To carry over from the Ryan bill thing...
First, reading long documents on the computer gives me a sick headache.
Second, to make full sense of the Ryan bill, one would have to sit down with the final version of PPACA and cross-reference what he's talking about. I may or may not have a copy around here somewhere, which I may or may not look for.
Third, on EXTREMELY cursory examination, it seems to be a somewhat piecemeal approach. I was personally hoping for an outright repeal, with maybe some kind of transition period to give room to unfuck the Medicaid expansion (which, by the by, constitutes the overwhelming majority of "newly insured" under Obamacare). That might be in the bill, but I'd have to sit down and do a line by line. If anybody wants to cough up $300 an hour, I'm happy to do it.
Fourth, I am less than thrilled with the creation of the "Patient and State Stability Fund," with control delegated to federal agencies and guided by somewhat general and aspirational statements. It looks like a new subsidy program, partially designed as a half-ass high risk pool. We didn't ask for a new federal program, goddammit. Quit soaking State residents and let them establish their own high risk pools if they should decide to do so. The bastards steal our money then bribe us with it. But I digress. It also raises the concern of what kind of rulemaking would come out of CMS for the administration of the Fund. This is in large part where PPACA took us to Destination Fucked.
I may have some more random thoughts, but this is my quick first impression after a ten-minute skim.

Spoke with Joyce yesterday: had left voicemail early afternoon, a few hours later, she called back - WooHoo!! Sounded good, but tired (Joyce had MN visitors in yesterday, which I think explains that).
Hubby texted this morning that her last radiation treatment is March 13. They have to wait a bit after that last treatment before they can run new scans to assess progress.
And as always, please pray for strength and courage for Joyce.

It was great to see the honed presentations. We still use sweat equity to put on a classy and finally fast-moving show.
It's come a long way, and it was humbling to see how great it was, with electronic clickers, 20 seconds to answer tough questions, and even video presentations (James T. Kirk on the Constitution for a cringe-worthy moment!). It was like seeing your kid as an adult for the first time.
We still had the curse of the keynote speaker. Ours was late. I still had my backup speech in memory from a couple of years ago. My wife looked at me like I was crazy for wanting to overcome my shyness and talk on the Constitution and "We the People" (this years theme) to a pretty full ballroom in the KSU Alumni Center. I was not needed in the end.
Now that I am an elected official and not part of the official group, maybe I can be a judge next year, or, dare I say it, Keynote Speaker.

I gave it a cursory read. Looks like some tweaks to Medicaid but nothing that will reduce total Medicaid enrollment. Aliens will have to provide documentation before they receive benefits. Three month retroactive coverage eliminated. Might give some small savings around the edges.
The individual mandate and a lot of taxes are to be repealed. There are some positive incentives for HSAs.
Not sure what to make of this federal state-by-state risk pool fund. Could become a money pit.

That's always the risk. The basic problem with all this is it does nothing to correct the structural problems we have with the delivery and pricing (especially pricing) of health care goods and services. The even more basic problem is that we will probably never EVER see a correction of these structural problems as a great many of them were created by the government in the first place.

All the way down to fresh groceries to the door, a business model that didn't work in dot-com-boom 1.0 (anyone remember Webvan?) but which is back, and apparently going gangbusters.
I wonder whether certain dead suburban malls might find resurrected life as JIT distribution hubs.

A few corporations, the number of which can literally be counted on one had, deciding to move their corporate headquarters to urban centers is trivial. It proves nothing and does not demonstrate that suburbs are dying.
The roads that connect suburbs to city are falling apart
As are the roads inside urban areas. It is a part of a strategy by big government to divert roads funds from road maintenance to mass transit projects. They continue to look for ways to force the American public out of their cars and onto mass transit. The strategy is failing.

Casual dining is in crisis
The restaurant industry is a cyclical as the housing industry. When the economy picks back up, people will have more disposable income and they will start eating out more again.

Went out for dinner two Saturday's ago with my son's family and his in-laws. Almost none of the restaurants in his area had any reservation time available and there was at least a two to three hour wait at every restaurant in the area.

Fairness, especially now, is something imposed from on high. A referee doesn't provide any sportsmanship to a match, he's their to look out for fairness.
I disagree with your contention that "fairness" is imposed from on high, but the rest of your comment is exactly correct. Sportsmanship and fairness are two totally different concepts.
I'm not calling a taxman a tax officer. Taxmen already have too much power, we shouldn't use language to make them feel even more powerful.

