My Kind of Politics Walter Lippmann on Calvin Coolidge: I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution or that have failed their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is "needed'' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents "interests,'' I shall reply that I was informed that their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can.Precious little of any of that in politics these days. Sad! Update From Room 101 Google Redefines The Word ‘Fascism’ To Smear Conservatives, Protect Liberal Rioters Google defines fascism as, “an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization.”So now when people type the word into the world's most popular search engine, they will be informed that “a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.” (definition courtesy of Merriam-Webster) is now “right-wing”. I think most SF franchises have *something* to be said for them, but also have major failings, like Star Trek's unexplored socialism (and episodic resets), Stargate's episodic resets and slow progress, Farscape's "a little too far outside the box" thinking, and of course Star Wars has George Lucas. Why is there not an exact number? Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr --- IIRC - there were a number of factors. A number of the injured were driven off from the track by bystanders to seek care and, as such, were not counted by responders as injured or dead. Oh, look, WD is a "Space European Union" fan.
I think most SF franchises have *something* to be said for them, but also have major failings, like Star Trek's unexplored socialism (and episodic resets), Stargate's episodic resets and slow progress, Farscape's "a little too far outside the box" thinking, and of course Star Wars has George Lucas. Interestingly SW has the largest and wildest "expanded universe." Both SW and ST have an expanded universe that's more interesting than the original. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at May 04, 2017 10:05 PM (wB8Tg) TNG Star Trek was interestingly pro-life. The thing I always find interesting is that the episodes that get praised for addressing the issues of the day are without a doubt some of the worst episodes of any of the series. Stargate was fine but not something I was ever tied to having to watch. Farscape got a bit too strange. Star Wars was always meant to be good vs. evil in fairly delineated lines. I think most sci-fi has troubling morality issues that the runners/creators don't consider. Two examples are Forbidden Planet which handled it well and The Day the Earth Stood Still which handles it horribly. Posted by: WOPR - Nationalist at May 04, 2017 10:18 PM (J70i0) 95

So, about a month ago I had a talk with my account, who is a lovely woman. She looked at me and said "I don't think you'll ever get married." I'm not angry she said that, and certainly didn't disagree, but, in the big picture, I'm not sure I'm Wife Material, which is something I just realized. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm actually not. Not because of slutty/materialistic/shallow/psycho or any of the normal reasons, I think I'm just too independent. Then add in the fact that I haven't had a date in 12 years, I guess that means I'm Officially Off the Market, and instead, have been relegated to a metaphorical box in the back room, behind the recalled dog food. I probably would be more upset about this ,but I have to figure out how to get a 25 year old hook off a hollow wood door without damaging it. Posted by: shibumi at May 04, 2017 10:36 PM (8zWAk) 153

I once sold like 5000 novels. That means I have a hard time recommending great ones because so many blur together.
I am afraid that new series have to either follow the Mainstream TV model and be as gut-wrenchingly emotional as possible at all times (basically most TV has become Lifetime TV), or just go low and slow (budget and action) like some/most of the comic-based TV shows (and plenty of other shows). Epic Space Opera may be relegated to the Big Screen. Mind you, Farscape was "too expensive" a $1 mil per ep, and Friends was $10 mil per ep. Le sigh. Star Wars is not deep, not thought provoking. It's simply good fun. I will always love moments like when Lando delivers the heroes to Vader. What did Han do? HE FUCKING OPENED FIRE! FORCEFULLY! Speaking of combat photography. this photo appears to from the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, October 1942 aboard USS Enterprise. A TBF-1 Avenger pilot is given last minute instructions and information. Namely the speed of a Jap CV and the time it was sighted. The second sign tells the pilot to not wait for Hornet's air group.

