Tuesday Overnight Open Thread (1/10/17)

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do - and I believe that. Derek Jeter

Quote II

If you work harder than somebody else, chances are you'll beat him though he has more talent than you. Bart Starr

Quote III

Whatever your life's work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Quote IV

Society in every state is a blessing, but government, even in its best stage, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one. Thomas Paine

The past two evenings Thomas Paine has made the quotes of the day. January 9th, 1776 Thomas Paine publishes "Common Sense" a pamphlet advocating American independence.

His work still stands up today.

Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best
state is but a necessary evil in its worst state an intolerable one; for
when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries by a
government, which we might expect in a country without
government, our calamities is heightened by reflecting that we
furnish the means by which we suffer! Government, like dress, is
the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built on the
ruins of the bowers of paradise. For were the impulses of
conscience clear, uniform, and irresistibly obeyed, man would
need no other lawgiver; but that not being the case, he finds it
necessary to surrender up a part of his property to furnish means
for the protection of the rest; and this he is induced to do by the
same prudence which in every other case advises him out of two
evils to choose the least. Wherefore, security being the true design
and end of government, it unanswerably follows that whatever
form thereof appears most likely to ensure it to us, with the least
expense and greatest benefit, is preferable to all others.

Oh no, The Avian Flu is back.

The US poultry industry is on high alert after the US Department of Agriculture on Jan. 9 announced a dangerous strain of H5N2 avian influenza was discovered on a duck in Fergus County, Montana.
Word about that particular strain of bird flu is enough to trigger nightmares for many American egg farmers, who suffered more than $1 billion in losses over six months after the virus spread from migratory birds and into their flocks in 2015, killing more than 48 million hens in 223 separate outbreaks across the country. During that period, egg prices surged by as much as 31%.

"There's a sucker born every minute". Tired of being single? Have some disposable cash? Would you like the rest of society to laugh at you and think you're a dumb shit? Go ahead and marry yourself. The age of Self-Centeredness.

“A website called I Married Me is offering a DIY marriage kit for singles who want to commit to…themselves.

For $50, you get a sterling silver ring, instructions, vows, and 24 affirmation cards to remind you of your vows over time. If you cough up $230, you get a 14-karat gold ring to put on yourself.

“A roadmap to positivity, our I Married Me kit has all you need to create your own ceremony, including a self-wedding ring, vows and daily affirmation cards. A self-wedding is a symbolic ceremony–about reconnecting and staying connected with you. Wear the ring to remind you every day to love yourself.”

A Frenchman returns home for Christmas. His 4 observations of immigration and how his community changed. Of course, all change is not good.

I observed noticeable demographic and physical changes in the city where I studied (third tier city), due to recent pro-migrant stance of the government adding to the earlier problems caused by post-colonisation immigration, between my arrival (mid 2000s) to the present year.

I strolled around for a few days taking mental notes and will share now my observations, to confirm what most of us already know and what the skeptics still refuse to acknowledge. Simply put: We are being replaced. It is affecting us all and it is very real.

What are some of the biggest problems with Congress? Lust? Gluttony? Greed? Sloth? Wrath? Envy? Pride? None of these according to a recent NPR piece. Non-religious Americans remain far underrepresented in Congress.

One in five Americans is religiously unaffiliated. Yet just one of 535 members of the new Congress is.

That's what the latest data from the Pew Research Center show on the opening day of the 115th Congress. The nation's top legislative body remains far more male and white than the rest of the U.S. population as well, but religion is one of the more invisible areas where legislators in Washington simply aren't representative of the people they represent.

There are plenty of godless heathens in politics.

The ONT staff came across this map. best selling music artists in each state. Seems to me that Paul Revere and The Raiders in Idaho, is, ah, shall we say bullshit? They aren't even in the Top 50 all time best selling artists.

The ONT Musical Interlude

Celebrating his 72nd birthday today is Rod Stewart.

A year ago today we lost David Bowie.

