Also, open thread on the Sean Spicer press conference. I'm just catching up with it (I had the DVR on delay). Apologies again. I think this is going to be a half day. Maybe a quarter day. I'm putting together a (very small) home gym and I had to get rid of bookcases to fit it all in my very small apartment. And then, to store those books, I had to put in a bunch of (high) wall shelves. I honestly don't know how you people who work manual labor jobs do it. Pretty much every muscle in my body hurts, especially the back from the constant bending over and stooping. And standing on ladders with my forehead pressed firmly against a shelf to hold it in place while I use my one hand to hold a screw and the other to hold the screwdriver. By the way, I thought I had a drill that could drill (and drive screws) through studs. I did not. What I had was two pieces of shit which, combined together, made up a collection of shit that took up more space in my tool drawer than a single piece of shit would. The things could not even push past the first eighth inch of drywall. The easiest part. It's like, "Hey, thanks Tool. Thanks for getting me past that first easy eighth inch. I'll take it the rest of the way, now that you've gotten me off to such a swell start. You take a well-earned break, and get back to napping in that drawer. I'll power through the rest of this with my forearms and my dinky little ratchet." I literally was just pushing on the drill to make a small starter hole for the screw, like it was a poorly-balanced nail with a pistol grip. It's a poor workman who blames his tools, but I think you can all agree I am a poor workman in the first place, and these really are shitty, shitty tools. I ordered a drill/driver that I hope will be better even though I'm done with the shelves (for now). I just don't ever want to have to touch these two pieces of shit again. I actually want to have a ceremony where I turn their backs on them and then push them past my back in a Walk of Shame, out to the garbage. I might piss on them too. Really. I might take them into the bathroom, piss on them (into the toilet), wrap them in a garbage bag and just let them smell their failure. By the way, now that I've put up six shelves, I want to put up shelves everywhere. Everywhere I look I see walls that could be filled with shelves, high as the eye can see. Anyway, I'm physically and mentally drained. Yes, I'm a pussy. This is not really a question. But being on step-ladders all day and hand-screwing into studs is tough for someone who, as you know, is rapidly approaching 29 years old. On the plus side, it turned into a genuine workout day. I'll put up crap here and there and do a GAINZZZ thread. But mostly I'm going to put up headlines, open threads, whining about my shoulders, and bragging about my Put Shelves On Everything design aesthetic. BTW, if anyone wants to call me Shelvey, I'd like that just fine.Comments

i had gone to Home Depot earlier to get some stuff I needed (drywall anchors, laser level, etc.) *but* I thought I had the drill part taken care of.
By the time I realized the drills were atrocious, it was kinda late. Actually I probably still could have gone but I am so lazy that I often avoid work, even if that work would save me work down the line. This is what lazy people do, and why they are always scrambling to get poor results.

I have no idea what your situation is but shelves are not that big a deal. That said, any kind of installation can be a big pain in the ass if you lack the right tools and materials and don't really know the procedures. If you have a base knowledge of what you need to do and the tools at hand, it's pretty straight forward. That said, an extra set of hands does help.

If you had posted that you needed a new drill and then waited for the response, you probably would have gotten a lot of good recommendations. Perhaps from people who don't have drawers full of their previous drilling failures.
Not from me though; I think I have around six drills tucked away in various spots, all with assorted shortcomings.

I've got a small Dewalt driller, screwdriver that I bought 4 or 5 years ago. Built a desk, shelves, and various other furniture items, unbuilt it all and moved it two more times, and performed a wide range of home repair and improvement projects over 4 or 5 years. Just used it again yesterday for a small project. Still have never charged the battery or used the spare it comes with. It will twist your nuts off through drywall and studs.

Shelves. Last set I put up (small cabinet from Ikea), to my amazement, they had holes in the wrong places. I actually spent time confirming this, as it seemed so unlikely. Anyway, ended up drilling my own holes, apparently perfectly.

Depends on the type of shelf. If you're doing a shit ton more shelves, I also recommend and attachment for your drill that holds the screw in place on the drill. The make some that flip over to a drill bit too if you're pr drilling holes. They're about a buck or so. Leaves your hands free and saves fingers for more inept handy people.

That's how I get along. The impact driver (with chuck) actually does a good job drilling small holes in masonry. (say, 3/8 or smaller) Acts somewhat like a hammer drill.

