And it's prompted three class action lawsuits, several alleging fraud, and one naming damages to the tune of $100 million.
The "Fyre Festival" was co-organized by Ja Rule, who I've heard of but I have no earthly idea who he actually is or what he does. I have some vague memory he's involved in rap music. He's not actually a Millennial, because he's like 41 or something. But he seems to be a Millennial in spirit, and in ability. The story about this Festivus-style festival is kinda old -- almost a week old, in fact -- but I'm not hip so I didn't know about it until an hour ago. This is the Most Millennial story I've ever written up. The event was also co-organized by a guy named Billy McFarlane, a true Millennial. This guy started a credit card aimed at Millennials called something really fucking stupid -- Magnises. What the fuck. That's not even close to a word. It sounds like he just took "Magnum condoms" and "penises" and mashed them together. The credit cards are black because Of Course They Are. I guess the idea is "Hey, my black credit card? Means I have a magnum penis. Just like it says on the tin." They paid a lot of models and "influencers" -- idiots with big accounts on Twitter and Instagram -- to promote this "festival," to be located on an island in the Bahamas. These models and influencers were reportedly paid $20,000 each as a minimum, even for the minor, 2nd-rate instagrammers. (Another report says a $10,000 minimum, but several claim $20,000.)He spent $250,000 on a single Instagram post from Kim KardashianThe venue was advertised as being a "private island" once owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar.

"These 'sponsored posts' were in direct violation of Federal Trade Commission guidelines on disclosing material connections between advertisers and endorsers," the suit alleges. "Social Media 'influencers' made no attempt to disclose to consumers that they were being compensated for promoting the Fyre Festival. Instead these influencers gave the impression that the guest list was full of the Social Elite and other celebrities."
Their promises to registrants also kept changing over time. Pablo Escobar never owned an island in the Bahamas, and even if he had, the festival was located on an abandoned development site on a public beach near a Sandals resort.I guess "Party on a private island once owned by a notorious narco-terrorist" sounds better than "party on an abandoned development site just a stone's throw from super-exclusive Sandals Bahamas."

Serious logistical planning for the festival didn’t even begin until late February or early March -- less than two months before the thousands of people McFarland had sold a luxury vacation on a private island were scheduled to arrive. The toilet and shower supplier, who did not get the Fyre Festival contract, told the organizers it would cost north of $1 million just to order the equipment -- a rush-order mark-up he unironically referred to as "disaster pricing." That number did not include the cost of shipping the equipment to the island or the high cost of the barge needed to dispose of the wastewater created by thousands of people showering and using the toilet for four days.One lawsuit alleges there was one port-a-potty every 200 yards, which seems like a shitty-low number of units for a festival once planned to attract 40,000 people.
"Upon the arrival of guests to the island of Great Exuma for the first weekend, the island was lacking basic amenities, was covered in dirt, and guests had to sleep in tents with wet blankets," the complaint states. "There were no communal showers or bathrooms as promised; instead there were porta potties (only about one for every 200 yards) that were knocked down and only three showers although there were hundreds of people arriving... Additionally, there were no other basic amenities like soap, sunscreen and shampoo, and no electricity."

I recently flew on Norwegian Airlines to England. It was so no-frills that they actually charge for a cup of water (seriously). Not only was there no meal, there was no nothin'. No pillow, no blankets, no eye-covers, no headphones, no drinks, no snacks, no in-flight magazine
But guess what: it was worth it. Because the flight (from Oakland to Gatwick) was $387 round-trip -- about 1/3 the cost of a "normal" ticket. Hell yeah. I'll bring my own supplies for that price.

What money will they use? Will they just float the costs themselves? How? The make-up event will have major costs but I don't think there's going to be much fresh income to cover those costs.
It's a nice thought -- but I just don't see how this can happen. It seems like another off-the-cuff idea, with no one thinking about practical realities.
The Bahamas government is intervening, promising much stricter vetting of any planned festivals in the future, to protect its own reputation as a destination.

I gotta say, the Metal mass-concerts in the USA and Europe are strictly pay-to-play, pay-to-party. They make $$$, send the fans home happy, and are still ongoing. The fans bring their own camping gear, sometimes their own food and drink (booze) and everyone rocks out and has a good time.

Yeah, you are right, people who PAY for a concert are gonna want things to go right. People who hear "free show" and turn up for that will not be caring so much.... Having watched the movie, I would say 2 things.
1. The crowd started off out of control due to partying and lack of festival infrastructure.
2.If there had been a real stage barricade instead of the bikers' beloved Harleys, things would have been a LOT smoother.

Mr. MWR is technically a Millennial, though he was born RIGHT on the cusp between Gen X and Millennials and leans more toward the cynicism and sarcasm inherent in the former. That suits me fine since I'm a Gen Xer myself.

That's why I withdrew my kids from public school. I saw their peers *becoming* mindless and unquestioning. They didn't start out that way, but something about the current system was making them like that. It was pretty horrifying (and I suspect some "bright" person in the administration who loved Mao and his Red Guard had a lot to do with it).

