CBD- you might want to try German Deli, as they have a variety of German coffees (Dallmyar and Jakob are our favorites, but they also carry Tchibo and Illy) and their service is outstanding. They were created by some military guys who missed the German foods they enjoyed while stationed there, so they are very pro military and veteran. Based in Plano, too.

Caught an adolescent skunk in a live trap this morning. Almost impossible to release them without getting sprayed, unfortunately,
But this one was cute, and pretty calm, so removed a slat from the fence the trap was against, reached through and managed to release the door, got it up with the hook on a crowbar, and then dropped a noose down, and tied it off to hold the door open. Eventually, it wandered out and away. Spent the day welding up a pig trap. A small sounder has moved in, and we need to get them before the 4 become 20+. These will become BBQ, bacon, ham, and pigstrami. Posted by: Duncanthrax at April 29, 2017 10:10 PM (DMUuz) 49

At one time we had essentially a mouse ranch. Long story involving tame male and female mice in sex segregated cages and the house sitter mixing them up accidentally. When we returned from vacation we were the shocked parents of some 200+ baby mice.
Towards the end we had a female mouse that literally was a soft warm golden color. Absolutely stunning. Her name was Spook because well she was spooked by everything. Unfortunately, one of our cats snuck back in the house and laid on Spook's cage. We she died of a heart attack because she was clutching her chest when found. Mortimer,
Cold brew is the way to go for less acidic coffee. Pretty simple too. 1 cup of coarse ground beans to 4 cup cold water. Steep together for 24-36 hours. Strain. Enjoy. I like it cold but if you like it hot you can warm it in the microwave. You can drink as is or dilute with water if it's too strong. It will keep for a month or more in the fridge with no degradation of flavor. Posted by: lindarose at April 29, 2017 10:42 PM (kufk0) 155

True Confession:
I was at church today (traditional-ish Catholic with an organist) and there was a young woman sitting in the pew behind me. The place was not crowded, but a good turn out for a Saturday. When she began to sing, she made my teeth hurt. She sang louder than the organist, and louder than everyone else. It was like she was auditioning for American Idol. I don't know if she was slightly out of tune or what, but every time she sang it was overbearing, loud and very audition-like. The new organist has increased the singing, so she annoyed and distracted me through the entire mass. Consistently. I've never seen her at this mass before, and if I run into her again, I'm going to sit somewhere else. Totally ruined the service for me. /I feel bad for not getting beyond that... but there you go. I'm awful. Posted by: shibumi at April 29, 2017 10:53 PM (8zWAk) 177

Speaking of strange automotive electronic mysteries, I tried playing that little Satechi Aux audio player in my 2008 Suburban on Thursday. It plays over the FM, but the volume level is way too low. I had to have the volume control on the radio cranked to the max to be able to listen at all. Doesn't seem to be a signal strength issue, though, because the typical interstation hiss of the FM receiver is fully quieted.

I make sauerkraut in quart jars and add garlic and jalapeno. This year I used my garden jalapeno, and I have been using dried peppers too
I am not sure if I like the regular or red cabbage better. You can tell when the fermentation is taking hold with the red cabbage because there is a color change, but it will stain. I need to make more of that, it is very tasty. I will use it, fried, in sandwiches, I will use it when I make a pot roast, and I will eat it straight. I may try cutting the tops off of the volunteer garlic in the garden, a Korean lady tells me that is used for a form of kimchi. Posted by: Kindltot at April 29, 2017 11:03 PM (T+ln4) 197