Clearly this British university has lost its mastery of the English language. I would consider that stupid, error-ridden language policy to be grounds for revoking whatever academic accreditations they have.
And I still find it amusing that English speakers, having one of the only gender-free languages around, are still obsessed with any hint of gender in a word. To prefer the term "chair" to "chairman" is peak silliness. Yeah, I don't mind using "chair" as an informal shortcut but that's about it.

And regional airlines can't find enough pilots to start at $20,000 per year. There's supposedly a shortage of over 10,000 pilots.

So I had a really cool thing happen right before my eyes tonight. Was reffing a girls HS game in central NC (ok Trump country)....before the game they announce players and they all come out to the middle of the field with the ref crew. Then the National Anthem is supposed to play. Except tonight the sound system wasn't working so no Anthem.
So the ladies suggested they just sing it a capella. I held everyone there and they just started singing. The crowd picked up too and we all sang it together. There were a couple times that the teams kinda slowed down and I had to remind them of the next line but altogether just a really great time. I do love my job!!! Most of the time..... :eyeroll:
And to be fair, this also happened a couple years ago in 99pct Obama country. Surprised the F*^K outta me.

The top 20' of a 100+' aspen tree decided it didn't want to be up there and landed on our cabin last week. The rain from the "atmospheric river" decided it wanted to hang out in our cabin, so it made itself at home, ruining the brand new maple floor in the sleeping loft. Meanwhile, the little trickle of a creek decided it wanted to be a mighty river, and rose 7+ feet to take out our bridge and part of our fence.
Fun times, fun times.

In Israel they have mandates about a lot of the construction having to have solar water heaters (pretty much just tanks on the roof with the water running through some solar heated piping - they've been doing this for decades) but even with all the intense sun they get there everyone still pays for electric water heaters ... because the solar stuff just doesn't work well. Sure, in the summertime even the cold water in the ground pipes is pretty warm, but in the winter ... no go with the solar bullshit. And people just like to have hot water when they want it (even though they have to wait some time for the electric heaters to get a tank warmed up).

Buddy of mine is a captain in the majors and makes the big money flying wide bodies.
But he started at a regional. They get paid hourly. And only for the time in the air - sitting at the gate, or on the tarmac, they aren't getting paid. First couple of years he was only making about $30k. That was some number of years ago, but not ALL that long ago. Starting pay at regionals is likely in the 40s.

At my house here in Arizona, I put in a 40 gallon electric water heater. In the summer, the water comes out of the mains warm enough to shower in. In the winter it's cooler, but by no means icy. With a roof-top solar water heater, a couple of small point-of-use instant water heaters might make more sense than a large tank-type one.

The pilot of a B-747 or Airbus A-380 on International Routes, is easily a quarter mil a year earner.
But note, those are the absolute top tier, end of career, glory routes before those pilots are forced to age-out in retirement at 65, I believe.
Pity, the cabin crews also get the International Routes via seniority and hours.

When those closing happens, it means empty space in the malls and triggering of lease clauses that lower the other retailers' rents, and in some cases giving those retailers an "out" of their lease.
Add to the problem that when those malls go to fill those vacancies, the new national retailers usually have criteria that includes one of their competitors being in that mall. It's not public criteria, but an in-house criteria that is used because it's a pretty easy decision to go where your direct competition is since you are going for the same shopper. Modern water heaters are so well insulated that the heat lost to the room (which would have to be handled by air conditioning), is almost imperceptible. Touch the housing, and it is cool. Water heaters eventually fail, and then leak. I wouldn't want that in an attic.

My water heater is in the attic.
But, it sits in a molded plastic catch-pan, with a 1 in. I.D. drain pipe that leads directly to one of the plumbing vents leading to the roof.
Heater leaks, the water just goes down the sanitary lines.
Oh, and my attic is part of the house's HVAC envelope. 8 inches of sprayed foam insulation under the roof deck, and the walls full to the sheetrock, with the same.
Used to be likewise under the house, but tearing out the subfloor after Hurricane Ike, too the insulation with it.
So for now, R-30 fiberglass down there. Till I can afford to bring in the sprayer for an 8 in. layer of closed cell, under the house.
Energy bills here are....low.

This discussion could go on and on. An advantage of the heater being within the living space, or basement, is that radiated (lost) heat from the tank will be captured within the house.
I would think the best arrangement would be an attic exchanger, which could be switched in and out of the supply to the heater. The exchanger need be nothing more than lengths of copper pipe. Probably have to be drained down during the winter. Just depends.

Well, I am optimizing this AZ house for Winter occupancy, and also for low capital cost for appliances and fixtures. It will mostly sit empty over summers. All electric, no gas. Electric baseboard heaters for room heat, no furnace or heat pump. Window-shaker A/C for occupied rooms as required. Electric range. No dishwasher, although I will rough in for one.

