Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Shock: Days After ESPN Releases New Guidelines on Political Statements From Employees, They Bounce Conservative-Leaning Host In Favor of Liberal-Leaning HostSage Steele, whose name was really built for either a porn star or a sexy elite assassin employed by Lex Luthor, was one of the few conservative-tilting people at ESPN. She's complained that #Resistance "protesters" caused her to miss a flight, and that black people were "hypocritical" on racism, and that some of the worst racism she's encountered has come from blacks. (She's black herself.) A few days ago ESPN issued new guidelines on what was permissible commentary on political issues from ESPN hosts on "public-facing media" (that is, any public statement, on Twitter, FaceBook, what have you). They said they wanted their "hard news" people to refrain from such commentary unless it was sports-related. On the other hand, they encouraged non-hard-news people to connect sports with politics. "People are talking about politics in a different way now," the directive said, by which they meant the leftwing is now politicizing everything, and then concluded that ESPN must embrace this "new way" of injecting leftist politics into everything. By the way, I have no idea what "hard news" is in the contest of sports coverage. It's a field consisting primarily of inventing awesome catchphrases like "Booyah!" and "Off the schneid." Well, now Sage Steele is out of her job. Leftwingers only thing conservative statements are "political;" their own claims are just the Holy Truths of #Science. Ergo, the first person to be purged is Sage Steele, though they claim she's still "very much employed" by ESPN.She's just not hosting the show she used to host. She'll be part of ESPN's "Sports Center On the Road Initiative," and if that's what it sounds like, all I can say is, Everyone loves being kicked out of a gig where they show up at the same place every day in order to be put on a bus and travel around the country. People love traveling every day of their working lives. Outkick the Coverage discusses this: The next day [after issuing the new guidelines encouraging employees to talk about the politics in the guise of sports] MSESPN did what MSESPN does -- it replaced a prominent conservative voice, Sage Steele, with a prominent liberal voice, Michelle Beadle. You'll recall that Beadle has spent much of the past several months on Twitter denigrating Donald Trump and those who voted for him. If Beadle had Tweeted the same things about Barack Obama and his voters, she'd be fired. But say it about Trump and his voters -- millions of whom watch ESPN every day -- and at MSESPN this is cause for promotion. After the news went public of her removal from NBA coverage Steele trended on Twitter, being ripped by a mostly black audience for the audacity she has to not be a left wing liberal in sports.....Apparently she got ripped in sexist and racist terms on Twitter yesterday -- the left celebrating the purging of a Race and Gender Traitor -- but no one stepped in to defend her. Not even ESPN, for whom she is supposedly "very much employed." No one came to her aid in the sports media as these attacks ripped through social media all day long. There was total Twitter silence from MSESPN. You know, MSESPN, the same network that tried to make it appear that only women in sports media ever get bad things said about them online when they staged a viral video about mean Tweets to try and bolster their liberal talent's name recognition. Why is it when people with conservative opinions are attacked on social media the entire sports media goes silent? Why does MSEPN only protect liberal and left wing political beliefs? Especially when, let's be honest, it takes much more bravery for Steele to not trot out the same bland liberal political cliches.Outkick the Coverage has previously speculated that ESPN's boss of bosses, Disney CEO Bog Iger, wants to run for president, so he's cooking himself up a leftwing media empire as his resume for the left, and his messaging center. I hate being right all the time. Update: Yeah, the "On the Road Initiative" is what I thought it was. SportsCenter on the Road powered by Ford, which brings ESPN’s signature news and information program out of the studio and to sports events, will add more locations to its schedule over the next year. The initiative, which includes traveling anchors, crew and a set to events, began in early 2015 and has originated SportsCenter programs from more than 30 locations. So she's lost her regular hosting gig and now will just do a whole bunch of traveling. And as anyone can tell you, what a life it is to constantly be away from home and living large on room service and hotel pay-per-view. Booyah!, ESPN. "Unconscious." Cool as the other side of the pillow. PS: To see @michelleDBeadle's political tweets in the past month, see my Twitter feed for the past 20 minutes, where I've been RT-ing them. I guess ESPN is encouraging people to "connect sports to politics" -- but only some sorts of politics. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

