Not a fan really of pop art but I appreciated his work (see "F-111"). I thought at least he had a technical ability and knew how to paint....which says it all for me. I found this in the NYT obituary, and it reinforced my opinion of the guy. Think what you will of his art, he had real-world experience and didn't minimize his connection to everyday life. "Much of the aesthetic of my work comes from doing commercial art," Mr. Rosenquist said. "I painted pieces of bread, Arrow shirts, movie stars. It was very interesting. Before I came to New York I wanted to paint the Sistine Chapel. I thought this is where the school of mural painting exists. You were painting things up close, like big chocolate cakes. In Brooklyn, I painted Schenley whiskey bottles two stories high, 147 of them over every candy store." Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

This is sort of neat, I guess, but I can't help but thinking "why?"
It's clearly not like it's depicting a scene that you'd ever actually see somewhere, so that means that it's supposed to be more abstract in purpose, in which case I definitely don't get it. Marvel Comics kind of went insane. I think the printed division has always been a kind of loss leader economically, but they seriously went banana koo koo. And it's sad, this hunger to replace every role a white male inhabits. Lines up with what Camille Paglia said in a recent talk (she's got a new book out). Someone asked her about that Canadian professor who refuses to play the gender pronoun game, and she went off on the LGBT crew insisting we change the language - she emphatically said: create your own new language, don't try to destroy what already exists/tell us what we can and cannot say. But that's the key to every progressive pursuit, whether it's comics, marriage, pronouns or even James Bond: they desire to destroy what exists vs. create their own. Posted by: Max Power at April 03, 2017 09:57 AM (QCc6B) I feel like it's impossible to write stories about the same characters for 50 years and not have things just run their course. The best TV shows lose steam after 10 (and most don't even make it that long), and there's only so many times that you can scale up the size of the conflict until things get ridiculous. You've also explored just about every interpersonal issue that can arise between the characters, so the only thing that's left to do is retcon things either through time travel, multiple universes, or some other means and inevitably you leave the franchise in a mess. There's no doubt of James Rosenquist's talent. I'm not a big fan pop art as art although it can make interesting images. The composition of this painting means nothing to me but I find the colors, both in intensity and placement, very appealing. If I needed a serious spot of color in a room, I would look at a copy of this one.
I wish I had more profound insight into this painting and its school but this damn head cold makes me feel like I'm pushing thoughts through thick cement. Bummer. Posted by: JTB at April 03, 2017 10:16 AM (V+03K) 103

Pop Art, at least in the early formations, was being done by those who had more formal training and skills.
It was, if anything, a magnification and meditation on the confluence of High Art and commercial art and a blurring of the lines between the two. People forget that in order for works to be transgressive in the formal meaning of the term, there must be boundaries which can be crossed. That's the main issue with what passes for modern "transgressive" works. What boundary are you pushing? None. None boundary is what. In a less smarty pants vein, I really like the colors in that piece. Posted by: alexthechick - Darth Sugartits at April 03, 2017 10:19 AM (mf5HN) 121

Insomniac, for you:
The body-mind loop works like this: mind freaks out, body responds by tensing/adrenaline dumping, mind reads the body tension as a reason to keep freaking out. So, either work to relax the body (breathe deep into the upper chest, limbering the shoulders, and then breathe out about ten percent further/slower than normal, for several breaths in a row), or run around a bit so that the mind can have an alternate explanation for why the body is so hyped up. Saying this as a veteran of several dozen professional orchestra auditions. Good luck to you sir! Posted by: Piercello at April 03, 2017 10:35 AM (TOLnE) 172

Since the survey results reflect Daily Action users who chose to respond it's not a scientific poll, but Lake Research told HuffPost that they're confident the survey reflects "the group's most active users." The raw numbers: 86% of those who participated were female and 66% were over the age of 45 - with 72% of women saying they'd already taken part in a protest against the Trump administration and 77% saying that they were very likely to protest in the future. h/t axios meh. There's a famous British case on justifiable homicide in which a student killed a teacher at a Brit public (remember that means private) school. It's pretty much a standard case for teaching how the standards on deciding what is justifiable have developed. We get assigned the case to read, come in the next day and the prof is all okay who thinks it was justified. About half the hands go up. Okay who thinks it wasn't. The other half go up. Prof then says you do know that he killed him because he was buggering him, not bugging him, right? Annnd that's when the penny dropped for a whole bunch of people. There were many requests for a revote. It's not funny except for all of the ways in which it is. Posted by: alexthechick - Darth Sugartits at April 03, 2017 10:59 AM (mf5HN) 271