I understand that feeling. My brakes needed changing and I figured now's a good time to do them myself, since I had a full day of nothing until class that evening. I had the tire off and discovered that one of the bolts was held in by a cotter pin that the idiot had put in backwards, and then bent to secure it. When I tried to remove it the pin broke. On a side note, it's two miles from my house to the nearest auto parts store...

I don't think so. I could push it Up or Down. Seems to me Up is the natural position for "In." The other one used Up for screwing in and down for screwing out.

Place your hand or fingers around the chuck (important note, chuck, not the drill bit). Lightly press trigger. If rotation is clockwise, you're going in. If not, flip the switch.
Logic is rarely consistent on drill switches... and often socket wrenches.
What you described really does sound like an indicatior of drilling the wrong direction. Probably a shitty tool also, but you can push screws into drywall with your fingers. (Or your head, if not being used for shelf holding).

Most cordless hammer drills can be set to perform as a regular drill. The 'hammer' is just additional capability, available when needed and deserved.

You can use a nail to make a pilot hole for the screw. A drill is easier, but a nail will work in a pinch.

it was an ikea one it had these two tabs on either side and when you pushed one tab in, it went in, and when you pushed the other one out, it went out.
I had it in a sort of intermediate position which was... actually in the out position.

I live in an old part of town and homes here can date back to the late 19th century. Sometimes people get in over their heads on "remodels".
Two different times in the last 10 years, homeowners doing remodeling removed enough of the load bearing walls that their homes fell down. One of those fell on the next door neighbor's house, making part of that house fall down too.

It's also that what I thought would take a couple of hours wound up taking from six to 12:30 at night, with much, much, MUCH more straining than I imagined (or that was actually needed).
With actual pilot holes I could have been in and done with those stud screws like ten minutes each.

I'll start:
My FIL was doing some electrical work around the house and asked me to go down and shut off the breaker for the area he was working on. I went down and turned one off and the area's power was off so I told him to get started.
I flipped the one that said "200." Apparently that is the whole house one.
Definitely got called an idiot for that.

It depends on the size of the drill bit. If you are drilling into something with limited elasticity, like century old hardwood studs or plastic, you drill the pilot hole the size of the inside of the threads, if you know what I mean. If it's spongy like a pine 2x4, then even a pencil lead thick is fine.

Got a new dishwasher a couple of weeks ago, and the tap from the hot-water line was a different type than the old one used. Same brand of dishwasher, too. Progress.
"Nertz", say I, "I'm going to sweat on a screw fitting to this hyar copper pipe so that the next time I need to change this thing I can just wrench it on and off."
So this is what I do.
And when the dishwasher install guy (upgrade to 5 year warranty if they install it, so worth the dough) turns on the new hose shut-off, it leaks like a sieve from the packing nut. Which no amount of tightening of said nut would stop.
At least I didn't have to sweat on the replacement, so I had that going for me.

You can use it to drive in screws into about anything or as just a powered screwdriver.
Well worth the $120 or so.
Black& Decker is pretty much junk these days.
If I was starting my power tools from scratch, I would probably get the cordless Milwaukee "fuel" line. I have older DeWalt 18v.
But I would still want the small Bosch driver.

in my limited defense, the driver was also a piece of shit that didn't work (and that WAS in the correct position).
So you can understand, maybe, my conclusion that neither worked and both were way underpowered and maybe power cord just wasn't delivering juice. ( I tried swapping power cords, thinking maybe I'd switched them up and they just weren't really charging like the should. But that wasn't it.)
Also, I wasn't wearing reading glasses, and I really could not even see the marking on this doohickey with unaided eyes.

THIS! I don't use power tools frequently. It seems like every-time I buy one with rechargeable batteries, I use it once, then next time I go to use it the battery has died of overcharging, undercharging, neglect, loneliness, smallpox or something.
I have a cheap corded B&D I bought in the late '70s that still works, although I've had to replace the cord a couple of times.

I put a dusk to dawn porch light on upside down. It keeps coming on, then going off. Need to flip it to where the light sensor is on top. The lights come on, it senses it's light out, lights go off. If the sensor it above the lights, it shouldn't turn off until it's daylight out.

