Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Altamont of Stupid: Would-Be Super-Luxe Coachella on the Sea "Organized" by Shit-for-Brains Millennials to Get Other Shit-for-Brains Millennials to Pay up to $2000 to Attend Turns Into, Get This, Epic Level Shit ShowAnd it's prompted three class action lawsuits, several alleging fraud, and one naming damages to the tune of $100 million. The "Fyre Festival" was co-organized by Ja Rule, who I've heard of but I have no earthly idea who he actually is or what he does. I have some vague memory he's involved in rap music. He's not actually a Millennial, because he's like 41 or something. But he seems to be a Millennial in spirit, and in ability. The story about this Festivus-style festival is kinda old -- almost a week old, in fact -- but I'm not hip so I didn't know about it until an hour ago. This is the Most Millennial story I've ever written up. The event was also co-organized by a guy named Billy McFarlane, a true Millennial. This guy started a credit card aimed at Millennials called something really fucking stupid -- Magnises. What the fuck. That's not even close to a word. It sounds like he just took "Magnum condoms" and "penises" and mashed them together. The credit cards are black because Of Course They Are. I guess the idea is "Hey, my black credit card? Means I have a magnum penis. Just like it says on the tin." They paid a lot of models and "influencers" -- idiots with big accounts on Twitter and Instagram -- to promote this "festival," to be located on an island in the Bahamas. These models and influencers were reportedly paid $20,000 each as a minimum, even for the minor, 2nd-rate instagrammers. (Another report says a $10,000 minimum, but several claim $20,000.)He spent $250,000 on a single Instagram post from Kim KardashianThe venue was advertised as being a "private island" once owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar. Their promises to registrants also kept changing over time. Pablo Escobar never owned an island in the Bahamas, and even if he had, the festival was located on an abandoned development site on a public beach near a Sandals resort.I guess "Party on a private island once owned by a notorious narco-terrorist" sounds better than "party on an abandoned development site just a stone's throw from super-exclusive Sandals Bahamas."
The Concierge desk where Pablo Escobar liked to sit back and admire his Empire of Unpainted Wood and Filth The two production professionals became concerned as soon as they came on board. "They had fired a [previous production company], so we took a look at how much had been done -- and there were so many red flags," one said. "Things like water [supply], bathrooms and other everyday structures that should have been in place six months before -- none of that had been done. We all said to them, 'It takes at least eight months to a year to produce a festival, you have to push the date' -- we stressed that and said that over and over. And they were like 'It'll be fine, it's not that big of a deal.' They kept making it seem like we were exaggerating. It was like they didn't care." Even appealing to the young entrepreneurs' reputations among the rich-millennial set they coveted had little effect. "We said, 'What you’ve promised [in statements and advertising promoting the festival] as opposed to what we’re even maybe capable of delivering in this amount of time is not the same. You're going to destroy your brand if you try to have it on this date and don’t deliver what you promised. If you push the date a year, people will be upset. But once you deliver what you promised, they'll get over it.' But it was like they didn't care: They literally kept saying, 'We're gonna be legends.'"CNN reported: Those who shelled out up to $12,780 for the luxury weekend in the Exumas, in the Bahamas, found themselves Thursday treated to mass disorganization, half-built tents, and catered food that was little more than limp cheese sandwiches.I saw another report saying the mattresses weren't even inside the tents, but stacked outside of them. More... Advertising video for the "Fyre Festival," which went totally viral, because Millennials are silly Serious logistical planning for the festival didn’t even begin until late February or early March -- less than two months before the thousands of people McFarland had sold a luxury vacation on a private island were scheduled to arrive. The toilet and shower supplier, who did not get the Fyre Festival contract, told the organizers it would cost north of $1 million just to order the equipment -- a rush-order mark-up he unironically referred to as "disaster pricing." That number did not include the cost of shipping the equipment to the island or the high cost of the barge needed to dispose of the wastewater created by thousands of people showering and using the toilet for four days. One lawsuit alleges there was one port-a-potty every 200 yards, which seems like a shitty-low number of units for a festival once planned to attract 40,000 people. "Upon the arrival of guests to the island of Great Exuma for the first weekend, the island was lacking basic amenities, was covered in dirt, and guests had to sleep in tents with wet blankets," the complaint states. "There were no communal showers or bathrooms as promised; instead there were porta potties (only about one for every 200 yards) that were knocked down and only three showers although there were hundreds of people arriving... Additionally, there were no other basic amenities like soap, sunscreen and shampoo, and no electricity."

