Portrait of Lady Diana Manners
Sir James Jebusa Shannon

This is an interesting combination of technique and...um...lack of technique. Or maybe he just got distracted and decided not to finish.

28 That's the kind of willowy English beauty I like.

And no wonder, as Lady Diana was, prior to WWI, considered the most beautiful woman in England.

Her son is the historian John Julius Norwich, most famous for a 3-volume history of Byzantium, though I enjoyed his history of the papacy, Absolute Monarchs.

64 Interesting approach: the skin areas of a lovely young woman are very nice and certainly compliments her. The rest, including the clothes and background are smudgy (if that's a word). I suppose that could be a way to focus attention on the girl but I suspect that is just his technique.

I looked at a couple of his other paintings and, frankly, they look like sketches rather than finished works. The best one I saw was his self portrait.

And he has no appreciation of early morning straight lines and urban colors.

The latest from the gal of "No to fascism."

There is this lie being taught, that somehow Europe didn't really know what Hitler was about.
That if only the people had been told the truth, there would have been a massive resistance and uprising against him.

It's a lie spread by the leftists to protect the real truth: The world did know exactly what Hitler was about--and the leftists protected him because they agreed with him.

But, it's no use trying to teach actual history to these types.

And it's further no use explaining that she is (again) on the side of the fascists today; that she is on the side of the moslums that are doing the killing and murdering over religion, not the side trying to stop it.

88 Steve Phillips (who? I don't know) wrote an article that was pushing the Democratic Party to go further left in The New York Times which I read yesterday.

The argument was that whites are lost to the Democratic Party, and minorities are growing faster anyway. Proof was the massive Clinton victories in California and New York.

Of course, there are 2 big problems with this:

1) If the Democratic Party further abandons the white vote, the white vote will continue to coalesce around the Republican Party pushing the eventual minority vote takeover of the federal government further out into the future.

and

2) It seemed to be operating on an assumption that voting patterns are set for minorities and that a more leftward party platform will appeal to minorities at the same rate as what the Democrats are offering now (don't laugh).

I say that we welcome such thinking. Perhaps we should take to social media and proclaim to the leftist citizens of this great country that the only way the Democratic Party will ever win us back is with Keith Ellison as head of the DNC.

What can we do as individuals to get that education to the next generation of Americans?

Well, hopefully with Betsy DeVos in charge of the Department of Education we can expect to see more local control over education in the near future. What we could do in such an environment is to get onto local school boards and push for a course, taught in middle/high school, about the rise of fascism in Europe.

Heck, even Princess Di was less attractive than two or three similarly-aged women in every Sunday morning church service. That's part of Hollywood's problem right now. They are a very large business, but they're very much appealing to only one side.

Back when Hollywood was able to control their stars, they did allow some minor politicking, but the overall appeal of the industry's product was very much an overt appeal to all of Americans to get as many Americans into theaters as possible.

The fact that they're lost all sight of this is just making it easier for Republicans to say "Fuck it" and start to focus punitive measures at Hollywood directly. It really should have started a decade ago, but Republicans won't take it forever. I see no signs of Hollywood slowing down either.

I do look forward to the DOJ and the IRS deciding that it's worthwhile to look into Hollywood's accounting books in August of 2021 after they go all out...again.

They still believe that book "Emerging Democrat Majority" or whatever it was called, is more truth than the Bible.

But, it is built on three assumptions (and I've a hard rule: Any time you have more than two assumptions in your theory--you're theory is crap and will fall apart):

1) Minorities will continue to grow (never mind that every single modern country across all ethnic groups sees populations plateau at a point; "The Population Bomb" has been proven over and over to be false in nearly every respect.)

2) That minorities will continue to vote for Democrats in the same or increasing percentages. (never mind that less than 50 years ago, blacks were a solid R voting block; that Hispanics in TX and other states are not monolithic in their voting patterns; that Obama was an aberration not the norm.)

3) That whites will continue to split their vote roughly equal between D and R.

The last one was the most dangerous lie they've told themselves. That the residual memory of "being for the working man" would be enough to keep the working white vote for the Dems even as they've spent the last 40 years pursuing policies directly opposed to their interests. That whites wouldn't notice how well racial solidarity was working for the minorities and would never engage in racial solidarity of their own.

Nope. We have duly elected representatives who institute laws, and a president that enforces them. We have a civic duty to pay. That is different from a moral duty, though.

The conflation of the two is bad.

Now, if the priest wanted to go on about how the administrative state is too large and no longer reflects the will of the people, therefore we have a moral AND civic duty to resist it at every turn, then I'd be more open to that argument.

The Roman Catholic Church has about a billion members.