By the way, don't use a hammer drill in the floor slab on any floor other than the ground floor. Unless you like cleaning up the spalled concrete off of some poor bastard's desk.
Didn't happen to me (seriously), but years ago I had to go through a day-long training course in order to be certified access to a major wireless carrier's switch centers. The instructor LITERALLY took 1/3 of the course talking about the dangers of using hammer drills to install equipment racks on 2nd floor or above.

This is so true, I just assumed it was what Ace's problem was. For the first 15 years or so of battery tools, this was standard, and I received any number of them as gifts. The kind of gifts that really make you remember the giver.
First battery version of the World-Famous Rotary Tool was just like that. It had so thoroughly soured their reputation at our place, I feel grateful for the temper tantrum that caused me to hurl that li'l sumbitch, and go buy the cheaper real-power one, which has served faithfully for many years.
I would, however, make sure the battery pack is fully disengaged and properly recycled before pissing on the tool. I know, that's just me.

I would be very leery of anything electrical from Horror Fright.
Out of morbid curiosity, I've taken apart a couple of dead power tools of theirs that friends tossed to me when I was making an e-waste run.
Basically they'll take a tool for which a Chinese firm has a branded contract manufacturing run for a Western company, then alter the name and the external cosmetics, and substitute internals that failed quality control for the first batch.
They do have occasional decent things, but it requires eternal vigilance and a strict eye to detail to be able to pick them out of the reeking swamp.

My rule on HF:
I don't buy their cordless stuff.
Much of the corded stuff is VERY good for the money but sometimes a bit low-tech on the switchgear and ergonomics.
Some of the hand tools are top-grade, some are just so-so, a few are junk, they're all much better than they were a few years back.
And of course the place smells like Chinese grease and rubber when you walk in the door.
Let's see, I've got about half a dozen HF ratchet handles, maybe 30 various sorts of ratcheting box wrenches, maybe the same number of conventional combination wrenches, various screwdrivers, couple dead-blow hammers, about half a dozen 4.5in angle grinders, an SDS hammer-drill, a couple floor jacks, a transmission jack, an oil drain, a couple hose reels, a couple cord reels, give me half an hour and I'm sure I could think of a lot more...

I read a guy on the internet (always a bad way to start a sentence) saying "Don't use a longer screw than you actually need," and I thought he recommended 1 1/4 inch screws for stud.
If the drywall is 3/8 - 5-8, that's still.... well I don't know. I took this guy's advice because the two inch screws were impossible.
But I can pull those out and replace them.
The drywall anchors I just used the screws that came with them. The heavier anchors were toggle type with screws like two and a quarter inches. Pretty long.

Fortunately, hasn't happened to me, but I can only imagine the "ouchie" that occurs when a loaded 260lb barbell falls onto your soft floor (or toe).

My dad, it usually starts this way, decided that we needed to get rid of a couple old chicken coops on the farm to make room for a new barn. These things were at least 80 years old and the wood was dry as a bone and the roofs were covered with multiple levels of tar paper.
So we tore them down and made pile of the old wood the approximate size of a school bus out in a field near a bunch of dead apple trees in order to burn it all up. Because that seemed like a great idea.
We were armed with a couple racks, a shovel and a garden house which feed off our well and had the pressure of an old man with prostate issues. My dad was concerned it wouldn't burn well so he doused the entire thing with a five gallon can of gasoline. I think you can see where this is heading.
Thing went up like the Olympic torch and threatened to get out of control quickly. My mother and sister high tailed it for the house to hide while a ranger in a fire tower 10 miles away called in the blaze. The fire department arrived to find me covered in soot with my eyebrows burned off peeing on the raging blaze with my pathetic garden hose and battling away with my trusty rake.
They stayed for a while to taunt us and then got bored and left. At about 9pm that evening it looked like we had it under control when I noticed smoke pouring out of a whole in a dead apple tree about 50 feet away. The fire was so hot it set dead roots under ground on fire.
So on came the chain saws and about 2 in the morning we finally had the thing put out. When I started to give my dad shit about what the hell was he thinking I got the usual "What? It's cleared isn't it?"
Only took about 3 months for eyebrows to grow back. Thanks dad.

I have a few old 18 v Dewalts (a couple of drills, hammer drill, 2 chargers and a bunch of batteries) that get the job done pretty well.
The tools are all fine, the battery life is not in the best shape but I used them commercially for a few years and have used them as a home owner for 5+ years, and batteries just dont last that long.
I would recommend getting tools like that though, ace. Home owner-grade, but on the higher end. The little 14 volt black and decker POS's are not worth the money. You'll be replacing them way too often to make it worth it.