Hope you enjoyed the 2-For Tuesday musical selections.

Supposedly the Fort Lauderdale shooter was on "radar". The problem is no one is keeping an eye on the radar.

It’s not yet known why the FBI concluded that Santiago wasn’t dangerous. He was clearly a delusional man. His relatives said that he had not been himself since 2010, when he returned from a nine-month deployment in Iraq. He’d been discharged last August by the Alaska National Guard for unspecific “unsatisfactory performance.” Whatever the FBI’s reasoning, Santiago’s name was never added to any law-enforcement watch or to the federal “no fly” list. Nor were local police able to charge him with a crime, despite having been called to his apartment on at least four occasions on complaints relating to domestic abuses of his older girlfriend, believed to have been the mother of his child.

Climate change. Global warming. Ice age. So is climate change new? Or has it happened before in history? According to Washington State University ancient people faced climate change. Was it their air conditioning or their V8 Chevrolet Suburban?

What we fail to remember sometimes though is that human beings have dealt with climate change before. Ancient civilizations had to cope with extreme weather, drought and other environmental challenges. What can we learn from the way they lived to help us in the future?

Researchers at Washington State University have built computer models to allow us to look at how ancient humans responded to climate change -- where they were successful and where they failed.

As we get closer to January 20th, the end of the Obama nightmare, report cards are being issued on his 8 years of blunder. The Military weighs in on TFG's legacy.

More than half of troops surveyed in the latest Military Times/Institute for Veterans and Military Families poll said they have an unfavorable opinion of Obama and his two-terms leading the military. About 36 percent said they approve of his job as commander in chief.

Driving a car is not a constitutional right. The right to bear arms is. Why is your state's drivers license valid here in my state but your CCW is not? Congress introduced a bill requiring national reciprocity among states that allow CCW.

The ONT's take? It's about damn time.

Revenge? Love triangle? Plot for future Hollywood movie? A weird story from California involving Craiglist, sex fantasies and police. Aren't you glad you lead a boring life? h/t Redc1c4

In July, an Ontario woman was accused of responding to “rape fantasy” ads on Craigslist – pretending to be her ex-fiancé’s wife and directing strangers to show up at the other woman’s home.

The Ontario woman was arrested and jailed. But on Monday the tale took a bizarre twist.

The wife has been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment and perjury for allegedly framing the Ontario woman in a complex scheme for reasons that remain unclear, according to authorities.

Wilson is the one who gave it to the CIA (as well as McCain and the GOPers). They were getting back at him for some crack he made about them being a bunch of masturbators, whatever it was.

Talk about Fake News. If so, the CIA got punked by 4Chan, which is just hilarious and shows the quality of our "intelligence" these days.

The PissGate story claims, if I've got it right it, that Trump went to the Ritz Carlton in Moscow (when I'm not sure), and stayed in the same room there Barky did in the past. And then, to make a gesture, decided to defile the bed Barky slept in by hiring a couple of Moscow whores/call girls to come up. He then had them piss on each other and him in the bed, in some golden shower shit game.

And Putin and the KGB (whatever they call themselves now) secretly recorded the whole show and have it on tape.

Now, does that even make sense? First, I don't think Trump would be into that shit at all, doesn't seem his personality type. I mean, he's a horn dog extraordinaire and more power to him, but this doesn't sound like his bag at all.

And does it even make sense as a fuck-you act of defilement against Barky? Nope. Who the hell would make any connection to Barky, to realize the disgusting mess would be an f-you to him?

They could have practiced a song 30 times and had slightly different variations in the vocals, bass, drums, etc

They were likely all high as kites and God knows Jimi never played a song the same way twice.