As some of you know, I'm involved in the live music industry. What you don't know is what goes on behind the scenes with a lot of non-white artists. People like Michael Jackson were notorious for hiring their relatives who had no abilities at all to go on tour as their lighting, set, and video people. To this day, many (certainly not all) shows that are done by non-whites are disorganized, late, and really, really painful to work on.
Ja Rule? Not white. So when you hear "new festival" + not white people organizing it, it's going to be a cluster f**k of unbelievable proportions. And this was.
BTW, putting together a safe, enjoyable festival is really hard work, requires a huge amount of organization and should not be trusted to amateurs. The fact that Millennials fell for this only goes to show how stupid they are.
/if you want to go to a festival, go to something done by Insomniac. Or the Rock In Rio people.

McConnell is the kind of leader who knows how to keep a caucus in line. He did it during the original ACA vote. He did it throughout Trump's cabinet confirmations (allowing only just enough of a peel off so to ensure that the nominations will still get through), and he did it with Gorsuch and holding that spot open throughout 2016.
If he wants it done and it's in the power of the caucus, I think he'll make it happen. The question then becomes: Does he want it done?

That is NOT insurance and this curmudgeon wants folks who don't bother to get insurance and then get cancer to have to sell their assets, cash in retirement etc etc and then medicare can cover their costs if/when they wind up truly broke. Much prefer that to making insurance and healthcare so costly that responsible people cant afford it.

For every O-care "beneficiary" (22% of whom like their policies, according to a survey), there are 3 to 5 other Americans - typically self-sufficient and never uninsured in their lives - who are now either uninsured or financially crippled/drained by staying insured, in the destroyed individual market.
These millions - who may actually outnumber even the number of new Medicaid enrollees, the other magic constituency who don't seem to vote or whose votes have done nothing to halt the Dems' post-O-care national collapse - also of course tend to be high-participation voters. And almost certainly, more Trump voters than otherwise.
What do they get to celebrate today?

It wasn't supposed to rain (because it's August in Austin) but a lot of rain came down. And the place was a mud pit. All of the Dillo Dirt flowed downhill so the mud was about ankle deep by the main stages.
But we can't let that stop the fun. People were slipping and sliding down the hills. Frolicking and flopping about with gaiety and abandon, covering themselves from head to toe in the mud.
A wondrous time was had by all (but not me or the gf because we knew The Truth).
*Dillo Dirt is made from actual dirt and a large portion of treated sewage - toilet paper and poop mainly.

It's not always laziness. Someone who got laid off from their job because of the shitty Obama economy, but couldn't afford single coverage and kept on for a few years, but developed a chronic condition can't really be faulted for not having insurance before hand.
I feel like there should be some sort of charitable recourse that such a person should be able to follow without needing the force of government to help.

I honestly can say I did not know one person like that when I was that age. I grew up in Louisiana so that may be one reason. Drivers learners permit allowed when you were 14.

When we moved back to our Okla home in '94, we ordered several of those tents from Shelter Systems. They look all hip and geodesical and all, but surprise! they're nice tents. (Unsolicited testimonial!)
Not hard to put up. When you did the flooring right and the inner liner, you had a pretty nice hut with four doors (with screens). Light but sturdy. Windproof.
A smaller one worked well for a bathroom tent.
We had a wet snow punch one down, but we just popped it back out. Usually, snow slid off, or we'd poke it from inside and have it slide off.
We did have an 80+mph breeze one day pick up a tent that wasn't properly staked down. It rolled across the yard, over the low wall, and across the pasture to the fence with the neighbor. Lost one or two support poles, but otherwise was intact. We just rolled it back and nailed it back down.
I glimpsed them in a SF series - Stargate? (Never watched it.) Always funny to see "Hey! There's our tents!"
Put in some rugs, hang some Indian bedspreads for color, thick futons, electric -- they could've had a nice, luxurious little camp there for not too much. We did.
...
Picture me, on the ol' 386 laptop, calling CompuServe, via modem, using hardwire phone line strung across the lawn from the tent to the house we were rehabbing ("Wait! Don't mow there until I get the phone line picked up!!"), with flaky rural phone service. Can you say 300 baud? I know you can.

Many members of Congress and their staffs are not the brightest bulbs, but few are stupid enough to not know that "pre-existing condition" as a political issue has no practical force. Election results going on 8 years now cannot be missed, even by those who fail to think or consult survey data.
Therefore the "fear" is likely just a pathetic rationale for their behavior, whose motivation I cannot determine.
MAGA, nice comparison with the "shut-down" myth. The many shut-downs in the last 40 years have never had a discernible impact on the next election, or anything else. Yet Beltway types *pretend* to believe it.
And to anticipate the loving purveyors of "purity" nonsense, many of us are not outraged at today's action. We just understand politics, and policy, and lack a teenage sports fan's approach to either presidents or parties, and therefore recognize the enormous opportunity likely being squandered.
One obvious and easy thing the administration could do to demonstrate some seriousness would be for Price to wield the tremendous power he has to administratively dismantle O-care, starting a month ago. Credibility is earned through action.