.The newer ones that don't come from the dollar store don't have those issues anymore. I have had the Ryobi 18v system from Home Depot for about 8 years now and I have had zero battery issues.
I have a drill, 8 inch chop saw, tire inflator, weed wacker, mini chain saw, area light and spot light that work from the same battery. I have never had to toss a battery out in 8 years.

On the thing I was using as a driver, the side-to-side toggle was the safety, which, obviously, either made the tool active or inactive.
On this Ikea one, the side to side toggle was the reverse/forward. I thought it was the safety, because... well, same position, pretty much, same side-to-side action.

If you mean how long should screws be to hold up a book shelf (assuming you are screwing in to wood studs), the answer is long enough to get a good bite of the stud. 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 screws are usually pretty sufficient for most stuff I do. I guess it depends on what screws you're using and how much weight will be on them.
Usually book shelves come with screws, I would just screw those screws all the way in and call it a day.

I have almost as big a hardon for Dewalt 20v stuff as I do for Trump's cabinet picks.
The 1/2in drill, the 3/8 angle drill, the angled-motor recip saw, the 1/2in impact wrench, the hedge trimmer, the 20V-battery-to-USB adapter, couple other things I can't recall. Don't have the angle grinder (yet, that's next) or the weedwacker or portable blower (have B&D units that's adequate for now).

I tore the chimney out of my two story 1927 era house in Minneapolis.
I did this by knocking bricks off and working my way down through the house, sitting on top of the chimney.
got stuck at one point.
Ended up creating a blockage, as I was dropping the bricks down into the basement.
I managed to clear the blockage, dramatically, which was the functional equivalent of a masonry dust dirty bomb in my house.
All if this is fine and good, except that my wife went into labor in the middle of that day with my second child. So there was this period of my wife hollering at me that the contractions were getting closer, and me saying I can't go to the hospital with the roof wide open and covered in dust.
So she went to bed and the contractions stopped. And I completely trashed her completely clean house (she had already been "nesting") and the baby came three weeks late, at over 9 pounds.
I'm still married to her, but talk about the grace of God.

I happen to support what he's doing here entirely, but I think he was done in a clumsy way that gave his critics an opening.
He's already had to reverse himself on the Green card stuff, which should have been pretty straightforward not to go after and would give the judges something to pounce on.

You're just digging deeper. There are no "standard" controls on power tools. They mostly have the same functions, and there are often significant similarities, but details can vary significantly between different makes and models.
They're sort of like semi-auto pistols in that regard.

We just lit our burn pile and it was too wet underneath from the rain. The fire dept came and we had to put it out because there was too much smoke.
10,000 gallons and five hours and it was out. Half of the pile burned.
I could see the smoke from 15 miles away.

There are special drill bit kits to do that. They drill the head of the screw and then have another bit that will catch the new drilled head and allow you unscrew it. They cost about 8 or 10 dollars at the box stores.

Sorry, just being silly. I had to replace an GFCI outlet in the guest bathroom. I must have run between there and the circuit board a dozen times to ensure that I had properly shut off the correct breaker switch. Electricity scares the hell out of me, but I have done the outlet and I changed out the elements in my water heater.

depends on what/where/aesthetics/criticality.
If you're screwing into wood and it's not going to be visible or aesthetically important, you cut it off flush and put in another (better) one next to it. I use Spax torx-drive for everything that really matters.
If it matters aesthetically, maybe you take the whole thing apart gently, pulling the screw out through the existing hole, twist it out with vise-grips, then reassemble. Not a Japanese furniture-grade repair, but good enough.
If you're screwing into a threaded hole in metal, you curse. Then you start figuring out how to either (a) get vise-grips onto the stub, possibly involving removing the part you're attaching first (b) plug-welding a nut onto the stub, soaking the whole thing in penetrating oil for three days, then gently wiggling it out, or (c) knocking it flush with the hole and drilling it out (no cheap drill bits, buy Norseman drill bits, US-made and worth every fucking penny.)

The best indoor-use DIY job ladder is a Warner type3 aluminum 4 foot double-strapped blue top. It's super lightweight but sturdy as heck. I've never wore one out. Have vaulted / coffered ceilings? Same type3 ladder but an eight-footer.