There are a fair amount of practice tapes the Woodstock ones per pretty good.

journalists. Wapo, NYT, Mother Jones, various twitter shitbirds. I used
their PGP keys and shit to make me seem legit. I presented myself as a
former MI6 operative

Now the entire media are reporting that Trump was briefed on the leaks. They're saying the FBI believes it to be credible

I
installed a new OS after the election so I have no proof that I
fabricated them. I intended to btfo them when one of them published it"

For the most part, this is true. If you are showing an intent to cancel, often times a retention dept will have options to lower your rates. Now, that's not to say they can always get you back exactly what you had. Our retention people often don't have that ability. They might be able to apply loyalty discounts, or some other kind of promo rates to bring your pricing close to an intro level. But again... not always. Sometimes they just can't match another company's pricing for new customers, and they'll let you see if the grass is greener on that other side.

It involves the (in)famous G-spot, which is region of increased sensitivity, and the Skene's glands (which is what would turn into a prostate in me turns into in women). It's too complicated and perhaps boring to ramble on about, but here's the rub. Not all women are as fully developed there as others. Some have the equipment to do it, and some don't. The sample sizes that dealt with weren't big enough to generalize to the whole population, but in their samples only 6 out of 10 women or so had the full Skene's gland tissue developed. IIRC.

Anyway, with a powerful G-spot orgasm, the urinary sphincter opens briefly and little contractions occur which squirt out a little pulse of urine. At the same time, the Skene's glands dump a little of their fluid.

The Skene's gland contribution is small, but it's measurable and looks just like male prostate fluid.

Anyway, the real thing, such as it is, is just a small amount.

602 The ONT staff came across this map. best selling music artists in each state. Seems to me that Paul Revere and The Raiders in Idaho, is, ah, shall we say bullshit? They aren't even in the Top 50 all time best selling artists.

This is perhaps one of the most perfect all-time examples of how disinformation spreads on the Internet.

First of all, the official source for this map is...some random Reddit user who made it and uploaded it.

But much much much worse than that is the fact that he made a small grammatical error in the title -- and that error has now caused 99% of Internet users to misinterpret the map.

He titled it, idiotically, "Best selling music artists IN each U.S. state" -- but that's not what he meant to say.

Because the map actually (and accurately) shows "Best selling music artists FROM each U.S. state"

D'oh!

I realized this instantaneously upon seeing "Indiana - Michael Jackson" and "Delaware - George Thorohgood." Because two artists are very distinctively (and unusually) from those two states. A quick scan revealed the rest of the map was the same -- the artists are FROM each state listed, but don't necessarily sell well in that state.

By all rights, there wouldn't be such hyper-specific regionalism if it was a "sales" map. If it truly was a map showing ""Best selling music artists IN each U.S. state," almost all the states would probably say "The Beatles" or "Whitney Houston" or "Elvis Presley" or "Frank Sinatra" or "Taylor Swift" or whoever else is by now on the list of all-time best-selling artists.

But because of SINGLE mis-used word in a headline, people around the world all now "know" the non-fact that "Howie Day" sells the most records in Maine and "Spencer Bohren" outsells every other artist in history in Wyoming.

A few of those, by chance, probably are correct --I wouldn't be surprised if Garth Brooks is the all-time best-selling artist from Oklahoma, as well as being from there. Same for Madonna/Michigan and Elvis/Mississippi. But most of the rest are almost comical.

I know they had a contract to make some of the plastic parts. I don't think Mattel ever made an entire rifle.

Shouldn't reply to myself, but it appears I was wrong twice in two sentences.

Mattel did not make any parts of the M-16. They did make a full size replica toy called the M-16 Marauder, which would have been an "entire rifle".

So there is "precedent" - the .357, the 9mm (want) 1911 variants (and not counting the 22LR practice adapters). Though 30C does seem a bit long to fit into a mag in that grip (think mine load to something like 1.630" or something).

IMDB says she was born in Homer, Alaska.

She said that she lived in a one-room shack with no electricity, running water or anything of the like and road a horse to work when she was young ... so the Utah birth sounds a little odd.

