For those of us who like the paintings of Edward Hopper, Lawrence Block has edited an anthology of short stories based on 18 of Hopper's works. The title is: "In Sunlight or In Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper".
It's available for today only as a Kindle book for 1.99. I believe the price goes back up tomorrow. The reviews of the concept and the stories are very positive. I haven't had a chance to start reading the stories yet but for 1.99, I would be happy with eighteen of Hopper's paintings. Just FYI. Now back to my usual art work ramblings. This is problematic because I can't tell what kind of fish they are. Their heft and the way they lie is very naturalistic, but he leaves out the details that would key one in on the species.
Also, it bothered me that it's about cleaning fish and we don't see where the offal goes. Cleaning usually just means gutting. You're not filleting the fish, just getting the entrails out. So I've decided that the culling board there is portable, that we're in an estuary, and they're cleaning the fish at low tide. Guts go in the sand, tide comes in, crabs get to eat. That would make it salt water which would justify my designation of the fish as cod. I can't quite make out the architecture to be Maine or a Maritime province, but I can't rule them out either. That idiot Brown lived in Brooklyn, but this isn't Brooklyn. Also there are no cod in Brooklyn. They could be cod by the shape of the head and the size and the fact that there is an abundance to be cleaned. You don't see the barbel under the chin, though, or the mottled coloration, or the shape and number of fins. Also, the tails are an absolute disaster no matter what the species. The Discovery Channel will be airing a new documentary, "The Sacred Cod", on April 13. I expect you all to watch it. It will be on the mid-term. I enjoy Brown's paintings for the subject matter and his technique. This one resonates with anyone who has cleaned a mess of fish at the shore (best place to do it) although this painting is a romanticized version. Where are the flies and gulls? As usual, Brown makes effective use of color. In this case with the soft, not bright, colors of the wood table and buildings and the every day clothing of the men. The only bright areas are on the freshly caught fish and the bit of water showing in the background. The rest have the worn look resulting from weather and water at the shore.
I like the slight smile on the man on the left. In fact none of the three look like this is a nasty chore. This image is part of the act of fishing, a chance to chat with friends, and the promise of some good eating. It is a very pleasant scene. BTW, look at an enlarged view. The men, table and fish are quite distinct and stand out from the soft, almost sketched, buildings and shoreline in the background. That helps focus the viewer's eye while retaining the effect of the overall scene. Posted by: JTB at April 10, 2017 10:04 AM (V+03K) 119

I have settled in a Church that I personally have some doctrinal differences with, but their practical Christian application is very good, in my estimation.
So what I do is participate in this Body, and keep my doctrinal views generally to myself. I have learned that my breathless opining about the nuances of Christianity to anyone who is willing, or worse, unwilling to listen, is not really helpful. If you are receiving it under any other circumstances, then your soul is in peril. I don't think it's for anyone on this planet to decide what anyone else's conscience dictates. The only time a person should be denied communion is when there is a clear indication that the person is receiving it under false pretenses (John Kerry, I'm looking at you). I've never seen the theatrical version, but I have seen the expanded one (it's not a director's cut since David Fincher has disowned the movie...it might be a producer's cut), and it comes *this close* to working until about halfway through when it gives up and starts having the alien run around at people in hallways. Funny how the projections for legal pot and casinos are all stupendous and then when they are realized....we hear nothing.
============= Wait, so stoners and dumb people aren't rich? Of course, every single state that passed the lotto has education coffers that are flush full, right? Lookth increathible. It must've physically hurt someone at Marvel to wait this long to use Immigrant Song for a Thor movie. The lyrics to too, too perfect. Also, the trailer in general looks like it's from 1981, in the same way the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer looks like it's from 1977. Posted by: Ian S. at April 10, 2017 10:52 AM (3J/LN) 271
I remember watching a Real Housewives of Somewhere show years ago and one Wife was trying to teach another how to cook a chicken. She said the first thing you do is wash the chicken and the second one proceeded to use dish soap to wash it. The first one was flabbergasted that the second used actual soap. It was pretty funny.

Brewing beer on the scale of Budweiser, et al is just process manufacturing - not unlike chemical plants. Everything is computerized, the formula is fixed, no variations - in the recipe, taste, etc. Craft brewers are more like artists (in my mind). Smaller batches, not afraid to experiment, play with the recipe by using different strains of yeast, hops, grains, adjuncts, etc. I'll take craft over mass produced any day of the week. Also let me be more attention whoring than usual.
Here is how my day has gone. I had to go to the courthouse and then to make a deposit at the bank for an office thing. No big deal, I can go to the courthouse then up to the bank and be back in like 30-35 minutes. I go to the courthouse, loop a couple of times, can't find parking, no big, I'll park in the garage, it's a buck and I have some ones. I had to park a few levels up and had to walk down the scary staircase of doom and promptly slipped down the last three steps. Yay. Also ow. Filed the stuff, got back to the car, opened my purse to get the dollar out of my wallet annnnnddd no wallet. I don't carry that big a purse so it took a minute to determine, yup, no wallet. Which meant no money to get out and, more importantly, no money for lunch. I scrounged around and managed to cobble together a dollar in change to get out. Yay. Also now I have to run back home because I was a bit freaking out that maybe the wallet wasn't at home. Got home and there was my wallet on the kitchen counter because idefk I'm stupid. Yay Drove back down to the bank to put the deposit in which is very important because it's payroll. Annnnndd I was at the wrong bank. Yay. So all told my 30-35 minute trip turned into like a hour or so trip. Did I mention walking into work to the lovely scent of dead mouse? In what is entirely related news, there's now a dozen assorted Krispy Kreme donuts at work. Okay. There's nine assorted Krispy Kreme donuts now. CO-WORKER ATE ONE OKAY? Being a homebrewer myself, I cringed when I saw this.
Well, I would say Sam Calagione is really into "process manufacturing" too, as are Jim Koch, Ken Grossman, and pretty much any other crafty-type out there. Fact is, when offering a product for sale like that, consistency is a big part of the game. My issue is when the consistency factor is derided or just tossed overboard. I mean, when you get right down to it, beer is a chemical anyway, and it does make sense to know the process so thoroughly that a consistently good product can be turned out, week after week and year after year. When I drink a Burton Baton today, I have high confidence that it's going to taste close to what it did when I had my first one a few years ago. And that doesn't bar experimentation at all - heck Brett Joyce built Rogue out of it. Even AB is pushing the envelope more than it has. Point being, process is one thing, but the end result is the product - AB has certainly done a good job at making a difficult beer (ever try to brew a clean lager? It's tough) in volume. They deserve credit for that. Posted by: VA GOP Sucks at April 10, 2017 11:30 AM (eytER) 459

