I wonder if the clinton shadow junta will put the kibosh on this line of thinking, given the CGI/clinton cartel history of selling tech to the chinese, selling uranium to the russians, and taking money from anyone or anything that moved in exchange for "I gotcher back" IOUs. Yes, it's debatable how much juice they have left since zombie ben franklin took the pipe in November, but I still think they have a fair bit of it. It's sucked since the founding. It's only actually worked once at the presidential level and probably shouldn't have at the time (the little I've read of Johnson indicates that he got railroaded), and it's done nothing to reign in unconstitutional power grabs. That reminds me of the probably apocryphal story of a fellow who bought a barometer one day in 1933 and, when he got it home, it was as low as could be and no amount of shaking would move the needle. The barometer insisted a hurricane was on the way. So the fellow took the barometer back to the shop and asked for a refund. When he got home, the hurricane had blown his house away. Market is bubble as I see it, even though Trump is doing pro-market stuff. But I never thought they could go zero interest and QE for so long, and have been wrong for 8 years plus on that. You could sell half, or keep raising your mental sell signal (draw a trend line, when it breaks below, stick to plan and sell). With inflated currency, house debt not so bad, unless you are overextended in an inflated RE market. But the peace of no debt has value as well. David is one of my favorite artists from that period. He reminds me of the earlier Venetian school because it is full of color and life, realistic, rich detail, sometimes a little over the top but captivating for the viewer. Even in his straight portraits there is a feel of immediacy, of the moment (just the right moment) in the poses; less staged and more casual and revealing. I like the glance Lavoisier gives his wife in the painting above. It is very appealing.
According to Wiki, he was a bit of a curmudgeon but not without humor. His painting of Eros and Psyche has a smirking Eros rising from the bed while Psyche is asleep and looking VERY satisfied. Thanks, CBD, as always for these wonderful and intriguing art threads. Posted by: JTB at February 24, 2017 10:25 AM (V+03K) Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 24, 2017 10:25 AM (fDdVG) 208

I don't think we'll see a president go through impeachment for at least a couple of generations for 2 reasons:
Here's why I think you will ... 1 - We haven't seen a President with less support from his own party. 2 - We haven't seen a Federal Govt more emboldened. There are significant portions of the GOP that want Trump gone. They'll give up the White House if necessary. They'll give up House and Senate majorities if necessary. Trump will face a primary challenge in 2020 ... and I'm sure there are plenty of GOP players that would like to move on him sooner than that ... with evidence cheerfully supplied by threatened Federal Agencies ... all covered by a deeply concerned media. The GOP Congress recognizes, I think, that as long as he stays within those bounds any attempt to act against him will result in their being murdered on the steps of their office. Maybe literally so. Any move to act against Trump absent clear evidence of a serious crime on his part destroys the GOP and maybe kills people. Period. Posted by: JEM at February 24, 2017 10:43 AM (TppKb) 283

I'm going to be quite direct here. You need to go for some medication for depression and therapy. If you cannot afford t, you know how to contact me and with your permission will set up a go fund me thing or something. I realize this being without a job is very depressing and disheartening, but every day you're one here you post more dire sounding messages. NOBODY here wants to go what we went through with the fellow (Jofftey) who took his own life, and neither do the four children/teens who are closest to you. Too bad our current crop of utopians haven't the humility to learn anything from the French Revolution: those committed to creating said utopia invariably create Hell-on-earth.
The Jacobins and the Communists both thought, "We can create utopia based on rational principles, even if it means we must kill all regressives responsible for human misery up to this point". But our current crop? They are naive imbeciles. What do we make of rabid antitrumpers (including suburban soccer moms) whose main cause is that they want to import terrorists and criminals in here? What do we make of Merkel? "Let us passively let ourselves be invaded by barbarian hordes so that we can be raped and subjugated and have all our progressive values shot to hell". Wait. So the thought is to Repeal Obamacare without a replacement thereby putting the monkey on Republicans backs? In other words repeat the mistake of Democrats by coming up with a one party solution ?
Repeal and replace is a more sound strategy. Health care provision is an issue both Democrats and Republicans wanted to solve before Democrats stramtolled everyone with their big government plan. Now Obama has coerced millions into its grasp. You need to be skillful about how that's is done lest you own the resulting disaster. None of the previous bills were written with the idea Republicans would author the replacement. Should they get off their asses and get it done? Yeah but it needs to be done thoughtfully and with planning. Posted by: Marcus T at February 24, 2017 11:12 AM (F5sg8) 404