Posted by: JAS at May 04, 2017 11:07 PM (EX4Wr) ?!?! Lots of CGI, almost everyone in makeup, everyone in custom costumes, huge sets, large number of main characters... it adds up quick. A lot of people can't get the fact that there was puppeteering instead of CGI or people with turtles on their heads. That seems to be the most common objection. Mind you, a few years later people were mad for physical effects instead of CGI, but there you go. Timing. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at May 04, 2017 11:14 PM (wB8Tg) 261
Pournelle's CoDominium. Psychic in many ways!
I don't know, Ken. I can't recall the name of the series because I think I only read a short story from it in one of the There Will Be War anthology series but maybe the one where women have taken over running the world and turned it into a Matriarchy where fags make up a big part of the civil service (in the story driven by sex selection making men the vast majority of the future population) might be more accurate in the future. (Even if the Matriarchy turns out to mainly be "feminist men" rather than literally women.) The story had a handful of real men, Space Marine types, stranded with a bunch of the elite types including the fag class. The Space Marines called them "Momma's Boys" in a reference to the Matriarchal class. Posted by: andycanuck at May 04, 2017 11:15 PM (nlbfN) 262

Quick thoughts while on break.
Trek Vs. Wars Wars wins any conflict hands down. Hyperdrive can take ships across the galaxy in a matter of days or weeks, while warp drive takes decades. Imperial ships hurl weapons in the gigaton range, while Federation ships fire torpedos rated in the tens of megatons. The empire can construct massive planet destroying space stations in secret, due to a massive galactic economy far in excess of anything that the Federation has. Speed, firepower, and numbers. TOS vs TNG My personal theory is that after ST VI, the Federation voters were so disgusted by the plot by Starfleet that they elected the equivalent of a Nader/Sanders administration, which spent the next few decades gutting the military and "fundamentally transforming" it. They were helped by the Romulan withdrawal from galactic affairs and the Klingon disarmament. By the time of TNG, the Federation has expanded so much that ships are far flung on exploratory missions, and Starfleet has trouble mobilizing enough forces to fight a border war against the Cardassians. B5 I don't think it holds up as well as it used to. Also, I think Clarke is a tragic figure. They should have implied that the Shadows were influencing President Santiago in order to have the Earth Alliance lead the Shadow side in the coming war. Then Clarke would have been a brutal figure, but one who wasn't entirely wrong about the influence of alien powers in Earth affairs. A futuristic Pinoche who comes to a worse end. How could Farscape be that expensive. The Production values were so low. Posted by: JAS at May 04, 2017 11:07 PM (EX4Wr) The animatronics were very cutting edge for their time. The show was basically a way for the Jim Henson company to show off their capabilities. The characters weren't CGI generations, they were live puppets, and often cost a lot of money and time to build. Posted by: Colorado Alex in Exile at May 04, 2017 11:19 PM (fKWf6) 271

He goes from a (brilliant) frat-boy turned astronaut into a man that marches up and down a peace conference table with a nuclear bomb on his belt. And you can see him gradually go from A to B because of the crazy world around him and how he adapts to it. They even copy him and *don't get rid of the copy right away*, he sticks around and complicates the *hell* out of everyone's lives. Because getting rid of the copy is the easy out. The story of the lost hiker is tragic. The article says "she was prepared" but also goes on to say she had a propensity for getting lost. It would seem, although she had candles, was unable to build a campfire. People depend on cellphones way too much. They are nice to have of course, but one needs to know how to operate without one. That means map, and compass. Orienteering is a great skill to have and not particularly difficult with practice. For her purposes anyway. Posted by: Common Tater at May 04, 2017 11:27 PM (pQrYJ) 297

There's just this.. notion that is put out there that mountain lions and wolves don't attack people. Or, grudgingly, that they are "extremely rare." Now it is true they were very rare for quite a while, and that is because they were killed on sight, and extirpated from their range. As their numbers become more common - well I won't give it away, but you can figure it out.

