Women Flips Out Over a Guy Opening a Door For Her, Because #FatPositive or Something

She's "seething with empowerment," David Thompson writes.

So, this woman used to be very fat. She says men didn't hold doors open for her when she was fat. Now, she claims, three times in a week, men either hold a door for her or do some other minor helpful gesture.

And she's enraged about it.

Eh, I kinda get the "Why didn't you treat me like this when I was fat?" -- kind of. Except she doesn't know these random people wouldn't have done that several years ago. She's doing a lot of assuming.

Also, here's a serviceable secondary definition of decadence:

decadence: noun. a state of comfortable disengagement from reality in which one has run out of real problems and must make up fake problems to give the animal parts of her brain a work-out, or a similar state which encourages flights from reality in which decadent people studiously ignore real and difficult problems by inventing fake and easy problems to distract them.

Fake problems are kind of comforting, aren't they? They're entirely within your control. After all, you invented them. You get to be the hero of a dramatic struggle with absolutely no risk of failure or setback, because, well, it's all a fucking joke in the first place.

====================

I don't think it's really assuming about an individual, but a remnant of Marxist/classist thinking that people are no more than a member of their class.

They're not individuals to this woman.

So, when one man two years ago didn't open the door for her, that meant that he was representative of all men.

It's terribly toxic thinking.

Remember, the smallest minority is the individual.

43 I love this bit:

But the thing is, I was amazing before I lost the weight too. That girl had the strength to become this woman. That girl had the courage to leave home at 16 years old in search of a new life. She had the passion to pursue a career in the arts and actually succeed. And she had a big enough heart to not notice that people were mean to her along the way.

OK, let's agree that you were an amazing person. You were also morbidly obese. That makes you (listen carefully now) medically ill: while that does not justify rudeness, it IS why people found you unattractive. That's how people react to illness in others. You fixed yourself. Great! Now get some therapy, because you clearly have issues and you could get sick again.

Oh, and fuck off. No one cares about your emotional life.

"The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!"

So today at CPAC, Trump made the point that he never said that media was the enemy of the people, just the fake news outlets.

He agreed.

Anyway so we get into the self-serve buffet line with people we've literally never met and there's a fat guy behind us and we make some quick hello-type conversation and my friend says, "I had to make a quick move to the line, to get in front of you."

The fat guy goes, "Why?"

And my friend, who promised he would not act like himself but instead act like the normal people he observed all around him, said, "I wanted to get in front of you, because otherwise there would be no food left."

Now if THAT GUY wanted to write a teary confessional for the Guardian or whatever, I'd say: "You've earned that right."

I'm actually less likely to hold open a door for an attractive woman.

I try to avoid attractive women thinking that I'm into them. Not that I think they'll jump my bones without notice or anything (although...GAINZZ!), but that I just never want to get into a situation that could compromise my marriage.

Doesn't mean I don't do it, but that when there's a borderline situations (is she too far to keep the door open? or close enough?), if the woman's attractive, I'll be slightly more likely to give it up to the distance than hold it for a bit longer than I find convenient.

267 Thanks to Ace and the AoS GAINZZZZZ, I dropped 60 lbs between July and November.

I can tell you, you get treated the way you treat people. Normal run-of-the-mill folks were very nice to me, because I was nice to them. Weight didn't matter. And these days my friends say they are amazed at the weight loss, but I'm not being treated any "better" or with any more deference or whatever than usual.

So I think this woman was just a bitter beyotch and it bled through with her regular interactions with people.

Thompson missed her point, and I think you are too. The woman wrote a self revelatory article where she realizes her own unfairness, citing that man opening the door for her as an example. Thompson responds by criticizing her for holding views that she herself is criticizing about herself.

He opened that door for me because I wasn't physically offensive to him, and I knew. And it was in that moment that I realised how terrible we are as a society to people, based solely on their appearance. This realisation broke me. It broke me in a way that I've never been broken before. He certainly didn't deserve my outburst, but in that moment I couldn't help myself.

After receiving some pushback in his comments section, Thompson then updates his piece by questioning whether or not she has any factual basis for thinking that the man would have opened that door when she was fat.

I guess I think it is poor form to respond to someone who is admitting fault in themselves - as the woman did in describing her unfair outburst towards the man who opened the door for her - by jumping on that person and to start beating them up for the same thing they are beating themselves up over.

The woman is trying to talk about something real. Her belief that chivalry is very much dependent on the attractiveness of a woman, as perceived by the man who is offering it, or in many cases, not offering it. And, how that rejection can feel to someone who is unattractive. As she herself admitted, that double standard made her act unfairly to someone who didn't deserve her outburst. But, the behavior of others is also worthy of discussion.