Depends how badly its stripped.
Sometimes the stripping is one way, so you can still back it out manually by hand with a conventional screwdriver.
If not completely bowled out you may be able to drill a little bit into the head then get a Phillips to "bite" once you've deepened the opening a bi. I've had luck with that before.
If the head is proud you can try grabbing it with a pair of pliers. If a teeny bit proud you can cut a notch into it with a hacksaw blade and then use a flat bladed screwdriver to back it out. And there are other tricks:

Which is a theme in my life lately.
My Black and Decker drill was useless and I ended up doing the same thing, except wtih 2" screws. It was effing endless and horrible because the drill kept dying. I turned into Scarlett O'Hara screaming "as God as my witness, I will only used corded drills from now on."
About a week or so ago, I decided to install a light in my drop ceiling (part one of the Drop Ceiling Saga I told yesterday on the ONT). I let the drill charge overnight and voila!
No problem. Drilled into wood ceiling beams without an issue.
Moral: make sure the drill is adequately charged, and then charge a few hours more.
Also, if you really want to go all in with tools, I know a lot of people who like Dewalt, however, they are on the heavy side but I believe they have a lot of torque.

STORY TIME!
Background: An extraordinarily sweet and nice elderly church friend works with this girl. They work at a funeral parlor. I had been sick for a very good long while but was finally back to normal and able to do normal things again. Nice amazing church lady comes to me one day saying she knows this really sweet girl and that the two of us should go on a date.
I say, yeah sounds good why not. Get funeral girl's number. Then I have the greatest idea ever, I ask the horde about how to proceed with contacting funeral girl who I have never seen or heard from before.
The general consensus was 1.) Don't call her, you have no idea if funeral girl even gave permission for her number to be given out. 2.) It is highly likely you will come off as a creep no matter what, but most definitely make sure the mutual friend brings you both together at a location and 3.) Absolutely go through with it no matter how hilariously horrible it turns out and bring back the stories.
(Ok maybe I'm paraphrasing a bit there.)
So I take the horde's advice, text funeral girl and have church friend set up a place and time for the three of us to meet. Day arrives, church friend and me are there, funeral girl bails. No big loss. HOWEVER, while at this little coffee shop I get to talking with one of the girls who works there and bam, get her number and set up a date.
So cool, all is well.
Before first date with coffee girl happens, funeral girl texts me back. I'm so sorry etc etc. She still wants to meet. Ok, I have no problem with that. End up going on two dates.
Both go very well.
Now what?
Seeing as they were just first dates (and granted I had been out of life for some time) I figured hey, what's the harm in going on two second dates. Besides, odds are one or both end up going south.
Yeah that didn't happen.
Third date time. Take coffee girl to an off broadway play in nyc that was a lot of fun. I mention this only because I ended up going back to said play with some cousins for a night out. While there the lot of us cousins end up chatting with one of the actors and actresses.
Guess whose number I get? (Hint: It wasn't the actor.) And no, I wasn't trying, promise.
So I'm like, yeah, this is getting a bit retarded. Never have been nor will be someone who keeps up multiple relationships or attempts at relationships.
Actress girl dates one and two go very very well. Even better than funeral and coffee girl. Decision time.
Long story short (because this is an essay already) still talk to and just friends with funeral girl, no longer talk to coffee girl and going out again tonight with actress girl.
It has been interesting to say the least. If actress girl works out I'm going to get her to join the horde.
(Apologies for length, now back to your regularly scheduled programming.)
(And before anyone asks, no, me and funeral girl did not make out in a casket.)

Depends on the shelf design. When we're talking books, I tend to over engineer, starting with the shelf itself. Can't stand bowing shelves (much less breaking shelves). 1/2 thick at least and supports no more than 3 ft apart. YMMV.
Screws? Depends. Are these the big angle bracket jobs that the bracket is as long down the wall as the shelf? Then the screws you have are more than fine. The shelves with rails like they use at stores? Same. If the wall bracket is significantly shorter than the shelf depth, I'd recommend increasing the size of screws and making sure every one of them is in a stud.

can you please rephrase the question?
If you mean how long should screws be to hold up a book shelf (assuming you are screwing in to wood studs), the answer is long enough to get a good bite of the stud. 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 screws are usually pretty sufficient for most stuff I do. I guess it depends on what screws you're using and how much weight will be on them.
I go with #8 screws. I like 2 inches in the stud itself, so add to that the thickness of the wall covering (I have lathe and plaster that is 7/8" thick) and the thickness of the shelf bracket.
Drill a pilot hole. A screw can split the stud and lower the holding power.
If your shelf bows down between supports after you load it with books, add a support.