Wars wins any conflict hands down.
I'll give you that SW ships can run further, and they need that ability, because they wouldn't have a prayer of even engaging ST ships. ST ships would blow all of them up from warp before SW ships even knew they were around. It's not even about the relative merits of each universe, it's simply that SW tech isn't even close. It would be like the Constitution trying to fight the Ronald Reagan. Posted by: Weirddave at May 04, 2017 11:42 PM (iJGd7) 335

I've thought - if I'm lost in the woods like that, no hope of getting out on my own (although I do have a gps built into my head) then after 3 or 4 days go by with no rescue, I'm starting a forest fire. That always brings rescuers out, no matter where it happens.
Now I do realize there's a real trick in starting a fire like that out in the woods and living to tell the tale, but I think I could figure it out if I could find some good rocks to hide in. I don't know if I would have the guts to do what some local guy here in east texas did when he was way out in the fields and his tractor turned over, hopelessly trapping his arm on a night when it was going to freeze. He cut off his arm at the elbow with a pocket knife, put a tourniquet on it, walked 2 miles to his car, and then drove himself 20 miles to a hospital. Now that's tough. Yep, it's just enough to know what direction to travel, in a very general way, that she would have hit a trail. An inconvenience at worst.
Some years ago a National Park Ranger related a story to me. I asked him why a helicopter had been hovering over an area of the park, as I thought they were prohibited. Well, they are, except, I guess, in a search and rescue. Seems some chick had dropped acid, and Canyonlands is pretty bizarre all on its own, and she freaked out and ran away from her group, and thought all the searchers were trying to kill her Eventually she stumbled upon a jeeper after a few days, who unceremoneously dumped her off at a ranger station. Ah, Mike Hammer, you're watching TCM! I watched both of the Black Lagoon shows earlier tonight. The first Creature story has got to be the most erotically voyeuristic piece of film done in the fifties - that part where the monster is swimming under her, ogling her swimsuit for the longest time? (and we, the audience, are treated to the same ogling view)
And then the 2nd Creature movie, Revenge, was just mean. They have the male lead torturing the creature and then saying things like "He appears to be remarkably intelligent. He seems to recognize that I am coming here to zap him with this giant 50,000 volt cattle prod. Interesting." After enough of that, you WANT the creature to go berserk and start busting some heads. 206,
"Bab5 was great for a number of reasons. It's treatment of religion was one. It's "this is how you get a dictatorship and why fighting is important" storyline was another. He even had an EarthGov official say "Peace in our time" in one episode. Sadly, the first season is a poor lead-in for the seasons that follow. Posted by: junior Agreed. The fifth season had a "rushed" feeling to it. I read that they didn't think they were going to get a fifth season so they did the Series finale at the end of Season 4. Alas, they did get one and had to come up with some ideas for Season 5. Still, one of the best Sci Fi show ever! " The first season set up many of the story lines/arcs that were to follow. One difference with it was JMS who thought up the entire story didn't write many of the 1st season episodes but did write just about every one after that. Fans, at the time, were very unhappy that Jeff Sinclair left as the station commander after the first season. They did think that the 4th season would be the last and JMS pushed things that would have been in the 5th into the 4th to have cloture. The actual ending was filmed then but with the renewal for the 5th it wasn't shown until the end of the 5th season. The 5th has some good episodes. However nothing beats, for me, "Comes the Inquisitor" and "Severed Dreams" plus the movie "In the Beginning." Posted by: geoffb5 at May 05, 2017 12:19 AM (d3wbb) 448