347 I realised how terrible we are as a society to people, based solely on their appearance.

I think there's a problem with modern society in that we want very desperately to pretend beauty isn't real, isn't objective, and isn't worthy of praise. Tom Selleck is a beautiful man, far more so than I am. He's worthy of praise for his appearance (not to mention his character and thoughts), simply because of that.

Beauty enhances and blesses society, it brings our souls joy. Beauty is good. The fact that beauty receives this is not a flaw with society or a wrong.

The only "fault" she finds is the discovery that she needs to pound people for having it in for the overweight and helping the overweight or something.

She's not apologizing for the outburst. She's saying the outburst was an epiphany (or was the product of an epiphany).

I read the Guardian article in question. She deserves every single bit of scorn that is being heaped upon her.

The jumping off point of the article is her claim that now that she is not fat, men buy her drinks, help pick up her dropped items and open doors for her, which no single man ever did before and thus it is only those who are within conventions of attractiveness who receive courteous treatment.

That is simply absurd.

Last week I met a client in Orlando (She's from Chicago) for a

The heteronormative expectation that people will behave differently to others depending on how they simply look is intolerable. We, as women, and especially as engineers, need o replace it with a society in which everyone gets the same basic human respect, including female engineers. I, as a woman and engineer, want to build that world, because my feelings about how ordinary people behave in ordinary ways that I sometimes find unpleasant, are deeply worthy of a column in a newspaper.

Plus, I am a woman and an engineer, and don't f8ck with female enfgineers, because I am one. An engineer, I mean. And a woman. Both. It isn't impossible, you know. You sh*t.

I think it's the buying drinks bit that I find absurd.

Of course dudes are only going to buy drinks for girls they want to sleep with, and of course men find thinner women to be more attractive than larger women in general. The idea that men should be spending money on fat women they don't want to sleep with just because is silly.

The other stuff: I doubt all of that. Men may want to go the extra mile for an attractive woman rather than an unattractive one, but we still pick up things and hold doors for fat chicks.

Not to be contrarian, but as a guy, and being somewhat antisocial, I do not like to have the door opened for me.

I do the same as what you do, but in reverse. If I'm behind someone, and I suspect they might hold the door for me, I just divert my path and head for another door, or walk away and come back later.

Have any of you ever been stuck in a shopping aisle behind two large women trundling side-by-side at a snail's pace?

I don't mind that, at least they're still moving. Its the women -- inevitably women -- that stop in the middle of the aisle, block it entirely and begin to have a long conversation about meaningless crap that makes mister fist start to make an appearance. Even worse: someone with a cart taking up half the aisle, and their useless carcass taking up the other half, staring at their phone.

The jumping off point of the article is her claim that now that she is not fat, men buy her drinks, help pick up her dropped items and open doors for her, which no single man ever did before and thus it is only those who are within conventions of attractiveness who receive courteous treatment.

That is simply absurd.

492 It's not absurd. It's partially true. Most people with manners don't operate based on looks .... but a guy might certainly up his manners for an attractive woman. It's only sensible since he would like to engage with a pretty woman - maybe he'll get lucky - while he is just being courteous for an unattractive one.
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at February 24, 2017 03:04 PM (zc3Db)

It is absurd. Here's the quote:

"I had been disregarded, overlooked and ignored because of my size for so long that I didn't even realize it until people started being nice to me - until, in other words, I was 'normal sized.' No one had ever done those things for me before."

Those things refers to the following: a man bought her a drink at a concert, a nice man who helped her scoop up her groceries after she dropped her bag and a man holding a door open for her.

Now, the drink at a concert I believe but the other two? No, no, I do not believe it. I flatly do not believe it. I am very very very certain that people treated her with basic common courtesy on a daily basis and she simply didn't notice. Now, I also believe that she got a lot of flack for being very overweight because human beings are awful. But no one ever held a door for her? No one ever helped her pick something up when she dropped it? Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

I do not believe that "That moment changed every single thing about me." either. The only way it did so is if she realized that *she* was a horrible human being who treated others with decency only if she felt they passed some kind of test. If so, then she is the awful person, not the rest of the world.

This mission that she's on? Yeah, most of us learn that by kindergarten, sweetie.

(2) look like a weirdo as I noticeably pick up the pace of my stroll so I don't have to make them wait.

Either way it harshes my mellow. Look, dude or dudette: I'm a reasonably healthy male, walking without a cane or other device. I can open my own door. Thanks, but no.

