Is O'Reilly Out? Drudge Tweet Seems to Speak of His Show in Past Tense

Another woman has come forward to accuse Bill O'Reilly of sexual harassment.

Though, honestly, this seems to be a pretty weak kind of sexual harassment.

I'd earlier said that if what was claimed of Roger Ailes -- that he linked job advancement to having sex with older, powerful, married men -- then that would be textbook sexual harassment.

In this case, it seems more like O'Reilly was just hitting on her. Okay, not "just" hitting on her -- hitting on her in the guise of wanting to talk about her career (according to the woman complaining, Wendy Walsh).

But very few people ever say "Come up to my room and then we'll have sex." It's almost always put in the guise of "Come up to my room and we'll do this other thing which is completely innocent."

Everybody knows this. Wendy Walsh, the complaining woman here, knew it right away. O'Reilly was hitting on her.

But...

I'm not sure if there should be a rule against men with money and power just hitting on women. For one thing, you don't become a monk just because you make it.

For another thing, women often seem to dig men with money and power.

It also seems like O'Reilly did not "retaliate" against this woman. She did not get the coveted Fox News Contributor status she coveted -- but then, 90% of the people you see on Fox News covet that paid status, but never get it. The Fox News Contributor thing is one of the most chased-after prizes in media -- and far more chased than caught.

But he kept having her on his show after the turn-down, and advertised her book a fair amount.

Is that "retaliation"?

She says O'Reilly "promised" to "help" her get that coveted slot.

How does she know he didn't?

"Help" doesn't get you a gig that every woman (and dude) loosely affiliated with the conservative movement is chasing. They're not handing these out like tampons in a male bathroom, after all.

According to Walsh, 54, O'Reilly dropped her as a regular guest on his show and reneged on a promise to help her secure a paying position as a Fox News commentator after she turned down his invitation to visit his hotel suite during a dinner meeting in Los Angeles in February 2013.

Eh, I kinda don't like O'Reilly but this seems like very thin gruel -- especially thin gruel for a dismissal.

This woman seems fairly credible to me. I'm really not calling bullshit on her story -- I'm questioning whether or not this story amounts to anything actionable or particularly terrible.

(Eh, on second thought, if her story is true, then it's somewhat terrible. To even mix "coming up to my room" with a business dinner which is conducted for business and career-advancement reasons is... problematic, as the kids say. It would put this woman in a "no-win situation," as she says. Still, without any of this being overt, and without any real retaliation, I can't say this is anything more than a guy hitting on a woman, getting turned down, and then... not really doing anything about it. I don't think you can make this illegal.)

I know a lot of people who've hooked up on the job. Not all of these people were exactly equal on the corporate hierarchy when these hook-ups occurred. Some later got married.

Is this now all illegal?

There's been chatter that the Murdochs are turning against O'Reilly. This Drudge tweet suggests he's hearing something:

Comment Blather: Is O'Reilly's problem here that he's taking the typical ingratiation that all job applicants offer for some kind of "Dude, she's totally into me" signal?

"Bill O'Reilly used to leer at an African-American Fox News clerical worker and called her 'hot chocolate,' according to attorney Lisa Bloom, who helped the woman report the harassment to the network's hotline."

"Bloom says she spoke with three witnesses who knew the woman at the time and confirmed she was upset and stressed at the end of each workday. 'She's not asking for any money,' says Bloom. 'She just wants them to know her story.'"

145 The bar for "sexual harassment" has simply become too easy to meet.
If a woman wants to take you out, she can. That's unfortunately the new rules.
--

I think that's the case if you're a very attractive, high profile woman at a large company.

On a local level, if men don't want you in their workplace, the bosses-- who are men-- will side with the guys no matter what and insist that you're doing something to antagonize the guy harassing you. Basically if you, as a female in a male dominated workplace, make waves, well, you'll be out of a job and blackballed in the industry.

Also.. the circumstances that the woman is using here can also be used against her- most of these things happen between two people with no witnesses. And if you're in a smaller company with a male boss and the man/men harassing you have more seniority, you're screwed. Male bosses generally believe men, not women in these cases. And don't even bother going to a lawyer unless you have videotape -- preferably more than one-- of it happening, as well as numerous witnesses who are willing to testify against their bosses and co-workers.

...

Julia Roberts explained this 30 years ago.

There was a lot of tabloid chatter about all the co-stars in movies she wound up having relationships with. They goofed on her for it.

She said something like, "What do you want, it's where I work. I don't work in a pet store. I work on movies. Where else am I going to meet people?"

I thought that was a pretty good point (and one of the few things I've liked about her).

