Winter Landscape
Pieter Bruegel

Only six or seven inches here so far, but the wind is roaring and it looks quite inhospitable outside. I think I'll stay inside with a cup of Black Rifle coffee* and a scone.

*Because Peets Coffee finally pushed me too far.

24 Went out to shovel at 7AM, maybe 4 inches then. It started coming down so hard that I was walking up and down the sidewalk plowing it off as it fell. Well over 3 inches per hour.

Now the wind's picked up and there's a lot of sleet in the snow, which makes for dicey conditions and coronary-bait shoveling. If it keeps up like this--and it looks like it will for some time yet--we're in for a real problem.

26 It started snowing here late last night, but when I got up this morning it had changed to sleet or freezing rain. Fortunately it was warm enough that the roads didn't turn to ice, but were slushy when I drove to work.

Now it looks like it's changing back to snow again.

30 mph. This shit is ridiculous, unacceptable. And it's sleeting. You can't even use an umbrella, because it would be destroyed in a few seconds because of the wind. Someone needs to put a stop to this crap.

28 School is closed here. For Spring Break.
Thousands of kids going, "Damn, what a waste of a perfectly good snowstorm." And the rich-bitches are already at Disney World anyway.

Not really much of one, though. Maybe four inches (but, Lake Erie swampshore, so drifts to one foot). Perfectly normal March weather, which translates in Snowflake-Speak to "Level Two! We're all gonna die!"

I'm looking out of my office window. There hasn't really been much in the way of accumulation, though I have no way of seeing whether the snow has already turned to sleet. But the wind is really howling now, so I think the brunt of the storm is about to hit.

I dislike winter, snow and cold immensely. What I really don't like is driving home, immediately having to run the snowblower before I can even get in my driveway, then having to do it all again before I go to sleep and then one more time at 3 the next morning before going to work.

First world problem, I know.

91 I don't know how many artists and styles Pieter Bruegel influenced but it must have been a lot. Some of his themes, especially the etchings presage Hogarth and others. Look at his palette, both in color and their intensity, and I see Rembrandt, Vermeer and their contemporaries. His paintings don't have the greater realism of the art a century later but it is on the way. Check out his more crowded scenes: many individual figures used not just cookie cutter copies. Reminds me of Rembrandt and, later, Copley's historic paintings. These influences are all interesting but he is a wonderful artist in his own right. And his 'moral' etchings and themes can keep you busy for a long time trying to decipher all the allusions. I think that's fun and yes, I know I'm weird.

I like the painting in the post but my favorite is "The Peasant's Wedding". Check it out on Wiki.

121 VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope Francis didn't say that God had told him to revise the Ten Commandments as claimed in a widely shared story. Francis never made the purported comments and has not changed or added to the Ten Commandments. He has no authority to do that, given that the core moral teachings of Christianity and Judaism were said to have been revealed to Moses by God and are written in the Bible.

The story said Francis made the announcement July 6, 2015, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, during his first Mass at the start of a three-nation South American tour. It said Francis had revised the biblical teaching to cover children raised by same-sex parents and removed prohibitions on adultery. It said Francis had added new commandments to forbid genetic engineering and self-glorification and said the Vatican was having a new set of commandments etched into marble.

The pope did indeed celebrate his first Mass in Ecuador on July 6, 2015, but his homily focused on the Virgin Mary and the joy of families. At no time during the trip, or at any other point in his four-year pontificate, has Francis changed the Ten Commandments.

It's the original blend, medium roast. I've been using Folgers or the Costco house blend in the percolator. The Eight O'clock is definitely superior for my taste: smoother, less acidic, and more flavorful. (BTW, I only drink my coffee black and unsweetened.) Not saying this is the best coffee out there but this may be one of the better values in the coffee world.

====

Speeding tickets are not law enforcement. They are the stupidest form of a police-enforced tax.

