5 Nice choice, CBD! This is a fantastic piece. Gericault went to great lengths to get this piece right, from having the survivors pose for portraits to rebuilding the raft in his studio. This is a masterpiece of Romanticism.

35 Feel Good Story of the Day:

A female terrorist attempted to stab a group of police officers near Damascus Gate near the Old City of Jerusalem Wednesday afternoon.

According to preliminary reports, the terrorist emerged from the Old City through Damascus Gate. When she identified the police officers, she approached them and pulled out a knife.

The terrorist was shot and subdued before she could harm anyone else. Magen David Adom EMTs pronounced her dead at the scene. No further injuries were reported

NE OK report: We had a heckuva downpour last night. Not enough to totally break the drought, but we'll take all the help we can get, especially with all the wild prairie fires we've been having.

This morning the skies are clear and it's going up into the 70s. Should be a great day.

Weather-wise, anyway. The rest of my life is still ... an interesting challenge.

Gooooood morning, hordelingkind!

46 I left a beautiful rant in the Willow section below. Dammit.

What the hell, is it "Raft Week" on the art thread?

I thought I'd seen those riverboat guys before. ISTR there was some topical political commentary hidden in that one, and it didn't come back up.
This one, I'm SURE I've seen here before. And given its political era, it just HAS to be fraught. Fraught. With symbolism that was dangerous when new.

It's, like, a microcosm, Man.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at March 29, 2017 09:36 AM (H5rtT)

47 The wind is blowing the raft toward the left where waves are crashing against an obstacle and where the raft will founder while the few living are frantically waving toward a cruise ship in the distance, trying to attract their attention for a rescue.

It doesn't look good for the raft riders, unless there is some divine intervention.

122 So Horde, I saw Beauty and the Beast last night. Wasn't my decision, had to make the fiance happy.

It was.... ok. It's probably been 15 years at least since I saw the original, , but from what I remember, visually, they did a very good job about making the movie very similar to the animated one. Emma Watson looked a lot like Belle. The dude who played Gaston looked a lot like Gaston. The costume and set design were basically as close as you could get inn the real world without looking ridiculous.

Some things didn't translate perfectly, however. I wasn't a fan of the Beast's character design. They wanted to make it as close to the original as possible, and, especially when he wasn't wearing the elaborate clothes, his fur really just looked like fabric over a body suit. I wish they departed more, because it really didn't translate that well into a live action movie. Dude should have been at least Chewbacca-level furry. The sing and dance choreography was likewise very well done, but I thought the lip syncing with the actors wasn't great. The voices changed way too much, especially for Belle.

The movie got a lot of news for the gay dude. He was there, but the whole thing was basically "whatever" for me. The character was basically Gaston's male groupie, following him around the entire time and not so secretly pining for him as Gaston goes after Belle. It's not like he was portrayed in an especially sympathetic light. You're not supposed to like Gaston, so having this guy be falling for the obvious villain doesn't exactly portray him in a sympathetic light.

It also occurs to me that the plot of the movie doesn't really work unless you assume a priori understanding of how it's going to end. I don't think that's specific to this remake, either. There's a line early where Gaston asks Belle to marry him, and she says something like "but we're so different, I like books, and you're [basically a dumb jock. I forget exactly what she said." He responds, "but people can change." And she says, "Not that much." And that's the end of it. But up until about 2/3 of the movie, the Beast is just as bad as Gaston. Arguably worse. Gaston's just an asshole. The Beast is violent and cruel. He was cursed because he was such a terrible person in the first place. The Beast has to change as much, if not more, than Gaston would for Belle to fall for him. For most of the movie, the Beast has literally imprisoned Belle. But she falls for him because she sees what he can really become. It's what's on the inside that counts. That's the logic of an abuse victim, not a proper moral story for kids.

Anyway. I felt like it was a reasonable adaptation of the original. They lifted at least half the dialogue and just about all the musical numbers straight from the original, so basically what I'm saying is that this movie is going to give to you what you're going to expect from it, so if you want to see it, you'll probably enjoy it. If you don't really care, then I don't think you will.

133 Theodore Gericault's desolate depiction of survivors on a raft washed into the West African sea is admired for its ground-breaking use of swirls and chiaroscuro in the romantic style.

But the painting is also a testament to the horrific deaths of 133 sailors in an event that was one of history's most controversial naval tragedies, ending in shipwreck, political intrigue and cannibalism.

It began in 1815 when King Louis XVIII sent a naval fleet, including the grand ship Medusa, to Senegal to reclaim the land from the British. It was meant to be a trip of victory.

But the drama that unfolded was instead steeped in death: a vessel running aground off the coast of today's Mauritania, a bloody raft hurriedly constructed from the shipwreck, and desperate survivors going mad and eating each other.