The fact is, most people meet people at work. Or, at university.

It's where you spend almost all of your time out of the house.

The other places you could meet people are at church or church functions and in whatever clubs you belong to.

But you're gonna meet people at work much more than in those other places, because there are more people there, and you spend much more time there.

I don't see O'Reilly out at night hitting the clubs.

She was a terrible bar tender anyway so I did and never felt too badly about it--it was kind of a relief. ----

I'd agree. If it's high profile enough.

I've seen it happen: management takes the side of the man (who may have more seniority and is therefore protected by the company) and vilifies the female. The man is a bully, and the co-workers are afraid of him, so they don't stand up to him. Ever. And they blame the woman. "She was asking for it; she knew he had a temper and didn't like working with women."

What is the woman left with? No job, no reference, not enough evidence for a court case.

The above statement probably has nothing to do with the O'Reilly thing, but it's another view on how sexual harassment cases can go down.

207 here's one angle:

Some guys are good at picking up on The Signal, other guys aren't. Some guys think every woman is giving them The Signal.

Context matters. She's meeting him about WORK. He's a higher-ranking guy in the company she wants to join. He's her "in."

Now, over dinner, if she's laughing at his every joke and complimenting him, how should he take that?

He should take that a person on a job interview just flattering the guy interviewing her -- and not as suggestive of any amorous interest.

If he just met this woman at an industry party, and she didn't want anything from him, he could take the pretending-to-find-him-funny thing and compliments in a different way.

But in this situation, he should definitely assume against the idea that she wants It.

You know, just because a stripper is nice to you and says you're good looking doesn't mean she's really into you. It's part of her job duties to be ingratiating to customers.

And O'Reilly should not have assumed he had some kind of in with this woman unless she made the first (non-ambiguous) move.

And yeah, women know how to be pretty clear about such intentions.

And O'Reilly may very not be an "out of control hound". He's filthy rich and extremely well known, not to mention very unpopular in certain quarters, which makes him a prime target, whether he did anything "inappropriate" or not. More likely not, until you can come up with the gun camera film that proves otherwise, especially in today's guilty-until-proven-innocent climate.

The problem here is it is being viewed by some like it's a violation of the law, which I don't think it is.

There is little doubt women use sexuality to enhance their position no different than men using money or power to enhance their standing with a woman.

The more desirable the woman, the more she can bargain for. I know some that are willing to barter for a hydrocodone, 3 cheese Krystal's and a couple of Grape Smirnoff Ices. At least they have the wherewithal to hold up their end of the bargain.

The ones where you do not discuss the kinds of things that can happen on the Howard Stern show.

Or call female coworkers hot chocolate, for that matter.

Seriously, where do you work that discussing things at Howard Stern levels of tacky would NOT be frowned upon?

I am among the ones on the ONT who get warned occasionally for crossing the line, but I would NEVER talk like that at work.

Syndicated on various local TV stations, with no fixed time slot, Limbaugh could not control when it would be broadcast. It varied from just after prime time to just before sunrise, depending upon the station. This was before Fox News came on the scene, and had he a fixed time slot, I think he would have excelled.

On the other hand, would the radio program have suffered? There is such a thing as biting off more than you can chew, see Bill O'Reilly's radio show. Yes, he really had one for a while.

434 Tesla makes some cool looking cars and I'd love for them to work as advertised, rather than burst into flames and run out of power halfway to the market. They have cool concepts and ideas plugged into the car, even if some of them are just gadgets for the sake of gadgets. Some of their car designs even look really good.

My problem with Tesla isn't their product or their goals, its their methods. Telsa exists solely by sucking taxpayer money into their company. That's fine if you're a monarchy where the king owns everything and funds new projects. Its not when you're a democracy and the people are supposed to be in charge.

Not to mention he has a offered a book (one in a long series of publications he cranks out at breakneck speed and incessantly merchandises) about Ronald Reagan that asserted his mental faculties to have been signficantly affected by the assassination attempt. Despite the fact that there were Reagan cabinet members he could have interviewed who would have disputed his theory, he refused to give them a hearing. Unfortunately teenage men are wising up and refusing to engage with women. I'm not alone. Millions have been destroyed just for being a man and giving a woman the bad feelz.

Today this is the reality for men. We have everything working against us from resources, to laws, to society, and culture.

The only way this reverses itself is if women make the terrible behaviors and actions of most other women unacceptable and/or men don't pay women any time of the day except for sex in exchange on our terms.

Sucks but this is reality like a woman should not enter a prison full of men wearing a miniskirt and no panties unsupervised.