Looks like the place where the Poor People live in The Running Man The support from the musical community has been overwhelming and we couldn’t be more humbled or inspired by this experience. People were rooting for us after the worst day we’ve ever had as a company. After speaking with our potential partners, we have decided to add more seasoned event experts to the 2018 Fyre Festival, which will take place at a United States beach venue. All festival goers this year will be refunded in full. We will be working on refunds over the next few days and will be in touch directly with guests with more details. Also, all guests from this year will have free VIP passes to next year’s festival. You're going to both re-fund money you already spent (and in fact ran out of this time) and then also stage another expensive event, this one even more expensive, I assume, because it costs more money to do it right, and you're giving current ticket-holders a free pass to that? What money will they use? Will they just float the costs themselves? How? The make-up event will have major costs but I don't think there's going to be much fresh income to cover those costs. It's a nice thought -- but I just don't see how this can happen. It seems like another off-the-cuff idea, with no one thinking about practical realities. The Bahamas government is intervening, promising much stricter vetting of any planned festivals in the future, to protect its own reputation as a destination. My favorite tidbit from someone who was briefly involved with the planning: they were not paying the bands. They kept pushing off requests from their hired act's managers - or sure, we'll be sending that check soon blah blah blah while openly telling this employee nope, not sending a check anytime soon.
So...they failed on *the* most basic level of a music festival: not paying the musicians as promised. But apparently Kendall Jenner got paid. Priorities!! Posted by: Lizzy at May 04, 2017 02:56 PM (NOIQH) 41

I want to know what the hell is wrong with the island that it's undeveloped in the freaking Bahamas. So far my favorite thing is all of this is the guy who wrote about how he was hired on and he bailed and the last line of this brutal takedown of how incompetent they were was "And baby, they forgot to make me sign an NDA." I do think we're going to learn just when does sheer incompetence tip over into outright fraud. The we'll be legends line has come up in multiple accounts. To me this sounds like a perfect encapsulation of the "disruptive startup" mindset. We can do anything at all if we just leverage tech to annihilate the old ways of doing things! I don't understand. Ja Rule applied the Obama Leadership Paradigm.
1. Give a Speech telling everyone how terrific his plan is. 2. Depend on unqualified people to do whatever it was he promised. 3. Blame the unfolding disaster on someone or something else. 4. Promise the next plan would be super-terrific. And as far as next year's festival, I sure someone else has the money to bring it all off. Posted by: JB1000 at May 04, 2017 03:03 PM (16OL0) 99

I had an in-flight "meal" on Aeroflot that looked like a lump of boiled shit, but I wouldn't serve that thing in the picture to the guys in D block at Soledad. Posted by: J.J. Sefton I recently flew on Norwegian Airlines to England. It was so no-frills that they actually charge for a cup of water (seriously). Not only was there no meal, there was no nothin'. No pillow, no blankets, no eye-covers, no headphones, no drinks, no snacks, no in-flight magazine But guess what: it was worth it. Because the flight (from Oakland to Gatwick) was $387 round-trip -- about 1/3 the cost of a "normal" ticket. Hell yeah. I'll bring my own supplies for that price. The problem seems to have been that the two knuckleheads behind this disaster didn't realize you need 8 months or more to plan, organize, and provide basic infrastructure Nah. I don't believe it'd necessarily take that long to plan properly. The whole Fyre Festival story is one that I keep going back to and enjoying for the sheer Millennial incompetence of it. It boggles the mind.
"We're gonna be legends!" Yeah, but not in the way you think, sparky. I think this was my "favorite" bit of the Vice article: "There was no infrastructure to even support the equipment. They didn't even have a loading dock, they had no understanding of what vehicles were on the island to even move the stuff off the ship once it got there," said the supplier. "They said stuff like, 'Don't worry about customs; it's only for a weekend, you don't have to worry about customs." Because to your average Millennial, you can break the law a little and it's cool. Altamont is held to be a disaster, and rightly so. Using Hell's Angels as security is considered part of the comedy of errors.
But, the "free concert" was the proximate cause. Why? Because people spent the money they would have otherwise spent on tickets on drugs and booze. "Free" tends to bring out another class of folks. Troublemakers. The organizers put the stage at the bottom of a hill, and nearly at ground level. 400,000 people showed up, along with every wack job hanger on in the music scene. Hiring the Hell's Angels might have been one of the few smart things they did, depending on hiw you look at it. Posted by: Common Tater at May 04, 2017 03:32 PM (pQrYJ) 274

