example comes up, but the guy had been a 2 term Governor first. And Trump had extensive business experience before branding a TV show.

Going directly from actor to President is messed up.

529 The interview I saw with the Rock had him saying maybe to running for something. Said absolutely nothing about running for President.

Fake news unless someone heard him say he was thinking of running for President.

Congress? Sure, go for it.

The Rock as a legislator?

That'd be interesting...

531 We don't live in your house, Banana Splits Guy, so I guess if it burns down you'd better not come whining and drama queening to us about it.

And by the way, fuck you.

Why should they ? You never take a break from trying to ridicule if not dismiss any opinion regarding the possibility of corrupt law enforcement ... at the Federal or State level.

What's your connection ? Nobody White Knights this hard without a connection.

533 My view is anyone Constitutionally permitted to be a Congresscritter should knock themselves out and run, if that's what they want.

534 And the Rock picks up Lindsey Graham by his undies, atomic wedgies him and throws him out the Capitol Doorway where he rolls down the steps, bloodied like a second tier prizefighter after 12 rounds.

Might be worth it.

Deny it all you want ... I'm not the first to connect the dots. Anytime someone theorizes on any kind of FBI or other such cover up ... you are always "all in" on squashing that shit. Same with any serious questioning about the loyalties of those types of agencies.

I just wondered where your motivation came from. You are most definitely motivated ... more than a typical "The System Is Working" Law and Order Republican.

Posted by: ScoggDog at May 19, 2017 12:29 PM (yOf1t)

546 I am tempted to take it apart, strip the paint, and restore it to the original finish, whatever that was.

Is that a metaphor for Trump and America?

No. It is a scale.

547 I've got a scale just like that that at the museum, it too still works. when I do school tours kids are always wanting to weigh themselves.

Posted by: Farmer at May 19, 2017 02:12 PM (o/90i)

548 My pediatrician had his office in his house and he had a scale just like this one. When I was 5 I split open my chin and Mom raced me to his house. He came out in a white coat over his pajamas. He gave me 4 stitches with no local anesthesia (Mom had to hold me down). His waiting room had those view finders where you looked at scenic cards and they looked like they were in 3D.

Re Weiner...who said his conduct was "... morally wrong as it was unlawful." Strange turn of phrase. How does this logic apply to, say, abortion?

Re a Really Super Nice Gay Supervisor with a Nut Job Lover: I'm guessing he's into bondage. Also, if he is blind to what's happening to his employees he's probably not such a super good supervisor. Walk away...it's not worth the trouble. There are a lot of dicks in the world who thrive on finding and pressing emotional buttons, and it's best to ignore them.Unless you're like me and get right back in their face and point out how weak and insecure they are....

Phew! this lurker had to blow off a little end-of-week steam.
