Adoration Magi.jpg

The Adoration Of The Magi
Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi (Boticelli)

This piece is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It is essentially a family portrait of the Medici's, which makes me wonder whether in 500 years we will have any remnants of the rich and powerful of our age...

I sort of hope not.

That is a good question. I have no idea. Watercolor is my favorite medium, and we have some lovely originals from a Panamanian artist, and a Fort Worth lady who painted in Saudi. She painted a picture of a part of the Dirah Souk where my kids played, and used their blond, blue-eyed wiles to get free stuff from the merchants.

86 I regard Boticelli as one of the artist high points of his era but his work still reflects a bit of the stiffness in figures of this period. However, his use of color is breathtaking. I could read an entire book just on the materials and techniques used to create the paints he used. (I already have some books on how paints were made in general.)

I saw that his patron wanted family members as figures in this work. I wonder if the three guys on the left was a private joke between the patron and Boticelli.

There are several theories. If the figure looking at the painting is the artist, then it could be a way of signing his work. If not the artist, it could be a way of including the viewer in the event. Artists tried to make art as real a s possible. This was a way to make it feel more real, more relateable. Or it could be a wink at the viewer, saying "Ha ha. I'm here and you're not! Look how pius I am."

There's an old joke about a traveling salesman who makes a stop at a country store. While there, he buys a cigar and asks for a match.

"Take your pick," says the storekeeper, waving his arm toward a wall filled from top to bottom with boxes of matches.

"You must sell a lot of matches," says the salesman.

"Nope," the shopkeep answers. "But the guy who sells them to me sells a lot."

Athens man arrested again in assault involving pork shop

An Athens man arrested three months ago for allegedly assaulting his mother with a pork chop was arrested again early Wednesday for another incident involving his mother and a pork chop, Athens-Clarke County police said.

The gist of the story is, his 60 y.o. mother once again forgot to buy him cigarettes, so he threw the pork chop at his mother and head-butted her. His dad had to sit on him to restrain him until the police arrived. Oh, he was also charged with probation violation.

The whole incident started at 2:35 a.m. when his mother called the po-po to report he was trying to fight everyone in the home. He told the police someone ate his pork chop and now he had to eat noodles.

Yeah, Comey was just the frying pan. McCabe is the fire.

Just a quick recap from Daily Mail

Andrew McCabe, who was formerly the Deputy Director of the FBI and has temporarily taken over the intelligence agency, is also under review for his involvement in the Clinton scandal after his wife received funds from a close friend of Hillary for her political campaign in 2015.

-When Comey was fired, his deputy director, McCabe, took over the bureau.

-Before McCabe was appointed as the Deputy Director of the FBI, his wife Jill McCabe ran as a Democrat for the Virginia stat senate in 2015.

-Her campaign received funds from the state Democratic Party and a political action committee run by Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe.

-McAuliffe is a close friend of the Clintons and before his group, Common Good VA, donated to McCabe's campaign, Hillary Clinton headlined a fundraiser for the PAC.

157 Ah Religion..One of my Irish Catholic Emerg DRs send me this joke last night:

The Jewish Bookie

A Jewish bookie was at the races playing the ponies and losing his shirt.

He noticed a Priest step out onto the track
And bless the forehead of one of the horses lining up for the 4th race.
Lo and behold, that horse - a long shot - won the race.

Next race, as the horses lined up, the Priest stepped onto the track.

Sure enough, he blessed one of the horses.
The bookie made a beeline for a betting window and placed a small bet on the horse.
Again, even though it was another long shot, the horse won the race.
He collected his winnings, and anxiously waited to see which horse the Priest would bless next.

He bet big on it, and it won.

As the races continued the Priest kept blessing horses, and each one ended up winning.
The bookie was elated. He made a quick dash to the ATM, withdrew all his savings, and awaited for the Priest's next blessing that would tell him which horse to bet on.

True to his pattern, the Priest stepped onto the track for the last race and blessed the forehead of an old nag that was 100/1.
This time the priest blessed the eyes, ears, and hooves of the old nag.
The bookie knew he had a winner and bet every cent he had on the old nag.

He watched dumbfounded as the old nag pulled up lame and couldn't even finish the race.