Semi-related. What Iearned from watching Archer today:
The death of baller Lynn Koenecke: After being sent home from the road trip, he caught a commercial flight for New York City. During the flight, he drank a quart of whiskey and became very drunk. After harassing other passengers and striking a stewardess, the pilot had to sit on him to restrain him as he was shackled to his seat. He was removed unconscious from the flight in Detroit. After sleeping on a chair in the airport, he chartered a flight to Buffalo. While flying over Canada, he had a disagreement with the pilot and a passenger, and attempted to take control of the aircraft. In order to avoid a crash, he was hit over the head with a fire extinguisher by both the pilot, who had left his controls, and the other passenger.[4][5] After an emergency landing at Long Branch Racetrack in Toronto, it was found that Koenecke had died of a cerebral hemorrhage.[4] The two pilots were charged with manslaughter but were found not guilty in a trial soon after.[ Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Doctor of Thinkology at May 04, 2017 03:34 PM (Nwg0u) Posted by: josephistan at May 04, 2017 03:34 PM (7HtZB) 285

273 Altamont is held to be a disaster, and rightly so.
------- Yeah, you are right, people who PAY for a concert are gonna want things to go right. People who hear "free show" and turn up for that will not be caring so much.... Having watched the movie, I would say 2 things. 1. The crowd started off out of control due to partying and lack of festival infrastructure. 2.If there had been a real stage barricade instead of the bikers' beloved Harleys, things would have been a LOT smoother. So, a bit of a rant here the is probably kind of rayciss.
As some of you know, I'm involved in the live music industry. What you don't know is what goes on behind the scenes with a lot of non-white artists. People like Michael Jackson were notorious for hiring their relatives who had no abilities at all to go on tour as their lighting, set, and video people. To this day, many (certainly not all) shows that are done by non-whites are disorganized, late, and really, really painful to work on. Ja Rule? Not white. So when you hear "new festival" + not white people organizing it, it's going to be a cluster f**k of unbelievable proportions. And this was. BTW, putting together a safe, enjoyable festival is really hard work, requires a huge amount of organization and should not be trusted to amateurs. The fact that Millennials fell for this only goes to show how stupid they are. /if you want to go to a festival, go to something done by Insomniac. Or the Rock In Rio people. As the father of two millennials, this is a funny story. My daughters high school classmates all were of divorces. Some young guy asked my daughter, after meeting my wife, 'So, is your Mom seeing anyone?'
My daughter replied, 'Yeah, my Dad'. Which kind of makes the line from Fight Club about 'a generation of men raised by women' have special meaning. Not that I don't think women can't do it alone. Any less than I think I can singlehandedly climb Mount Everest. It's just the job gets infinitely easier with assistance. Well Soothsayer, that's fantastic. The GOP preserved a non-functioning, stupid part of a wildly dysfunctional, never-popular program. And avoided that awesome political vulnerability of, well, nothing at all, since not a single seat has been lost, or not gained, by pushing for straight repeal, incl. repeal of the so-called pre-existing condition idiocy.
But, magically it seems, because the idiot Dem leadership talks delusionally about it, it's the "third rail of politics!!! eleventy!!!" all of a sudden. Actual electoral holocaust, as has happened to the Dems since they imposed this disaster on the country, is not relevant. Imagined electoral discomfort, based on no election experience or survey data, must guide us. For every O-care "beneficiary" (22% of whom like their policies, according to a survey), there are 3 to 5 other Americans - typically self-sufficient and never uninsured in their lives - who are now either uninsured or financially crippled/drained by staying insured, in the destroyed individual market. These millions - who may actually outnumber even the number of new Medicaid enrollees, the other magic constituency who don't seem to vote or whose votes have done nothing to halt the Dems' post-O-care national collapse - also of course tend to be high-participation voters. And almost certainly, more Trump voters than otherwise. What do they get to celebrate today? Posted by: rhomboid at May 04, 2017 04:20 PM (QX0Xt) 462