Yep. And with properly engineered HVAC duct and return so as to keep that space dehumidified, as well.
It does not stay as cool as the rest of the house.
But when it's 100 degrees in a Texas Gulf Coast summer, my attic is only in the low 80s.
And that's with the AC set for 75 in the house.
I kind of like this setup.
My attic gives me about 200 sq. ft. of decked storage, too.

We live in a tiny enclave of township land surrounded by the city. Not as bad as it sounds. City cut a deal with township a couple of decades ago to get the golf course (and its PGA tax revenue) annexed. No zoning changes. Got 1.5 acres, tall dense trees and the back boarders Metro Park (the wooded part). We're set back 120' from the road. Not the sticks, but not half bad.
Park visitors do call 911 on me when I test fire new loads behind the garage (especially the 338 Win Mag). Often enough that the City PD, Park Rangers, and County Sheriff have sorted out responsibilities. Heh.

I think I have seen those, or similar, in motel rooms. Noisy, as indeed the window-shaker air conditioners are. The baseboard electric heaters are silent; work by convection. I managed to snag a brand new one, still in the box, for $20 at a yard sale. 5500 watt, 240 volt.

Between the Pilot's Unions, APAOA, FAA and the airlines' lawyers... this does not happen.
Flight Universities, such as Embrey-Riddle, are pumping out as many pilots as they can.
But the low entry pay, and horrid conditions for recently minted IFR, Commercial, Multi-Engine and ATP Pilots, (all of which are required ratings), results in a horrid attrition of pilots who would otherwise ascend through the ranks.
It really is a choke point in the pilot's career funnel.
The USAAF and USN, used NCO pilots to good effect in WWII.
Regionals could pay a good, non-college pilot $40k, with no higher career path, and get a raft of tremendous pilots to secure those routes.
The current system is failing, and killing them.
And sometimes, us.

I've mentioned before how the rumble of artillery is a nice aspect of playing golf at the Camp Pendleton course (along with the rattlesnakes in warm weather).
Years back, when I think the Marines used to practice that sort of thing more, there were a time or two that I was a passenger in a car on I-5, passing through Pendleton on the coast, and a full-scale amphibious exercise was on. Plenty of ships off shore, armor rumbling along dirt roads paralleling the freeway kicking up dust, Hueys with Marines hanging on lines crossing the freeway from the beach side.
And lots of motorists pulling over to the shoulder to see their tax dollars at work.

Went to the WA Coast today. Saw three Trump signs on the way. Talked to an ex-Texan that said the county had gone Republican and it was unusual. We have a possible house in the area and ruled out four others. It's all motivation to get our house on the market. I think it will go quickly when we do.

There was an ugly event out here recently, where someone had bought a large elderly warehouse in Croakland and made the thing over into a weird hybrid by way of artists collective by way of live-in residences by way of music gig space.
So they'd packed a lot of people and a lot of flammable stuff into a setup never designed even for occupancy, and were often throwing raves and whatnot inside.
Sure enough, during one of their mongo parties, the place took fire. No suppression systems, no alarms, no emergency exits, wooden stairs burning and collapsing. With a whole lot of panicked partygoers trapped inside. Bad bad news.

I used to live at the intersection of Orangethorpe, and South Gilbert.
Before that, in Fullerton, off of Commonwealth.
Back then though, Knotts did not have a fence around the property. I watched their replica of Independence Hall being built.
And the time frame was in the mid '60s.

yeah there was a massive sunshine biscuits factory around here. It got torn down eventually. That place was epic huge, there's still railroad tracks going to the property. That would have been cool, but the foot print was so big the land was probably worth millions.
They sold the school I went to from grade 1-6. It was really old, built in the earlier 1900s. A big square 3 floor all brick building. Probably around 60-70ft wide, 40-50 feet deep. They turned it into retirement condos. I would have liked to know what they sold it for. That place would have been intense.

Being next to the 5 apparently made the building rather dirty, I always remember it looking a bit squat and ugly. Although I've read that production levels and employee morale there were really high during Nabisco's salad days.
Buena Park is an interesting community. Some parts of it are beautiful, some of it is... just plain icky.

I know a guy who lives in a former automobile factory in Joliet, Illinois. Building is circa 110 years old, and the original freight elevator still works. He has a lot of cars, and car parts stored in there. Amazing place. Amazing guy.

