Overnight Open Thread (6 May 2017)

This here is a shining example of why the media is ignored by intelligent people. What caused Venezuela's collapse is no mystery - except to economically illiterate journalists.

Oh and here's another one. ISIS appreciates the NRA's work. The issue? They both believe there are gunshow loopholes. There aren't.

Teaching Self-Control

This clever cookie box that teaches self-control assumes you just won't take a hammer to it. Which is a form of self control itself because it would be easier to just hurl it against the wall to smash it open without taking the time to get a hammer and break it open in a controlled fashion.

Medical Studies

Medical studies are almost always bogus. So are climate change studies.

Lucas King

Haunting take on classic John Williams Star Wars pieces.

Hedy Lamarr

I'm gonna have to check out this documentary. The 'mother of WiFi' gets her due in a new documentary. Today's actresses can't hold a candle to Hedy Lamarr's accomplishments.

Fake News

Unchecked fake news gave rise to an evil Empire in Star Wars. Nah. I'm pretty sure it was just Jar-Jar Binks that caused the rise.

Ticks

Tis the season morons so take precautions before venturing out into the woods. Ticks can spread a rare virus that's worse than Lyme Disease.

Dunkirk

This movie looks to be pretty good. I know some are worried by a PG-13 rating.

Pisner

Beer made out of actual piss exists. Ok, they don't really use piss in the brew but they used recycled urine to fertilize the fields of barley.

Whoa

Did the WaPo really publish this? Despite critics' claims, the GOP health bill doesn't classify rape or sexual assault as a pre-existing condition.

Cat Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by looking forward to being attacked:

40 re the "fake news" of SW3, A "Jedi rebellion" has been foiled, Palpatine says. (This is false. Palpatine ordered his troopers to shoot the Jedi in the back, a slaughter presumably carried out on thousands of planets.)

Er, except that the head of the freakin' Jedi Order did his best to kill Palpatine in person. Palpatine had no way of knowing how deep his enemies went in that order; he genuinely believed that his Order 66 was a pre-emptive strike against any further plotting.

More people means that there is more of a chance of people contracting diseases.

Better medical testing means that we now detect those diseases at a higher level than they used to.

Better widespread communications means that more people are made aware of diseases now than ever before.

A 100 years ago, a person would have died or just been really sick for a few weeks, and nobody outside of their family would have known about it.

Was watching it earlier today over on YouTube. The comments included posts by people who were irate that their weren't any French in the trailer (and before the comments start - Don't; the French troops in the pocket behaved admirably. Save the snark for the idiots in the French leadership). Fortunately, someone noted the presence of at least one French helmet to shut the whiners up.
Posted by: junior at May 06, 2017 10:29 PM (ziea5)

After the French surrendered (again), most of the French troops who had been evacuated to England demanded to be repatriated to France.

Five battalions of the 42nd Foot were abandoned at Dunkirk as part of the rear guard. Admittedly, Tommies, not Regulars. But still, Jocks.

Posted by: Fox2! at May 06, 2017 10:40 PM (brIR5)

204 @169 Junior, hopefully that is better mentioned in the movie. Yes, more than just the BEF was rescued from the beaches at Dunkirk, the core of the French army that returned in 1944 came from those the British rescued
------------------

Unfortunately, a lot of them also turned around and went right back to France (since France hadn't surrendered yet, even though everyone could see the writing on the wall). Churchill was understandably upset about that.

Others got out of France in other ways. DeGaulle, for instance, was never trapped in the pocket.

I've got no urge or sentimental feeling for my very distant German cousins. I think Germany became the ugly mess it was in the 20th century because millions of "Germans", Germanic peoples, came to America in the 19th century and were the ones that wanted something better, and changed the demographics of Olde Germany (in a subtle way), the one that Bismark united.

LOL. My grandpa went back to the old country that he left when he was 16. It was freaking hysterical. He spent the whole time bitching that the roads that were effed up 40 years ago were still messed up and nothing had changed. He was INCREDIBLY happy to be in America. Also taunted a Russian soldier about how little money he was paid. LOL.