Speaking as an old guy who used to be -- I'll just say it -- very good-looking. ... Well, I'm still good-looking, but it's obvious I'm over 50, I can sort of see where she's coming from, but I have no sympathy at all. Women are still nice to me sometimes, maybe a little on the edge of flirty once they get to know me a little, but by and large all I get is one quick glance and then the unfocused lookaway. And nowadays I appreciate even the one look! If you've ever had women look at you with genuine attraction that causes your brain to squirt of every tickling hormone it knows of, and then one day wake up and realize That. Will. Never. Happen. 545 357 anon y. mous,

I just re-read it, and you're all wet. She's upset that people, not her, other people, treated her less kindly when she was fat (she says). She is not finding fault in herself, but in others. The only "fault" she finds is the discovery that she needs to pound people for having it in for the overweight and helping the overweight or something.

She's not apologizing for the outburst. She's saying the outburst was an epiphany (or was the product of an epiphany).

Posted by: ace at February 24, 2017 02:55 PM (8rNrN)

++++

Yes, she is definitely finding fault in others. But, she also admitted her own fault. The thing that Thompson and others are focusing on is her outbusrt towards the man who did nothing but hold a door open for her.

And,most of us have heard of something like this before. Although, usually, it is some horrid feminist type that objects to being abused by the patriarchy through the simple act of politeness. The variation here is that she was screaming her head off because she didn't get that treatment in the past.

But, she admitted fault. She then gave us her perspective of how she got so crazy, with a large prescription of how others could improve. But, she didn't try to convince us that she was right or that men should stop offering to open doors for women.

Person tries to use credit card. Doesn't work. Tries again. And again. Credit card is declined. Uses a different one, but only for a few dollars. Pulls out a third one for few more dollars. The next one is declined. The one after that is declined. Then the one after that. They then decide to write an out of state check, oh my, where is their ID, and then, after that's cleared by the manager, they pay the final amount in small change that's at the bottom of their purse.

Maybe that's why I like the self check out lines. Although that doesn't guarantee there won't be problems.

That exact thing happened to me. I was getting out of my car believing I was utterly alone when a loud voice behind me shouted "LEFT." In the instant it took for the shock to subside, before I even turned around, I had moved one step to the left, because that was the command my brain was following. He missed me by about three inches and, of course, being a bicyclist, shouted "Asshole!" at me. Which, of course, he was right to do, because everyone knows that in a collision between a bicyclist going 25 mph and a pedestrian standing flat-footed, only the bicyclist is going to be injured, and I was fully cognizant of that when I disobeyed his order to move to my right, which should be clear when anyone shouts "LEFT" at you at the top of their lungs.

I did that for about a month then decide it was stupid to make men think that their courtesy and manners were unacceptable in the public sphere. But over time I noticed men weren't opening doors for me, and I was pretty cute. I'm older now, heavier, etc., and in the last 6 months have noticed men opening doors for me all the time! 577 Wow! As the author of the article in question, it's amazing what someone can do with my words when they are taken completely out of context and moved around to suit a specific narrative. I find it interesting that you didn't bother to mention that the name of the column is "A Moment That Changed Me" and how that was the moment, but eh entirety of the article is about me discussing how wrong I was in that moment and why my reacting to someone in such a completely unacceptable fashion made me realize that I was the one who needed to change and did so. You fail to mention that it was a very human and vulnerable moment. I had been fat my whole life. I didn't realize I had been discriminated against until I no longer was. Yeah, it was heart-breaking. I thought people were wonderful all along. To find out that some were not hurt badly. I'm not sure I understand why that is so hard for you to comprehend. Have you never had a moment where due to your own personal stuff you lashed out at someone who didn't deserve it? And what is it about that notion that bothers you so much? Is it that I admitted it or regretted it? - Listen, the world treats fat people like crap in general, that just is. I try to speak out about it, not against it, just about it. I don't want another girl to have to go through that. I don't want another stranger to get yelled at like that. What is so terrible about that? - Either way, thanks so much for writing about it. The additional exposure caused by this kind of backlash has reached hundreds of women who have reached out to me with their own personal stories and with gratitude for giving them a voice where they felt like they had none. And for that, I am truly thankful.

Posted by: Stacie Huckeba at February 25, 2017 02:30 PM (5x9zo)

578 I have been morbidly obese for years and men hold the door open for me all the time. I smile and thank them. When I reach the door first, I open it, which usually embarrasses men, but they never fail to acknowledge me with a smile and a "thank you." If it's a close call, they will rush to get there first, and I graciously allow them to do so. I don't know in what sort of barbaric urban wasteland this woman lives, but polite men are polite no matter how unappealingly fat a woman happens to be. (I had a few decades in my youth when I was quite pretty and had a killer figure, so I have a good baseline for comparison.) (And I was fat before I was old, so it's not just a help-the-elderly thing, either. Men were still polite when I was middle-aged and fat.) Stop second-guessing everyone's motives. Maybe you walked around with a "don't f-ck with me" scowl when you were fat. We're not all jolly.