That said, 2 years ago a friend from Mexico (Mexican citizen) was stopped coming into the US to visit me and family. She was looking to start a business in the US so had spend some time here, went back for a few weeks, and was coming back again. Nothing odd. Well within the stay limits. She got yanked out of line and held up by immigration. They took her phone, forced her to unlock it, searched her stuff, and held her for hours. The agent saw my number on her phone and called me and start d grilling and threatening me. I was polite, till he started trying to interrogate me and started with threats. I told him he needed to back the fuck off or tell me, right then, exactly what law was either broken or even in question. He STFU and she was out two minutes later... but ended up stuck in Houston overnight because there were no more flights.
The media outrageous outrage is bullshit. 109 people out of 325,000 being delayed is a vast, dramatic improvement over what's been going on for decades with citizens and non citizens being delayed.

Out here in Earthquake Country (California), no one in their right mind would install bookshelves by screwing them into the wall. Because (obviously) even a mild earthquake could jar them loose and then they'd come crashing down on your head.

And the bolting MUST be (if humanly possible) screwed directly into a support beam or 2x4 stud; otherwise, the feeble screw would just crumble right out of the stupid crumbly drywall during an actual quake and the bolting would fail and the bookcase would fall over and kill you as you fled.
Oh, how easy it would be to just cavalierly screw some bookshelves onto the wall.
And the same is true with all other furniture and appliances too. Bolt, bolt, bolt. Strep, strap, strap.
Also, NEVER put a mirror or a picture in a glass picture frame over or near your bed. Unless you want you throat cut by shards of glass in your sleep during the next 5am megaquake.

DeWalt's are great. The newer ones are quite light, and have different battery sizes, so you can optimize your weight/longevity preference.
Newer brushless tools are generally lighter on the battery, giving longer run-time.
Torque is the right word. The Dewalt I have has 3 selectable gears, so you can trade-off between RPM and torque.

"La La Land"
I enjoyed it.
And it was fun seeing a modernish musical.
The story was very much what I would imagine to be a typical type of everyday boy meets girl versus their careers sort of story.
To say more would involve spoilers.
The downside? No memorable songs and neither lead could sing or dance. But, they could move nicely and the director cut around that so it looked like they could dance.
Interesting date movie.

6 times the diameter of the screw is probably good enough, if you have the right size screw.
Add a 1/2" for the gyp board in between, or something a bit more if you have plaster and lath. Sounds like you have gyp though.
So for a 1/4" screw go for 1 1/2" into the stud.

having been told I have to put in longer screws, and wanting to check the drill, I took out one screw and tried drilling a pilot hole.
The drill failed to make any kind of distance into the stud. The tip is blunted, maybe. I'm not sure now I did have the thing on reverse (putting it back into the box, toggled side down, can push the toggle into the reverse position).
I tried hand-screwing a 2 5/8th inch screw but it was no go.
I'll have to wait for that drill/driver to see what's up.

My ideal would really be a repeal of the 17th amendment and then the 28th amendment that dictated that senators were selected by state legislatures (the Constitution, before the 17th, states that states can choose how they elect senators, but they all started that way. The days of actors being triple threats is sadly dead. This film keenly shows the loss. But if it paves the way for a new era of musicals I'd be happy. The ending was quite amazing, I liked that. The rest was meh in a charming way. Usually the most emotional scenes in a musical are, you know, sung. In this they seemed to randomly choose when to have songs, and not all of the most emotional scenes had any.

I didn't know this so I looked it up. It's either etagere (rising accent over first e, falling accent over second). I've never seen that word before, but it's plainly etage (level, floor in a building, etc.) with the ere ending, which is a dimunitive (like -ette is a diminuitive).

Judging from some other stuff I've run into since buying this house I really do suspect there is nothing in between the tile and slab, so I think I'll have lots of tedious cleanup once the existing tile is out. I'm going to put stone-looking porcelain in, but I have to find some I like that has a high COF (IIRC). What we have now is dangerous as heck. You're mostly going to pry, once you have an edge exposed. Stubborn bits get chiseled off. I'd start in the middle and work outwards.
