Hegarty says officers told the group last week they'd need a permit but they chose to violate a city ordinance. The authorities have a point. Unless one is trained in the proper handling and storage of food, there is a danger in distributing it. Some foods must be handled carefully, or there is a risk of deadly diseases. That's why most restaurant employees must complete a course in food safety. But to arrest people trying to make a difference? This seems excessive, even if the activists wanted to get arrested to make a point. And authorities have used the ordinance to shut down children's lemonade stands and other efforts by kids to make a few bucks. There is an element of overkill in ordinances that look to protect the public from consuming spoiled or tainted food. What happens when a public official fouls up big time? Baby Sister Update:
First, Thank You to The Horde for all the prayers. The good news is that she does *not* have early onset Alzheimer's. The (very) bad news is that she has a decent-sized tumor near her spinal cord. Was admitted to home city (Ocala, FL) hospital this morning, transferred to Univ of FL tonight. Hopefully biopsy on Wednesday. Her husband is a retired physician, which is *very* helpful, and we're keeping in touch regularly. He thinks very highly of UoF facilities, which makes me feel a bit better. Continued prayers (for Joyce) much appreciated. (I am terrified- I know there are all kinds of fair-to-good outcomes possible, but still scary. She's my only sibling, can't imagine her not being here) Posted by: ibguy at January 09, 2017 10:21 PM (vUcdz) 24

The distortion is - sometimes - in every sentence, in the very words used.
But - back to the game I prematurely called over and boring ...... Posted by: rhomboid at January 09, 2017 10:27 PM (QDnY+) That's a lot of how we've gone so far down the rabbithole of Leftist insanity in this country. When they took over academia and the media, they gained a certain influence over the language, and started abusing the hell out of it in order to try to push their agendas. They tell us over and over that up is down, black is white, and short is long - and write their definitions into the books, and muddy the waters. What should be defined is hazy and indistinct. The Confucians knew about this a long time ago, and held that when words and their true meanings were out of alignment, society broke down, the arts became degenerate, and government became untrustworthy. It could only go so far until people got fed up and righted themselves - and they did, in an event known as the Rectification of the Names, which was an ancient Chinese civil war. 58 Still trying to recover from a major hardware failure this weekend. Like $200 I don't have later and I'm mostly back where I started, except now the hardware change is making Windows fail to activate (again). No energy to deal with MS right now.
It's too bad I have even more problems with Linux, it would be nice to have a practical alternative (though I will hopefully have my quad-core Hackintosh this winter). 'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.' 'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.' 'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master - that's all.' Ugh one of those days at work...
About 2 years ago, we had some trouble with getting tax-required documentation returned to our office. So, we made a policy that we would send a letter out stating as much, that we needed signed documentation FIRST, then we would release funds to our clients. I drafted the letter, would have had it approved by the boss of course, and have been handling transactions ever since using this method, without incident. Well, I guess sometime over the weekend, someone confronted my boss about it, someone who thought they would be given an exemption or something, and put the boss in a corner. Boss freaks out to my supervisor who subsequently freaks out at me, saying it is bad service to do business that way, puts boss in a bad situation, yada yada. I've been in a mood all day ever since. I was just doing what I was told, two years ago; I'm stuck. If I do nothing, I am essentially taking the blame for following what I was told. If I fight it, I appear defensive. If you tire of delicious cookies and moderate, yet capable instruction in things like horseback riding, camping, entrepreneurship and first-aid, the Girl Scouts now have a "radical" alternative - a social justice-focused, feminist organization for young girls called the "Radical Monarchs."
The Guardian describes the Radical Monarchs as a "youth group for girls of color," and "radical Brownies." But the small group of 12 girls and two adult guides (based, of course, just outside of San Francisco), says they're more about empowerment and activism than badges and Thin Mints. The girls wear berets and still do activities, but those might include marching in the San Francisco Trans Pride Parade or meeting with progressive activists. "We met some of the members of the Black Panthers," troop member Lupita Martinez told Buzzfeed in December, "and that was really cool because they gave us our badges and we got to shake their hands." But to arrest people trying to make a difference? This seems excessive, even if the activists wanted to get arrested to make a point. And authorities have used the ordinance to shut down children's lemonade stands and other efforts by kids to make a few bucks. There is an element of overkill in ordinances that look to protect the public from consuming spoiled or tainted food.