In a state of shock, he went to the track area where the Priest was standing.
Confronting him, he exclaimed, "Father! What happened?
All day long you blessed horses and they all won.
Then in the last race, the horse you blessed never even had a chance.
Now, thanks to you I've lost all my money!"

The Priest nodded wisely and with sympathy.
"You aren't Catholic are you my son?"

"No, I'm Jewish."

"That's the problem", said the Priest,

"You couldn't tell the difference between a blessing and last rites."

177 The wife of a man blamed for one of the worst mass shootings in recent U.S. history has lost her appeal to be released from jail.

A panel of the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled last week that Noor Salman should remain in jail until her trial next March.

Salman is charged with obstruction and aiding and abetting her husband, Omar Mateen, who opened fire at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, last June. Forty-nine people were killed.

It goes back to a tradition that Jesus' brothers were really his step-brothers. Mary was Joseph's second wife and the brothers were his from another marriage. Jesus is Mary's only child.

Actually, Joseph was a hearty young carpenter who was working on an addition to a house, when the householder's daughter brought the hunky carpenter a glass of water. Mutual affection ensued.

Tragic thing, that crane falling on Joseph while working on Herod's palace. Not only left Mary and the eldest boy to raise all those younger kids, but also, Herod refused to pay damages or even Joe's back pay. Government, as always.

Mary and the ben Josephs muddled through, with Jesus assuming the father role. It was good, though, that Jesus thereby got mortal parenting experience, since he never got to have kids of his own. He was in all ways tested as a mortal, including dealing with the rebellious middle child.

256 I have mixed feelings about the Mormons dropping Scouting. Scouting used to be a fine program, but it's not for every boy and the church has used it as their youth program, so if you were a boy who just didn't like scouting, you spent a lot of time being miserable at church activities. Also, Scouting is expensive and sucks up a huge amount of funds. The girls' programs do not receive nearly as much money.

Still, it's sad. I know a lot of adult men who appreciated Scouting more and more as they got older.

So who gets to the Fed bailout first? California, Illinois or Puerto Rico?

Posted by: mustbequantum at May 11, 2017 10:42 AM (MIKMs)

CA effectively went bankrupt back around 2009. They could not pay off their bonds when they came due, and when they tried to sell more bonds to pay off the old bonds they had no takers. The all Democrat congress approved something like $500B to buy up their bonds. And Obama continued to buy their bonds even after all that money was gone.

PR went legally bankrupt last week when they defaulted on their debt and can't even pay the interest. The Democrats have been clamoring for a bailout for them as well but so far they can't get it though congress. So in the end all the banks who ought PR bonds will have to eat it.

1. California is the only one doing it right, so they end up sharing an unfair portion of the welfare burden as all the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses have streamed to the beckoning light of hope that is the State of California.
2. Ergo, it's really the fault of everyone else who is falling behind in creating utopia, such that there is a need for these refugees to flee to California.
3. Ergo ergo, pay up everybody. It will be our "fair share" of the burden that California bears.

As to EMP - I recently watched a program on the Dust Bowl. You have to realize the unbelievable power of mother nature. Anyway, they would have these storms, 200 miles wide, with powerful wind and dust. These storms created huge static electricity which charged the grid, phone lines, and automobiles. If you walked up and approached an automobile the spark would fly a foot and a half and knock a person down. Picking up the telephone was just as dangerous.

But no mention was made of electrical issues.

So make of this what you may.

I don't think the induced current in 12 gage wire is the issue.

It's when a mechanical field collapses around a bunch of very, very fine circuitry, which suddenly sees amperage it was never designed for.

My electrical knowledge is mostly limited to sticking forks in outlets though, so I'd be interested to hear actual intelligent commentary.

I did some aerospace level wiring for a large military contractor through a subcontractor. They're on it and have been for decades. So a lot of 'stuff' is hardened.

As to the nations electrical grid, that I'm not sure. They've either determined it's either totally unnecessary or they don't give a shit.

With your own recollections of our political leaders you can decide which is more likely.

Will it work, though?

Republican senators and representatives have to report to Republican electorates. Republican electorates would most likely generally hate the idea of a bailout of California. Like...if a Republican representative voted to bailout California a primary becomes a guarantee and a loss for the incumbent becomes very very possible.