There's not a lot of uniformity in opinion about how to apply God's teachings amongst that billion, despite the centralized structure of the Church.

Also, Liberation Theology infected certain portions of the Church, and, like all leftist/statist thinking, won't really die.

Plus Francis really does have a background in the Liberation Theology which colors and suffuses everything he says and does, even if he has denounced it.

I'm sure she practiced it in front of a mirror a lot. To be fair I prefer it to the selfie duck-face of today.

203 169 The last one was the most dangerous lie they've told themselves.

Yup. And on top of it, the pattern of movement of these new minority voters (when they do actually turn out to be voters, which is another flaw in their little plan) is to coalesce around in certain urban centers like Los Angeles.

They'll dominate California politics for at least a generation, but until these minorities move to Iowa, Wisconsin, or Michigan, their overall effects on federal policy are going to be limited.

235 The Roman Catholic Church has about a billion members.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at February 22, 2017 10:27 AM (EvBgT)

There is SOME uniformity... or more accurately, there was once, and now it seems, less so.

I find it hard to believe the Church will withstand the latest onslaught, and the splintering will not survive the next Pope. When he dies, the fight will be on: a return to once was, a continuation in the direction of "Liberation Theology," (aka communism), or a separation and divide.

My church steers clear of politics and focuses on the soul. We have friends who recently left their Methodist church because the pastor is a SJW and they had enough.

278 As far as that priest goes, I think Steven Crowder has the right approach. He called a bunch of liberal churches, told them he was with an agency which was relocating Syrian refugees and asked him to take some in. When they said they didn't have the facilities in the church, he said "Well, what about your homes?"

Turned out the lib ministers and priests and church ladies were not terribly willing to put 27 year old Syrians on their own living room sofas or in their guest rooms.

The left has played that game with us for years. Unless you are personally willing to adopt a baby, you have no right to be anti-abortion, I've been told. (Because I am a woman, they can't use the "You're a man, you have no right to be anti-abortion" line on me.)

So let's turn the tables. If they're not willing to put up an illegal or a refugee in their own homes they're phonies.

I don't think that's a bad plan.

I do prefer the simple 28 years with the ability to apply for one more set of 28 years. It seems easier to administrate.

Plus, if something isn't worth going through the re-application process after the first 28 years, it doesn't need to go any further.

It's the reason It's a Wonderful Life is a beloved classic, by the way. No one bothered to re-up the copyright because it was a dismal failure in its first run. It became a very cheap thing to show on television because it had no copyright, and a generation grew up with it every Christmas.

If current copyright law had applied, that movie would probably be no more than a curio that only people who really dig into studio archives would know about.

Well, that was the idea behind the constitutional structure Madison helped to develop.

Three branches of government, all jealous of their powers and trying to wrest them from the other in a perpetual tug of war ensuring that no one branch becomes too powerful. On top of that, part of the federal government is staffed by state representatives (the Senate), ensuring that there's a vertical set of checks and balances as well.

The loss of that last part (gradually over the 19th century, and then all at once at the beginning of the 20th) really undercut one part of the structure. The other part was the embrace of the administrative state by the legislature.

If we're not going to start over, those are the two places to focus our attentions the most.

If they worshiped the state, then they'd love the idea of Donald Trump using his presidential powers aggressively.

The use of the tools of his administration to increase deportations of illegal immigrants seems to be hating, not the power of the state, but the "proper use" of the power of the state. Plus, increased deportations are implicitly an increase of state power.

460 Well, hopefully with Betsy DeVos in charge of the Department of Education we can expect to see more local control over education in the near future. What we could do in such an environment is to get onto local school boards and push for a course, taught in middle/high school, about the rise of fascism in Europe.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison at February 22, 2017 10:04 AM (EvBgT

It's a start, but it has to go back to the parents to provide alternative education to their kids. You can, on a school board, demand teachers teach about the rise of fascism in Europe.
The problem?
1. Teachers themselves do not know anything about the rise of fascism in Europe. They have gone through the same public education and college education we currently complain about.
2. Try to find accurate materials to build lesson plans from. You will find the same edited, rewritten tripe in textbooks from every major manufacturer. So even if you did gold mine a teacher who was interested in teaching facts instead of feelings, they won't have any materials to work with.
This is how pervasive the left has become and how thorough they have been in both doctrination and in removal of written and oral history.

Not to mention the ACLU and other groups will be suing the school board.

It's worth fighting, but it wont be easy. And unless parents are involved in education themselves(remember, a lot of current school age parents themselves have been thoroughly indoctrinated too), the kids will continue to be taught alternative history.

You know the show "The Mindy Project"? The brother of that girl got into medical school by faking he was black

http://tinyurl.com/kqjnvnx

Why? Because the standards for black students getting into the college were lower than for an Indian.