I had jury duty about 5 years ago. We were summoned for about 8 trials (only one civil) but I wasn't called upon. We were let out a day early. Boring as heck waiting although the main courthouse we were at downtown had some interesting places to go to on lunch hour.
The only odd thing to happen was there was one guy who had a cook's job and was obviously a bit mentally slow who was called upon (despite it being all by chance) three times in our first day. He was called upon too in one trial on the second day but he hadn't shown up. So we explained to the judge and the registrar-type back in the waiting room that he hadn't shown up today. I wondered if he thought that he only had to do the one day. He didn't return later in the week. I got called back just last year but on the first day my group was informed that we were an alternate jury pool that would only be called upon if there were alot of cases that week. It turned out that the dockets were clear for us that week and they let us go after showing us the movie about it being our civic duty to serve; telling us after the movie that we weren't needed; that if any of us wanted to take the rest of the day off without telling our employer, the employer couldn't find out we'd been dismissed early (hinted at but not stated as boldly); and that coming even though we hadn't been used cleared us for the next x years (4 I think). And, no, Troy McClure didn't narrate the jury duty movie! Posted by: andycanuck at January 09, 2017 11:09 PM (lJXY3) 279

I can respect where Bob Marley was coming from.
He was locked into a really shitty contract with an absolutely blood-sucking record company; every song he wrote belonged to them, under those terms. He retaliated by writing more songs, and then saying, for example, "No, I didn't write that. My buddy Vince did." This gave his friends a nice source of income that Marley wouldn't have gotten anyway, from royalties. This trouble could've all been avoided if he'd hired a lawyer, or had a good manager, but he didn't, and so he had to make the best of a bad situation. I can respect that. Girl Scouting has been run by the feminists for quite a while now - they didn't have to take a stand against the old fogies like the Boy Scouts did because the GS leadership was hard core left - far more so than the girls or their parents.
Nationwide they've been selling off their camping properties in order to pay for fancy office buildings, expensive compensation packages for staff, and all the other goodies that nonprofits give themselves. Posted by: Boots at January 09, 2017 11:07 PM (EBwPV) Girl Scouts all jumped the shark when they started sending cash to Planned Parenthood. Somehow telling kids they could have been aborted just sends a nasty message, IMO. Boy Scouts have done the same when they decided that homosexuals would make fine leaders. Of boys. The kind homosexuals like to have sex with. Uh, no. We have Trail Life at our Cathedral here, so that's what the boy does instead of all that political nonsense. He gets to go camping, climb rocks, shoot rockets, go fishing, and all that jazz with boys of all ages and lots of good Catholic men. Somehow, I suspect that was what Scouts was meant to be, but once again, this is why we can't have nice things. Posted by: tcn in AK at January 09, 2017 11:11 PM (cm1Bl) 293

