The Letter Coriot.jpg

The Letter
Camille Corot

This piece was donated to the metropolitan Museum of Art by a famous American art-collecting family; the Havemeyers. The family owned a large property near where I grew up, and we used to go there to observe the stars and chat about eschatology and the failure of post-modernist literature. And drink beer.

77 I'm a bit more familiar with Corot's landscapes, which I enjoy. They often have an older classical European sense to them. His portraits seem more appropriate for his own time in the 19th century.

I don't know much about art history but wonder if he had an influence on the later Impressionist painters, especially with his portraits. The loose brush strokes and swirl of the paint suggests Impressionism to me. Something else I want to find out is what paints he favored. The portraits and even some of the landscapes seem to use a limited color palette. SIGH! So damn much I don't know.

Thanks, CBD. Another painting to enjoy and learn about.

Compelling the rich to care for the poor is theft and slavery. Dressing it up in pretty words and fancy theories makes it no less theft. The fact that it never works, that the only outcome is loss of freedom, and the enrichment of only the class that gets to decide who is rich and who is poor and who has to sacrifice is always overlooked in the rush to get something for nothing from suddenly legal theft.

You can care for the poor all you want, and good luck to you with that. But. Do. It. With. Your. Own. Property.

You know, the funny thing is that, considering the "erotic" dreck that is self-published on Amazon, I could probably write a silent film-era erotica story and sell quite a few. Actually, I know I could - I did a scene set in that era once, as an attempt to break through my writing block.

156 Speaking of letters:

I don't know how many of you have heard of Jack Finney - he was a writer who specialized in "time slip" stories. In a number of them, people were able to enter the past either through wishing it, accidentally sliding through a time portal or by unexpectedly encountering a long-lost ticket booth.

He's best known for the novels Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Time and Again, and I happen to like his nonfiction book Forgotten News: The Crime of the Century and Other Lost Stories.

My first introduction to him was in a 1959 short story called The Love Letter. The plot is simple: sometime in 1950s NYC, a lonely man picks up an 1880s writing desk at an antique store. Inside a hidden compartment, he finds an unsent letter from a woman to a fantasy lover. On a whim, he decides to write back to her.

I've always loved the story and it makes me sad, too. I think you would all like it. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, set aside a few minutes and enjoy:

Today, yes. This subject fascinates me, how we are evolving as a species, based on the speed with which we are able to communicate... and the scale of it.

Just imagine, all your fine poetry... probably has a larger audience here than, say... Keats, in his lifetime.

Now imagine the love of your life, living a continent away, and you get one postal delivery every month or so, which contains the most crucial elements of your future, in a handful of pages.

That would be torture to us, but to folks in our not-so-distant past, it was routine.

Yeah. The time and the effort to handwrite a letter usually (for me) meant really striving to make each word count. In the electronic era words are easy, and therefore cheaper. Why bother to stop and think before hitting "Post" after all?

I see this most strikingly in the electronic medical record. Hundreds of thousands of words whose main result is the obscuring of useful information and the bludgeoning death of communication. An economy of words would be a great benefit to medical record keeping.

258 Hmm, I keep getting told how chess was practically invented by the Muslims.

Now I'm just confused.

In the musical Chess, lyricist Tim Rice had a song about that. Partial lyrics:

Not much is known
About the early days of chess beyond a fairly vague report
That fifteen hundred years ago two princes fought,
Though brothers, for a Hindu throne.

Their mother cried,
For no one really likes their offspring fighting to the death;
She tried to stop their slaughter with her every breath,
But sure enough, one brother died.

Sad beyond belief,
She told her winning son, "You
Have caused such grief,
I can't forgive
This evil thing you've done!"

He tried to explain
How things had really been,
But he tried in vain -
No words of his
Could mollify the queen.

And so he asked
The wisest men he knew
The way to lessen her distress -
They told him he'd be pretty certain to impress
By using model soldiers on a chequered board
To show it was his brother's fault -
They thus invented chess.

The advent of electronic communication is a terrible thing, in the context of personal communications.