141 I love this painting on so many levels.
For one, it's YUUUGE. Just a stunning piece to experience. Also, the story was that The Medusa was a ship owned by the French government. it was a running maritime joke. And when it broke up and sank off the coast of Africa, no one was surprised. We should have learned a lesson then: Government only makes shit worse.
Also, the form is incredible: a human pyramid, and as you view it top bottom to top, you travel from death an misery, to melancholy, to absolute hope and desire. Note: the guy at the top is signaling wildly to a ship that is so far away, it will never see them.
Thank you!

Really? I haven't looked at it that closely, I guess. And haven't dusted it off in more than a few years, I guess.

No matter how much skill goes into this type of painting (and yes, it is a type), I just don't care for any of them. The muscles, the agony, the, frankly, gayness.

Yes, real gayness.

Agreed. I think Turner was more about general atmospheric mood and essence. Many of his works discuss the puniness of humanity in the face of Nature, Time, other eternal abstracts. Gericault is trying to make a definite statement here. The hyperrealism, the size, the spilling wave of desperate people all act to condemn political corruption and incompetence. He also liked to paint guillotined heads, so the story may have attracted him anyways.

240 It must be fantastic to see this work in person. For all the desperate crowding, each figure is distinct and shows a different physical condition or attitude. (Is the older gray haired figure contemplating the death of the youngster beside him? Perhaps his son?) The foreground figures are pale and smooth and helpless contrasting with the dark water, stormy sky, and roughness of the planks. The realism of the raft and nature reinforces the power and threat to the figures: there is nothing abstract about the helplessness of these pale, puny figures against these forces. The emotional impact must have been huge, especially as the story behind the painting was well know to the public.

Much of Théodore Gericault's works were individual figures, making it easy for the viewer to focus on the theme and observe the techniques. This one must have come as an overwhelming experience.

If something bad happened to him, you can't do anything about it anyway, so there's no good worrying yourself. I don't think that's what happened anyway. If he doesn't want to talk to you, then you weren't going to work out in the end.

Also, I feel like you're doing something wrong with online dating if you're sending 50 messages and only getting one reply. That's a problem that guys have, but every girl I've talked to that has done it has had the opposite issue. Unless you've got something intentional on your profile to act as a filter (i.e. you explicitly say that you're only looking for christian or conservative guys or whatever, which is valid), you might want to look at adding and/or changing up the info you're putting on your profile.

Used to be ha ha it's funny because he's so effeminate. Now they try to make that heroic or important.

And, yeah, even in the animated, in the end, I thought Belle should have taken one look at the saved-transformed beast and said, uh, can you change back, else I gotta go...

Or the ones that live in the Sahara, where summer highs are in the 120s and winter highs are in the 90s?

Or are you talking about the ones that live in the jungles?

Or the ones in the deserts that have adapted to drinking arsenic water?

Or the ones that live entirely on the water, in boats and houses on stilts?

Which of these 6 billion humans--who live in every possible climate on Earth, from the driest, to the wettest, to the coldest, to the hottest--are not going to adapt to any new climate?

In other words: Shut the fuck up, you stupid, lying bastard.

On 5 July 1816, at least 147 people were set adrift on a hurriedly constructed raft; all but 15 died in the 13 days before their rescue, and those who survived endured starvation and dehydration and practised cannibalism. The event became an international scandal, in part because its cause was widely attributed to the incompetence of the French captain.

347 There was a Conan O'Brien bit once where he
flashbacked to an interview he (supposedly- as I said, it was a bit) did
with the survivor of a plane crash or something, and they had resorted
to cannibalism. When asked how long before they were rescued, the guy
said IIRC, "Three, maybe four hours."

It was funny. Maybe it's on YouTube.

There was a movie like Airplane called The Big Bus that was pretty funny. There was a story told of a bus driver who had wrecked his bus in the mountains and had to resort to cannibalising his passengers. He was defending himself and someone yells at him, "You gained 20 pounds!" Pretty damn funny.

Two possibilities: 1. Yeah, he's not "into" you, and therefore aloof means uninterested, so definitely move on. 2. He fancies himself a lady's man, and thinks his aloofness makes him more mysterious, and therefore more interesting to you.

Either way, behaving like a jackhole is no way to start a relationship. Whatever it is he wants from you, he isn't giving any indication he's willing to give nearly enough back.

437 Falling In Love - an amusing anecdote

One day many years ago Missus Muldoon and I were driving up a Forest Service access road in CO. We met up with a flock of sheep on the road. As we inched slowly through the flock I honked my horn. (If you've never done this, it's quite fun, sheep when startled like that will jump straight up in the air.)

Anyhow, one of the sheep jumped up and thumped against the front fender of my metallic blue Ford Bronco II.

Missus Muldoon exclaimed. "Oh no! We've been sheepwrecked!"

509 On 5 July 1816, at least 147 people were set adrift on a hurriedly constructed raft; all but 15 died in the 13 days before their rescue, and those who survived endured starvation and dehydration and practised cannibalism. The event became an international scandal, in part because its cause was widely attributed to the incompetence of the French captain.

===========================

note the lower right hand corner of the raft - there is an ax. Next to it, laying covered partially (head and torso) with a cloth is the body of a woman.