"The data suggested that an Indian-American with my grades (3.1 GPA) and test scores (31 MCAT) was unlikely to gain admission to medical school, but an African-American with the same grades and test scores had a high probability of admission."

He then goes into how people were all raaaaaaaaacist toward him because they thought he was black yadda yadda, but the larger point is painfully true: lower standards because white administrators think blacks can't make it without their help.

494 485 It was a dereliction of state power to neglect the enforcement of long-standing laws. Enforcing laws on the books is not an expansion of state power--its a resumption.

If voters don't like those laws, they can vote accordingly. Democrats controlled all branches in 2010, but didn't repeal those laws. But now they want to grandstand.

It's an interesting thought experiment: would there have been a NeverCruz movement?

I'm pretty sure the same folks that continue to object to Trump, based on their nearly constant severely conservative principles, except for when they prefer the tyrannical rule of the Deep State, would likely have opposed Cruz in some fashion as well.

Maybe they could have kept their heads down and let the MSM take on Cruz--I was a Cruz guy, but I just can't imagine him having the success against the media Trump is having. Ergo, the NeverTrumpers could have kept their fig leaves firmly stapled in place, because it wouldn't have been necessary for them to join the battle.

I would thnk a guy named "Reich" would want to cool it with the oo-jay talk.

A local Catholic priest said "nowhere in the Bible does it say you must support a government you disagree with."

The flaw here is that the priest is referencing personal opinion rather than God's will. The Bible tells us we obey God, and as long as he is not in violation of God's will, the leaders God put over us. In whatever system of government that may be. But the key here is God not ourselves.

It doesn't matter if we like what a government is saying or not. What matters is if God does, and a priest should know and say that, if they truly are a Christian.

I've attended several conservative, predominantly white evangelical churches, and I have never heard politics preached from the pulpit. Even the topic of abortion has only ever been addressed in moral terms, with no prescriptive agenda. The cynic in me attributes that to the fact that their tax-exempt status is exposed to danger in a way that mainstream liberal churches, black, white or mixed, never give a thought to. But I can't escape the conclusion that they sincerely don't want to alienate people because of what they believe about the role of government in society. Personally, I can't imagine ever being comfortable in a church that was all up into politics, regardless of whether I agreed.

Most of them, I'd say. But they are usually part of a denomination that leans toward politics.

And yet, some of those people don't have a problem with islam.

I don't think they are part of the same subset. There are a lot of groups on the NeverTrump train, but they each have their own reasons. That's why Hillary Clinton and Bill Kristol and Bill Burr can all stand together and say "not this guy."

Some are elitists. Some are part of the machine. Some are just partisan. Some are snobs. Some are social conservatives repelled by Trump's character. You can't attribute the ideas and intent of one to the other necessarily.

We've had 8 years of a very not conservative admin, and 8 before that of squish at best, and these folks held their ground, fought the good fight. But one desperately hopes that the basic idea is false. Panic about enforcement is exactly what is needed. And it needs to be specifically cultivated among corporate abusers of illegal labor, and select states and cities, where "enforcement" measures take many forms and will take some time to develop.

552 Those who "cannot bring themselves to support the man" (Trump) are unserious at best, more likely not very bright (in a practical political sense) or well informed. Or, obviously, they oppose the direction of his policies.

People can do whatever they damn please.

Opposing desperately needed change not - ostensibly - because one "opposes" it, but because of stupid aesthetic qualms or equally empty reasons, screams all sorts of things, excluding seriousness or good judgement.

553 The expression on the face is killer, I like it. The rest of the details feel scumbled, which I kind of like, seeing this in person would probably be key.

That silver though... pulls focus from the girl pretty badly. Unless it was crucial to include her favorite survival heat deflection poncho, another material should have been used. But impressive skill in rendering the material.

554 Barrel's going to have indigestion for the rest of the week after this one.

1. Annoying loud music. Why not some narration telling us how it works?

2. Zero margin of safety. If one of the four motors fails, you are toast. I doubt auto-rotation will save your ass, like it can in a helicopter.

Martin-Baker seating should ease your concerns. As long as it's outdoors.

I'm impressed.

560 So the old bat was a cute little girl, I guess it was sort of obvious when you look at her though...good bones on that one as they say. I suspect the artist was never given a chance to finish, Mrs Stitch had no patience for anything more than a flash bulb.

Lady Diana Duff Cooper was the most amazing English aristocratic lady in the 20th century, the stain of illicit illegitimacy only made her more old school, but with a proper heir who cares if the Duchess wanders about.

561 "...just got distracted and decided not to finish."

Actually I like this pic a lot. Not all great art has to be Go Pro.
