Update [OregonMuse]: Pardon me, I need to elbow my way onto CDB's thread to encourage you to check our moron Mark Huffman's Twitter TL. Mark is an evangelical Christian and also an MD, and some feckless SJWs tried to explain to him about abortion and Mark sliced through all of their tired talking points like a hammer. And he did it with a smile on his face. Mark is a good man, and his TL is packed full of #winning. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

There was a version of that which opened the Clive Cussler novel Vixen 03. A stricken bomber (IIRC) was flying over dense forest trying to find a place to land and was rapidly running out of fuel. Suddenly, as they cleared a ridge, a huge clear field opened up in front of them and the pilot managed to bring the plane down. The problem was, the "field" was a frozen lake covered with a dusting of snow and as soon as the pilot switched off the engines, the ice broke and the plane immediately sank to the bottom. Today's school indoctrination story at LI. A five year old kindergartener was playing with classmates at recess a game of "Kings and Queens". She was the guard of the palace and when the bad guys showed up, she pointed a stick at them and "fired it". She was(not a joke) immediately pulled off the playground and taken to the principals office, where she was suspended and her mother called to pick her up for "posing a threat to other children". Plain and simple early indoctrination in how to be a sheep for the government. Posted by: Jen at March 30, 2017 09:53 AM (m8stq In Pre-K they are already dumbing them down. My oldest son has learned nothing from 3-year old school. Nothing. They spend way too much time indoctrinating them to be nothing but below average and conditioning them to be worker bees for the Government/corporations. I'm furious and consider this child abuse. We were at a conference on Jekyll Island over the weekend. Returning home on Sunday, we stopped at a historic plantation we'd never visited, Hofyl-Broadfield.
The last descendant died in l973 and left the property to the state. She had never married. Beautiful old farmhouse style "plantation" home (as was the norm at the time). In the early 1900's the family was friends with the DuPonts, who "wintered" on Jekyll Island and served as financial advisors to the two spinster sisters. Anyhow, among all the fascinating old things in the house, was a Christmas card from Andrew Wyeth and his wife. Posted by: Jane D'oh at March 30, 2017 10:03 AM (PY9jH) 129

Most people think of Sargent's oil portraits but I find his watercolors interesting. This one is a bit more Impressionistic than some, another change from his usual portrait work. I don't know if this was done plein air (outside) but it has the feel of it. Like Sargent's other watercolors, I find his method of capturing light to be effective. Also like his other watercolor works, there is nothing profound, it simply illustrates a scene.
This painting could serve as a lesson in watercolors with the splatter techniques, dry brush work, and delineating the various objects. In some ways, I find the use of the model to be distracting and being a male makes that more jarring. Posted by: JTB at March 30, 2017 10:08 AM (V+03K) 143

Sincere question....why do you all tolerate this kind of stuff?
I know you don't want to make your kid the focus of a complaint and battle with the school system, but were there no alternatives? Charter schools, catholic schools, home schooling? This actually was in a private school - being in Northern Virginia, private school teachers still come from the same background as their public school colleagues. In fact, in this situation it was a bit more challenging. The school policy was what it was, and a teacher wasn't eager to fight a war with the school when the outcome would be the teacher's dismissal. So I lodged my complaint, told my son that the policy was stupid and I wasn't going to punish him at all, and we had a good time. Posted by: VA GOP Sucks at March 30, 2017 10:09 AM (tVWQB) 147

We don't have school choice, remember? In Northern Virginia, private schools are pricy. No such thing as charter schools here, we have magnets that are theoretically the same thing, but they are still public schools, and you can't just find the non-prog-tard magnet to send your kids too because it DOES NOT EXIST. Homeschooling works if you have the ability to do that - two working parent family, it doesn't. Oh, and what if you have joint custody? Yeah, it doesn't work. Lots of choices inherent in this story, yes, but ultimately, we have no school choice. You take what happens because you have to send your kids to school. Amazing how fast everyone forgets. W Hysteria is old and busted, DJT Hysteria is the now. The problem is and has not been in our lifetimes any one Republican president. Nixon really wasn't even the evil dude he's made to be, and the scandals would be fairly vanilla by today's standards. The problem is a partisan and activist press and an ever more progressive leftist political machine whose unhinged tantrums go excused or ignored. It doesn't matter if it's W, DJT, Gorsuch, Little Marco, Aphrodite and all her love, or Barack's centrist clone. All that matters in the character assassination is "Not progressive democrat." The dems will demonize and stigmatize anyone who is not adherent to their dogma. I will laugh if McMuffin or any of the alt-alt-right gets some traction and they get doo doo bombed just the same. I'd say the right needs to take a hint but liberty does not benefit politicians so I would not be half surprised if they all know the state of play and just play along to stay rich and famous. Glad others found the male figure in the painting to be incongruous. Thought I was just being a curmudgeon today. But if Sargent had put a classic fly fisherman, circa 1910, on the bank, this could have been a great cover for Field and Stream magazine. Call it "Decision Time" as the fisherman has to choose between a streamer pattern for moving water or a dry fly for the quiet pockets.

