Claims that Russia Was "Defnintely" Behind Election Hacking Relies Almost Entirely on Report Commissioned by Democrats From Private (and Partisan) Firm; That Firm Seems to Be Walking Back Its Claims

From Hot Air, Jeff Dunetz reports that the security firm "Crowdstrike" is withdrawing the report that the FBI relied so much upon.

Quoting VOA:

U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has revised and retracted statements it used to buttress claims of Russian hacking during last year’s American presidential election campaign. The shift followed a VOA report that the company misrepresented data published by an influential British think tank.

Tucker Carlson had on a professor who's an expert on Russia last night to debunk the claim that it has been "proven" Russia meddled in our election. I didn't catch his name on the show; I just prayed "Don't be Stephen Cohen, Don't be Stephen Cohen," because he's a rather notorious Russian apologist who thinks Russia is pretty much innocent of everything.

Well, alas, it turns out the professor Carlson was interviewing was in fact Stephen Cohen.

Nonetheless, Cohen's claims here are factual in nature, not so much argumentative, and it seems to me that factual claims must be met with factual rebuttals, not questions about the biases of the person offering those claims.

And I'm not aware of anyone even contesting his factual claims.

Why was a private firm permitted to conduct the analysis which the US government then adopted as its own, exactly?

Would that have something to do with the fact that the DNC wouldn't permit the FBI to conduct its own forensic examination?

21 FireEye is one of the cyber consultancies that testified at yesterday's Senate hearing on Russia. I didn't see it, but looked at their prepared opening statement:

"Let me now turn to explaining why we assess that the Russian government was likely behind this activity.
In order to make such an assessment, we reviewed and compared intrusion methodologies and tools, malware or authored exploits and use of shared personnel.
We also examined forensic details that were left behind, such as the specific IP addresses or email addresses from spear phishing attacks, file names, MD5 hashes,
timestamps, custom functions, encryption algorithms, or backdoors that may have command and control IP addresses or domain names embedded.
***
The size of the infrastructure, the targeted information, the amount of malware and the totality of the sophistication, suggests a long-term, well-resourced espionage campaign in which Russia is the benefactor. "

I'm just an Ignoramus, but it reads like they're saying it looks like the Russians, therefore it must be the Russians.

Meanwhile today's WikiLeak is about how the CIA masks its own hacking to look like it was the Russians, Chinese or North Koreans

Posted by: Ignoramus at March 31, 2017 03:59 PM (SIY7D)

22 I have always been skeptical about the Russian hackers claim. Its not that they couldn't have, its just that they never had anything solid just "it looked like Russian-style technique: which is so easy to spoof its ridiculous. My guess is Chinese, if any foreign nation was behind it. They're the most active against us.

What annoys me most is that people who cling to this conspiracy theory are the ones who refuse, refuse to understand the difference between the Wikileaks Podesta email release, and the hack of the DNC.

They think its the same, so its all tainted. Which is the entire point of all this, to get people to stop paying attention to the content of the emails which is incredibly damning and embarrassing to both the DNC and the legacy media.

And it could have been an inside by a disgruntled BernieBot.

But if it was an inside job by a BernieBot then presumably he wouldn't need malware to do it. If so, the DNC consulting firm would be lying. Which you could easily check by looking at the DNC server. 70 Ace, you're good at language analysis, and it'd be very useful to see a post on this topic:

The Left is intentionally relying on confusion over the two definitions of "hacking" in an attempt to mislead the public.

Up until about 5 years ago, "hacking" was defined as "doing illegal and surreptitious meddling with a computer." But thena more recent definition has started to become commonplace among the younger crowd: "hacking" to mean a sort of shorthand quick-fix shortcut improvement or alteration of something -- even things that have nothing to do with computers or electronics.

Best-known examples are "Life hacks" -- what used to be called "household hints" -- and "job hacks", as well as a wide variety of other terms using "hack" in relation to any kind of activity. "Diet hacks," "I totally hacked a shortcut to school," etc. etc.

This is how language evolves - fine.

But whe the left says that Russia "hacked" the election, they are INTENTIONALLY confusing the two terms. They want the average person to think that Russia literally hacked the voting machines and produced false vote totals. But when challenged on this obviously false claim, they'd say, "Oh, no, we mean 'hacked' merely in the sense of 'influenced.'"

Uh huh.

These disingenuous wordgame is at the root of this entire pseudo-scandal.

When the arrests were made at the Watergate break-in both the FBI and the local telephone company went through all the phones to look for bugs. None were found by either group.

Then days later the DNC called up the FBI and said they'd discovered a "bug" on a phone. A phone which had been checked twice by experts. The "bug" was a clunky Radio-Shack parts device with a defective transistor that wouldn't work. It was suspected that the Democrats, to further their narrative, had had some staffer make it up and put it into the phone, but that couldn't be proved.

They learned that night to not let the FBI, or anyone they didn't completely control, to do a search that might blow a hole in their storyline.

As I said upthread (largely in jest), Syria. In other words, sowing chaos, eroding faith in our processes, demoralizing a rival, that kind of thing.

Generally speaking, the IP address source you SEE is almost axiomatically NOT who did it. Especially if it is a large, organized actor. This is hacking 101 stuff.

Exactly. I could grab an IP address from anywhere in the world using a free proxy site.

A sophisticatedish phisher is undoubtedly using multiple paid proxies to hide their footsteps. Most of these phishing groups are committing all kinds of identity theft and wire fraud. They have huge incentive to stay hidden from American (and other) law enforcement.

Because we KNOW there was a crime. Who but Satan could leave absolutely no evidence??!!?!?