I have copies of letters from the early 1800's that my relatives wrote. Aside from the beautiful handwriting, there is a thoughtfulness and personal touch that is completely missing from pixels on a screen.

283 One of my better moves...

Two weeks ago I hired a "maintenance man" to work for the family. He was one of the guys on the crew that did the cement work at my house and who offered to come back and caulk the seams for an additional cost.

Now, he's laid off for the winter and on unemployment, so he's happy with $12.50/hr cash.

This is what heaven must be like.

He spent three days cleaning and organizing the garage, then moved on to cleaning and painting in the attics in the house. He's completed two and they came out fantastic. He has his own pickup truck, so he's taking loads to the donation center and dump.

Lots of project that I always said I would get to are now getting done. I should have done this a long time ago.

I fought with Jack Kemp in the halls of congress for electronic record keeping back in '93. It's one of the elements that can dramatically lower healthcare cost and improve results.

Plus, if we're ever going to get to a free-market, competitive healthcare market, electronic record keeping is essential so that the patient has access and controls the movement of information so that they're free to go to the low cost provider.

This transition should have been started 30 years ago, but the medical world is slow to accept change (they would still be bloodletting if it were up to them).

Technology will make the record keeping seamless and easy very soon.

He cant tell us how any GOP President Elect would have done better to date with his cabinet selections, etc.
Trump is rude, crass and boorish. So fvcking what. Most politicians are.

Charlie is more into personality than substance and that's too bad.

And when I have to go to an outlying clinic or specialist, it's like I'm now in a completely different medical system where all the same paperwork has to be filled out again, and when I ask them why this information isn't available to them from their seamless electronic records, all I get is a blank stare.

From my credit report, apparently someone tried to take out an on-line loan using my information five or six times at the beginning of August. LifeLock caught and stopped one, but one got through. Funny thing, though, once the police report was filed, calls from the lender concerning repayment, and who I repeatedly told that I had not taken out the loan, stopped.

If you've seen it from the inside looking out, you know how silly it is to say "the electronic medical record creates a seamless and easy way to keep records."

What records. And for what purpose.

Sometimes, get this, providers "flood the zone" with records, because they know their lawyers will be able to pull out the arse covering stuff when the patient sues, and if you are a patient, and I don't WANT you knowing what I'm putting in your chart, it is so easy to hide the good stuff amongst all the chafe...

I love it when theory meets practice. Practice is so... impracticable , sometimes.

When we get to a free market, competition-driven healthcare system, those records will be available instantly (for a small fee), anywhere in the world. You will never have to fill out another superfluous form or redo a lab test that is still current.

There is that South American literary movement called Magical Realism, in which miracles and phantasms walk in normal life and people accept them like mild fever dreams, and I never could deal with that logically.

I always preferred the more realistic view of it, as people would actually deal with it. Pio sounds like a very practical man.

"I would expect, at this point, additional transfers to be announced," said Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary. He characterized the moves, which come in the final weeks of Obama's administration, as continuing the long-running effort to clear detainees from the prison.

Yea, you could never get away with that politically, but had insurance been outlawed early on, medical service would be like going to the dentist or the vet with the most expensive options only being a few thousand dollars.

Trump just needs to repeal ObamaCare and worry about a replacement later, the people that are going to be upset at him repealing ObamaCare were never going to vote for him anyway.

Related, I think, when I lost someone quite close to me, I was a member of an online community, and would write about it, almost daily, I think.

After a while the people I thought were my friends stopped wanting to hear/see my rambling words, and demonstrated it clearly enough, although without class, grace, or really, friendship.

Part of me wishes I could go back now and find all those meandering online, therapeutic word spillages. Part of me believes it would be damn near impossible to read, if I did.

So they're lost. At this point, I think for the best. I do feel bad for those people who had to experience the other end of it day after day.

Still, that doesn't really excuse my so-called friends, being unable to let me know they wanted me to stop without being asses about it.