@bluebell -
Venable is a big name firm, Jackson's has a lot of money. I don't know who BP's lawyers are. It's a good question what the outcome of a court case would be. My guess is that Jackson's filed the suit to get BP to change their parking deal - it may work, it will be an expensive case no doubt. However, the case as laid out by Jackson's lawyers contains the elements of its own defeat - they say they negotiated a lease that said employees and diners would park free, and if BP ever decided to charge, then BP would have to provide a system cost free to Jackson's for validation. BPs response will be that they have done what was required by the lease by providing a validation mechanism. Looks like Jackson's wants to make the case about whether BP can charge for parking in RTC and that people don't like it that they are. Secondarily, they say the validation mechanism is confusing (I have used it - it is) and that because of that (and the whole parking thing to begin with) they are losing business. I think on the merits, BP probably has the stronger case, but judges are not required to follow the law or anything, they can decide based on any reason whatsoever. I suspect that it never goes to trial, there is some way of making it easier for the validation to work, and eventually everyobody gets used to pay to park in RTC. Are we going for first impressions, or do we care about fidelity? @bluebell when I first moved to Reston there was a gravel parking lot where Jackson's is, and you would park there to go to Rio Grande. They fenced it off for about a year before they started construction.
BP is clearly being disingenuous about their intentions. They built all those garages. It wasn't out of the goodness of their hearts, they clearly expect some ROI. They own the properties and they can charge for the parking. Their deal with Jackson's is probably the same as with many others as they have the validation machines. The retail stores are probably the ones most likely to suffer because they won't be offering validation. The blowback from this is pretty bad, but in the end, it isn't like anyone will have a choice about the parking at RTC. BP owns it. You can't go to the next vendor over who charges nothing or less - if you want to go to RTC. If BP doesn't offer some settlement soon, I can see a judge telling them they have to stop charging for parking until they make the validation process easier. However it goes, that is the outcome I expect - validation to get easier. They won't stop charging for parking. Posted by: blaster at March 30, 2017 10:55 AM (tewYv) 324

They are now discussing money laundering by Russians. Of course the opening salvo by Wyden was about Trump but I gotta believe Camp Clinton and fellow travelers like Soros don't want to go down this road.

>>t's a bad fucking joke, and nobody's laughing.
It's really not going that way. The experts they have testifying all agree that what happened this election is nothing new and Russians have been spying on us and trying to use propaganda against us for a long, long time. This hearing is actually making it quite clear that they have been fucking with people on the left and right for decades and they are making the media look stupid for focusing on Trump as if this is something new. Valid question: How many guns does the European army have?
And how does that compare to the number of hunting rifles in Ohio? And in Texas? Also, have the "soliders" in the EU "army" ever "killed anything?" Or will they simply wet themselves and cry if their guns ever go off? /what an idiot. Can't even figure out the state to target to break up... eu, we will keep OH and Texas, you may steal clifornia, we won't even start a war for it. Screw that! While the CA state government deserves to be lorded over by the EU, the entitled, unelected, elitist EU deserves nothing! Yep, but the left and the media expected this was going to be all about Trump and his collusion with Russia. Not working out that way. Posted by: JackStraw at March 30, 2017 11:28 AM (/tuJf) 489

(photographer) was shooting a model under a waterfall in Truches, NM. I was on the other side of a rushing creek, like in the painting. He stepped away from his camera to shout instruction to the model and in slow-mo from across the rushing, loud water, I watched his Hasselblad on the tripod lean over and slide down into the creek! Posted by: Russkilitlover Ouch. I don't have story like that, except waterfall, too. I remember, on honeymoon in Hawaii, north shore. Walked to some scenic waterfall, wife in skimpy bikini with shirt over. I wanted her to take off shirt, walk to the base of the waterfall, about 100 feet away, through rock stream. Nobody around. By the time she got there the mechanical shutter clicking was crazy. I don't know where or how all those photographers got there, but suddenly they were everywhere, clicking away. ============= My little horse must think it queer To see an airplane drawing near Between the woods and frozen lake Watching the vanishing landing gear. As a "society painter" & a portraitist, Sargent wasn't ranked very highly as a painter by his peers. His reputation gained positive momentum as a result of pictures like the one above.
He was an American, trained in Paris, who lived in London. He died in 1925, which is a lot later than most people think, because he was so closely associated with the Edwardian period. Posted by: mnw at March 30, 2017 01:38 PM (5Ezu/) 502