A retired California Highway Patrol chief admitted a few years back that speeding does not cause accidents proportionally to the degree that speeding vioaltions are enforced (Distracted driving is number one with a bullet. )

It is hard to determine actual wreck-causing violations of traffic codes such as swerving across lane lines, impeding traffic by driving too slowly, and junk-wagons spilling loads that are improperly tied down. Takes too much effort, too much chance the judge will be lenient and the payoff is minimal.

It is easy to write a speeding ticket. My Easy Bake Radar/laser shows you doing +20 mph. In school or work zone add 3-500 bucks.

Congrats. You just paid your city councilman for a day's work.

190 This is what was on Fox this morning:

The Justice Department on Monday asked lawmakers for more time to gather evidence related to President Trump's claim that former President Obama ordered wiretaps on Trump Tower's phones during last year's presidential campaign.

The House Intelligence Committee said it would give the Justice Department until March 20 to comply.

Current and former administration officials have been unable to provide any evidence of the Obama administration wiretapping Trump Tower, yet the president's aides have been reluctant to publicly contradict their boss.

On "Fox & Friends" this morning, Judge Andrew Napolitano said that even if the Obama administration did spy on Trump, there may never be a way to prove it.

He explained that the statutes allow the president to order the surveillance of any person in the U.S., without suspicion, probable cause or a warrant, but that would leave "fingerprints."

In this case, the alleged surveillance was reportedly ordered in a way that left no record, he said.

"Three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command," Napolitano said. "He didn't use the NSA, he didn't use the CIA, he didn't use the FBI, and he didn't use the Department of Justice."

Instead, Napolitano said, Obama used GCHQ, a British intelligence and security organization that has 24-7 access to the NSA database.

"There's no American fingerprints on this," Napolitano said. "What happened to the guy who ordered this? Resigned three days after Donald Trump was inaugurated."

I enjoyed Daredevil. Jessica Jones was... bleh but not the worst thing I've watched out of boredom. I could not make it through Luke Cage. Setting aside the overall tone of trying to take blaxploitation seriously and trying to be edgy by saying the N word constantly, the writing was possibly the worst I've seen in anything I've ever watched. The acting was even worse (which is disappointing since I like most of the actors in other stuff they've done). Plodding and repetitive is an understatement. If they cut it down to 3 episodes, they still wouldn't have had enough of a story. Paper thin stereotypes of an excuse for characters. Poor attempts to be "artsy" and "urban" (and suck up time for lack of story and plot) by constantly cramming in awkward and really talentless, awful music bits that were cut like in like a three year old did it with a chain saw.

Honestly, I can't say enough bad things about it. Friends and I used to get together and rent the worst B movies we could find and found it endlessly entertaining. Luke Cage is unwatchable. I kept forcing myself to watch the next one, hoping that the last was just a sad fluke but finally gave up because I got tired of being so bored during and annoyed after that I was screaming at the TV for playing such shit.

Trump's claim relies on copious media reports of investigation and surveliance as summarized by Mark Levin and others which was the basis of all of the Russia talk vis-a-vis the Trump campaign.

To resolve this all it would take is an EO instructing all IC and LEO to release any and all investigation material, warrant request and warrants pertaining to Trump and Trump associates.

And you got to love the tough language eminating from congress towards the DOJ.

One of them has a thing for toilet paper. Couple occasions it's been like some drunken teenager came in and TPed the inside of our house.

We're talking about a 17lb Heinz 57 terrier mix.

They've got lots of room to run, plenty of toys, please, girl, leave the toilet paper alone.

The car rolled a little. The cop ripped said relative out of the car, threw them on the ground and ground their face into the dirt with his jackboot on their neck. Literally.

268 This is the most perposterous okee doke I have ever seen.

Trump's claim relies on copious media reports of investigation and
surveliance as summarized by Mark Levin and others which was the basis
of all of the Russia talk vis-a-vis the Trump campaign.

To resolve this all it would take is an EO instructing all IC and
LEO to release any and all investigation material, warrant request and
warrants pertaining to Trump and Trump associates.

And you got to love the tough language eminating from congress towards the DOJ.

