Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The only way you can beat the lawyers is to die with nothing. Will Rogers

Quote II

When the doctrine of allegiance to party can utterly up-end a man's moral constitution and make a temporary fool of him besides, what excuse are you going to offer for preaching it, teaching it, extending it, perpetuating it? Shall you say, the best good of the country demands allegiance to party? Shall you also say it demands that a man kick his truth and his conscience into the gutter, and become a mouthing lunatic, besides? Mark Twain

Quote III

School teachers, taking them by and large, are probably the most ignorant and stupid class of men in the whole group of mental workers. H.L Mencken

Before satellites, before drones, The original eye in the sky.

As the moon hung high in the morning Cincinnati sky, an eccentric aeronaut blasts one last puff of coal gas into his balloon, the "Enterprise." It is April 20, 1861, and just eight days earlier the first shots had rang out at Fort Sumter and ignited the Civil War, a conflict that would eventually claim nearly 625,000 American lives. But on this day, dressed in a fancy silk hat and a black long frock coat, Prof. Thaddeus Lowe prepares for his latest and most important test flight. He knew that a divided Union would need him—and his balloon.

Functional intimacy, one learns something new everyday. "Can’t touch this: The psychological effects of functional intimacy"

Whether a nurse is prepping you for a shot at the doctor's office or you are being patted down at the airport before catching a flight, functionally intimate situations are often unavoidable. While being touched in these professional settings might be necessary for your health or safety, the sensation of being touched by a stranger is obviously very different than being touched by a lover or friend.

How do people react when in these situations of unavoidable functional intimacy?

We discuss Valu-Rite. We jokingly laugh and say "Here, hold my beer!" But not everyone is wired to drink. 10 questions you would like to ask a recovering alcoholic.

Alcohol is all fun and games until it's not anymore. It's clear that heavy drinking damages your insides—and possibly some relationships and bar stools. But much more can be destroyed when people start to become dependent on alcohol—which the NHS estimates in the UK is about 9 percent of men and 4 percent of women.

One could say A.A. is for quitters.

The bronze statue of the two famous Second World War leaders sitting on a bench – called simply Allies – was unveiled in Mayfair, central London in 1995 to commemorate 50 years of peace.

Before Elizabeth 'Fauxcahontas' Warren, there was Lillian Smith, Faux "Sioux" Sharpshooter.

And then there was Wenona, the Sioux girl.

Wenona, Cummins proclaimed, was not only the “champion rifle shot of the world,” but also the daughter of a chief named Crazy Horse and a white woman, born in a “tepee on the south bank of the Big Cheyenne, near Fort Bennett, Dakota,” and only 18 years old. Cummins offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who could best Wenona with a rifle at the Exhibition. Her extraordinary shooting prowess, he crowed, had been bestowed upon her by supernatural spirits of the Indian world.

In fact, “Wenona” was not a Sioux teen. She was 29-year-old Lillian Frances Smith, the daughter of a white Quaker couple from New England. A former performer in William “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s Wild West show, she had earned the scorn of the legendary Annie Oakley and had been cast aside to make her own way in the world.

I can't imagine living with a big-ass chip on my shoulder. Complaints about cultural misappropriation now Poverty Misappropriation. Want a tiny house? Why your guilty of being a poverty misappropriater.

. How many folks, I wonder, who have engaged in the Tiny House Movement have ever actually lived in a tiny, mobile place? Because what those who can afford homes call “living light,” poor folks call “gratitude for what we’ve got.”

And it’s not just the Tiny House Movement that incites my discontent. From dumpster diving to trailer-themed bars to haute cuisine in the form of poor-household staples, it’s become trendy for those with money to appropriate the poverty lifestyle — and it troubles me for one simple reason. Choice.

Choice? The ONT is so confused. We thought Choice was good. Only when the "Precious, Gifted & Our Betters tell us when "choice" is good or bad. A Moron needs a score card to keep track.