I'm fine with branding, and owning your livestock. What I'm not so fine with is genetic patents, like what Monfort has on its modified crops.
I understand that they invest a lot of money into modifying their crops, and the effects are generally beneficial. What I don't like about it, though, is that if you're a farmer whose neighbor was bought out by Monfort, your crops end up being cross-pollinated by Monfort's crops, through no choice of your own, and now all of a sudden you owe royalties to Monfort. One Close Election Balances Another
Last November, Bloomberg's anti-2nd Amendment brigade outspent pro-2nd Amendment lovers and passed, by less than 1%, a flawed anti-2nd Amendment initiative measure that required FBI background checks for almost transfers of possession of firearms, even temporary ones amongst people at a hunting trip. However, it would seem that despite all of the out-of-state money Bloomberg spent on the initiative, they didn't bother spending it on competent lawyers to draft the measure, because by its very wording, IT IS UNINFORCEABLE. Posted by: The Deplorable Prothonotary Warbler at January 09, 2017 11:28 PM (0OG8D) I don't think there has ever been an actual case where a farmer raising non-GMO crops has been sued by patent holders for GMO crops on adjacent fields. There have been cases where unscrupulous farmers have saved seed from GMO crops, replanted the following year, and who then claimed the crop was cross-pollinated. Really, if such random pollination happened, your entire field would not become the GMO crop. There would be patches, and even in the patches, there would be some of the "legit" crop. Are you aware (historically) of any land-based anti-ship torpedo installations? Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 09, 2017 11:04 PM (ZO497) The only one I know of is the battery at the entrance to Christiana/Oslo that sank the German heavy cruiser Bluecher at the start of the German invasion of Norway. I think the installation and torpedoes were actually of WWI vintage, and the officer commanding was officially retired at the time. So the Germans were embarrassed as well as sunk. There were some funny things that happened to us on the grand jury though. If any case presented during your term are not resolved, you have to come back until they are since you know the particulars. We had one case, an embezzlement case for a bank. The guy was and employee that took them for about 50,000. But this ADA Dickhead brought us back like 4 times with additional evidence to bolster his case. He would've got his indictment the first time around ( it's really true that a grand jury will indict a ham sandwich) but he kept bringing us back for a month. So, FINALLY, he asked for an indictment. It took us two minutes. Unanimous decision, "Fuck him. No indictment."
Fast forward two years. I'm drinking in a bar downtown and who walks in but ADA Dickhead and he sits down next to me. So we end up talking and I mentioned where I knew him from. And I say." Do you remember a bank embezzelment case you gave us?" He says, "Yeah, I had him cold!" "Know why you lost?" "Why?" "Because we all thought you were an asshole!" Posted by: Michael the TEXIT at January 09, 2017 11:47 PM (nvMvs) Yes, Pooky got diagnosed with major depression in December. We're not entirely sure when the onset was, because his sleep apnea has been getting worse for the past year and that's when he started stressing out. Sleep has always been his main coping mechanism, and when it got taken away and his first shirt (a total asshole that I came close to decking in the ER) started riding him while his doctors ignored him, things got out of hand. (Pooky says he wouldn't have gotten in trouble if I had punched the bastard while Pooky was clearly unconscious, but I'm not so sure. Hence my hesitation.) #376: That happened here in Colorado, too. Bloomberg (who local talk-radio host Peter Boyles likes to call "The Mayor of Colorado") lobbied our state legislature to pass a similar law calling for a background check for every change of possession, not just for changes of ownership.
Right after that law took effect, I went to a gun store with a friend of mine who'd recently dislocated his elbow. He was picking up a rifle that he'd bought. I would've preferred to carry his new rifle for him, but I couldn't, because of that new law. We would've had to run a background check on me just to let me carry the rifle to his car, and then another background check on him for me to give his own rifle back to him. While every sheriff in Colorado had already declared that this law was unenforceable, and so they wouldn't bother to try, and the Attorney General of Colorado had agreed with them, I was still concerned for the shop. The people who govern the licensing of gun stores might still want to enforce that utterly stupid law, and if the store's security cameras had shown me picking up the gun, I was worried that they could lose their license to sell firearms. A question for Teh Horde, and one for an individual:
* Family who I'm isolated from by distance, now wants me to avail myself of video conversation online tools. Not being an Appleyte, I can't/won't use their "facetime" product. Plus, it may transpire that I'll also have to stay in touch here with home, from afar, in the near future. So, there's what. Skype, kik, others? Preferences or adverse advisories? I'd welcome any and all help. * TCN in AK. Drop me a line if you would? I've got some specific Alaska questions as relates to a job offer. Not locked in on that yet, as I'm also considering a different offer which would keep me on the Gulf Coast. But I do have to consider all of my options. And, I'm watching the late PM run of Tucker Carlson. I'm predicting Glenn Beck will be on this season's Dancing With the Stars. He sure had some nimble moves dancing around some of Mr. Carlson's questions, there. Prayers out too, for ibguy's sis. And him, too. Yeah, no. Not even close. I just rolled back and looked and #3 is grabbing the defender. It's definitely a pick. The question is whether it was a legal pick or not and the refs thought it was fine. Honetly, the DB should be the one doing the jamming, so he's got only himself to blame, particularly as it was carbon copy of the previous TD play. One of my parents lessons that made me stronger at 13 was making me keep my paper route through the winter (in Minnesota) when I wanted to quit. 541 On the game winner it looked like the Bama CB pushed the WR into the other DB.
Posted by: Grump928(C) pollutes your thread with FOOTBALL at January 10, 2017 12:30 AM I don't know how it could have been fine. As soon as the ball is snapped, the WR goes right at the CB and drives him into the end zone, blocking the entire time. So he was blocking the CB before the ball was even in the air, because Watson was rolling to his right on a designed rollout. Full disclosure, I was rooting for Alabama (though I'm a B1G fan, Purdue alum), so my opinion is a little biased. But I don't think anyone --- even Clemson --- will deny that was a pick play and the WR committed blatant OPI. Refs let it go and Clemson wins NC. Like you said, though, the CBs blew the coverage on that play. They should have been ready for it after Clemson did it on the previous TD. Granted, Saban should have been in the refs' ears to watch out for the pick play after Clemson did it once. Failures all around. 389 I really really wanted Clemson in the SEC East instead of Missouri. It made perfect sense. It would have put Clemson and USC in the same situation as Alabama-Auburn.
Posted by: Grump928(C) pollutes your thread with FOOTBALL at January 09, 2017 11:37 PM (LTHVh) Conferences are looking for new states when they expand nowadays because of cable tv. The SEC was in the planning stages of creating the SEC Network with ESPN, and ESPN told them that adding FSU/Clemson did nothing to increase revenue since they would get carriage in those states based on Florida/USC, so Missouri and Texas AandM were the two chosen. Conference networks are also the reason the PAC10 added Colorado and Utah to become the PAC12, the Big10 added Maryland and Rutgers, and the ACC added Syracuse, Pitt, Notre Dame and Louisville. Early 2020's will see the next round of conference expansion when Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas decide what they want to do. Join the PAC, SEC, Big10, ACC or stay in the BigXII. 545 "Sometimes it's better to go low instead of high. See Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Dak Prescott-see Ryan Leif, Johnny Manziel, etc"
While Leaf and Manziel had issues regardless of where they were drafted the obvious problem is that when you are drafted high you are on a shitty team. Posted by: FOAF at January 10, 2017 12:32 AM Yeah, while Prescott and Wilson are recent examples (and Brady the obvious exceptional exception) of QBs succeeding when not taken in Round 1, I recently checked the top QBs currently in the NFL and pretty much all the top QBs were Round 1 picks. Matt Ryan, Rodgers, Eli, Big Ben, Luck, Stafford, Mariota, Winston, Rivers, Carr, Bradford, Palmer, Flacco. Of the Top 20 QBs in Total QBR this season, only Prescott, Cousins, Brees, Tyrod Taylor, Wilson and Dalton were not taken in Round 1. Prescott (DAL), Brees (SD) and Wilson (SEA) were drafted into great situations. Prescott has a top running game and best OL in the NFL. Brees was able to sit behind Rivers before starting. Wilson inherited the best defense in the NFL. Granted, then there is David Carr who never stood a chance when he was drafted by HOU. HOU had no offensive line and ended up just getting Carr killed every time he took a snap. The situation into which a QB is drafted I think plays as much a role in his success as where he is drafted or how much talent he has. Brady Quinn was a pretty good QB in college. Went to Browns and the rest is history... Posted by: Clyde Shelton at January 10, 2017 12:47 AM (7A4qQ) 573