Pre-modern Germany is fascinating. It developed a liberal-conservative polity like other northern European countries (though smaller and later). But Bismark defeated them by instead getting the aristocracy to buy off the socialists with social programs.

This, by the way, is the origin of the welfare state...and the modern left.

Most of Gander Mountain's stuff is ridiculously expensive. I used to shop for camping stuff there when my son was in Scouts, but if you have time, the internet will get you better prices. Internet shopping is going to kill (well, it already is killing) a lot of brick and mortar retailers who have ridiculous prices.

On the positive side, I've avoided this guy for a year, and, probably won't have to deal with him at all for at least a year or so- biz reasons. The first time I had to talk to him-- about six months after I verbally eviscerated him-- [once again business] he could barely speak and was almost incoherent. This time was the opposite. He wouldn't shut up. It was... inappropriate, unwelcome and horrible.

On the positive side, I bitched to my boss, who now may very well agree that the guy and his firm are Not Right For Us, and I can avoid them.

The Germans are pretty much responsible for Lenin.

They had him in one of their jails and decided to release him back to Russia during WWI so that he could create chaos in Russia knocking them out of the war. It worked a little too well.

So, the Germans can be thanked for the rise of Nazism and Communism.

One of my French friends who stayed with the company when we were bought out in 2011 has just moved to Singapore (stayed with the company). I didn't quite get the reason why, but I suspect.

So I knew 2 of my grandparents were all German, and there were bits on the other sides. So I should be over 50% German.

Did the DNA thing and I'm must less than that. Lots of Scandi and Iberian. These folks did wander around a bit.

And I'm really a bit Irish, thought it was all Scots-Irish. Weird. And less than 1% Jewish, which I suspected, learned a few yrs ago.

In the 1980's, it was best for the women to find a seat as the men beat the shit out of each-other in the Mosh Pit.

We would return to our women, sweaty and beaten as a reprieve from the exertion of playing free-safety for an hour.

When the women offered us comfort, we would buy them drinks and, (of course), those concert tickets.

As the women discussed the "oddity" of the Mosh Pit, we were building manly hormones and working-off steam from the work-week.

528 Years ago, a station I worked at was bought by an out-of-state media group. You've heard of shoestring budgets? These guys would cut the shoestring in half and try to run it through both shoes. Technical problems wouldn't get fixed, staff was slashed until it was just me in charge of two stations. The bosses never called me unless it was to yell at me. I stayed there way too long, and when I finally did leave, I was so burned out I left broadcasting for a few years.
How this relates to your situation...I don't know, except that I understand that kind of frustration.

And, if I were meeting any of you fine people, male or female....if I were visiting your cities, and you said, "Hey if you need a place to stay, feel free..." I would consider it.

So, the only reason for me to not consider it would be I am thinking something is going to happen, which is a bit presumptuous of me, no? I'm from Indiana...I know the art of being a good hostess and being accommodating and offering people a place to sleep at night.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at May 06, 2017 11:53 PM (/ZEVC)

Heh. I went to the Red Deer vintage car swap meet again today. There a little gun show going on in another building at the fairgrounds, so I popped in there, because I was looking for a replacement bolt for my Cooey model 750 single-shot .22 rifle. Found a guy who had lots of gun parts, but he said he had sold out all the bolts to fit that model, and that he can't keep any. Said it's one of the hottest-selling gun parts he deals with. I guess they have a propensity to fall out and get lost.

Anyway, another visitor at the show overheard all this, and said he had 2 or 3 of them. So he's going to mail one to me, and then I get to send him a check for $65. Woo-hoo! And I paid less than $65 for the whole rifle some 40 years ago. Sigh.

That line of thinking assumes 1) That he is interested in me 2) That we have any sort of chemistry when we meet, which is a crap shoot. 3) That this offer wasn't made from a purely gracious, friendly level.

So, in a way....I am unfairly and harshly judging him by just assuming he is wanting something physical. Maybe he is just trying to be a gracious host.