I've successfully used gasoline that was over 10 years old. You don't go clear to the bottom of the storage tank, you know. Stuff down there is called BS'n'W, and I guess you can figure what we called that, cleaning tanks.
It's for "bottom settlings and water." Scott died in his tent because the soldered tins that held their heater fuel had allowed the contents to transpire out. It's...a canning thing. One legend is that Sir John Franklin's lot went loopy from the lead seals on their canned food. JD Rockefeller was touring Standard's drum plant and asked a foreman why they needed 40 drops of solder to seal each barrel. The boss told him they'd tried 38 drops, and the lids came off. Rockefeller said "Try 39." The resulting savings paid for Williamsburg, or built a mansion, or bought off some politician, I forget which. Sophie Vergara was in that 3 Stooges movie that came out a few years ago, which I thought was actually pretty decent. I thought her comedic acting chops were surprisingly good.
I especially liked the part when she had to help boost Moe up on her shoulders to help get over a wall and he kept missing her shoulder and instead stepped on one of her giant hooters which was accompanied by the horn honk sound effect. I wanted to tell you about this since Saturday, on the Pet Thread. I know you're thinking about getting a cat to keep your older cat company. This site: http://www.wayofcats.com/blog/ Has lots of good information about how to match cats up using their personality. There's a menu towards the bottom on the right side that will help you find articles. Basically she categorizes cats into Alpha (very active), Beta (sociable) and Gamma (shy). Betas get along with everyone, but Alphas can be too much for Gammas. Posted by: shibumi at April 03, 2017 11:33 AM (FkAXz) 387

White House lawyers last month learnedthat the former national security adviser Susan Rice requested the identities of U.S. persons in raw intelligence reports on dozens of occasions that connect to the Donald Trump transition and campaign, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter. The pattern of Rice's requests was discovered in a National Security Council review of the government's policy on "unmasking" the identities of individuals in the U.S. who are not targets of electronic eavesdropping, but whose communications are collected incidentally. Normally those names are redacted from summaries of monitored conversations and appear in reports as something like "U.S. Person One." I need a cat expert. My daughter's 12 year old cat (that use to be ours) has twice in the past week bitten her hard. This cat has always been a bit pissy but she seems to be getting worse. The bite last week required a trip to the doctor as it was swollen and red. I learned that 90% of cat bites cause infection because of the bacteria in their mouths and can be extremely serious if not taken care of. They had to give my daughter an antibiotic shot and pills. They said if it got worse go to the ER. Thankfully it got better.
Well she bit her again this morning. She does this for no reason....just walks up to my daughter and bam, bites her. Hopefully the antibiotics she's still on will take care of the second bite because if we have to go to the doc again, animal control will come take the cat and my daughter will freak out. Daughter is temporarily living with us and has to keep the cats upstairs in her bedroom...we have one dog that HATES cats. - I watched the ever enlightening celebrity Autopsy last week about Pryor. Remember when he was accidentally burned while freebasing coke? Pryor saw that, made a comment about the monk not even flinching, dosed himself in brandy, and intentionally lit himself on fire. =================== He should have made a donation to the Ignited Negro College Fund Posted by: Campesino at April 03, 2017 12:34 PM (mr2cR) 599

>>They haven't even crossed paths. Dog isn't allowed upstairs and cat isn't allowed downstairs.
"I still know," said the cat. They can show their anger in ways like that. Or peeing on the bed, as a cat I used to know did. But I don't know how to solve it! Maybe lots of attention as soon as she walks into the room so the cat doesn't need to "ask" for attention. Or start talking calmly when the cat starts to walk over to her. That has helped with some anxiety one cat has, but don't know how much it would help with anger. Posted by: Mama AJ, witch, not a nice person at April 03, 2017 12:43 PM (gTQoY) 659

How long has the cat been with your daughter before it started biting? Is it a "new person" thing, or was she OK for a while before it started? Posted by: hogmartin at April 03, 2017 12:39 PM (8nWyX) *checks* Oh hey! A fiver. This is fun. We've had the cat it's whole life....it grew up with my daughter (she rescued it actually). When we moved she took the cat. Long story. Anywhooo...the cat has known her her whole life. She's lived exclusively with her the last 4 years. It could be the cooped up thing. Husband is putting new hardwood floors upstairs and we haven't been able to open up the other jack and jill bedroom that would allow her more room to roam. He's just finished that bedroom so I'm going to have him put the door back on and open up that room for the cats. Posted by: Tami at April 03, 2017 12:44 PM (Enq6K) 665

Oh, Tami, they do make some kind of pheromone-masking thing for integrating cats, kind of a Glade Plug-in that you can't smell, but that makes them less aggressive when you're introducing two new cats. I have no idea if it works for cats who don't like dog smell, but it might?

*awaits replies that tell me to let the one dog take care of it* Posted by: Tami at April 03, 2017 12:33 PM (Enq6K) Yeah, cooping up a cat (as opposed to a dog) is going to cause all sorts of anxiety for the animal. It's not the cat's fault. Now, from what you describe, if the cat WAS allowed free roaming privileges, I think she and the dog would sort it out themselves (with the dog likely getting to worst of it). As for the bites, I get bit all the time. All. The. Time. One of my cats, he likes to ambush me, and he's never gentle about it. The extent to which I tolerate it depends on how much I do or do not need blood on me. I wouldn't even begin to know what kind of infection to expect from it. It's a way of life for me. Scratches, bites, it's what they do. They are wild animals, regardless of what we think. It's one reason why I treasure their company. My own little nature show at home. My theory is that low education or intelligence leads women to choose these names, but those same factors lead to bad life choices such as drugs or divorce and live-in boyfriends, which creates the kind of home situation that causes young girls to go into porn later in life.
One of the chapters in the first Freakonomics book IIRC was how how certain names start as high-class, become middle-class, and then low-class. Think "Tiffany" and "Madison" and such. Other names (John, many others from the Bible) remain popular, others ebb and flow (Emily). Interesting stuff. Posted by: Lance McCormick, probably willow'd at April 03, 2017 12:48 PM (u0s1P) 682