61 Mercy. I have seen some monstrous hail storms and hail damage in my life.

We had a big one rip through the northern Dallas suburbs around March of 2016. So many people driving around with bashed-in windows and so many houses with plywood over windows, skylights, and roofs. It wasn't until the end of the year when contractors finally finished all the work. We escaped with fairly minor damage.

The sound of a hailstorm with baseball-sized and larger hail is like being caught in heavy artillery fire.

Well if you can afford to just give your winter coat, boots etc to SA at the start of spring and so forth and enjoy (shudder) the process of shopping maybe having no storage might work out. But most of these folks have never been camping in wet weather and had to deal with drying clothes out in a small space.

Although I suppose if you are in town and living 'tiny' just for fun you can just drive the wet stuff to the laundromat. Still I'd rather have lots of luxurious space even though I tend to accumulate clutter.

Joyce's friend Jessica took her golfing this afternoon!  Joyce drove the cart for 4 holes.  They really enjoyed themselves on this extremely hot afternoon. Next week, Joyce and Her friend Roni will join the "dirty divas" mountain biking group for lunch- they're all looking forward to seeing her.

(Joyce was an avid mountain biker before the tumor)

Please keep praying that the time she has left is filled with joy.

[To my fellow, beloved Hordelings, thank you all in advance for your prayers and well-wishes for my sister and our family.]

And that windows exploit that was just patched could be served up by anything; email, html, webpage, advertising, anything that your 'real time protection file scanner scanning for malware' gets triggered and chokes on a specially constructed file, and then the hackers own you.

92 MisHum I was going to complain about the fails video, but the rest of the ONT makes up for it. Actually, I still am going to complain.

Fails videos are the browser-based manifestation of the abstract concept of being 14 years old. It's humiliating to see one on this smart Civil War blog. Please don't ever post one again.

However, this is, on the whole, even factoring in the fails vid fail, a badass ONT. I salute you.

Jeff thought he was having a heart attack after unknowingly eating a pot brownie and looked at his wife and said ' if I don't make it there's a bank account you don't know about'.

I guess you have to be a fan of the show to know why that's funny.

Although I suppose if you are in town and living 'tiny' just for fun you can just drive the wet stuff to the laundromat. Still I'd rather have lots of luxurious space even though I tend to accumulate clutter.

Posted by: Michael the Texan (formerly TEXIT) at May 10, 2017 10:04 PM (nvMvs)

I've never seen baseball-sized hail, but I have endured storms with golfball-sized hail a couple of times. One year, I had just come back from a road trip with a '53 Studebaker coupe on the trailer. I'd gotten it running, and drove it a quarter mile up the road to the neighbors' place to show it off. We sat in the kitchen, drinking beer, and the hailstorm started. Got a picture of grape-sized and larger hail pelting the old Studebaker, which did nothing more than clean the moss off the paint.

At home, a quarter mile south, my '96 Suburban got a load of dents, and both outside mirrors were smashed. The hail also nuked the shingles on the roofs of the house and garage, and punched big holes in the vinyl siding on both buildings. I got an insurance settlement, and ponied up some more money, and gave both house and garage a steel roof, and stucco instead of siding.

true story: lots of folks in LA are ditching their houses and living in RVs.

the politician's solutions?

create overnight parking areas for them, so they can drive in, hook up, and sleep, then kick them out in the AM and let them park all over the city.

i'll leave it as an exercise to the reader as to what effect this will have on the number of people living that way, and what effect it will have on tax rolls.

perverse incentives result in perverse results.

Our furry brother, Gimli, is a mix, some German Shepherd look & color, but shorter snout, broader face. He's getting on in years. Recently broke an ear, so now one side is always floppy. We added a kerchief for the first time in his life, and he didn't object. And I think he just looks good that way.

And I had a LOT of guns and ammo on board.

People do tend to drag an amazing amount of "stuff" around with 'em.

