Is It Friday Yet? ONT

Welcome to the Oh-God-isn't-this-week-over-yet-please-just-get-me-to-Friday ONT.

Cute

Why don't we start with something cute? What could be cuter than a toddler playing catch with a dolphin?

Almost makes you forget that dolphins are vicious aquatic rape machines.

History in Context

Down in New Orleans, left wing authoritarian people are doing what left wing and authoritarian ( ISIS, Communists, etc...) people always do: Attempting to sanitize history to fit their narrative. If you can eliminate historical context for your actions, or eliminate historical knowledge from those you wish to manipulate (example: A recent poll of college students revealed that just over 25% of them believe that the United States is the ONLY nation in history where people kept slaves. They're not uneducated, they are intentionally MIS-educated), then you can more easily enslave the population. In this case, they are removing Confederate monuments. Condoleezza Rice was asked her opinion. She stated:

I’m a firm believer keep your history before you. So I don’t actually want to rename things that were named for slave owners. I want us to look at the names and recognize what they did and be able to tell our kids what they did and for them to have a sense of their own history. When you start wiping out history, sanitizing history to make you feel better, it’s a bad thing. But let me say one thing about our constitution, that constitution originally counted my ancestors as 3/5 of a man. In 1952 my father had trouble registering to vote in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2005, I stood in the Ben Franklin room, one of our founders, I took an oath of office to the same constitution, and it was administered by Jewish woman Supreme Court justice. That is the story of America. The long road to freedom has indeed been long. It has sometimes been violent. It had many martyrs but ultimately has been Americans claiming those institutions for themselves and expanding the definition of ‘We the People.’

Amen Condoleezza, amen.

Health Insurance Update

Some relevant links:

The Pre-Existing Lie . What does the AHCA say about pre-existing conditions? Not what the dems are saying. Here's a tutorial.

Obamacare's Pre-existing Failure. Context for PreX

And over at The Market Ticker, Karl Denninger goes through the trouble to basically write The Bill To Permanently Fix Health Care For All. Karl's a smart guy, and he's not wrong, but he goes way too far in the middle with the part about how to treat people with self-inflicted chronic diseases (like diabetes). That's very much a “perfect world” solution, any bill that included such provisions would be dead on arrival. The FIRST part, where he outlines how to fix the pricing problem in health services, is dead spot on, and SHOULD be the starting point for any attempt to fix the health insurance/care problem. Sadly, nobody in DC even mentions it.

Dognado Update

A few weeks back we featured footage of the dangerous Dognado™. Scientists have been hard at work on the problem, and have released footage of the phenomenon (do-doo-do-du-doo!) in its formative stages. Hopefully this means we're one step closer to being able to predict and mitigate these terrifying tempests.

Nugs Update

Remember the guy seeking a year's worth of nuggets from Wendy's? Well, he didn't get 18 million retweets, but his tweet did become the most retweeted tweet of all time, and Wendy's decided that was good enough:

Wendy's is killing it on social media. They turned a simple, stupid tweet into a marketing jackpot.

Musical Interlude

How about a clown singing Pinball Wizard to the tune of Folsom Prison Blues?

The clown is Puddles Pity Party, and he has a phenomenal singing voice. This was playing in the background as I started to write the ONT, and I would have sworn it was Johnny singing.

Flying the Friendly Skies

Let's pay tribute to the airline that did everything in its power to help a mother in need

The news lately has been full of stories of bad conduct by airlines, it's nice to read about the opposite.

...the plane suddenly turned around on the tarmac at Midway Airport and taxied back toward the gate.

Once the plane was anchored at the gate, a flight attendant approached Peggy and asked her to get off. Peggy thought she had boarded the wrong plane, but when she got back inside the terminal, a gate agent told her to call her husband. He had been forced to contact Southwest Airlines because Peggy's phone was turned off. But luckily, the airline managed to get the two spouses in contact with each other at the last moment.
It turned out that Peggy's 24-year-old son had suffered a serious head injury and was in a coma in Denver, Colorado.
Peggy had barely taken in the shocking news before a staffer explained that the airline had reticketed her on the next direct flight to Denver and arranged all of the other practical details.

Well done, Southwest, well done.

Tonight's Debate

Longbows vs Crossbows. Star Trek vs Star Wars. Toilet paper over or under. The history of mankind is filled with examples of great debates, with learned men holding forth and waxing eloquently on both sides of pivotal issues. Sometimes it comes to blows. Sometimes it comes to blood. No matter what the immediate result, both sides know that the debate will remain, simmering, just waiting for someone to rekindle it for the next round. So, without further ado, I ask you Morons:

DOES KETCHUP BELONG ON A HOT DOG?