================ Iger's situation is very different from Trump's. Trump was a media personality who can also manager. Iger is a manager. I'd love to see him jump into the race and blow a hundred million dollars of his own money in the primary to get Jeb Bushed. Is she surprised? and Are YOU surprised? I mean really, unless someone was dropped on planet Earth just yesterday, does any of this surprise anybody? She had to have made a choice, knowing how this would go. Seems like with what, three channels, ESPN could show sports once in a while if they got bored. My old housemate from England had to order some weird Euro package from Dish Network or else go to a sports bar at 10am if he wanted to watch the footy on the telly and see Totenham slam the door on West Ham or whatever. I do not watch anything on ESPN other than a specific game I want to watch and maybe, maybe College Game Day during college football season. It is 100% because of the shift from actual sports reporting to news and entertainment shit.
Also, didn't ESPN just try to rebrand SportsCenter as E60 or something like that? Sports and movies and music and look at how hip we are! Yuh huh. And as anyone can tell you, what a life it is to constantly be away from home and living large on room service and hotel pay-per-view. Steele committed the cardinal sin of daring to challenge the liberal orthodoxy that racism can only come from whites. While speaking at a conference on race in February, Steele said, "The worst racism that I have received [ as a biracial woman married to white man ], and I mean thousands and thousands over the years, is from black people, who in my mind thought would be the most accepting because there has been that experience. But even as recent as the last couple of weeks, the words that I have had thrown at me I can't repeat here and it's 99 percent from people with my skin color. When I was in Australia I was told Australian rules football involved three head sized spiders, a kangaroo on speed and two random species of snakes selected from a pregame wheel of fortune ceremony.
Four blokes are chosen, three of which get a spider and have to cram it in the kangaroo's pouch to win, while the fourth bloke uses the two snakes to try and prevent the other three from succeeding. Maritime is right - bundling needs to end, and the market isn't doing it.
Streaming was a valid alternative, but the trend there is going back to the cable model. The latest AppleTV makes this clear - to stream increasingly requires existing pay TV subscriptions, which certainly bundle. So if I want to stream Food Network, I need a cable subscription. Here's the thing I don't understand about ESPN. They talk about Other Teams, and even Other Sports.
The only teams that matter are the Nittany Lions football squad, the Red Sox, and the Patriots. I will watch any of their games whenever I can. I will then forget the games and what happened, but I've enjoyably passed a couple of hours rooting for the good guys. ESPN wastes time talking about other teams and other sports. I don't even want to see them talking about my teams, because it's just talk. Either the good guys win or they don't. Spending five hours before the big game talking about what's going to happen does not influence the outcome. Alas, being a full grown American boy I know that a lot of male culture revolves around spouting stats and opinions at each other. "Henderson sucks, he's only getting 12 wickets per hundred yards", "How can you call Manafort a goalie when he can't sink a free throw under pressure?". It used to be just annoying, now with the rise of fantasy teams it's the currency of male conversation. I blame the millenials. If I just want to pay for ESPN, I can't. Or Food Network. Or many other bundle-only channels. And the streaming model is actually adopting bundling. Aussie Rules is Gaelic Football played with a rugby ball on a cricket pitch.
Gaelic has a round ball. You have to dribble it every third step, so you can't just carry and bull your way forward like in rugby. You can't tackle, but you can "impede" so it's more physical than soccer. You can hand pass, or turn a kick into a pass. There's a soccer-like goal with uprights, and a goalie. If you beat the goalie into the net, it's three points; over the goalie between the uprights and it's one. This spreads the defense. If you collapse on the goal like in soccer, you give up easy chip shots. There's no offside rule, which is the bane of soccer. You don't need it because the game moves so fast. Posted by: VA GOP Sucks at April 05, 2017 05:34 PM (2VN2E) ============== ESPN is very much limited by contracts. Using that as an example is terrible evidence. Their pressure on cable companies is one of the biggest reasons that bundling exists at all. They can't move into the streaming space like HBO because their contracts with the cable companies forbid them from doing it. Every channel that's free of these contracts is building their own app, which they charge more per month for than they do with the cable companies, and selling them directly to the consumer. CBS All Access is a good example. $6 per month compared with free, but you have all of CBS's backlog. Showtime charges $15 a month for it's own service directly to the consumer, but less than that to the cable company. It's happening. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at April 05, 2017 05:37 PM (GBcFH) 253

