Wednesday Overnight Open Thread (5/17/17) Just Another ONT Edition

(The ONT is. Are you?)

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Misogyny played no significant role whatever in Hillary Clinton’s two defeats as a presidential candidate. This claim is such a crock! What a gross exploitation of feminism—in the service of an unaccomplished woman whose entire career was spent attached to her husband’s coat tails. Hillary was handed job after job but produced no tangible results in any of them—except of course for her destabilization of North Africa during her rocky tenure as secretary of state.Camille Paglia

Quote II

If you can somehow force a liberal into a point-counterpoint argument, his retorts will bear no relation to what you’ve said - unless you were in fact talking about your looks, your age, your weight, your personal obsessions, or whether you are a fascist. In the famous liberal two-step, they leap from one idiotic point to the next, so you can never nail them. It’s like arguing with someone with Attention Deficit Disorder. Ann Coulter

Quote III

The younger generation is supposed to rage against the machine, not for it. They're supposed to question authority, not question those who question authority. Bill Maher

*****

Seth Rich. It's funny how this guy's name doesn't make the MSM. Former DNC staffer was regularly contacting WikiLeaks before his death.

The Democratic National Committee staffer shot and killed in Washington, D.C., last summer leaked more than 44,000 emails to WikiLeaks before his death, according to a report.

The Fox News report implies that Seth Rich may have been the one who leaked information about the DNC to WikiLeaks that showed, among other things, that the DNC favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the presidential primary. While it's not clear, the report does note that WikiLeaks posted that information just 12 days after Rich was killed.

Diabetes, a dastardly disease. The march to cure Diabetes moves forward. A bio-engineered pancreas has been developed.

Even the most exciting breakthrough medical treatment can be rendered obsolete by a particularly insurmountable obstacle: time. If a treatment only works temporarily, it has little chance of making a significant difference in the lives of patients, which is why the latest news from the University of Miami’s Diabetes Research Institute is so exciting.

A year after transplanting insulin-producing islet cells into the omentum of a woman with a particularly unwieldy form of type 1 diabetes, the cells continue to operate as hoped. She no longer needs to receive insulin via injections or an insulin pump and is in good health.

The set of Morning Joe, I bet dairy barns are cleaner and more moral. Kellyanne Conway fires back at the MSNBC slime anchors.

The notion that I am serving for ‘the money’ or a ‘paycheck’ is absurd. As a campaign manager, I made a fraction of what other consultants have made on unsuccessful presidential campaigns. Then I walked away from dozens of opportunities for millions of dollars, and instead walked into the White House. I would do it again.

It is a privilege to assist President Trump in the White House, just as it was during the campaign. I know him, I respect him, I believe in him, and I am confident in his capacity to be a transformative and successful President.”

Money grows on trees and Gender Inclusive locker rooms are a necessity.

After students agreed to shell out $308 each for wellness initiatives every academic year, outgoing student government President Will Morrow began drafting and advocating for the gender-neutral locker room proposal.

Given Berkeley’s total undergraduate enrollment of 27,496, students at the elite institution are paying a collective $4,234,384 per semester ($8,468,768 per year) on the Wellness Initiative Fee alone—enough to cover the average cost of tuition for 249 students or pay off the average student-loan debt of 396 graduates.

It will be interesting when 50% of the people can't be made to care.

1975, Elton John was awarded a Platinum Record for sales of a million copies of the LP 'Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy', the first album ever to be certified Platinum on the day of its release. via thisdayinmusic.com

May 17, 2012, Donna Summer, the 1970s pop singer known as the Queen of Disco, died of lung cancer, an illness she believed she contracted from inhaling toxic particles released after the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York. She won five Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, and had three multi-platinum albums, including the hits 'Hot Stuff', 'Love to Love You, and 'Baby' and 'I Feel Love'. via thisdayinmusic.com

Global warming should make the world brown, right? A funny thing happened. The earth is becoming greener.

We show a persistent and widespread increase of growing season integrated LAI (greening) over 25% to 50% of the global vegetated area, whereas less than 4% of the globe shows decreasing LAI (browning). Factorial simulations with multiple global ecosystem models show that CO2 fertilization effects explain 70% of the observed greening trend…

Don't let the Left tell you Comey's firing is Watergateesque. Take it from Patrick J. Buchanan, who was there.

History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce, said Marx.

