Overnight Open Thread (30 Dec 2016)

Heh. Obama's sanctions on Russia are a metaphor for his entire administration.

These sanctions are just like everything else Obama has done. They are puny, they are ineffectual, they are self-serving, and they are designed to demonize domestic opponents.

Ah yes, a time that when you blew off the President, it was deemed a very bad thing by the press. Tim Thomas put himself above team. You won't see coverage like this for those blowing off Trump. Now it's seen as a badge of honor. Spare me your outrage lefties if you don't even live by your own rules. Don't even get me started on your "coexist" BS. You can't even practice that either.

In related news, now liberals are pushing for a boycott of the Rockettes as they have enough volunteers to perform at Trump's inauguration.

Also: Mormon Tabernacle Choir singer resigns rather than sing for Trump. She compares Trump to Hitler. Someone needs to hit the history books as they obviously don't know what Hitler did if they're comparing the two. Idiot.

Electronic Devices

No. Just no. Kissenger, a mobile device that lets people kiss each other from anywhere in the world.

B-1B

M1 Garand

One of these days I'll get one. The legendary rifle that fought World War II.

Academic Decline

American Studies: A sad tale of academic decline.

The result today is an academic sub-specialty wedded to a tightly-corseted belief that the United States represents the locus of sin (racism, sexism, colonialism, and the like) in the modern world, and that any study of America should restrict itself to call-outs and condemnations. American Studies now serves chiefly as validation system for academicians who know their findings in advance: racism, sexism, and imperialism.

Crying Wolf

Keep it up media. Its not working. The media that cried wolf.

Transgender Dog Prank!

Comet

Hmmmm. A rare comet is zooming past Earth right now, and you should be able to see it with binoculars. There are additional chances to see other comets in early January as well.

Internet Of Things

Police ask: "Alexa, did you witness a murder?" Interesting times where things can be recorded and stored anywhere.

When we take our newf to the pet store, he likes to "shop" by checking out the toys and bones, and will get exactly one treat from the open bins of treats. He carries it to the checker, too. Then goes around to their side of the counter and pushes the treat bin there. He's absolutely shameful.

51 I find it amusing that Putin is just kind of shrugging off Obama's petulant new sanctions and refusing to retaliate (against the advice of his own Foreign Minister).

Putin is basically saying, "This means nothing. In three weeks you'll have a new President, so I don't even have to care right now."

I expect Obama to escalate in some way, though. His ego just can't take being brushed off like that.

95 The M-1 is an interesting study on how a piece of technology can actually be objectively lousy but succeed because it's so far ahead of its peers.

The op rod is a huge mass of reciprocating metal that cycles every time it's fired. Now you need to re-aim, because a couple pounds of steel has just bounced through your rifle.

The corrosive cartridges blow fouling through the whole gas system, requiring constant cleaning.

Using .30-06 instead of .276 was purely political and didn't do any favors for the guys who had to use it. It hit harder, but spewing 9mm pistol rounds was already a pretty handy trick and delivering .30 at 1000 yards wasn't really a world-beater anymore.

Detachable box magazines were already a solved problem 20 years earlier; using en-bloc clips to charge an internal magazine was a hilarious anachronism.

The safety is inside the trigger guard. The procedure for disengaging the safety is pretty much sticking your finger in the trigger guard. AYFKM.

It was absolutely the best of all the standard-issued infantry weapons of its time, but it really should have been a lot better, and there's no real reason it couldn't have been.

Garands are even cooler than you think. If you're a WWII buff, as I am, it's funny - past few days I've been finding Battle of Bulge video/imagery online to supplement a book I'm reading, and seeing the guys firing their M1s, the clips ejecting ....

104 Completely OT and apropos of nothing except that I remember talking about the franchise on other ONTs - they're making a Double Dragon 4, with retro NES graphics and with a very competent development team (Ark System Works and some of the original guys from Technos as consultants). Unfortunately, it's only on PS4 and PC (Steam). I was sort of hoping they'd make it into an NES cart - there's an easy way to do it, it's basically just a cart shell and a flash disk.

189 Grenn Blecch was sort dead to me right after the re-election of Obama, when he declared that it had all happened because he, Grenn Blecch, had been a "divider" and not a "uniter". He apparenty felt really, really bad about that, too.

I saw it all as virtue-signalling, that he would henceforth be much more friendly to the GOPe/Dem alliance in order to nurture and improve his relevancy in their eyes and thus improve his future economic prospects.

In other words, he straight-up sold out with that declaration.

I was not the least bit surprised when he came right out opposing Donald Trump with every fiber of his being, because I already knew Blecch was a sell-out. He'd already straight-up declared it! And so, his protestations meant absolutely nothing to me.