I really, really, REALLY love Wish You Were Here. Lots of really meaningful lyrics in there.

Also, during various emotional melodramas, I've found The Wall to be pretty helpful. Really love "Stop," "Waiting for the Worms" and of course, "Comfortably Numb." The latter made me cry when I Roger Waters do it live.

/for reasons I don't understand, I get wrapped up in shows, and get really emotional sometimes.

Wow, thank you for a comprehensive list there. I love lists.

Personally...I prefer to be the one to travel. I know it may not be gentlemanly, but even if he said, "Hey I want to visit you," I would still probably want to visit him, or at least meet somewhere neutral, first. This way, I get to have an adventure and see places I've always wanted to go. Rather than have him on my turf and simultaneously have to entertain, and worry about friends and family and work and all of that...I can just go away, shut my mind from my "real life," and see what's what. I actually know a lot of girls who have travelled TO their significant others who feel the same way. It is almost more empowering to be the traveler than the travelee.

I am asking if he is interested, because he has not stated that he is interested. So, yeah this whole, "You could stay with me" thing had me a bit...off my game.

There is nothing "off" about it...I mean meeting him, at least. I would be and plan to be honest with my parents. They deserve to know and should know my plans, itinerary, where I will be at any given time. I haven't told them anything yet, as there's nothing to tell.

Thank you....I love you too.

Yes, because he's a guy and you're a girl. (And not just a girl, but an 'Ette.) Men and women CAN be just friends, but it's not as likely with a single man and a single woman.

Even if it ends up that way, it probably wasn't his intention.

Men are different than women. Our natural, genetic, primal impulses are very strong in this area.

For example, if I met you, would you "test boundaries"? Probably not. You'd treat me like any other horde member...guy or girl.

That line of thinking assumes 1) That he is interested in me 2) That we have any sort of chemistry when we meet, which is a crap shoot. 3) That this offer wasn't made from a purely gracious, friendly level.

If a guy is friends with a woman, he's wanted to fuck her. Not necessarily date her, but there is some attraction. It's the way guys are wired. We tend to look at women we're friends with and find attraction there. Women tend to look at guys they're attracted to, and look for a friendship.

Shibumi is correct that a lot of women are oblivious to this. It's why guys talk about the "friend zone" with such disdain.

He's not a bad guy because he extended the invitation, even with an "ulterior" motive. He's testing the waters to see where the two of you stand.

Because the latter hits us directly in our feelings. Men don't handle or understand feelings nearly as well as women.

It feels like our guts are ripped out.

Where as the former...we're just a bit disappointed.

710 691 I've been thinking about getting a truck with a loudspeaker on top, taking it to riots, and playing recorded laughter, like canned laughter from sitcoms or talkshows to drown out whatever crap is coming out of the rioters' mouths. just laugh at them. maybe a whole fleet of trucks with laughing loudspeakers.

what do you think?

Posted by: the bear at May 07, 2017 02:25 AM (6FqZa)

712 Gosh, Alex, I can't imagine why.

Like I said, women tend to confuse cause and effect. We're not friends with you because we want to get into your pants (well, not always). We want to get into your pants because there's already an interpersonal connection that suggest you're not going to turn into a crazy psycho stalker.

On your first point though...I mean, you don't even know me. I'm shy and awkward and a bit neurotic. And, not particularly attractive. Pretty yes, attractive no. Definitely not a sexual person. More an innocent elfin creature. I can't imagine in my wildest dreams one, much less multiple, of my friends being like..."Oh yeah, let me get some of that."

I'm pretty sure there's a whole subset of fetishes devoted to that specific type of woman. And you don't have to be a supermodel. The whole point is that guys 1) aren't super picky, especially if it's physical and nothing more, 2) are actually turned on by personality. Since they're your friends they already have a good connection, which is going to make you more attractive.

You haven't been looking for just sex, but a relationship. Once the One-Night-Nate realizes that you're only interested in the long term with no "free previews", he's going to bail because it's not a good "investment" of his time.