On publication day of my memoir of Richard Nixon’s White House, President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Instantly, the media cried “Nixonian,” comparing it to the 1973 Saturday Night Massacre.

Yet, the differences are stark.

Lawyers and politicians, God's curse on mankind. If something isn't permitted, it is prohibited.

“Municipal Attorney Daniel Blasdell said the garden issue came about as a result of the chicken issue.
He explained that people were asking why chickens couldn’t be allowed in the community while gardens were.
The city had no laws pertaining to residential gardens, which means they were technically not allowed.

According to the city’s laws, if something is not permitted it is prohibited.
‘Right now, if there is not something expressly in this code that says that you can have one, you technically can’t,’ Blakeman confirmed.”

We have a new Burger champ.

Five Guys has triumphed over In-N-Out in a battle of the burger brands.

The chain received the top spot in the burger category in The Harris Poll's annual EquiTrend Study. This is the first time Five Guys has been crowned the burger champion in the study, which asks respondents to rate brands based on familiarity, quality, and how likely they are to consider purchasing its items.

Hillary would be childless, unmarried, living in a studio apartment with 6 or 7 cats, and she'd tip the scales at around 210 pounds.

91 I love the story about CO2 making the planet greener. I have a couple of planted fish tanks - in order to really grow plants under water you have to inject CO2 into the tank, and then the plants just explode and turn beautiful shades of rich green. At the end of each day, the tanks are filled with streams of O2 bubbles that the plants have made rising to the top as the plants thrive.

So brace yourselves for stories of the O2 horrors we've inflicted on this poor planet.

158 There is a difference between the Jones' livestock running around in the back yard and the Smith's tomato plants. What would our Founding Fathers say?

++++

Personally, I have no desire to live next to a chicken coop. I don't want to
listen to roosters crowing at sunrise and I don't want to smell
chickenshit all day long. I could care less about gardening, unless they are using lots of very smelly fertilizer.

But, I don't think there is a difference under the law. That is, the city went after people for raising chickens, even though there was no law prohibiting it. The city's position was that there was no law permitting the keeping of chickens, so it was prohibited. The chicken people then pointed out there was no law allowing gardens either, but lots of people have gardens.

If there is no law about either, then they are the same - under the law. The city looks to solve their dilemma by passing an ordinance allowing gardens. Of course, the answer is if the city thinks that raising chickens should be prohibited, then they ought to pass a law that says so instead of taking the totalitarian position that everything not specifically permitted is prohibited.

Tar and (chicken) feathers is what's called for.

196 RE: Mueller

Email from Hillary to Syd Blumenthal:

The FBI director hardly need to be informed that the FBI had conducted an investigation that was already over and exonerated Petraeus. The reason Cantor was informed was that the FBI agent was outraged that Petraeus was exonerated or being exonerated. Cantor informed Mueller to put him on notice and pressure him--creating the series of events that in fact occurred--informing Clapper and forcing Petraeus out. What began as an investigation into Broadwell's emails escalated and was transformed into an October Surprise that failed. But the timing did not work out to turn the election.

In other words, Mueller was pressured to take out Patraeus.

Then I went in the same restaurant with my son a few months ago for dinner, and ordered the same burger.

Meh. So burger places, regardless of the price, are always kinda iffy.
If they literally just grilled the hamburger, it's usually pretty good. If it's been cooked under the heat lamp for a while, it will be dried out and kinda yucky.

When I was a kid and walked home from school for lunch, my Mom would fix me lunch, and sometimes it was a hamburger. My Mom kinda scorched everything, but I did like her hamburgers when they were just a little overdone on the outside. Crunchy, with a hint of charcoal.

well, I cannot match the fast food speed, being a one man shop and all, but I can recreate the product. You are right though. The high-end steakhouse burger is actually a lot easier to create than the Whopper of Baconator, they have a lot more going on with the condiments and vegetables.

Holy crap. My mom used to make something similar but only because we were poor and she was figuring out ways to make stuff a little different and/or taste a bit better.

She'd mix the onion soup powder in the ground beef, cook the burger on the griddle, and then put a slice of Kraft on, add a couple of ice cubes, and cover it with a bowl. Now that I think about it she must've put it on the bun somewhere, too, because the buns would be steamed, and the cheese would be melted, browned, and bonded to the bun.

I'd forgotten about those. Looks like I know what I'm cooking this weekend.