Austin City Limits Festival a few years back the parks dept decided it would be a great idea to lay down a thick layer of what they call *"Dillo Dirt".
It wasn't supposed to rain (because it's August in Austin) but a lot of rain came down. And the place was a mud pit. All of the Dillo Dirt flowed downhill so the mud was about ankle deep by the main stages. But we can't let that stop the fun. People were slipping and sliding down the hills. Frolicking and flopping about with gaiety and abandon, covering themselves from head to toe in the mud. A wondrous time was had by all (but not me or the gf because we knew The Truth). *Dillo Dirt is made from actual dirt and a large portion of treated sewage - toilet paper and poop mainly. -- Alex Stivers (@AlexStivers) May 1, 2017 When we moved back to our Okla home in '94, we ordered several of those tents from Shelter Systems. They look all hip and geodesical and all, but surprise! they're nice tents. (Unsolicited testimonial!) Not hard to put up. When you did the flooring right and the inner liner, you had a pretty nice hut with four doors (with screens). Light but sturdy. Windproof. A smaller one worked well for a bathroom tent. We had a wet snow punch one down, but we just popped it back out. Usually, snow slid off, or we'd poke it from inside and have it slide off. We did have an 80+mph breeze one day pick up a tent that wasn't properly staked down. It rolled across the yard, over the low wall, and across the pasture to the fence with the neighbor. Lost one or two support poles, but otherwise was intact. We just rolled it back and nailed it back down. I glimpsed them in a SF series - Stargate? (Never watched it.) Always funny to see "Hey! There's our tents!" Put in some rugs, hang some Indian bedspreads for color, thick futons, electric -- they could've had a nice, luxurious little camp there for not too much. We did. ... Picture me, on the ol' 386 laptop, calling CompuServe, via modem, using hardwire phone line strung across the lawn from the tent to the house we were rehabbing ("Wait! Don't mow there until I get the phone line picked up!!"), with flaky rural phone service. Can you say 300 baud? I know you can. >>"gut" is a strong word, bro
So is "failure' which is tossed around here like a circus midget but there never stopped anyone. I think gut is a lot closer to accurate than failure. There is no more mandate, no more funding, a trillion dollars in taxes go poof.... yea, you pull those legs out of a system that was already well on its way to collapse and the end is nigh. Because most of their clients are idiots.
Posted by: rickb223 at May 04, 2017 04:19 PM (o+pgY) No, because logistics is its own discipline. Putting together large events is mind-bogglingly complex. It takes a certain kind of personality to pull it off with any measure of success. Posted by: troyriser at May 04, 2017 04:25 PM (Fw5cQ) ======== I agree with both statements. A good Event planner makes the client look smart. Looking at a meeting agenda and combing through it from 3 days press event to 2 days after and knowing what questions to ask to avoid surprises is mind numbingly complex. MAGA you are correct, and Sooth I was being sarcastic.
Many members of Congress and their staffs are not the brightest bulbs, but few are stupid enough to not know that "pre-existing condition" as a political issue has no practical force. Election results going on 8 years now cannot be missed, even by those who fail to think or consult survey data. Therefore the "fear" is likely just a pathetic rationale for their behavior, whose motivation I cannot determine. MAGA, nice comparison with the "shut-down" myth. The many shut-downs in the last 40 years have never had a discernible impact on the next election, or anything else. Yet Beltway types *pretend* to believe it. And to anticipate the loving purveyors of "purity" nonsense, many of us are not outraged at today's action. We just understand politics, and policy, and lack a teenage sports fan's approach to either presidents or parties, and therefore recognize the enormous opportunity likely being squandered. One obvious and easy thing the administration could do to demonstrate some seriousness would be for Price to wield the tremendous power he has to administratively dismantle O-care, starting a month ago. Credibility is earned through action. Posted by: rhomboid at May 04, 2017 04:36 PM (QDnY+) 501

I remember tents and porta potties. The USO entertainment was pretty good, too. Food was better than cheese sandwiches once you got the hang of a P38.
All the other stuff, though..... Posted by: Richard Aubrey at May 04, 2017 04:56 PM (W9gUg) 504
Me, I love a multi day concert in a hot tent with minimal facilities, but Fyre sounds worse than any I've been to. But we all want to know, did any losers nail a model? Clearly, that is what they were selling.
Really gross. Worse than Coachella's pretensions. Posted by: Joe Mack at May 04, 2017 05:32 PM (+wjl1) 505
All I have to say is that the Bahamas is an extremely primitive place outside of the truly developed areas. Third-world, FOURTH world, bad. In all my travels, I've only ever had to shower in barely diluted bleach in South Bimini. Posted by: imp at May 04, 2017 05:36 PM (XIXZz) Posted by: The Cockroach at May 04, 2017 05:37 PM (YOIA1) 507
God I rooting for some pirates to show up. That would have put this into the top epic failures of all time. Right there with the Children's Crusade.

Individuality CANNOT BE TOLERATED. We MUST lump in ALL people born of a certain era into one class. We MUST classify people into groups and deny that individuals exist. (Also, using such really cool words like "millennial" is so super-neato!!!)

I have an enormous schadenboner regarding those assholes. They wasted enough to pay off this fucking hospital bill I have no idea how to pay.

These are the folks who think that electricity just happens to come out of the plug in the wall, that water just happens to come out of a faucet, that groceries and merchandise just happens to be in stores. Not a clue to the marvels of engineering and technology that surrounds them - they simply never see it. Hell, they aren't even curious about it.

They visualized a glamorous, rich millennial's neo woodstock and then reality abjectly mugged them.
Now they plan on another to rake in ash to pay off the last and the law suits. It will succeed as the other one did much have even less. next time, No Tents just port-a-potties to sleep in. Posted by: obsidian at May 05, 2017 12:36 PM (ARK2U) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.058 seconds. |
