I think at the time Mary always had a blue robe somewhere. George has a halo and the lady does not. I like this, but my snarky side says the horse is the hero and stomped the dragon to immobilize it so George could go in for the kill. No doubt that is why the horse is really the hero here.

Only when a government official's child was threatened, was any corrective action taken.

Wait, really? Totally believable as allegory, and the last sentence is how politicians work now, so I believe that too.

Posted by: Lance McCormick at May 04, 2017 09:49 AM (u0s1P)

81 The oldest versions of this story say that it was actually a crocodile. George appears to have been a Roman soldier who came across a village in what is now Libya that was cut off from it's water supply by a fierce crocodile, which the villagers were trying to appease by throwing it human sacrifices. (mostly young girls, because hey, arabs then were about the same as arabs now) So George said enough of this, waded into the swamp, and killed the Crocodile. (take notes, Donald)
Later on he resisted the anti-Christian purges of Diocletian, and he got made into a Saint after Diocletian had him executed in some terrible way or another.

When the Byzantine church painted pictures of the saints, they put wings on the crocodile, because it looked a lot cooler that way. And if it can have wings, why can't it breathe fire? Makes kind of a nice little morality play about the devil and all that.

So how did this get to be a symbol of the English Monarchy? Well, the Welsh had taken the Dragon as their national symbol going way back to ancient times (aka Uther PenDragon - all of Arthur's relations were Welsh, which is why his cousin was named Morgan LeFey) SO if you're an English King at war with the Welsh, like Edward III was, and you want to kill off the Welsh Dragon, what better Saint to pick as your own than the Dragon-Slayer St. George?

And that's how St. George's cross got onto the English flag and how a soldier named George who killed a crocodile in Libya became the Patron Saint of England.

Maybe it's a fully-grown adult of a very small breed or species. Given the diversity in dogs (all one species), I could believe that there's a variety of dragon shapes and sizes.

Especially if the Devil had a breeding program and genetics lab.

If anyone is into Arthurian fiction, there was a book many years ago by Catherine Christian called The Pendragon, told from the POV of Bedevere, who was presented as (I think) Arthur's foster-brother of some sort. Bedevere, Arthur and Morgan are childhood friends and the book revolves around their changing relationships to each other.

I haven't read it in years, but it is very enjoyable.

Heh. Along those lines, The Hobbit is kind of interesting. Smaug is *clearly* intelligent, and he's been asleep for a while, so the morality of stealing from him, provoking his anger, and then slaying him is kinda complex.

Yes, he stole the Arkenstone and everything first, and yes, he's a murderer and all. But Gandalf wanted him dead so he couldn't team up with the Necromancer or any other gathering evil, so he basically engineered an assassination while the dragon was sleeping and not currently a threat.

First mention of a dragon is in the Book of Job, Chapter 41. That description of Leviathan plus (probably) the example of a real-live crocodile might serve as inspiration for the dragon legend.

174 I've been trying to dig into Marine LePen and find out what she stands for and believes in. She's pretty socialist, pretty hard left in a lot of ways, but even her worst critics and enemies can't really find anything to attack her for.

I mean, they call her names, like national socialist and fascist, but they cannot give any examples. She's socialist, yes. She's nationalist, yes. But she's not Nazi. She opposes out of control immigration and praises French culture, she loves her nation better than the EU. She has serious problems with lack of assimilation by Muslims, but while her dad was pretty anti-Jew and denied the Holocaust, she threw him out of the party and has never said anything of the sort.

A lot of names are thrown at her, claiming she's antisemetic but nobody has any quotes, evidence, or proof. They just say it a lot.

183 Medieval depictions of dragons were pretty small, but they made up for it by being venomous (their blood was so toxic it dissolved weapons, for instance) and very difficult to harm with normal weapons. 191 A fake poll had Hillary up by like 15, but the oversampling was clear.
Le Pen already faced one vote, and the poll numbers were pretty close to the actual vote.
Even if the previous poll is close (this last snap poll is worse) ... she was still down 18 AFTER her surge.

It is possible their establishment manufactured the "Macron won the debate handily" false narrative like our MFM did for Hillary. That still leaves Le Pen down say 12 (if she gained 6 in reality), and needing major turnout while those that did not vote Macron the first round stay home or become patriots and vote Le Pen.

I had confidence Trump would win, I pray Le Pen will win.

Lol. I used to not mind taking care of son's dog when he had to go out of town. Now that Spanky, the Enforcer Cat, is gone, the dog thinks she rules the place. The other kitty hides under our bed, and I'm constantly running the dog off the good furniture.

Spanky used to keep the dog confined to one area of the family room. She had dog herding instincts.

340 Beowulf's story is really tragic. Somebody really needs to rewrite the Schoolhouse Rock song "Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla" which was all about pronouns and how they keep all those proper nouns from "wearing you down" with constant repetition. An updated version would probably conclude just the opposite -- it's easier to just keep repeating Rufus Xavier Sarsparilla's name over and over again because keeping all the fifty jillion gender fluid pronouns straight is what really wears you down....

346 340 Beowulf's story is really tragic. He deposes a tyrant by killing a monster and saving a land, but gets seduced by the monster's mother, and becomes a tyrant, eventually fighting his son by that mother and dying in the process to save the kingdom. Its kind of a grim examination of human nature and power.

The seduction is actually not explicit, but potentially implied in the text based on interpretation.

The animated film makes it explicit.

352 Somebody really needs to rewrite the Schoolhouse
Rock song "Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla" which was all about pronouns and
how they keep all those proper nouns from "wearing you down" with
constant repetition. An updated version would probably conclude just the
opposite -- it's easier to just keep repeating Rufus Xavier
Sarsparilla's name over and over again because keeping all the fifty
jillion gender fluid pronouns straight is what really wears you down....

353 So if I'm understanding the House deliberation at the moment, they're debating HR 2192, an amendment to the AHCA, which would eliminate Congress' exemptions from ACA and/or AHCA.

Am I reading this right?

362 I've read two translations. A no-name first, and I found it a slog.

The second was the Seamus Heaney translation, and it made the poem feel so alive. I absolutely loved it.

That's kind of a thing I have about translations generally-- languages aren't simple-substitution ciphers. So the translator's name should be more prominent IMO. I assume there are "standard" translations of, say, Jules Verne's works, but who's to say someone else shouldn't make another attempt?

I don't understand what your comment is I don't expect everybody to have the same plan and I would think that a person in the Christian ministry would NOT say, "Have a plan to save every person you meet" because we don't save. Jesus does and if we start thinking we're the ones that do the saving--that's spiritual pride.

Nigel Farage endorsed Le Pen

Le Pen is really, really working the French Left hard. She might get 15% of that vote, with a lot of the remainder either voting "none of the above" or not showing up. The more abstentions by the French electorate, the better the chance for a Le Pen victory.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Denis Thatcher. After the SAS raid on the Iranian Embassy in 1980, the Thatchers met the SAS raid team at Hereford and had beers with them at the team pub. Denis proceeded to lecture the SAS and let them know in no uncertain terms that he was profoundly disappointed in them.

Because they left one of the terrorists alive.