Grisly scene to paint.

That's what can happen when order fails utterly and people are left with nothing but animal inclinations to survive.

Someone filed a motion against Buzzfeed that has the best title ever and I'm so viciously bitter I didn't get to do it:

"Six ways Buzzfeed has misled the court (number two will amaze you) . . . and a picture of a kitten!"

I am not making that up.

http://bit.ly/2mPRWWT

It starts like this "In a somewhat remarkable Motion to Dismiss, Plaintiffs Buzzfeed, Inc. ("Buzzfeed") and Ben Smith ("Mr. Smith") intimate that their ties to Florida are so sparse that, collectively, they can barely find Florida on a map and that, as a result, the present case should be dismissed for lack of jurisdiction or transferred to the Southern District of New York."

Per the footnote, there's actually a picture of a kitten as an exhibit in a filing.

Someone lived the dream and didn't bother being polite. *rubs motion all over self*

Now, to be fair, I do find it plausible that Buzzfeed and Ben Smith can't find Florida on a map.

Posted by: Independent George at March 29, 2017 11:09 AM (BDZWU

Yeah. It has nothing to do with the fact that a woman is allowed and cheered on for destroying the lives of men and there children.

The court system and weak white knights from previous generations have guaranteed severe blow back for our country. You have to be functionally retarded if you believe you can destroy the lives of millions if men and boys the last 30 years and expect our country to survive.

You would have to be brain dead to believe we can survive as a country on the path of industrial level 50 million mass murdering of babies and now destroying our country's men and boys.

Men not getting married, not reproducing, and not raising families is the rational response to a country that is targeting them for destruction.

I'm amazed that some people fail to grasp this and the need to change course immediately. Unbelievable.

I did get the "set up" thing tried at a relative's wedding somewhat recently. But, the guy wasn't interested apparently, so...I guess IRL is no good either.

What's funny is just last weekend, same family was encouraging me on the guy, and I just wanted to snap at them.....they tried, it's not going to happen. Ugh.

586 It's funny though, because my friends tell me to try online dating, and then online it feels like the only way I will ever meet someone is in real life. So, I dunno what I'll do.

Find a local group that does something you love to do, whether that's cooking or hiking or whatever, and you'll meet men who share your interests. Work on living a life you enjoy, even if that means hard work and self-denial, like going to a gym to get in shape so you can do something new. Always thought rock-climbing was cool, but something you could never do? (For example)
Work on getting in shape to do it.

Always wanted to play an instrument? Take lessons.

When what you're doing isn't getting you the life you want, change what you're doing.
Men are drawn to vital women with an interesting life of their own, outside of the whole dating scene.
Read "Why Men Love Bitches": it's got some great stuff.

Yeah, I actually have read that book. In fact, I think it may be what have started my sabbatical from the dating scene. Like I said subconsciously.

Other than the dating issues, I'm actually quite happy with my life. I am involved in groups that I want to be involved in. I am sure there is always room for learning and improvement, but I'm genuinely happy with who I am.

My dating life/history could be titled: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I had so many ups and downs in between periods of voluntary singlehood that left me feeling very liberated. The blind dates I experienced ranged from Stalker Dude to OMG What a Hottie but nobody stuck until I was well into adulthood and met current guy. He started talking to me at the library.

My point is, sometimes things don't fall into place on the schedule we anticipate!

I think Brunette the 'Ette has some good ideas.

590 @589

I'm glad you've met someone...that's really sweet.

Trust me, I am well aware the schedule thing is a myth. I was supposed to be married at 22, having kids at 28. So, that ship has long sailed.

It's just one of those things where you always hear...if you are happy with who you are and comfortable in your own skin, the men will come around. I am completely happy and completely comfortable in my own skin. I am 1000% happier now than I was when I was counting calories and at the gym 3 hours a day. Because I still wasn't getting dates then...and I was miserable.

My fear is...some people are destined to not marry. That's just how it is. I know two women just off the top of my head who have been searching for 30+ years, and have never been in a relationship during that entire time. I hope that's not my destiny, I really do.

On women who feel fated to be single....

My knee-jerk reaction to seeing a pic a while back of a gathering of super-ripped young gay guys...
"What a waste of perfectly good manflesh. There's a lotta lonely women out there who shouldn't be."

Think about it. Every male gay couple takes *two* men out of The Availability Pool. The promotion of homosexuality is the real 'war on women': it lowers their chances of marriage and a family.

Didn't mean to imply otherwise..I was thinking along the lines of meeting a guy who shares your interests in a low-pressure, non-romantic setting.
I met my husband at work. LOL

593 Well, you ladies give me hope.

Yeah, taking away 2 men from the pool isn't ideal, but I figure the lesbians probably even out my chances. But, yeah you make a very good point.

Is changing my profile headline to "Screw you, I'm adorable." too much?

594 Gericault was an admirer of Constable, & as a result, Constable sold better in France (which he never visited) than in England.