I don't know the current NCAA pass interference/etc. rules, so can't opine on that key last play, though it did seem the actual contact in the "pick" was red-on-red.
But watching just a few NFL games with friends this year (and they're up on the rules and details), everyone agreed pass interference in the NFL now is madness and chaos. It seems on half the plays both receivers and defenders are hanging all over each other, shoving each other, holding each other - all while the ball's in the air. It's like sandlot touch football we used to play. Pass interference is unavoidably one of the toughest judgment call officiating tasks in team sports, always was. Now? At least in the NFL, it just looks like anarchy much of the time. Posted by: rhomboid at January 10, 2017 12:56 AM (QDnY+) 589

@599 A lot of small woodstoves from the 70's or so are just iron boxes. They tend to be pretty hard on fuel, make a lot of smoke, dirty up the pipes. But it only takes the addition of one "smoke shelf" fin to improve them, and you can often do that without even welding -- the deflector can sit on pieces of angle iron, that you can weld in, wedge in if you're lucky, or attach with get this Stove Bolts. If you just look around at some good, big, or new stoves, you quickly get an idea what it takes. I highly recommend it.

since the only other heat in the house are 2 small gas floor furnaces (1942 build date) when it gets cold, we have a fire most evenings. we move the air around with a couple Vornado fans on the floor and ceiling fans in the bedrooms and den. if you're into fires, get yourself a Kindling Cracker... the fingers that stay attached to your body will thank you. i've only had mine 3 days and already sold someone else on buying one. https://www.kindlingcracker.com/ Posted by: redc1c4 at January 10, 2017 01:32 AM (YBR3Y) 611

