Paul Revere.jpg

Paul Revere
John Singleton Copley

This is a spectacular portrait, done by one of my favorite artists, and one that I have never seen. So...thanks very much to the Moron who suggested I take a look.

It, and many other Copleys, is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It is apparently, and contrary to all expectations (Boston is filled with Red Sox fans) a fine museum, and one that I look forward to visiting once the Red Sox are bumped down to AAA Baseball and moved to Western Massachusetts.

The description of the portrait on the MFA's web page (click on the photo) is fascinating, and well worth a read.

The women objected when they were told they would have to share a bedroom and live in the shelter with the man, and so both were asked to leave the shelter for good, said the TV reporter.

I was uncomfortable with my roommate being transgender, said one of the women, Tracey, in a TV reporter from Canadas Global News network. He wants to become a woman, I mean that is his choice but when a man comes into a womens shelter who still has a penis and genitals, he has more rights than we do, Tracey said.

I recommend, for anyone who has not read it, Patriots: The Men Who Started The American Revolution by A.J. Langguth. It first came out in 1989, so it's somewhat out of date as far as modern scholarship is concerned, but it's a great read, especially concerning the Sons of Liberty and the Boston push towards independence. It's also a good read for your kids, to inoculate or wean them from the PC trash infesting our schools:

Crawled into a barrel and slept like a bum

"The British, the bastards!!! They stolen my horse!

Cried William who then fainted and farted.

The Mount Vernon beds are short, too. The guide said people didn't lie flat. It was the custom to sleep half-sitting up, on an angle. Dunno if this is true, I take what the guides say with a grain of salt. Beds were very expensive back then, so maybe that influenced the size. Certainly George could've afforded a long bed, but he had a short one.

200 CBD, Thanks for this. Copley astounds me with his ability to capture textures and the sheen of reflective surfaces whether metal, polished wood, or cloth. The last time you used a Copley I mentioned how well his flesh tones are done: they both compliment the subject and are realistic and natural. I also like the poses he uses for his portraits which are not frozen and suggest movement to come. (Look at his own family's portrait on Wiki. The small children are not posed so much as caught in movement.) I know the commentary mentions this painting is an idealized image of an artisan, basically too clean, but the relaxed, practical clothing and accurate detail of the tools make it very effective. I could use this image as an example of how to portray the folds and sheen of clothing and reflective items.

People are probably more familiar with Copley's portraits but take a look at some of his historic scenes such as "The Death of the Earl of Chatham". The detail, distinct colors and variety of figures in different positions matches any of the 'crowd' scenes from the Renaissance or even "Night Watch". Extraordinary and effective.

Posted by: JTB at March 13, 2017 10:48 AM (V+03K)

210 The Mount Vernon beds are short, too.

Poland will seek the arrest and extradition
of a Minnesota man after confirming he was a Nazi unit commander
suspected of ordering the killing of 44 Poles during World War II, a
prosecutor said Monday.

Robert Janicki said that
various evidence gathered in years of investigation into U.S. citizen
Michael K. confirmed "100 percent" that he was a commander of a unit in
the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion, which is accused of burning
villages and killing civilians in Poland.

The Associated Press has identified the man as 98-year-old Michael Karkoc, from Minneapolis.

299 Hogmartin, well since they are talking in the video of how Miyazaki loves planes even though they are war-machines one omission is very curious. Though given how depressing the movie is with WWII, fire bombings, B-29s, and starvation; probably understandable - Grave of the Fireflies.

If You Listen Closely and its sequel The Cat Returns also has flight sequences. More in line with Kiki's Delivery Service than anything else.

The last one never seems to last long on YouTube and can be a bit hard to track down since it was done as an in-house Studio Ghibli tribute to a song called On Your Mark by Chage and Aska. Pony Canyon released it on laser-disc PCLP-00652.

Ice storm?
Posted by: eleven at March 13, 2017 10:56 AM (qUNWi)

No, last Wednesday we had a windstorm go through the SE Michigan area that produced sustained winds of 40mph for eight hours. Additionally we had 70mph gusts. Throughout those eight hours.

Have had a really wet spring and so trees went down everywhere and took out poles and wires.

SE and West Michigan had at one point, 1 million people without power.

Our neighbors had wires come down, arc and set woods and pastures on fire as the grasses are still winterdead. It' s why we don't have power yet and as rural residents, we are last on the list.

Supposed to be fixed by 11:30 pm tonight . Oh, did I mention we are getting 3-5 inches of snow right now??

We have been on a portable generator since Wed. At least we have heat, well, etc . I will be having a standby generator installed in the next month or so as this has truly sucked.

Meanwhile, one of these yokels, Lucian Wintrich from Gateway Pundit, writes about how he was accosted by one of the Fox News White House Press Corps coming and going from the press room bathroom, in full view of the other reporters, who yelled that he was "anti-black, anti-Jew, anti-woman" and writing for a Nazi publication, and cornered him demanding to know "who is Pepe."