California Hires Eric Holder as Legal Bulwark Against Donald Trump

“Having the former attorney general of the United States brings us a lot of firepower in order to prepare to safeguard the values of the people of California,” Kevin de León, the Democratic leader of the Senate, said in an interview. “This means we are very, very serious.”
Mr. de León said he expected California to challenge Washington — and defend itself from policies instituted in Washington — on issues including the environment, immigration and criminal justice. He said California Democrats decided to turn to Mr. Holder as they watched Mr. Trump assemble his cabinet and begin to set the tone for his presidency.

Actually yes. While insurance is preferable to government imposed socialism, it distorts the market for medical care in similar ways. And it's necessarily less efficient since the insurance guys are making a buck in addition to the health scammers.

I can't see congress going for it, though. If for no other reason than you've got competing 'free market' interests-actual competition in health service prices vs. whether folks want to freely pool their resources through an insurance company-that split the GOP even before you get to corruption issues.

Also, you (usually) only use things like homeowner insurance for something catastrophic like your house burning down. Not normal maintenance and repairs.

Health insurance became this vehicle where all medical service was run through.

I don't think outlawing insurance is a politically viable solution, but it distorted the market in a really bad way. Especially since it is so heavily regulated with so many mandates.

576 Dem Rep. Elijah Cummings Suggests People Will Be 'Dying In The Streets' If Obamacare Is Repealed . . .

As opposed to what is happening in Baltimore and Chicago every weekend?

577 Re:Cummings

The dumbass represents parts of Baltimore.

People already are dying in the streets.

Maybe he could focus some of that nuclear mind-meld level thinking on that particular problem first.

578 >>>>Nope, the industry has been trying to get the Government to finalize some format for health records for over 20 years.

There isn't some governing civilian board like the IEEE for the
internet.... and the Government needs buy in because of Medicare and
Medicaid...

THAT is what has slowed Electronic Medical records....
.
.
.
.That plus DOD (Navy, Army and Air Force) and the VA were all going their own separate ways to develop electronic records of all types including health records.

Each Service was trying to invent electronic records in house by itself instead of DOD mandating and implementing a single format Agency wide. A total waste of money and resources.

Son told his dad, "You'd have to be deaf and blind to not see how Mom has been treated all these years. You need to tell them to KNOCK IT OFF."

Love that boy.

That is absolutely the best news I have had in a couple of weeks!!! I am so proud of your son, and so very happy your husband talked to his family. Who knows, maybe this will be the beginning of them coming around to actually befriending you!

Thanks! After 30+ years, I am never going to be friends with those two sisters and the oldest spoiled niece. Don't care, either. Just tired of the snarky crap and backstabbing. So Christmas was a start, hopefully!

That is not even the half of it. The real laugher, hot on the heels of the Hollywood celebs imploring Congress to "stand up to Trump," is a new WP story on a poll (remember them?) on how a majority of "even people in red and purple states" want the Democrats to "keep him in check." Wonder if these are similar to all the polls that had Hitlery with a 99.9% chance of winning - hmm?

Anyway - these retards have no clue. They actually think :

1) that anyone takes polls, particularly ones funded and taken by outfits with titles like "The Center for American Progress Action Fund," as accurate, fair and unbiased (Heh.); and

2) That Trump actually gives a f*ck.

These f*cknuts think they are dealing with a Dimocrat or a GOPe who is going to look at a poll, pee himself ( or herself as the case may be) and change course immediately. Heh. they really are completely unprepared for what is going to happen next.

Not prepared at all.

And it is glorious.

585 ".That plus DOD (Navy, Army and Air Force) and the VA were all going their own separate ways to develop electronic records of all types including health records. "

Last time I was at my MTF, they handed me a questionnaire and told me that I was required to fill it out.

I handed it back blank, and told them to talk to me after they included the required notice of mandatory requirement to the bottom of the form.

Had to sit down with some senior people after that, and explain to them how their desire to collect data did not necessarily translate to my participation being mandatory.

At least not without the notice at the bottom stating so, and listing what gave them that authority to make it mandatory.

That was over three years ago.

And I think that every patient continues to fill them out.

Except me, and my family.

And they have stopped asking me to do so as well.