@458. There is a difference. A couple of examples - on St Croix there is a Cruzan Rum distillery, and a Diageo facility (I used two different words there) that produces Captain Morgan.
They are both "process" products. But take a tour of both plants, and one is clearly an industrial facility - Diageo looks like a cleaner version of an oil refinery (which does distillation, too). There is a refinery nearby, the similarity is striking. A bunch of shiny stainless steel tanks and piping. When you tour, you cannot see any of the "process" - it is all mechanized and sealed. At the Cruzan distillery, even though Jim Beam purchased them, it still looks like a family run business. You can see trucks will molasses pull up and dump into the tanks - you can physically touch and taste it. You can also go by the mash tanks and see and smell the fermentation. A similar thing could be seen between Old Dominion when it was its own regional craft beer, and now that it is manufactured by AB in Delaware. The brewery in Ashburn had plenty of large process vessels, but it was clearly people running it. You cannot tour the facility in Delaware. Posted by: blaster at April 10, 2017 11:39 AM (tewYv) 486

It has Jean Smart, who is one of my favorite actresses because she played Charlene on Designing Women, and was a hoot. But the show is interesting. If you like foreign stuff, Hotel Beau Sejour is a different take on a ghost story/murder mystery. It makes me a little uncomfortable, because the characters look like they smell bad, between the drink, the cigarettes and the apparent aversion to bathing. But the story is intriguing. On our return flight from Rome years ago, we watched our bags being loaded together on the Delta flight to NYC. Upon arriving in ATL, imagine my "surprise" that my bag didn't make it. Delta delivered it the next day, with the lock broken off and a CD missing. I had bought it from a musician on the street in San Gimignano. Do I trust baggage handlers? NO.
Well, you can tour AB. You're now getting into contract brewing, which is a different thing. Now I've been to OD many times, in fact I still have the growler. Anyway, in the case of OD, the real estate started going up, OD's sales weren't supporting their location, so they elected to leave the regional brewpub/local sales model. AB had capacity to brew on contract (and it's not a rare thing, especially in the craft world where a small outfit may not be able to afford the capital outlay to build a brewery), so they struck their deal. And since we're talking distilleries, Maker's Mark is one that gets a rep from being all hometown and everything, even offers a marketing-based tour for the tourists - but behind the scenes, they are process oriented just like everyone else. In fact, they got a lot of mileage from the show they put on in the front of the house vs what they actually do to make their bourbons. They even have a mash tun in the first part of the tour, and they invite you to dip your hand in there and taste. All for show. Point being, making a good product consistently and in volume requires skill that is too often derided. I hate flying. AtC - At least you didn't lock your key in the car. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 10, 2017 11:34 AM (ZO497) I thought of that when I got to my apartment and made sure I had keys in hand before I closed the car door. Also I nearly left the windows down and phone and purse in the car while I ran into the apartment but then I remembered that there was a sign up by the mail boxes on Friday saying make sure not to leave anything in your car because there's been a rash of vehicle break ins due to increased drug related criminal activity spilling down from a neighboring area. This is alarming because I live in a quiet part of a quiet town and there are multiple police officers who live in the complex since the management group does the whole free rent for a cop so long as you can park your cruiser in the lot when not at work. So I took my stuff with me. Posted by: alexthechick - most delicatest flowerest of innocent virtuest at April 10, 2017 11:49 AM (mf5HN) 514

Don't get it. Know some airline folks and they travel space-available on their airline (or partners) - no possibility of bumping someone for a non-revenue passenger like them. Friend always is offering us free tix to nice places, so far have only taken him up once, to go to DC to tidy up some business, years ago.
He and his wife (both with the airline) go through considerable strategerizing to make sure they can travel when they want, when they're doing a free pass trip - so I'm pretty sure they cannot bump paying passengers, ever. Posted by: rhomboid at April 10, 2017 11:51 AM (PjWy4) 516

So many people (and Drudge, but perhaps that's just predictable low-info trolling) pretending to believe that "war!!!" with Russia is somehow feasible or likely. Still waiting to hear how, where, and with what systems such a war would be fought, how either side would know when it's achieved its objectives, or what those objectives would be. May be a reason one never hears even a syllable of any of that - there's no there, there.
As for "war!" with Iran - um, well, if you've just arrived on the planet, that war started in 1979. One-sided almost the entire time. And the last administration just s-canned a non-military containment and degradation strategy that took years to construct, and which was fairly effective. Hard for Tehran to "threaten" war when they've been at war with us since Carter was prez. Posted by: rhomboid at April 10, 2017 11:58 AM (PjWy4) 533