Ego te absolvo-- the organist at my church insists on using the sappy sentimental hymnody of the 1980s-- variously called "hum-and-strum" or "sitcom theme song" by some of my friends. Two millennia of wonderful church music in a range of different styles, from plainsong to sixteenth-century chorales to the Anglo-American tradition, and this dude clings to stuff that is already dated musically as well as having spiritually vacuous touchy-feely words. I grit my teeth and sit through it as penance for getting so irritated by it-- so I understand just how you feel about an obnoxious singer in the congregation. Thanks for reading my rant! at the Lutheran church I grew up in (I was confirmed there in 1981), they have what must literally be one of the largest, most complete, complex and ornate pipe organ systems in the entire USA.
I grew up in Lancaster, PA, which has a number of churches with excellent organs. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was founded in 1730 and has an organ that was first built in 1744 and expanded many times since. I used to love to go to American Guild of Organists (AGO) festivals in that church when I was in high school. I studied to be an organist but knew I'm too short to ever consider a concert career (you need to be at least 5' 6" and have long fingers that can span more than an octave). Don't know where you're presently located, but if you come East, the organ in the West Point Chapel is presently the largest church organ in the world. "Why do so many Americans think Democrats are out of touch?"
A: Things like this: Chris Bray: "Bonnie Tsui has spoken to an issue of deep importance, and I feel that we must put a stop to the cultural genocide that we so casually call "lunch." Recently, I was served a "hamburger" at a restaurant with counter service, and I inquired of the staff to determine which person in the kitchen was deeply immersed in the native culture of Hamburg. Upon learning that no one in the kitchen even reflected the presence of any German culture at all, I simply wept at the cultural assault I had witnessed. And then they had the audacity to ask if I still wanted the so-called "French" fries, which, I assure you, were in no true sense Gallic. We must not surrender in this fight. Nothing has ever been more important."....... Speaking of assault, it's now insensitive to wear an Indian headdress with war paint or Geisha-paint your face for Halloween...yet it's heroic and "woke" to put on a black mask so you can go anonymously beat down people for disagreeing with you? Posted by: JTB at April 30, 2017 12:40 AM (V+03K) My mother's oven just broke. Only 3 years old. The thing won't bake anymore. The problem is simple - the internal program running the thermostat is screwed up. The oven will correctly read the temperature and heat up to the set temp but once it gets there it won't let the thermometer reading change and, so, the oven element just turns off and never turns back on. BUT, if you just clear it and set it to bake at a new temperature it resets the thermostat (correctly) and heats it back up to that temperature ... then shuts off, etc. Anyway, it's clearly an easy fix but it probably requires replacing some $3 circuit board that I don't have access to. And this sort of stuff should not have happened in 3 years. Anyway, on the bright side, she called up Home Depot (where it was bought) and they said it had a 10 year warranty. So, it should be getting fixed free ... which is nice, but an oven shouldn't have any problems, at all, for the first 15 years, at least. They said that the warranty used to be 30 years but Maytag just cut it down to 10. Oh well. Not the best but good enough for the modern world, I guess. And I hate "smart" appliances not for any of the reasons in the article but just because the whole idea is totally retarded and I don't trust most of the companies making these things (nor Comcast who does my internet and snoops on it through their router, which I know because that fucking company actually put service alerts (to replace their shitty router) on a friggin WEB PAGE). Can you believe that? Comcast inserted their own maintenance alert to me through a pop-up on a web page I was surfing through (that had nothing to do with comcast). That shit's beyond creepy. It's good usable stuff, dammit!
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 30, 2017 12:37 AM (OdK9v) Right! And if it's not usable, it can be fixed. Friday, I found a Makita portable miter saw at the dump. Nice carbide blade and all. It had been dropped, and the pedestal at the rear that supports the hinge and balance spring for the motor had busted. Cast iron. I vee'd out the cracks with my grinder, and jigged it up, and heated it thoroughly with the biggest tip in my welding outfit, and then heated the joints cherry red and fed in coated brazing rod. Got all the cracks brazed up, and let it cool, and figured I ought to reinforce things a bit, so I basically wrapped the repaired area in sheet steel (about as thick as I can cut with snips), and welded the seams, and drilled and tapped holes to bolt this "sock" onto the parent metal. Hope it will take a little stress off the brazed joints. Got it all back together, and it zipped through a hunk of 2X6 like it wasn't there. One of the little black Bakelite caps for the motor brushes is missing, but the Makita dealer should have that. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 30, 2017 12:59 AM (0deF2) 432

410 About 'dumb' appliances. Does anyone make a new non-digital, non-computer stove (gas, not electric) or fridge? You know, ones that can be repaired. The ones my grandparents and parents had lasted for at least two decades, maybe longer.
--------- Good question. The old school refrigerators were excellent. Don't believe the BS about them being energy hogs. They use less juice, and are very quiet. I know an elderly couple who received a Philco refrigerator in 1948 as a wedding present and they still use it, not as a main kitchen appliance, but for sodas and beer in the basement. They do need to be defrosted once in a while. A cow orker bought an "energy star" compliant electric clothes dryer, and boy was she pissed. Took like three hours to dry a full load. But it uses a third less electicity per hour, ha ha. Hang on to the old Whirlpool and Maytag stuff if you can. The big problem is people want to update for the latest appearance or fads. The latest dishwashers are just crap as near as I can tell. And the washers. And the stoves... Notice a trend here? Posted by: Common Tater at April 30, 2017 01:22 AM (9razJ) 465

Oh, only a quick drive-by, as shotgun fun match calls early in the AM.
For military brass, removing the primer crimp is no big deal. Many of the brass prep tools (primer pocket uniformer, etc.) will do it - just a twist or two, and only one time, of course. I've got a multi-tool (forget the brand, big name) that comes with changeable tool ends on a light aluminum handle, doing military 30-06 brass has been easy. This has been HXP (Greek surplus). "Stab" crimps (a few little dots around the pocket where brass was pressed to deform and hold the primer in). Ring-crimps might be a bit tougher, dunno. That's rifle brass. For pistol, where you'll find crimps in some 9mm, it's even easier. Recycle. Semi-auto pistol brass is too plentiful/cheap to bother with removing crimps. Miley: I haven't had a pig in a blanket for 20 years.
Mentioned to Milady that is was PIAB day the other day (the kind of info only the AoSHQ can guarantee). Danged if Milady didn't whomp up some from-scratch batter and wrap a couple links in tasty pastry, with a blueberry-chipotle dipping sauce. Yowza. Being married to a master artisan has its benefits. Of course, the recipe needs refinement, and I'm so happy to volunteer to help test the experiments..... Secretly, I hope it never happens and I must endure the heat, the smell of hippies and sleeping in a hot tent at Bonnaroo. But I do think suffering from normal life in real time is important. Posted by: Joe Mack at May 02, 2017 07:53 PM (Pby3z) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0695 seconds. |