I have that bad habit, with tools and equipment. I could live in a small efficiency, as long as it's the 2nd story over a two car garage with attached workshop(s).

Inasmuch that I plan to retire aboard something along the lines of a 52 ft. Irwin, I'll actually have a lot more room belowdecks than even a 40 ft. diesel pusher RV with four slide-outs.

But yeah, those wildly over-priced tiny houses are a scam.

308 False and doubtful positions, relied upon as unquestionable maxims, keep those who build on them in the dark from truth. Such are usually the prejudices imbibed from education, party, reverence, fashion interest, et cetera. -John Locke

I think that when statesmen forsake their own private conscience for the sake of their public duties, they lead their country by a short route to chaos. -Uttered by Sir Thomas More in A Man For All Seasons by Robert Bolt

The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. He cannot rightfully be compelled to do or forbear because it will be better for him to do so, because it will make him happier, because, in the opinions of others, to do so would be wise, or even right. These are good reasons for remonstrating with him, or reasoning with him, or persuading him or entreating him, but not for compelling him, or visiting him with any evil, in case he do. -John Stuart Mill

331 I knew a few people into tiny houses because of poverty. I looked at a 700-ft former fishing cabin before I found my current home, which is a little under a thousand square feet. I bought it from a family of four.

One of the keys to small-house living is having things to do outside and it being SAFE. We had a couple drugged-out teens but they moved out of state with their parents (sorry, Texas). So the kids are riding bikes and playing ball in the street, and adults are launching their boats and reassembling pools.

Posted by: tu3031 at May 10, 2017 11:36 PM (qJhUV)

334 Well, the Peon Shop is now wired for sound! The amp I was messing with the other night, I put back together, and put it atop a wall-mounted cabinet over my tire machine. Then I spliced together four random lengths of geophone cord (3-conductor wire in really, really, tough jacket), and fitted it with RCA plugs on one end, and jacks on the other. A real long patch cord, in other words. Built a little splitter to plug into the "front speaker out" jack on this computer's sound card, so I can play my powered speakers here in the office, and at the same time send a signal to the amp in shop. Basically a "Y" connector.

Of course, no good plan goes off without a hitch, and one of the speakers I was using went open with no warning, after having worked here in the basement. Put a new driver in the box, and now I have stereo music in the shop, sourced from one of many, many mp3's of streaming audio I recorded over the years. Plenty loud, plenty clear, and no discernible hum.

I will probably cut a slit in the turf with my half-moon edger, and bury the line a few inches deep. It doesn't carry any power; just a volt or two of audio.

day 3: home station and off to LBNH for treatment (told to FOAD as i was just NG, and no different than a CHP officer with non-life threatening wounds)

day 3 late at home: knew no one in my chain, so called OTAG and got duty officer. relayed tale of woe. BN XO called 15 mikes or so later, said not to worry.

day 4: went back to LBNH with other injured GIs from the unit, and unit leadership. everyone was told to FOAD, as the USN didn't know where $$$ was going to come from to pay for it all. Some kindly RN dragged me into a treatment room and removed, cleaned and redressed my wound, and said "F the Chief" when her peer said that wasn't a good idea, as the Chief would be mad. 1st Sainthood nomination i ever made.

day 5 on: got treatment at LAAFS, whilst NGB, etc fought the issue out.

Could conceivably be an option for a very busy single person that is not at home much (but why not just get efficiency apartment?). For just about anybody else it is just virtue signalling. After the virtue signaling high wears off xe will be going nuts in xer eco-freindly box and trying to figure out an excuse why xe had to move back to a real house.

366 Pain level 12?

Motorcycle wreck, involuntarily donated a Gold Wing to medical science, circa Oct. '98.

Malicious ER staff administered only "pediatric" dose of Demerol. Later that night, Ortho, even with administering horse sedative of some kind, chose to manually set greentree fracture of tibula.