When it comes to food questions, my answer is always the same: It's my food, I'll eat it the way that I like it. If you like yours a different way, fine, knock yourself out, but I'm eating mine the way I like it. I'll let Dirty Harry have the opening argument here.

250 years ago, John Harrison claimed he could design a clock that was accurate to within a second over a 100 day period. He was widely ridiculed. Well, they recently built that clock from his plans, and what happened next will amaze you. You've got 5/8 of a second to figure out what it was.

Not a liberal in a thousand knows that Southerners wanted slaves counted 1:1, but Northerners didn't want them to count at all, so 3/5 was the compromise.

No, it absolutely is not. It is, in fact, dead bang accurate, unlike most of the time people bring it up. Each slave was counted as 3/5 of a man for the purpose of proportional representation in the House of Representatives. She was, as usual, extremely precise in her choice of words

I was about to rant on this but she does specify "my ancestors" and she would know better than I if her ancestors were slaves.

I am incredibly annoyed at the pig-ignorant that claim ALL blacks were counted as 3/5 of a person. That was only true for slaves. Yes, the majority of blacks in the US at the time were slaves, but free blacks (and there were free blacks, even in the south) were to be counted as a full person in the census.

I know, I know, preaching to the choir.

I think you missed the point. It's absolutely true, but we're invited to conclude that that was because the South wanted that, and therefore by inference considered slaves as worth less than white men. It was the North, which didn't want slaves to count AT ALL, a minor detail now lost in leftist propaganda.

++++

No. Slaves were not represented in the House. Their masters got to count the slaves to increase their own weight in the House vs non-slave states. But, for the slaves, who of course could not vote, they had zero, none, nada, nothing, in the way of representation.

Of course, under the northern states scheme, they still would have had zero representation. But, the salve masters would have not been able to increase the weight of their own numbers.

74 24 Most of what she said is true enough, but that 3/5 thing is ignorant bs. I'm surprised to see her repeating it.

No, it absolutely is not. It is, in fact, dead bang accurate, unlike most of the time people bring it up. Each slave was counted as 3/5 of a man for the purpose of proportional representation in the House of Representatives. She was, as usual, extremely precise in her choice of words

conclude that that was because the South wanted that, and therefore by
inference considered slaves as worth less than white men. It was the North, which didn't want slaves to count AT ALL, a minor detail now lost in leftist propaganda.

The problem is that they're conservative, but also black. Sometimes one is the ascendant, sometimes the other. And there's so much agitprop that involves blacks (e.g., "most of the grunts killed in Viet Nam were black") that it's almost inevitable that even well-meaning blacks will unwittingly regurgitate some of it.

Again. I am aware of the history. Rice's point was that that her ancestors only counted partially. But, that ignores the reality. Her ancestors had zero representation. Not 3/5ths!!!!!

Complaining that the slavers only got to count 3/5ths of their slaves instead of the whole slave shows an ignorance of the mechanics of the whole thing.

However, Wierddave is wrong in saying that Rice was dead accurate. He's affording her a benefit of the doubt that is unwarranted: "It should have been 0/5ths" is not something that naturally flows from a blanket statement of being treated as 3/5ths of a man. Rice clearly intended that it was wrong that the Constitution did not say they were a full man, which is historically illiterate.

Even if she wanted to say the Constitution should have fully recognized their humanity and given citizenship to every slave with all the protections it affords (thus abolishing slavery), that's nice and all, but still historically illiterate as the slave states wouldn't have signed on and slavery in North America would have easily persisted into the 20th Century.

Nit to pick. Your statement doesn't take into account the industrial revolution, which turned farming into agribusiness. Hell you can be a Vegan gym rat and still get T2D.

As a middle aged Type 1 Diabetic since I was a child, I am confident that my mother's steady menu of straight from the pasture/pen/coop/field meat and vegetables certainly DID NOT inflict diabetes upon me.

No doubt it was those rare times that I could count on two hands where I got a small popcorn and soda at the movies that damned me to be one of those damable self inflicted know nothing hoi polloi types.

Sorry, but we've missed the point again. House Congressional representation is/was decided by population. More population, more votes in the House, more clout in the Federal government. Whether those so counted voted or not was secondary.

In contemporary politics, consider California. They want the population as large as possible, thereby to have as much clout as possible in the House. They don't fundamentally care how the population votes; as long as the majority of it votes Democrat, they'll retain that clout.

314 For the census, the slaves were counted 3 for 5. None of them got to vote. So they were really 0 for 5. Eventually the wops and the mick and the krauts and everyone else immigrating into the North overran the South's control of Congress.