The GOP is a useless pack of cuntrags.
.
.
.Exactly. This all disproves every single article written by the msm citing "unnamed sources in the Intelligence Community"saying the Russians helped Trump . Either Trump's campaign was wiretapped like all of those stories claimed or it wasn't.

There were tons of articles using off the record sources written saying the IC had transcripts of conversations. Either they were lying out of their ass or Trump really was wiretapped, you can't have it both ways.

It took some time to get things corrected but my son was still out of pocket for work time lost - going to the Motor Registry to get the bike re registered etc

yeah McCain seems intent on attacking Trump at every turn. Spicer clarified that the "wiretap" in quotes indicates broader surveillance. Was McCain or the intel committee ever so concerned about Hillary's private server, or where Obama got the cash to secretly fly to Iran? nope

What happens when they set a March 20 deadline and are not satisfied that it fully explains one Trump tweet? I presume McCain and the Uniparty will move directly to impeach.

Trump can just site the NY Times and their claim of wiretap, or the Napolitano sources. It seems the internal war is ongoing, and RINOs like Ryan are being exposed. The DC Cartel will not go down without a fight.

323 You know what's pissing me off about the "Mike Brown traded MJ for cigarillos" story?

How in the fuck is that a valid transaction?!

Because I know damned good and well the store OWNER doesn't accept MJ as legal tender.

So, that means the store CLERK:
(a) paid for the cigarillos, or
(b) STOLE the cigarillos from the owner to give to Brown

In other words--Mike Brown STILL FUCKING STOLE from the store using a middleman!!

Given the leftists are perfectly fine with the government stealing for them, I can see why they're fine with (b).

324 274 Jessica Jones was a bit of a slog in the beginning and I stopped watching after the first episode, but it picks up steam and gets really good.

Same for Daredevil. Vincent D'onofrio was wonderfully menacing, and the series really took off with the appearance of the Punisher.

It really isn't. Nor is it expensive. Frankly even if you did the personal server route like Hillzebub did the tools to administer it have gotten a lot user friendlier over the years, though you'd have to worry about power and connection reliability and keeping the machine in a place with proper environment (NOT a bathroom!).

I can see a future where a built-in house server is as standard an appliance as a water heater or heat pump. But Big Data hates that, and the Deep State loathes it, so it doesn't happen.

I got stopped for speeding in upstate NY in the dead of winter , 10 or 15 degrees with snow flurries. I had rolled my window down just enough to satisfy him. The cop as usual started off as an asshole and then asked for my registration. Because of his attitude I slowly opened my glove compartment and pulled out a pile of paper work . In semi slow motion I inspected each piece of paper , front and back to signify that I was searching for the registration. As the cop was getting colder and colder outside he was also getting hotter and hotter as I continued my faux search . He finally gave up and just quickly wrote me a ticket for speeding and hopped back in his warm car. It was somewhat satisfying toying with him.

440 Five Eyes is an agreement between the intelligence services of 5 western allies, the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It was set up as a follow on to ECHELON after that program was exposed.

Basically, Five Eyes is a cooperative intelligence sharing agreement where the allies not only share intelligence but according to documents released by Snowden it allows countries to get around domestic spying laws by having the allies do the spying for them.

The Five Eyes alliance was used to spy on the UN and foreign leaders like Merkel which we know happened. Not a real stretch to think they may have been listening to Trump.

Blame the studios/ distributors for that. It's the goofy ass licensing agreements. I guess they figure if you have to wait a few days, you might pay them directly at a zillion times e price instead.

Not defending Netflix however. They used to be way better about updating content and getting new and hit stuff online when they were building their customer base. Now it's mostly crappy TV shows that I didn't care about when I dropped cable and 1,001 Netflix original things, a lot of which pretty much sucks.

I wish they'd cut back and be more more selective and discerning about the original stuff and go back to the simple business model of letting me watch a decent movie without getting ripped off by iTunes or driving to a Redbox.

469 Nightynight everyone and have a wonderful yesterday!

I was looking for a horror Aussie animal eats a human story but I found this instead

https://tinyurl.com/ztql8sd

Headline says Yanks are fleeing Down Under to avoid Trump's America...