That "horse sedative", woke right up and passed up Secretariat at the Belmont.

The docs were lucky they were working on lower extremities, and not within arms reach. I was looking to kill one or both of them.

Oddly, that one has healed and never really bothers me, after.

Next day though, they put me into four + hour surgery, to rebuild my left ankle with four stainless drywall screws.

That one STILL HURTS.

I did have the good sense though, before going into that surgery, to ask 'em to debride and change the dressing on the road rash abrasion on my right forearm, while I was well and truly OUT.

That's a bit of pain I dodged. A rarity.

374 A Venerable Privilege

One of the central tenets of the broader Left is an axiomatic worldview of oppressors and the oppressed, the former gaining their lofty status through unearned privilege. In this Rawlsian view, because some children had a better upbringing than others, those who grew up in a good family had unearned privilege which must be countered in order to equalize society so that those without said unearned privilege will be on an equal status. From this, the Leftist secular catechisms oft wail, a utopia will spring forth based upon that Philosopher's Stone of absolute equity.

The spring operating the striker may be old too or gobbed up with old oil

It was a thing to use linseed oil on guns, and old Hoppes, as wonderful as it is, can polymerize into peanut butter-like goo just like old linseed oil.

If the spring is weak that can make the firing pin strike go weak.

No. STRIKER, not "hammer".

Striker is released by the sear, and is directly powered by the mainspring.

Striker / Mainspring channel is what's most often fouled by powder residue, and is the direct cause of soft striker strikes on the new cartridge.

Ultrasonic cleaners are the .22 bolties friend.

398 AOP you're in good hands with Jim and Mike's advice on gun troubleshooting. I have no idea of that rifle's design myself, so have nothing to add. Though it seems springs are the likely issue - either wear and tear, or fouling.

Speaking of guns (!), did the paperwork for an S ampersand W Model 60 this afternoon. Very good condition, CrimsonTrace grips (whose value, alone, made the deal a good one). Idea is that this might become the boss's bedside hospitality accessory - only centerfire handgun she's liked so far is a Colt snub that's too valuable to use in this role.

If this plan comes to naught ..... oops, another revolver in the stable (and Smith, and laser grips) . Hate when that happens.

Disassemble the bolt.

1. Inspect face of firing pin for damage
2. Inspect firing pin and bolt and make sure the firing pin can freely travel. Look to see how far the firing pin extends out from the bolt face. Make sure pin is not bent/damaged preventing full forward movement.
3. Inspect chamber face. Make sure there are no dents or chips in the spot that supports the cartridge rim where the firing pin strikes it.

I don't know Cooeys and these are generic rimfire checks. Dry firing can lead to the problems in the above inspection points in many (not all) rimfires.

LOL, lousgirl.

No gauging is working here.

LOL, the Lord's Prayer could be a lawsuit, but you might find a workaround it if you were clever.

Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at May 11, 2017 01:26 AM (di1hb)

Thank you.

1. Face of firing pin seems square and flat with no burrs.
2. Fully forward, it is flush with the front face of the bolt, meaning it's slightly raised above the round recess in the face of the bolt that accepts the base of the cartridge. But it can be pushed back a little.
3. Haven't looked at the face of the chamber. The rifle worked fine until the original bolt got lost.

My working hypothesis is that the back end of the firing pin is worn or damaged, or there is a divot in the end of the striker where it hist the firing pin. And gummy lube inside the bolt my be exacerbating the issue.

Step one: get fresh lube into bolt. If that fixes it, good. If not, go to step two: disassemble bolt, and examine internals for wear.

I don't care anymore, I can no longer condone or put up with their extreme virtue signaling, rage, slanders, smears, smirking etc.... Just post that their negative energy is effecting you during your work with the homeless, and the transgender half-way house.

And that while you respect their right to emote in what ever manner they wish, that your work with these downtrodden groups is too important to world peace.

And that you wish them well.