315 16 Wanting slaves to count as full persons was the pro slavery position, correct?

Posted by: Caligirl

Counting them as full persons would have caused the South to have more members in the House (and thus more power), due to apportioning representatives by population count.

Part of Cali's huge apportionment of House seats is due to the Census count of illegals (also Electoral College votes, for that matter).

I would love to see representation be linked to a count of citizens only. Oh yeah, the whining of the Dems over that move would last for decades, and my schadenboner would grow so big that it would have its own Schwarzchild radius.

Ignorant. Yes, sounds like something I said!

The North didn't want to count the (non-voting) slaves at all. The South agreed to a 3/5ths count because they believed it would be sufficient to protect slavery.

However, the North's goal was most assuredly not primarily about ending slavery. The Northern states wanted to protect their own power for all kinds of reasons. They didn't want the South to have the extra Reps, just as any state today would object to other states getting a leg up in the Rep count compared to themselves.

Both sides were racist by today's standards, no one was voting for the interests of the slaves.

***
I don't think that is accurate.

Presuming that we see something like a status quo of the 1850s continuing forward in the US:

Most of the country does NOT have access to slave labor.

Restrictions on importation of new slaves means slaves aren't cheap. In 1850 a field hand slave cost about $1200, and a freeman cost about 75 cents/day. Considering the costs to feed and clothe a slave, free labor is more expensive, but not in the short term, and not by a dramatic amount.

Slaves also occasionally escape or die young...

395 244 "Slavery would have been less economical, and most would've been cut loose without the bloodshed and acrimony. "

You cannot reduce slavery down to economics. Slavery was already an economic loser at the time Alexis de Tocqueville made his way along the Ohio river. The problem was the Haitian Revolution which made the South terrified of their own slaves. Ever since they saw themselves much in the same position as ancient Sparta. Southerners didn't say "Well, it worked for Mexico" or any of the dozen other countries since; they were still obsessed with what happened in Haiti at the turn of the century. You see their fears still alive and well as late as 1915 with D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, so even abolition wasn't enough.

398 Slaves vs $15/hr gives me a Brother-In-Law chuckle. BIL was holding forth about how hard it is to hire a contractor or "tradesman" all of a sudden. I said WTH sudden, it's been like that for years--union guys with "sub pay" don't do side jobs if they're laid off, and a lot of non-union outfits, if not exactly fly by night, just shut down when things get slack.

O no, he goes. We can't find anyone to do jobs now because, get this...all the illegal Mexicans are gone! They've been scared away! By me and PDT!

So I goes, I go, the only Mexican I've ever seen on your property was the stone mason, he's more American than I am ferchrissakes, and retired from the GM foundry. And did you know that machines pick the tomatoes, now?

Big time operator, there. Bitching about "his" illegals. His real problem? His cousin's kids grew up, and now he has to mow his own lawn.

Had that at one time, at least I think so. After I lost my first job in Texas I was all fired up about doing something about it. I was trading, and started a blog. Eventually had to stop the trading, the blog I could still do if I wasn't for various excuses.

For some reason the WTF seems to have gone away. The effort with the doc was to try and find out if it was something physical, or perhaps mental.

Seems like with the double doses of testosterone I was taking I should have been bouncing off the walls. Hasn't been the case at all. Didn't really notice any change.

Who knows (shrugs).

406 Restrictions on importation of new slaves means slaves aren't cheap. In 1850 a field hand slave cost about $1200, and a freeman cost about 75 cents/day. Considering the costs to feed and clothe a slave, free labor is more expensive, but not in the short term, and not by a dramatic amount.

Don't forget to factor in the slaves can make new little slaves that are FREE. and the rape...

447 Tennessee Enacts Nation's 'Most Comprehensive' Campus Free Speech Law
The Tennessee law will expressly prohibit the use of so-called "free speech zones" to limit the areas of campus on which certain viewpoints can be heard. University administrators are prohibited from rescinding the invitations from students or faculty of speakers with whom they disagree or fear will cause disruption.

The law also demands campuses use the actual legal definition of student-on-student "harassment" handed down by the Supreme Court, behavior "so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive, and that so undermines and detracts from the victims' educational experience, that the victim-students are effectively denied equal access to an institution's resources and opportunities."

Finally, the Campus Free Speech Protection Act will forbid viewpoint-based discrimination in the distribution of funds for student groups and prevent faculty from being punished for what they choose to say in the classroom unless it is "not reasonably germane to the subject matter of the class as broadly construed, and comprises a substantial portion of classroom instruction."

