First Come, First Served
Richard Brydges Beechey

Three pilot cutters are shown racing towards a ship on the far right waiting to come inshore. The first pilot to reach her will have won the right to board her and be paid for his services. This is the meaning behind the title. The image shows the boats skimming the waves, with the signifying letter 'P' on their sails. Four men are visible in the first cuttter, particularly the man in the stern with his hand on the tiller, steering.

Wait for the wind shift.

The very first skipper for the 100 guinea cup, aka America's Cup, was a pilot boat captain from NY, Richard Brown. The owners of the yacht were from the NYYC and they knew of Brown's mad piloting skills and hired him. They then tried to screw him up by insisting on yacht and sail design changes he didn't want. Owners, blah.

It was during that first race that one of the Queen of England's entourage uttered the steak knives line long before Alec Baldwin. As she was watching the race and saw America winning she asked "Who is in 2nd place". The reply, "You're majesty, there is no second place."

And now you know, the rest of the story.

Two Paxton films mentioned yesterday (one by me), that deserve specific recognition as quality offerings:

"One False Move" and "A Simple Plan."

Both co-star Billy Bob, and I'm not sure if that's coincidental or not. I'm not sure of the pedigree for either film, in terms of writers, directors, producers, etc.

Both in the gritty crime genre, if that's an actual genre. His roles are different and yet quite similar in each. He's one of those guys, I'm not sure he's a great actor, but he plays parts well.

If that makes any sense.

137 Damn, really like this painting. The artist captured the look and feel of that rough in-shore water. Beechey's color choices are correct as well from the storm clouds to the yellow-green of the water showing through the spume to the sails and hulls. This is an exciting image, beautifully depicted. It must be spectacular to see this full size and up close. I wonder if those not familiar with such scenes can sense the sound of the winds, taste the salt in the air and the smell of the roiled water. I can.

The painter was a retired admiral and knew his subject. I believe the positions of the crew are also correct.

Thanks, CBD.

There are times when Billy Bob seems to be yucking it up, like the parts just aren't interesting enough for him, so he gets cute.

He's not cute. He should stop trying to be cute.

That being said, I liked "One False Move" much better. It's very sinister, and the Paxton character is almost innocent compared to everyone else. Well... he IS innocent, in that he didn't commit any of the crimes involved, but he is... eh, somewhat corrupted by the proximity of everyone else. Great great film.

I marvel when artists are so well able to capture something like this that is moving literally every second, constantly changing, and create a snapshot of one moment in time.

Yeah, I don't get why people feel obligated to torture themselves by watching it. I also think part of what encourages actors to go on rants is that they think that somehow people are forced to watch it, so they go on and on like a hobo on a subway who knows he can rant at people and still have an audience, because they can't escape until the next station. A ratings plunge might encourage them to behave in a more considerate manner.

I used to watch the Oscars when I thought it was a celebration of movies, which the Academy did a decent job of providing that surface to it.

The mask on that slipped off a few years ago and it's now blatantly a celebration of Hollywood.

Which is understandable since it's an industry awards ceremony. I'd expect a statistics organization would celebrate the people more than the advancement of the field in an industry awards ceremony. It also just means that the appeal becomes more and more selective the longer it goes on.

I would possibly start watching the Oscars again if they invited no stars to the event, and the awards were given out by movie fans. They could still be voted on by Academy members exclusively. But the event itself would need to be about movies, not the glitzy people. I don't care about the glitzy people.

See my figure was chiseled from stone

Come last call, I'm never alone

That puts Hugh Heffner's mansion to shame
With girls by the pool and Italian sports cars
I'm just here in this dump for the game

And not coincidentally, the Coen brothers continue to crank out one after another, entertaining films that will never win Oscars, even if they are occasionally nominated.

Same with the Andersons... Wes and (to a lesser extent) Paul Thomas.

293 I went to an oscar party last night, so I'm probably one of the few that can report on the whole thing.

I LOVED they got the best picture winner announcement wrong. Loved it. As someone on Reddit put it, Hollywood wants to tell us how to run our lives and they can't even run one awards show?

Kimmel I was actually impressed with, he did some trump jokes but they felt obligatory, did not have any real bite to them. Most of it was benign. He had celebs read mean tweets about themselves, that is always fun. The bit with the plebes getting a surprise visit to the show actually was quite cute, they looked so happy. One of the few funny running gags was dropping little parachutes of food from the sky, which was totally stolen from the MoTab Christmas concert featuring the Candy Bomber. The speeches and category announcements that went political and judgey were asinine, but expected. My friends and I talked over the worst of the political stuff.

Gael Garcia Bernal?

The guy's mom is an actress, dad an actor and director, uncle a cinematographer....so that's like Kate Hudson claiming to be a migrant, LOL!

341 @230 Fuck that shit. I want to be entertained, not preached at.

You know what Samuel Goldwyn said about messages, right?
Well did you know what a smart-ass Fritz Lang was?

Oscars? Went once. Cleaned up. Never again.

I was thinking of Costner as another example, like Paxton. Not really an "actor," but plays parts well.

Although I probably like more Costner films than most people do.
At least one viewing. His magnificent flops were fun to watch, the
first time. Both "The Postman" and "Waterworld," even though I
enjoyed both, I'm not tempted to watch them again.

Costner's best part was in the opening sequence of "The Big Chill."

343 Seriously, that is awful. Both the self-invite, and the speech
inflection. It grates on my nerves after a while as well. I want to ask
them if they were never taught to use declarative sentences when in
school. Why always the questions?

Vocal fry is worse. I blame the Kardashians.

Among the many good things about the "studio system" is that they would put you, the wannabe star, through a long series of lessons to teach you proper deportment, couture and elocution.

The first time I ever heard Natalie Portman speak, I shook my head in despair. Louis B. Mayer would have killed himself before he let even the trampiest, lowest, newly-hired, scar-tissue-on-the-knees starlet on screen with such a voice.

344 I do want to see Hacksaw Ridge (but not in the theater).

346 "It's like they paint by number these films, design them to win Oscars. "

Spot - on !

Just like "teaching to the test" in the so - called schools.

In the big, culture - wide picture, it's either the cause or effect of decadence, your choice.