253 oh by the way, I have been working on my chili recipe and am reasonably happy with where things are. Now I have a question does it matter what order you combine the ingredients in? I have been trying to get something of a heat crescendo going in the chili so that when you first put the chili in you mouth you are able to taste the fine palate of ingredients I hav assembled, even appreciate their individual contributions, before the heat comes through like some cocktail of napalm and white phosphorous and lays waste to the inside of your mouth. Hopefully the flavors you tasted before the pepprgeddon arrived was sufficiently pleasant to entice you to take a second bite and so on and so on and then you tell two friends and they tell two friends and so and so on.

so anyway, it seems that the earlier I add the peppers in the process, the later their flavor hits the tongue. Is that true? I was wondering if adding the peppers right after I have browned the beef enables them to combine with the beef in a way that delays their appearance in the tasting process?

anyone?

I am so very sorry. Depression and panic attacks are horrible things. If you're not seeing a psychiatrist, please do--they can treat you in ways that primary care physicians can't.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is absolutely necessary to help with panic attacks. There are several great books but it helps to see a good therapist trained in CBT as well.

I need a better system of managing a prayer list for the Horde. Keeping it in my head just isn't cutting it.

I don't know if there is anything like Authentic Chinese food. Even in China, there is a huge variation depending on where you are. In the south and southeast, everything is served with rice.
In the north and especially the northwest of China, it's wheat country, and everything is served with noodles. Some Chinese food is incredibly good, some is incredibly disgusting or divergent from Western tastes.

The "non genuine" parts of Chinese food in America is that there is usually a lot more meat protein of all kinds in American "Chinese food"; more chicken, more pork, more fish and shrimp. And especially beef, which you rarely seen in China, outside of restaurants that cater to Westerners. While there is a lot of good Chinese food in China, there is usually a lot less meat in a meal. Usually a lot of fresh vegetables (good), peanuts of various types, some meat (sometimes....a mystery!). But usually chicken or pork, unless you are near the ocean, and sometimes get fish or shellfish.

361 Shoot 4 pigeons with pellet gun. Dress them and remove the breast meat. Marinate the breasts in red wine, thyme, and lemon juice overnight in the frig. Fire up the grill and cook them for 10 minutes over high heat, turning the meat every 2-3minutes. Serve with a green salad of spinach and arugula (from your garden) dressed with a mix of sharp mustard, mayo, and finely chopped shallots. Serves 2.

A country boy can survive. Plus pigeons shit on the hay in the loft and have to be killed. Eat what you kill or refrain from eating. City people will not survive unless they learn better. Yeah, I know I am just a knuckle dragging old bitter clinger.

For frozen dinner for two they're not bad price wise. Our favorite, Shanghai Beef, can't be found anywhere around here any more. I always add about a half cup or so of extra water to them when making so the sauce is thinner and pour them over rice from the rice cooker. Quick easy and not too costly meal for my wife and I.

366 Best Chinese food I've ever had, was the "15th St. Wok", in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Not one single "Americanized" dish on the menu. No Egg Fu Yung, no Chop Suey, no Beef & Broccoli, etc.

My waitress was so fresh-off-the-plane, she needed an interpreter to do her job. (she was a smokin' hot cutie, it was worth the trouble just to have her smiling in my direction!)

The ambience of the place was certainly above business casual, too. Coat and tie isn't "required", but a guy would feel a bit out of place, without.

I had the Shrimp Four Way. Presentation would easily put a cruise ship's display to shame. And it was absolutely delicious.

They get deliveries of stuff flown in from Taiwan, daily, or nearly so.

Don't know if they're still around, but the times I was in Tulsa, I'd make damn sure not to miss 'em.

Don't live in a city. Its a none issue for me. We eat pigeons that nest in the hay barn, including the young ones. Its food, waste not want not. People have always misjudged him (and Fox). Fox Classic (as opposed to recent changes) was always sensationalist/marketing first, and getting extra eyes by covering *more subjects* than what the MFM did second.

Drudge is kind of the same way. Get more eyeballs by covering a wider spectrum - it's not that he's per-se partisan (though I think he is to an extent)... it's just that when MFM boycotts something and someone else covers it, everyone assumes that someone else is "conservative."

Yes he is. And let me tell you what's happening. It's clear to me that the GOPe has already assured the Dems that Trump's impeachment is a done deal. And they've already made deals on what legislation will or won't get passed after Trump is gone.