480 "I think we can quibble about the degree to which the Northern interests adhered to the rapidly ascending abolitionist movement. And because we are Morons, we will."

Abolitionists -- i.e. those who insisted upon immediate and unconditional emancipation of all slaves -- were not all that popular in the North. Most residents of free states in the 1850s just wanted the issue to go away and saw abolitionists as dangerous extremists and "agitators". Even in Northern states, the most outspoken abolitionists frequently encountered hecklers, angry mobs and death threats (sound familiar)? Gradual and/or compensated emancipation ("buying out" slaves from their owners), sometimes combined with a back-to-Africa recolonization scheme, were much more widely accepted ideas than all-out abolition.

Abe Lincoln himself, while campaigning for president, went out of his way to emphasize that he was NOT an abolitionist; rather, he was a "free soiler" who opposed any expansion of slavery but was willing to let it continue in existing slave states if that would preserve the Union.

508 I don't always put ketchup on a hot dog. In fact, if I have access to onions and relish, I never do. But if all I have is packeted condiments (mayo, mustard, ketchup), I need a little something sweet to offset the mustard, so I'll go with ketchup. And when I do, no fucks are given.

Now, there is this Chicago hot dog chain that's in quite a few airports, and they make a big deal about NOT ALLOWING their customers to use ketchup. They even sell fries, but will give you endless shit about how you CANNOT put the ketchup on the dog, ONLY on the fries.

I WILL consume those dogs WITH KETCHUP, even though I've no need for it, simply because some pimple-faced minimum wage jockey TOLD me what I CANNOT do with MY OWN FOOD after I have paid for it. Even if I have to steal ketchup from another restaurant in the food court. And yes, I MAKE SURE they see me. Because fuck them, that's why.

This twisting of history into a useful lie and then making the lie something that "everybody know is true," conventional wisdom which then gets repeated and used as truth by all sides drives me to distraction.

Here is a good piece by Michael Ledeen would be better if he hadn't started it out with a conventional wisdom lie which the left made up and pasted into "history" as "truth."

Check your e-mail! Cleaned some goop from rear face of breech, lubed bolt, and it fires, but not reliably. Does appear to be a headspace issue. Guy who solf me the bolt warned there might be. Looks like I will have to add a spot of weld to the rear of the bolt handle, where it rides on the ramp of the receiver, and then file it until the right headspace is achieved. Looks like it might be about .010" too much headspace.

I mean, have you ever met ANYONE who in ANY situation thought that (at least since 1959) that there was any number of states other than 50?? A nice, easy round number like that??

None. I've never heard of such a person.

Just like his lack of Christian background, regardless of what his scum allies say. No Christian, in any scenario, would ever say "my Muslim faith" imho even when talking about Islam. It just doesn't happen.

When I buy vodka, I get the cheap stuff. Because I won't be drinking it straight, with my pinky finger sticking out. Vodka, ice, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, Clamato, and a garnish, in a salt-rimmed glass. All that mix will kill the taste of even bad vodka.

583 BTW, i believe i've mentioned it before, but i've had 2 awesome flights on Southwest, both Army related.

1st! one was home from Ft Hood, where we got on the plane in Killeen, then landed in El Asshole, and topped off with civilians.

when we took off from there, they announced that, since it was their anniversary, beverages were complimentary all the back to LAX.

i was in the rear, right next to the beverage lockers, so i got numeri Buttwipers all the way home, and was well buzzed when we landed. even better, my seatmates were "Hawt Texas Blonde" and her daughter.

i had lost my voice the night before due to allergies, but kept the two entertained with scribbles on a legal pad hand gestures until i got enough beer into me to croak some words.

had them both in stitches the whole way, much to the surprise/consternation of the rest of the unit their men folk.

2nd time was coming home from Boise ID, a day early instead of on the C-130.

got on the plane at the last fing minute (thanks 1/18th Cav idiots) and SWA held the flight.

planted my ass, in BDUs, ruck and all, and we took off. Stew came by and i asked about beer. picked the one micro-brew, which she came back with, and told me it was on the house, as it was warm, and that she'd put more on ice (we were only going to Reno) so free beer the rest of the way.

landed at Reno, found my gate, which had a bar right next to it.

checked in, then went to sit down. sat between a Cougar and a couple of business guys...

who all offered to by me drinks, which i accepted, regaling them with Army TINS stories.

got onto the plane, where that stew told me the same micro was also warm, so free.... laid over in Oakland, then eventually landed in Ontario, out in the IE, just a "little buzzed"

was met by the cougar of the time, and, while we were waiting for baggage, noticed some obvious GI's in civvies, waiting for their bags as well...