The map of America only looks depressing because it's about sales, not quality. Madonna may be the best-selling artist from Michigan, but she's nowhere near the best artist from Michigan. Etc. etc. etc. for almost every state.

A similar map of England would NOT mention Cream, The Sex Pistols, The Kinks, Jethro Tull, Elvis Costello, but instead Susan Boyle, Sam Smith, Leona Lewis, and all sorts of similarly atrocious modern acts that sell jillions of records -- even more than the "classic" bands of yesteryear.

Jewel Kilcher is a lying asshole. She grew up the granddaughter of Yule Kilcher, who helped to write the constitution of the State of Alaska, and was no slouch providing for his family from his homestead. Her parents fed her, housed her, educated her, etc., just like any other kid, and that little cabin she talks about was their summer hangout, not their house. She grew up on East End Road in Homer, AK, which is NOT the end of the earth.

She tells people she is from Los Angeles, and then when they ask about Alaska, she makes it sound like she was horribly abused and mistreated, etc. She is, as we say, full of shit.

She was invited to play at the Alaska State Fair and turned her nose up at it. It was beneath her by then, because she was a big star in LA. She can bite me and not in a good way.

I'm not a fan of people who piss on their families and friends because they are famous. Not at all.

690 Her own website says nothing about Utah but talks about her being raised on a homestead in Homer Alaska that her family has had since the 40s.

IMDB says she was born in Homer, Alaska.

She said that she lived in a one-room shack with no electricity, running water or anything of the like and road a horse to work when she was young ... so the Utah birth sounds a little odd.

And yeah, I believe it was code for something, but God only knows what that something actually was. Knowing the Clintons, probably something to do with shady campaign finance shenanigans.

706 670 I aren't no edumucated engineer or gun designer, but wow a .357 mag 1911 must have quite different metallurgy. The pressures from 45ACP are pretty low - top of my head, probably not much over half the max pressures for .357. That's a lot more oomph in the same-sized overall design.

Looks like barrel wall as well as the chamber/hood area have way more steel than a 1911. Looks like more steel than between the chambers in either my Redhawk .44 or S&W Model 28.

-----------

Well, it's a powerful round, and as such it's a little intimidating to people with smaller hands and weaker wrists. I'll fire a 1911 in .45 acp all day and not think about it, but the .38 Super is another matter. I just do not *enjoy* the thing.

Wiki:
"The cartridge was designed for use in the M1911 pistol and was capable of penetrating the body armor and automobile bodies of the time.[4] When the .357 Magnum was introduced in 1934, this advantage of the .38 Super was no longer enough to lure police departments and officers from the traditional revolver."

Originally, a LE service cal for improved penetration (body armor, car sheet metal). Supplanted by .357 Mag.

Resurgence in competition circles. Some folks like to shoot that on a gun with a compensator. Same power factor class as 45 ACP with 230 gr, but less felt recoil.

Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at January 11, 2017 01:58 AM (di1hb)

794 FWIW, .38 Super +P runs higher chamber pressure than .357 mag.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 11, 2017 01:19 AM (ZO497)

Well, if you took the exact dimensions of the 1911 design, except built it for .357 instead of .45, the walls of the barrel and chamber would, of necessity, be thicker, because the round has a smaller diameter. Whether that increase in wall thickness would convey the necessary extra strength, I'm sure not qualified to judge.

797 The .357 Coonan benefits not only from greater chamber wall thickness than the .45 ACP.

But from modern steels, heat treating, and advanced NDT testing technologies.

Obama Refers To Himself 75 Times In Farewell Address

President Obama referred to himself 75 times in his farewell address Tuesday night, according to a review of his prepared remarks by The Daily Caller.

Obama heavily promoted the speech, penning a blog post about it and appearing in a promotional video in the days leading up to the address.

Obama said "I" 33 times during the speech, "my" 20 times, "me" 10 times, and "I'm" or "I've" 12 times.

The president made a habit of focusing large chunks of his speeches on himself during his eight years in office.