Then the story happens... no it's not OZ, but NZ they are talking about, which we Aussies do not class as Down Under (that's OURS)

And this time last year, 100 Americans applied to live there

This year, it's 170 Americans - an enormous increase of 70 people!!!!

Yikes there won't be anyone left in the US at this rate!

See you tonight everyone!

475 The easy exercise of power is troubling, and something that this country is going to have to deal with eventually.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 14, 2017 11:19 AM (rF0hx)

I wasn't trying to justify, just explain. He's also not supposed to do that, either under the 4th amendment or policy guidelines. Sticking your head in the car is a no no.

And I agree. This is a problem and we are going to have to deal with it. I just wish we could have a reasoned policy discussion on it (societally, not the Horde per se) without dragging a bunch of shrieking race-baiting bullshit into it.

I would, but the thought of blindly projecting force on behalf of government while living off other people's taxes creeps me out.

477 Before the Window moved, a real conservative would have weighed in by now to remind us all that

"Driving, after all, is a Privilege..."

These are the same people who talk about Our Nation's Schools.
"If you didn't drive over the speed limit, you wouldn't get those tickets."

Sure, driving is a "privilege." So are water and electricity. And, like, air.
Don't think for a moment they wouldn't take all of them away from you.

482 True dat. My neighbor's Cat generator, he installed after an ice storm ten years ago, has come on maybe five times in ten years.

VERY expensive insurance. I am betting his company is paying a grand a year to service the damn thing.

Posted by: Sam at March 14, 2017 11:27 AM (lEhiV)

No way that thing needs to be serviced every three months, if it isn't getting constant use. I'd say, run it for 30 minutes, once every three months, and change the oil and filter once a year, or whenever the engine hours indicate an oil change, whichever comes first.

If it's natural gas powered, you don't have problems with fuel gelling or going stale. Only long-term issue might be humidity causing rust to delicate parts in the gas "carburetor". A small heater in the engine enclosure to keep temps a few degress above ambient would probably prevent that.

483 >>> Speaking of revenue raising those cameras...
......

*vein starts throbbing in forehead*

The mere fact that several cities have gotten so blantant as to implement the camera scam, then outsource the entire thing to a private billing/ admin company and pretend it has the force of law.... arrrrgh!

On nice thing about TX is that you can always request a jury trial and demand to put your accuser on the stand.

Yes, Your Honor. I would like to call to the stand Mr. Singh from Mumbai, aka Junior Camera Tech #486259. Oh? He's not available to testify? By the way, since when is Acme Camera Corp a law enforcement entity?

486 agreement between the intelligence services of 5 western allies, the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
-------------------------------------------
Formal agreements date from around end of WWII which cover signals intelligence (eg. NSA, GCHQ), general intelligence (eg. CIA, SIS) and counter-intelligence (eg. FBI, CSIS).

A good overview through 1980 is:

"The Ties that Bind" by Desmond Ball and Jeffrey T. Richelson

For later years there is coverage in a variety of editions on intelligence services also written by Jeffrey T. Richelson.

489 I didn't know about "five eyes", but the NSA collects nearly all telecommunications, including emails. That alone verifies that the tower was "wiretapped" under the Obama administration.

As with the "don't offer extra info to cops" advice, Trump is surely running any other comments on this through the lawyers. I figure even that first "wiretap" tweet was not just off the cuff. After MSM/Dems flipped the narrative after his excellent speech, he wanted to flip the focus back on THEIR secrets, instead of the false narrative of him and the Russkies.

It seems some in the IC are also helping Trump return fire on these false narratives, as with the three sources Napolitano mentioned, and others. Hopefully there are only a few Obama loyalists to be cleaned out of the CIA et al. But that may be wishful thinking.

491 >>Sure. Illuminating but not revelatory.

Well, not to you and to a lesser extent me but I think it was a revelation to a large portion of our citizens.

I ceased to be shocked at government spying when ECHELON was made public back in the late 80's - early 90's. But it is still pretty creepy the extent this stuff goes.