Well, that sounds quite peaceful for the moment. Mine are long gone, but fondly remembered.
Zoomer was the 2am wall-racer. Thud was her brother, that enjoyed making leaping 4 point landings on each step, while both coming down AND UP the wooden 2nd storey stairs. Amazing amount of noise he made for 1 fuzzy cat. He was very proud of how much noise he made.

My Mom told me, when I was well into my 30s, I'm never too old to be put across her knee. Then again, my Mom was a serial child abuser because I was not only a free range kid, but a latch key kid as well (before 'latch key kid' became a thing). Mom would leave me a list of things to do when I got home from home school (such a slave driver!) above and beyond my homework including food prep for dinner, like putting potatoes in the oven to bake. I managed to do all that and still find time to play with my dog.
Mom related this story to me years later: There was this one time she came home from work and called my name; I was around 10-years-old. I didn't answer so she went looking for me. She found me in my room, with my .22 bolt action rifle disassembled and being cleaned. She later told me she turned around and walked away, leaving me alone, because I 'was doing something useful'.
In today's world, Mom would have been in jail and I would have been in foster care.

I actually liked the 'alone' time after school; I still like quiet alone time which is one reason I'm here on the ONT. After the bustle and hubbub of school, it was quiet and I got to play with my dog. Problem is, kids today do not know how to entertain themselves (without electronic devices). If I ever uttered the phrase, 'I'm bored', Mom would find something unpalatable for me to do, like clean my room or, worse, the dreaded garage. I was never bored 'out loud'. If Mom ever got that 'look', I knew it was time for me and the dog to go outside. 'Braveheart' springs to mind: FREEDOM!

Our daughter had been in that building back when she was in Oakland ('10-'13). She said there were many others like it in which the "arts community" resided because studio space was tough to afford.
Her general tone in discussing the matter was that "someone higher up" was to blame because the "arts community" members' needs weren't being met. She's thirty-three years old, but going on five when it comes to understanding how adults must function sometimes.

For those of the TL;DR camp, passivity in a presidential candidate is not good and 'roaming the stage' full of confidence wins, even in the female version of Trump. It really upended many audience members' preconceived notions about what they witnessed and thought of the original live debate.

And Trump was just Trump, as always. She was so bad he almost won by default, though he did have some strong moments scattered throughout the debates while she had none.

I can only imagine. I was the only child of three. My brother is 13 years older than me, my sister 9 years older than me. By the time I was 10, both were out of the house.
Oh, and I was the bratty 'baby' brother.
One time, my sister went to visit a friend whose dad was a Navy captain living in MoQs. They had white furniture in the sunroom. I was around four or five, and my sister had to drag me with her. So, being a precocious (yeah, I'm going with that) little boy, I immediately began jumping across that white furniture, leaving small footprints all over it. Both my sister and her friend were aghast, and feared what her dad would say or do when he saw what I had done. Now the captain had three or four daughters and no sons. So when he saw what I had (innocently) done, all he said was, 'That's a boy!' Shocked both my sister and her friend.

I wasn't allowed to jump on the furniture, either. I have no memory of that escapade. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
I even had to train my dog not to jump on the furniture as it was 'Mom's rule'. She only hopped on the furniture if we left her alone in the house for a bit. We'd put the key in the front door and hear the THUMP of her jumping down. She knew she wasn't supposed to be up there and when we walked in, she would be sitting on the floor, innocently wagging her tale. When I felt the sofa where she had been (it was still warm), she'd get a look of, 'Oh crap. Busted!' But I couldn't do anything or get angry because she was already off the couch. She was a funny, sweet, spoiled dog who knew the rules of the house but would break them when she got a chance. As far as knowingly breaking house rules, I'm not sure if she wore off on me or I wore off on her.

I don't recall ever doing that, but on Thursday evening, Mom had "bowling night" and my brother would take all the mattresses off our beds & the couch cushions, and anything else he could find, stack it up, and we would have wresting night.
He would literally throw my little ass off the second floor onto a pile of pillows like he was Rik Flair.
By 9:30 or 10, we had the house back in order...

That was me in college. I was a few years older than most in my classes and far more mature. I had a friend, who was the same as me, and we talked about how stupid some of the younger 18-20 year olds were. I was considered the old man in the classes at 23.

The conventional wisdom is that everyone is striving for the intimacy and richness of the urban lifestyle.
And that in order to fully enjoy that vibrancy and cultural diversity, they are willing to surrender the dream of fewer people per acre, and the large yard, in order to really live the South Park Sodosopa lifestyle.
And the documented trend is the opposite.
If the suburbs are taking on the urban flavor, people are migrating further out to get to the desired lesser density levels.