I remember thinking after the disgusting O.J. I am surprised that did not happen. Yes, I went there.... Posted by: Curmudgeon at April 05, 2017 05:25 PM (ujg0T) I think you have O.J. By the way, ESPN is not just catering to the black grievance industry (you can thank Obama for that) but also to the vagina mafia. My suggestion for kicking the ESPN habit for a sports fan:
Pick a local sports team (community college, high school, D2 college or whatever happens to be close by) and actually go watch them play ball (or puck) in person. You will find that watching even low level sports in person in your community is actually far more entertaining than anything on television. The parents and family are often in the stands and you can talk to them. You actually start to get personally attached to teams in ways which pulling for a helmet sticker or jersey color won't match. I learned this when my nephew played football at a small school in Tennessee (University of the South at Sewanee). I'd drive an hour to watch all his home games and got to enjoying it so much that even after he graduated I kept going to the games. Last year I watched 5 terrible games in person there and loved every minute of it. I did not, however even watch a minute of the Super Bowl. Please don't misunderstand--I didn't say O.J. Simpson had malt liquor endorsements, I just expected it to happen.
But yes, I really was shocked when O.J. successfully played the race card. I thought, here's a guy who spent his post-athletic life hobnobbing with almost entirely White well-to-do, and IIRC, would have been a conservative political animal if he was ever one at all. Why the Racial Grievance Industry rallied to him still sadly puzzles me. Posted by: Curmudgeon at April 05, 2017 05:50 PM (ujg0T) Please understand that O.J. I'm gonna take a shit-storm of grief for this but ESPN is losing viewers in part b/c of their pushing women commentators into every realm of every sport, regardless of political bent. For example, their lineup of female announcers and color commentary on college football is turning guys off big time. Just try to sit thru a game with the husky hillbilly voice of Beth Mowins and you're reaching for the remote. Having women announcing FEMALE sports is one thing, but listening to a gal wax weirdly about male sports is square peg round hole stuff. I grew up around a LARGE contingent of females and still have many female friends/family close - only ONE of whom, my little sis - knows a rats ass about the details of any sport (NHL) to the point they could carry on an intelligent conversation with an espn-watching male. I've turned off the NFL (except for Super Bowls) and all other sports are fading fast in my fandom with the exception of college football, so ESPN has lost me for good. Watching women force themselves into sports commentary standing alongside men is like forcing viewers to love female sports the same as male sports.

Pick a local sports team (community college, high school, D2 college or whatever happens to be close by) and actually go watch them play ball (or puck) in person.
I was going to do that. The local AA baseball team has moved to Hartford and got its own stadium (Dunkin' Donuts Park! Yay New England) and a new name, the Yard Goats, which is cool. I decided to get in on the ground floor and become a Yard Goats fan. I could get a Yard Goats jersey and go to the games and enjoy the simple pleasures of the American pastime. Yeah, well, you know what the cheapest ticket is to a Yard Goats game? $24! $58 for the good seats. This is Double A ball in Hartford, which is a crappy crappy town. You can get bleacher seats in Fenway for $10 for off games. Fenway is in a real city, and the Red Sox are a real baseball team that wins occasional World Series. Ok. First, HBO and Showtime were always ala carte - they always required a separate subscription to get added to your cable subscription. So not analogous. MLB is similar - it was an additional charge, like Center Ice, and there will still be local blackouts.
And CBS is an interesting case - they refuse to be bundled, so if you want to stream and you have an existing cable tv subscription, you're actually paying for it twice. Fact is, Maritime has it exactly correct. The business model is simply transferring to the internet from physical cable. If I want a particular channel streamed, more and more it will require a cable tv subscription. A tour of the TV apps in the Apple App Store makes that pretty clear. How the intel community was turned into a political weapon against President Trump" A big chapter in American history is still unfolding. I don't want the ending to be "Osama bin Laden won." He and 20 ragheads got us unhinged. The build-up and ultimate politicization of the intel community is part of this. I rather we razed it and take our chances with terror attacks Posted by: Ignoramus at April 05, 2017 06:20 PM (SIY7D) 409

O/T, I got the solar filter for my telescope today. I am gearing up for the total solar eclipse on August 21. My secret weapon is that my niece owns a small trucking company in Casper (It will be a total eclipse there) and I'm camping out at her house. Hotels and campgrounds in that area have been sold out for two years. At my age, this may be my last chance to view this, so full speed ahead.

"Bog Iger For President/2020"
I'm trying to think of something funny to say, but all I can think of is Bog People. You know, those petrified corpses they found in Danish bogs that were thousands of years old but looked like fresh kills? NOT FUNNY!!!!!! Posted by: Sharkman at April 05, 2017 06:25 PM (rbEYh) 417

Well, there goes my grand plan to hedge my bets by reserving a room at Casper. It's total in Charleston as well, and since my sister lives there... Of course, the problem with that is the weather (which is why I am looking for hedges). I do not trust SC weather. And I got a #14 welder's glass ready to go. One more thing, Old Blue (ref#415): If that one doesn't pan out, another total solar eclipse is coming on April 8, 2024. And an annular on October 14, 2023.

Sounds like a constructive firing to me. You can't just take an employee and ship them to Nome and say that it's not a firing.

And this is why I'm a recovering sports addict. No more NFL. Haven't followed much basketball (college only the last few decades).
And I refuse to go to the website of that company in Bristol (whose name will not be mentioned) to check scores. If there's any sport left to follow, I'll get my info on it elsewhere. Posted by: Bruce in VA at April 06, 2017 10:00 AM (RPYEK) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0802 seconds. |