Bolos were mentioned by redc1c4 upthread. By those lights, counting artificial intelligences, the best "evil" character in the franchise history was in TOS, the special guest star of _The Doomsday Machine_. A huge ancient robot that would not communicate or interact other than to kill you. With all of the singleminded lethal mechanical focus of a Terminator, except many orders of magnitude larger. There was a reference to some character in Bonanza (Hop Sing) on the previous thread. I'd never heard of him, but when I looked on wikipedia it said he was an asian (previously referred to by 'oriental'). Why is that so offensive? This one comes right out of room 101 too. The left knows (and they're right), that if you control the language you can control the people. When Winston Smith finally breaks down and allows them to define reality as whatever Big Brother says it is using words that mean whatever BB says they mean-that's when they've won. Shifting definitions of words and evolving lists of what's "offensive" are the bush league version of this process. 486 My dad loved Bonanza, we watched it religiously when I was young. I do have to say that Hop Sing was to Asian characters what Step'n'Fetch it was to black ones.
There's an old radio program from the 50s, starring John Dehner, I think it might be Paladin, where he has an asian sidekick when he is in town named "Hey Boy." Very bad accent, the whole nine yards. "Heya Mistur Pawadin..." I guess Jack Lord was considered for the Pike/Kirk role. I can picture that. Not sure how it would have worked. Fine I suppose. California Seeks To Tax Rocket Launches
The proposal says that California-based companies that launch spacecraft will have to pay a tax based upon "mileage" traveled by that spacecraft from California. (No, we're not exactly sure what this means, either). The proposed regulations were first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, and Thomas Lo Grossman, a tax attorney at the Franchise Tax Board, told the newspaper that the rules are designed to mirror the ways taxes are levied on terrestrial transportation and logistics firms operating in California, like trucking or train companies. The tax board is seeking public input from now until June 16, when it is expected to vote on the proposed tax. The federal government already has its own taxes for commercial space companies, and until now no other state has proposed taxing commercial spaceflight. In fact most other states, including places like Florida, Texas, and Georgia, offer launch providers tax incentives to move business into their areas. https://science.slashdot.org/story/17/05/04/2139204 california- seeks-to-tax-rocket-launches-which-are-already-taxed "Based on mileage traveled." Posted by: torquewrench at May 05, 2017 12:41 AM (qJjMA) ++++ Twitter is using a video format that is not built into XP (nor I think Vista) machines. It is built into Win 7. Most browsers, like PM and FF, look to the OS for the codec. So, by default, the video won't play. The codec is partially owned by Google, so they built it into Chrome. But, this only applies to the actual Chrome distributed by Google. It is not in Chromium or any of the Chrome variants. I think that's because Google won't let any other browsers include it unless they pay licensing to Google. If you are on an old version of Windows, the only way to get those videos to play in the browser is with Chrome. Or, you can download the video, and then it will play with VLC, since they also have the codec built in. Not sure of the ins and outs with Linux. Posted by: Anon Y. re: Taxes
An interesting blurb I read somewhere is Trump, or someone in his Administration, is proposing eliminating the Federal income tax deduction for state income taxes paid. It would be a hit on residents of high taxed blue states like NY, IL and CA. They state that blue states get away with high taxes because taxpayers don't feel the full bite thanks to the Fed income tax deduction for the high state taxes. I'm all for this change. Hit the blue states where it hurts them the most, their residents bitching to The Powers That Be about high tax rates. In other words, make the blue states pay their fair share of Fed income taxes. I'll even be kind so there's no rash of sudden heart attacks: Phase out the deduction by 20% per year over five years, just like they did with the interest paid deduction. Well night all.
Win7 64-bit is behaving itself again after developing a bad config. Had to restore from a 20 day old backup point. Then do Win updates. Finally managed to fix AVG by doing an uninstall and reinstall which I think was the culprit because the nasty bugger was locking up. Posted by: Anna Puma at May 05, 2017 01:22 AM (QF8oJ) 567

Posted by: Weirddave at May 05, 2017 01:18 AM (iJGd7) I don't see any, either, since I have Automatic Update turned off. The way I figure it, Win 7 is working OK for me, no problems. Don't try to "fix" it. If I hear from the Horde, or other trustworthy sources, that a specific update is needed to patch a security hole, then I can manually install that. I remembered getting burned by an XP update that killed my ability to record streaming audio off the Internet as I listened to it. DRM crap foisted on us by MS. If I didn't have to have both Win 7 and XP available to me to run logging programs, I'd shitcan Windows altogether and go 100% Linux. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 05, 2017 01:25 AM (0deF2) 568