I bought a house built in the early 80s. Electric heat but really good passive solar and a big heat sink fireplace. Put in a gas fired unit where the wood one was and because they designed the house so well. That gas fireplace heated the whole house. Was the cheapest house I ever paid to heat. Some eco shit has real benefit.
Posted by: Willy J. at January 10, 2017 01:45 AM (W6Ch1) 614
I like a real fireplace. Paper, kindling, logs, match. Yes, I realize that various types of stoves would heat my house much more efficiently*, but I couldn't sit in front of them and fuss with them, tossing shit in, rearranging the logs until they are just...so. Not worth it.
*I did but a blower grate for the fireplace, and it does make a big difference in the heat output. It's a raised, elongated "V" shaped frame. The frame is made of hollow pipes, and as the air in them gets heated a blower turns on and blows the hot air into the room. Making fires on the grate is weird, basically the idea is to get a good bed of coals down at the point of the V and stack the new logs across the top. This works quite well, but your bed of coals doesn't last nearly as long as in a traditional setup because the coals fall between the gaps in the bars at the base of the V and burn out quickly on the floor of the fireplace below. You have to keep feeding logs on the top and breaking down logs to the base of the V as they burn to keep things going. Still, it burns well, if not as long as traditional grates, and it gives a big increase in room heat. Posted by: Weirddave at January 10, 2017 01:45 AM (TrV8o) 615

fire story: couple years back it was CAF (for SoCal) and we had a fire going, but the house was filling with smoke.
turns out that, due to the cold, and utter lack of wind, that the smoke was going out the chimney, cooling off, then being drawn back down the other chimney flue, because the guy who resurfaced both flues that previous summer had followed the idiotic #Failifornia regulations, and used a horseshoe clamp to wedge the other flue open, so we wouldn't light a gas fire in that one and kill ourselves with CO. instead we got some smoke inhalation, and had to chill the house down getting all the smoke out. thank you nanny state assholes. We got a better stove that was filled with bricks and had throttles in the door. This improvement pushed out the wake comfort several hours. Sleeping in was as late as 5 Oclock instead of 2:30 to wake in a reasonably warmish room.

I have a screen front you can use on the woodstove instead of closing the airtight doors, so you can screw around with it as much as you want. Use that about twice a year, which I think is typical for fireplaces.
Best thing for a fireplace is to put an airtight insert in it, with glass doors. Some of those have built in heat exchangers with circulator fans. Still looks like a fireplace, but makes heat like a stove, and best part, does not pump all your house heat up the chimney. Spendy though, but everything about a "real" fireplace is "real" expensive. "All good things must come to an end. California's tunnel tree is no more."
All the news outlets are reporting this as "the" California tunnel tree, and everyone is in mourning that the world's only tunnel tree no longer exists. Except...not. There are actually at least SIX remaining tunnel trees in California that I know of, all still intact, and the one that fell was actually one of the lesser-known ones. One sloppy news report and the world just accepts it as true forever. But there are two drive-thru tunnel trees in Sequoia National Park, one in Yosemite, two up on Highway 101 in redwood country, and another one on private land I think somewhere in the gold country. And there may be others as well -- those are just the ones I've visited in my lifetime. So yeah, it's sad that one blew down, but -- there are others. The destroyed one had apparently been essentially dead for years already anyway, so it's demise was not a surprise. And beyond the "drive-thru" variety, there are many many "walk-through" sequoias and redwoods, with natural tunnels caused by fires over the centuries. I-80 near Donner Summit, closed due to mud and rock slides, and heavy snowfall. Westbound lanes close, possible they could make east bound side two way. Don't know if they will do that, or how long the interstate will remain closed. I40 in North Carolina (Great Smoky Mts - a beautiful stretch of freeway), was closed for several months (in the ninties) because of a rock fall. "The theory of Communism may be summed up in one sentence: Abolish all private property. Karl Marx"
True enough ... but in the real world, "communism" is more like the mafia with a government enforcer, and government bag men, and government exempt/approved "foundations". I refer to the "commies" of the left, but mean it generically, in the sense that Soviet card carrying commies really did influence Hollywood, really did march through our institutions with their fellow travelers, mentored Obama and red diaper baby Jarret and others. They are now statists in a sense, but prefer to operate outside control of our state, deferring to the UN (where the scum thrive), or other subversive secretive groups. The THEORY of communism has little to do with real world "commies". Even the few countries remaining communist mostly had to adapt to outside forces. Vietnam, Laos, Cuba, North Korea, China ... are the five I see listed. Russia is something else I guess ... an oligarchy? Then there is the US with its "deep state" and shadow government, and whatever they call the "uniparty" that refused to prosecute Hillary or Lerner. The cold war moved inside the US, and we still have a lot of commie backed remnants, that seem threatened now. Perhaps that is why (commie) Hollywood voices against Trump are so frantic, and it is more than just Streep throat lunacy. Posted by: illiniwek at January 10, 2017 05:43 AM (/aIFg) 694

My sister had one of those. It made kick-ass cupcakes. Hell Yeah, I helped. What kid passes up a shot at a cupcake ? Posted by: ScoggDog at January 10, 2017 07:01 AM (fiGNd) 723