The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. When the wife and I were in college together (night) one class I remember her taking was public speaking. She's very, very good. She got an A+ -- perfect score. But she always has a 3 X 5 card of points. Structure. I like structure. When Trump says, 'in wrapping up' then proceeds to continue for another 15 minutes I grit my teeth every minute afterwards. THEN figure out how to improve the system. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at February 24, 2017 11:14 AM (X52ZZ) You have entire hospital systems that have been reconfigured to the Obamacare model of insurance reimbursement. Since Obamacare was passed and then renamed by the Supreme Court, many regional hospital systems closed and were bought or absorbed into large hospital systems. Rural hospital and physicians have been decimated and forced to join these megasystems to survive. Almost all the insurance companies that were involved in the exchanges have left the system, leaving only one company in each region that has total control of the market. 21 States expanded their Medicaid pool based off of money via the Obamacare bill promised to them by the Feds. The entire insurance industry has been calibrated to charge premiums, deductibles, etc. based off of mandates of coverage, including coverage for preexisting conditions. Hospitals are charging five times what they used to charge so they can cover those who still have no insurance, and who are subsidized, but whose insurance still doesn't cover fully. One of the two women suspected of involvement in the poisoning vomited in police custody and was also suffering the effects of VX, which is only used in chemical warfare, the inspector general, Khalid Abu Bakar, said. The findings follow a preliminary analysis of swabs taken from the face and eyes of the half-brother of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un. More items linked to the attack at Kuala Lumpur airport were still being analysed, police said. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks. Now worse than Hitler! at February 24, 2017 11:42 AM (Nwg0u) 520

At the risk of being willowed. Healthcare is so full of perverse incentives it should be burned to the ground. One minor example, my annual physical now includes smoking cessation counselling. That line item is $25.
Doctor: Are you still smoking? Me: Ayup Doctor: You should quit. Me: Ayup Doctor checks off box on Ipad and moves on. My wife was declared borderline diabetic. They put her on medication and she had to go back a number of times to modulate dosage. Four or five times in 2 or 3 months and each time smoking cessation counselling. I called to complain and the nurse said, don't worry about it, you don't pay for that. Note there was no defense of the charge. Insurance company said doctor fee $25, negotiated fee $12.50, insurance pays 100% This year another change, doctor has his ipad, but now a girl rolls in a table and she has a laptop. Doctor says that is necessary to help him fill in required forms. Posted by: The Real Bruce at February 24, 2017 12:10 PM (Qr8dA) 566

514 I've known a few wiccans, and while they were odd, they were the kind of sweet and likable odd. Like girls who wear cat ears and meow instead of saying hello. Strange, but harmless. I feel bad for them, because they are so misled and confused about life, particularly in this case.
Magic doesn't work. If it did, wiccans wouldn't live in a trailer and eat on food stamps. * * The lone Wiccan member of my writing group had a good job in computers, and was older, married, childfree, and more settled. Surprised me no end when she came out as a Cankles supporter ("She's clearly the most qualified candidate!!!", e.g.), and completely dropped the group when it became obvious that most of us were Trump people (and 1 BernieBro). Lavoisier was one of the great geniuses of the past thousand years, but he was killed for applying that genius to collecting taces, particularly the gabelle or salt tax. This tax was so extortionate that in some places it was 1971% (one thousand nine hundred and seventy one percent) people were fined for not consuming enough salt and the firm employed its own army which had the right, and regularly exercised it, to search and even sieze the movable sort all non noble property in the country.
Lavoisier work made this system even more efficient and extractive than it had been previously. One of the problems with the label conservative is that I think a lot more of us here would be with the revolution, even with the sans culottes, than against it. We believe in the equality of mankind, the abolition of special privileges, love of country over class, the right to hunt, etc... Read the declaration of the rights of man: http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/rightsof.asp Article 3 is the only one I think would be a deal breaker and I think the US right is far closer to this than the left, after all it privileges the nation over other nations. It is the Democrats who are the party that has turned Alexander Hamilton promoter of the sedition act and the unchallenged villain of Shays rebellion into a sort of God.