USMCR tankers on their way to 29 Stumps. i asked where they were from, and they said Idaho. i laughed and said, funny, i just came from there.

less than pleased, they said, yeah, we know, we were on the same planes...

sometimes, it was good to be Guard.

Well... it could explain why, if the Civil War was all about slavery, it took so long for the emancipation proclamation...."

Oh c'mon. Abe did not "love himself some slavery," he hated it and never wavered in that regard -- BUT preservation of the Union was always a higher priority. He said in 1862 that if he could preserve the Union without freeing ANY slaves, he would do it; if he could preserve the Union by freeing ALL slaves he would do it; and if he could preserve the Union by freeing SOME slaves (which is exactly what the Emancipation Proclamation did), he would do that.

Another issue frequently overlooked: not all slaveowners were secessionists. Particularly in border states, many slaveowners preferred to stick with the Union and NOT cast their lot in with the Rebels. That's why Lincoln specifically excluded border states and Union-occupied areas of the Confederacy from the Emancipation Proclamation -- he didn't want to alienate loyal slaveowners whose support might be critical to keeping those states from (literally) going South.

This is my one and only comment on this subject.

1) Condoleezza Rice is one of the smartest people in the country. I disagree with her on some issues but I tremendously respect her intellect.

2) I would bet good money that Rice knows exactly why slaves were "counted" as 3/5ths of a person and at the drop of a hat could deliver a graduate-level history lecture on the history of that compromise. The fact that she used the word "counted" indicates that she understands the issue.

3) Condoleezza Rice doesn't strike me as the type of person to make dicey rhetorical points. It's probably wrong to assume bad motives to a statement that is correct on its face.

4) Liberals would do almost certainly make a similar statement like that through either bad motives or ignorance. They wouldn't use a precise word like "count" either but instead say something like "blacks were considered to be worth 3/5ths of whites."

5) No offense to anyone, but I agree with WeirdDave's take on Rice's statement.

622 "This Fighter Pilot Saved a Bomber Squadron From German Fighter Attacks For over Half an Hour. Alone."
.
As soon as I read that, I knew it was Jim Howard. In his after-action combat report, he claimed 3 destroyed, 3 probably destroyed and 3 damaged. All of the bomber crews swore they saw 9 shot down. He made only passing mention of defending the bombers after his ammo ran out, just saying he flew cover, making feigned attacks until relieved when another fighter squadron arrived when they were over France on their return flight. The bomber crews are who publicized his astounding bravery once they were on the ground. Col. Howard was far too humble to toot his own horn, telling reporters only that he "saw his duty and he done it".
.
I attended an AVG reunion in 1991, their 50th anniversary, and I had a copy of Howard's book, hoping he was autograph it for me. Unfortunately, he was ill at the time and couldn't make the trip to California. To a man, all of the surviving Flying Tigers in attendance had unqualified praise for him, and considered it an honor to have served with him (and were happy to sign his book).

My first rebuild was a 400 ci beast out of a '69 Grand Prix. Wife-unit spun a bearing in it in a cold weather start. I borrowed an unheated garage, bought a come-along, and went at it. Pulled it, tore it down, and hauled everything to the machine shop. Bought new pistons and cam too, to soup it up a bit.

Hauled all that crap to another house, where I had hired a mechanic to teach me the assembly process. He taught me the value of PlastiGage, but he forgot to do one thing -- Turn the crank 90 degrees and repeat the gauging on the bearings. One journal was out of round on the replacement crank. So when we fired it up, it immediately started knocking. Fuckity.

Soon thereafter, I did my second engine rebuild solo; curiously enough, on a 400 ci beast with a rod knock.

It ran like a scalded dog, until wife-unit got t-boned in it and the car was totaled (she wasn't hurt).

PlastiGage -- Check twice, rebuild once.

637 So.

I hate, HATE! being called "Hon" by some chick half my age. This afternoon, the girl at Sephora said it 6 times during the course of my 2-minute checkout.

The only people allowed to call me "Hon": 60-something diner waitresses with beehive 'dos and cat's-eye glasses.

638 Because: Here's an Eliot Smith cover of a Beatles song.

Warmer and less effects than the original.

In other words, natives of Baltimore. It's OK hon, we forgive you for not getting our customs.

642 I try to mix it up a bit, interspersing my Hons with some Sweeties, Loves, and Sweethearts.

643 Eh, it's the 20-year-old girls calling me that, what bugs. I'm sure men have no problem with it.

I am not their grandmother and they are not nursing home aides.

Lived in DC ten years. Only ever heard it at Fell's Point. But I was 20-something and she was 102.

Allowed.