While the institution of Boy Scouting has for the most part been OK, the moral rot seeping into it has been pervasive.

And yes, I believe that each Troop takes on it's own identity and moral compass.

But, As I see too many rules and regulations being re-interpreted
to a desired outcome, I think it has come time to personally move on in a
direction separate from BSA.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 11, 2017 10:45 AM (J+eG2)

Uncle Redux, until his passing a decade ago or so (God rest his soul) was actually General Counsel for the BS of A for almost 30 years. He was a very moral guy (despite being Harvard educated - sorry Uncle Redux!) and worked tirelessly to preserve the constitutional right of free association that the BS of A enjoyed (meaning, at the time, the right to exclude openly gay scoutmasters) which was antithetical to the Scouts' Christian calling. And, as he used to relate, that right was constantly under assault - and no matter how many cases they won and set precedent, even at the Supreme Court level, "teh gheys" and the ACLU continued to file suit (in bad faith he always said - sicne they knew that the cases had no chance of sucess).
Ahh the good old days.

After he passed the Scouts lost a bit of their moral compass and a lot of their backbone.
I miss my uncle. A good man and a good lawyer - he used to yell and get pissed about champerty ( look it up) to give you an idea.

The North East and CA however suffer from a lack of generation because of the NIMBYs, NAMBYs, and NOPEs. There was some Dem congressman on Tucker last night that kept screaming that even though he thought Comey should be fired, the timing is "suspect" and to prove it, the WH had just stated that President Trump had listened to the hearing and went to Sessions(who shouldn't be involved in who works for him, because Russia) and told the AG and Dep AG he wanted Comey out. That shows that Trump knew Comey is on to him and wanted him out.

It took Tucker most of the screaming match to get the Dem to finally say he agreed Comey should be gone. But the Dem spent 99% of the interview repeating that Trump wants to block being investigated. Tucker kept saying that Trump himself is NOT being investigated as per all of the investigators, yet the congress dumbass kept repeating the "investigation of Trump ties to Russia".

And yes, the NO statues are going to slavery-themed park/museum called The Whitney Plantation. It boggles the mind:

"[it] is a bizarre house of slavery horrors where statues of black kids stare
at you until you beg for forgiveness. Locals told me his is going to
have slave rides where you can cram yourself into the bowels of the ship
and tour around the Mississippi River to atone for your sins. Mitch [Landrieu]
stood to benefit from the carnage because he'd be the one selling the
statues and the left benefited because it furthers their narrative. Next
to the broken obelisk in Cummings' museum, he could put up his own
plaque explaining that this commemorated a time when racist whites
stormed city hall and murdered black politicians."

Comey's own remarks, in writing, after the fact :"... the POTUS can dismiss an FBI Director for ANY reason, or NO reason."

571 Strictly an academic point: taking pictures of torturing someone, then feeding their body to pigs, seems to completely defeat the purpose of that form of disposal. May as well have just blamed it on Some Puerto Rican Guy.

Very good site.

Gives a real idea of what you might be able to survive.

And even this close to DC, we are better off than I would have thought.

574 "Romney ...the good moderate Republican"

Things came out on Romney that say we dodge a bullet.

Obamacare may be repealed under Trump. Romney would have raised taxes, enforced the mandates and given more illegal money to the insurance companies.

Romney is not as good as Grubber. At least with Grubber you can easily see he is a L-S-of-S. Grubber doesn't wrap it in Elders Robes.

Romney as Governor was once involved in a While-you-were-out TV episode. Obvious that he was getting exposure for a Presidential run. That episode was a disaster. Very entertaining.

577 566 The question I had was - was that a ground blast
there at Bikini? I remember seeing videos of an early h-bomb test and it
was obviously sitting on the ground.

There were somewhere around 20 to 25 tests. I think most of them were underwater. The actual contamination is from residual fallout.

583 New robot woman TV program coming out. Robot has super powers when put into test mode. To keep testers from using its super powers without authorization it automatically disrobes whenever put into test mode. In the show it is always blocked from view by some inconvenient object. Whoever is viewing it makes a funny remark. Like, "Why did they put flashing LEDs on the tips of her breast?" The plot is how to use its super powers while finding a way to hide it from sight.