Q: What do Barry Goldwater and Paul Revere have in common?
A: We'd probably arrest them both on sight today. Ronnie: "Is he the brash and shallow and trigger-happy man they say he is? Well I've been privileged to know him "when." I knew him long before he ever dreamed of trying for high office, and I can tell you personally I've never known a man in my life I believed so incapable of doing a dishonest or dishonorable thing. This is a man who, in his own business before he entered politics, instituted a profit-sharing plan before unions had ever thought of it. He put in health and medical insurance for all his employees. He took 50 percent of the profits before taxes and set up a retirement program, a pension plan for all his employees. He sent monthly checks for life to an employee who was ill and couldn't work. He provides nursing care for the children of mothers who work in the stores. When Mexico was ravaged by the floods in the Rio Grande, he climbed in his airplane and flew medicine and supplies down there. An ex-GI told me how he met him. It was the week before Christmas during the Korean War, and he was at the Los Angeles airport trying to get a ride home to Arizona for Christmas. And he said that [there were] a lot of servicemen there and no seats available on the planes. And then a voice came over the loudspeaker and said, "Any men in uniform wanting a ride to Arizona, go to runway such-and-such," and they went down there, and there was a fellow named Barry Goldwater sitting in his plane. Every day in those weeks before Christmas, all day long, he'd load up the plane, fly it to Arizona, fly them to their homes, fly back over to get another load. During the hectic split-second timing of a campaign, this is a man who took time out to sit beside an old friend who was dying of cancer. His campaign managers were understandably impatient, but he said, "There aren't many left who care what happens to her. I'd like her to know I care." This is a man who said to his 19-year-old son, "There is no foundation like the rock of honesty and fairness, and when you begin to build your life on that rock, with the cement of the faith in God that you have, then you have a real start." This is not a man who could carelessly send other people's sons to war. And that is the issue of this campaign that makes all the other problems I've discussed academic, unless we realize we're in a war that must be won." And we still are. What percent of men never had a beard? I've noticed male coworkers go through "beard" phases and leave them and start looking presentable again. And some who slipped in to that phase and haven't yet emerged. The closest I've ever got to a beard is when I'm on a bender on a 3 day weekend. But that would be an interesting ONT subject: how many men never grow beards. How many that do regret it and revert to being presentable?

For a brief time, I had a beard in college. Then shaved it off, keeping the 'stache. When I began to get serious about getting a job, the 'stache went. 35 years later and with my working career behind me, the 'stache is back. But no goatee or stupid soul patch. And if all you can grow is thin stubble that looks like your three day bender or, worse, an older woman's facial hair, give it up. My 'stache is becoming a handlebar type quite nicely, thankyouverymuch. Even had a local shopkeeper with a 'stache ask me how I grew a handlebar. I said, 'Genetics' (east European/Bohunk). As a helpful hint, mind you. I could tell she was always disappointed when I came out after showering with my face shaven but that caterpillar still on my upper lip. Sorry, Ma, but I'll meet my maker with this thing. But some guys look better with a 'stache, some don't. A 'stache depends on one's facial features as well the thickness of the upper lip hair. If one can still see skin under a mustache, give it up. But I really loathe the hipster soul patch nonsense. And a goatee makes every guy look like Vladimir Illyich. It makes no sense to deploy troops but tie one hand behind their back at the same time. "Rules of engagement" that are clearly absurd, and written by idiots. As the photograph shows, even training is dangerous. Bad things happen. There is unfortunately no other way. We eliminate unnecessary risks, but not all risks. Maybe, in my more uncharitable moments, have comento understand liberals anti-war sentiment. At least some of them. They know their leaders will cut and run at the first opportunity, leaving everyone in the lurch. So why bother?
The US "protects its interests" around the globe, but leaves its own borders wide open? Then the veterans from two wars ago or so, are living under a bridge, but the same government is importing the natives? Yeah, no, that's not how it works. That's not how any of this works. Star Wars is fantasy, not SciFi.
SciFi is generally based off actual scientific theories and applications. Warp theory, particle transportation, long range communication, video chat, worm holes, string theory, etc. Fantasy is what it is. Lightsabers, solid light bolt weapons, hyperdrive engines, the force, sentient space slugs that run organized crime syndicates.