I think this is a lot like that. The Dems KNOW there was a crime, and that crime is that Hillary stole the election.

The only people clever enough to do that without any of us knowing how or leaving any trace are the Russians. QED.

If you had smoking gun evidence that the MExican government tried its damndest to get Hillary across the finish line and did, I wouldn't somehow think that means we get a new election.

223 105 There's nothing to go on but an IP address. And that means absolutely nothing. In fact, if the phishers used a Russian proxy to carry out their phishing attempts, that leads me to think that whoever was involved was not Russian. Because it would be kind of silly to use a proxy that still points to you, no?

Posted by: Harry Paratestes

Absolutely. I don't go looking for trouble -- because coward -- but I'm sure I could find a proxy server in any of the former soviet republics, or Russia itself within five minutes.

And the guy in Israel who was phoning in the bomb threats to Jewish entities here in the USA? Genius stuff. It took them a month just to track the country it was coming from. If he had proxied up they might never have found him.

He was probably confident being behind about six levels of deception and didn't think a seventh was necessary.
Posted by: E Depluribus Unum at March 31, 2017 04:13 PM (ZFUt7)

Not entirely true. There are other smoking guns as well beyond potentially proxied IP addresses. You can look at the malware that was used, what keyboard type and what language it was compiled in. You can look at the victim's logs and determine when they were taking place. Oftentimes if it's an APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) type actor such as a nation-state, you're going to see the hacking take place during normal business hours for that country. So for instance if the hacks are taking place 9AM-5PM, Beijing time, that's another data point on who the attacker is.

Now, all that being said, you add up all those various clues/data points and you can get a very strong inference on who the perpetrator is. But, and this is the but, if you've followed along this far, you'll notice that all of the above can be spoofed/faked as well. Incidence Response is very very difficult to do. Good hackers know how to clean up after themselves or frame others.

233 The Soros wing of the Democrat party does nothing if not choose its psy op terms carefully.
To "hack" implies a solution, or effective action, as in "life hack"
It also means, narrowly, to intrude on information in a cyber security sense.
So by saying Russia "hacked" the election can be "proved" narrowly true if there was Russian intelligence gathering on a wide-open source, i.e. Shrillary's grossly unsecured server.
But it is then spun as though they "hacked" i.e. actually effected a change in the election.
That, aside from point that whatever Russia learned, it has nothing to do with Trump facilitating it.
I'm just fed up with "the issue" being "whether Russia hacked" anything, much less whether Russia "tried to interfere."
Its an ambiguity wrapped in an irrelevancy.

241 I can't avoid the conclusion that the FBI willingly engaged in deception for political reasons here.

When the DNC refused to provide access to their servers, the FBI could have said, "then we're unable to investigate claims of Russian involvement." The end.

Instead, they went forward with information from the intelligence equivalent of the National Enquirer, while pretending they had actual evidence.

Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at March 31, 2017 04:39 PM (97XyN)

242 Up until about 5 years ago, "hacking" was defined as "doing illegal and surreptitious meddling with a computer." But thena more recent definition has started to become commonplace among the younger crowd: "hacking" to mean a sort of shorthand quick-fix shortcut improvement or alteration of something -- even things that have nothing to do with computers or electronics.

Posted by: zombie at March 31, 2017 04:06 PM (DQ4Fv)

Actually, the etymology of the term (since before the Internet Era) is somewhat the opposite.

"Hacking" Before Internet referred exactly to whipping up some makeshift solution to a problem, and by analogy to whipping up some code, usually poorly documented, to fix a programming problem.

After the Web exploded, somewhere around 1990, the term "hacking" became associated with illicit access to computer systems. Among programmers, this was originally referred to as "cracking" rather than "hacking."

Hacking has always had the connotation of chewing-gum-and-baleing-wire quick-and-dirty fixes to problems--hence the recent "life hacks" and that ilk--and has with the advent the Internet-connected world, *also* gained the connotation of illegal, illicit, and/or unauthorized access to on-line systems.

But you are correct that the Dems are willfully conflating the two connotations of the word "hacking" in order to spin the issue.

247 This is often the case, yes. But it would take a lot of hackers to make

As was mentioned earlier Mandiant/FireEye is/was the goto for Incident Response. Kevin Mandia is no joke. He's been around forever, got his start in the Air Force, knows his stuff and still has lots of smart guys working for him.

Crowdstrike is the hot startup that is nipping at the heels. They were fast building a name for themselves, and had a decent enough reputation. This however, is likely a black eye for them.

If I had to give a yes/no, I would say yes, they're respected, but somewhat unproven given how young the company is. But to be fair to them, there are many players in the Cybersecurity startup space (what I'm trying to say is that being a startup isnt necessarily a knock against you)

I'm guessing that like a lot of ad campaigns, while people liked the ads, it wasn't translating into actual sales of burgers. At least, not enough to justify the cost of the ads.

I am convinced that most advertisements are not promoting the product at all, but instead are advertising for the ad agency. We got awards! People are talking about us!

I don't go down there myself, but I know a lot of people that do.

308 The "RUSSIANS hacked the election" dummiecrat BS reminds me of the Barky *birther* people. Somehow TPTB are going to prove that Trump worked with "the Russians" to get some more media exposure of Hillary's character flaws and this will result in him being removed from office and somehow things are then right with the world.

Except sadly some big league FNM names and Dem politicians are feeding the "russian hacking" conspiracy nonsense to their hard left base. I suppose this has been happening since Kennedy or even earlier but I never used to be fully aware of the real facts + tuned in to the fact that the FNM were hyping lies to advance their party.