They've leaked it to some friendly conservative news sites so they'll get "right with God" before the shit goes down. Everything that happens until then is well-scripted theater.

Six Fucking Dollars for a burger? Without fries? Add an extra $4 for fries? Okay, I'll pass on the fires, gimme a burger.

543 found this on the intarwebs:

Remember, they didn't just kill Seth Rich, but also Shawn Lucas, and Joe Montano. The link is the rigging of the convention and what that could mean for the survival of the DNC.
Seth Rich (died July 10th, 2016) leaked the Hillary emails to Wikileaks, which contained evidence which could be used to prove fraud at the convention.
Joe Montano (died July 25th, 2016) was the DNC chairman just before Wasserman Schultz took over. He could have been called as a witness.
Shawn Lucas (died Aug 2nd, 2016) spearheaded a class action lawsuit against the Wasserman Schultz rigging the DNC primary, stemming from Guccifer 2.0 leaked emails (prior to Wikileaks).

The motive to kill Seth was his knowledge of duplicate primary polling places used to manipulate the results.

612 Talking Tom Cat was an instant hit, launching a franchise whose titles have reached No. 1 in more than 100 countries on the App Store. Today, almost 350 million monthly active users support the apps, and Tom's YouTube channel has more than 2 billion views. Unlike many mobile app creators, the Logins have proved adept at turning popularity into profit. Playing Talking Tom triggers an onslaught of advertising and in-game purchase offers, and Outfit7 earns more than $100 million a year. In early 2016 the Logins decided to cash out, hiring Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to find the most lucrative deal.

he has real institutional forces directed against him, that is the main problem and it's hard to discern what's what through the static.

all of it - what's caused by him and what's from his enemies - makes enacting his agenda that much more difficult. if he was a smooth political operator maybe it would be easier. dunno.

otherwise, ima drive to In-n-Out or Tommy's. you can keep that nasty ass East Coast crap where it belongs, back east. even McDonalds, Carl's Junior or Booger King is better.

652 I'm not particularly picky but I do like In-N-Out burgers. Only had 5 Guys once; good enough, but not for the price. Best burgers are homemade, on homemade buns.

When I went to school in Chicago there were two competing burger/hot dog joints: Mr. G's and J's Dawg 'n Burger. Lines out the door, faded travel posters of Greece on the walls, the guy at the register haranguing the customers for their orders and then yelling the orders to the cooks. "Whaddaya want? Move down the line!" I'm pretty sure these places were the inspiration for SNL's "Pepsi! Pepsi! Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger!" skit. Not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination but for a college kid it was manna from heaven. Students got a special deal: Burger, fries, and a shake for $1.75...

a good example is while he's been embroiled (seemingly) in twitter storms with the press, his sec'y of education de vos has been attacked and insulted with hardly a response. maybe he twitted "sad" or something. he should make a major address denouncing her attackers and in addition to defending her, outline his education goals and policies. that is an area he could have broad support.

Actual reason? The Dem party would have lost all its membership.

713 Regarding Chinese food ...

First a disclaimer: I've been to China 5 times (3 to the north, one to the west, and once to the SE), and this is what I've been told by people who live there and visit the USA.

What you get in the majority of US Chinese restaurants is an Americanized version of southern Chinese fare. Lots of rice, sticky sweet sauces, and as someone else said, "lots of meat/seafood". I really never cared for that, but when in China's SE areas, the food isn't like that at all. It's quite good, especially the dumplings.

In the north and west (wheat country), it's noodles. Not much meat at all, mostly veggies. First saute onions and peppers in oil, add a few other things, then the noodles and stir-fry. Excellent.

WARNING: The Chinese have this thing about dried, then reconstituted mushrooms. Nasty. Worst thing you'll ever try and eat. That's all over the country.

Final note: the best dumplings I've had were in Shanghai. Paid one price per person, and they brought one per person out, each of a different kind with dipping sauce, until you begged for mercy.

720 I've had Five Guys. It was okay, but not worth going back for. Never had In and Out. Culver's makes a pretty a pretty tasty burger, especially this one seasonal kind called the Peppergrinder burger. That one is fabulous, and they should have it on the menu all the time. they are all getting expensive. Look at beef prices at your local market, 8 dollars for a small steak, and not even top grade. I have a 5 guys within walking distance, but the be burger is still at the local bar, at about the same price.