191 Willy J. I could be wrong, but I think South Korea's M1s (both Garands and carbines) are owned by them - not lent under the Military Assistance Program or other post-war programs - so CMP wouldn't be in the picture anyway. The CMP only deals in govt. property that is returned to DOD, and then passed on to them for sale to support their activities.

This question comes up all the time, maybe someone else here can correct me, but I think the South Korean rifles would be private sale. Still possible, and still a question of Washington OK'ing importation. So THAT part might be due for a change - but CMP wouldn't be selling them.

Speaking of which, please oh please, with all of the great appointments so far, I hope Trump really blows off the roof with his ATF chief.

Yes it was primarily designed to go beneath radar, though it has some radar-stealthiness inherent in its design.

It's original, primary anti-USSR penetrating mission may have been OBE'd by technology and other changes, but I believe it is one hell of a platform for delivering conventional ordnance. Haven't kept up, but I believe with its very large conventional bomb capacity, it could deliver a crap-ton of guided ordnance (JDAM-like, passive).

As one would imagine, Air Force gets some pretty good fly-overs to start home games.

Can't recall - I think F-16s, then F-15s. Then - a B-1, ears back, sprinting - and looking *very* low.

We were towards the top of the stadium, at one end of the elongated bowl. B-1 comes screaming in, and from the sight, the sound (everyone had to cover their ears), and the fuel vapor/exhaust that was visible and quite odiferous settling all around us - it appeared he was *too* low.

Our Air Force escort, as I recall, later told us he was too low, and got in some warm water over his stunt. Of course, it was awesome.

301 Since Kissinger, a factoid: Kissinger was present at the Battle of the Bulge as an intel officer. Obviously he survived.

Another Jewish, German-speaking intel officer was not so lucky: he was "outed" by German prisoners after the unit in which he served surrendered en masse to the Germans a day later. He and another Jewish GI were murdered by their captors.

I'm not aware of another such case of murdered American POWs who were killed by the Germans specifically because they were Jewish. But at the Bulge, many of the Germans (not just the SS) sort of went "eastern front" on the US forces, at least in several cases.

316 Someone pointed out that the Chinese are taking the 80% solution. Even with stealing our tech, their stuff isn't as good. Rather than try to make it as good, they make it about 80% as good as ours, but they make a lot more of it.

Hell, look at our Sherman against the German tanks. The Germans had multiple types of tanks that could easily kill a Sherman, but not enough of them. Sure a single Tiger could and did destroy 10 Shermans at a time, but we could afford to take the losses. Also, our tanks were just good enough to take out their tanks under the right circumstances. Thanks to superior numbers we were able to achieve those "circumstances" and wear them down by destroying tanks and killing crews they could not replace. China seems to have learned this lesson.

When I was in my teens, it was the game Risk.We would get nasty with each other, making side alliances then stabbing the ally in the back. We actually made my younger sister cry.

Once when my brother was playing with some college friends, one of the kids got so pissed off that he flipped up the board and sent everything flying.

366 Hell, look at our Sherman against the German tanks.
Build with just enough quality, then build in quantity.

One would hope.
Years ago I read a book written by a retired Chinese General (?) who said that taking us on strictly in a conventional manner was a losing proposition, so they should rely heavily on asymmetric warfare. Cyber warfare, corporate espionage, plain espionage, political sabotage, economic warfare, etc. One example is how years ago they developed multiple ways to destroy our satellites. As we have become very satellite dependent, that is significant. Hell, they are even ahead of us in hypersonic weapons delivery. Also according to the book, they would not be against using chemical, biological, even nuclear weapons under the right circumstances.
Pop a nuke over the U.S., crash our banking system and/or electrical grid, and dare us to respond as they invade Taiwan was one scenario mentioned.
This book was VERY popular in Chinese leadership circles.

466 I was watching this video of Dinesh D'Souza debating Cenk Uyger, and, wow, Cenk certainly has some strong opinions about the idea of corporations counting as people in the eyes of our justice system. Spoiler alert: he's totally against it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Js0onZLdOWE

Well, here's the thing, Cenk (hereinafter referred to as Tubby)... "The Young Turks" is a corporation, right? You straight-up say it is in this video. You say you don't think corporations have basic human rights, but I don't think you've really thought this through, Tubby.

The Young Turks (hereinafter referred to as TYT), as a corporation, because corporations are people, has a First Amendment right to make videos proclaiming their corporate views. These happen to be your views, made easier to disseminate by virtue of TYT being a corporation and having corporate resources.

TYT also has other rights that we grant to people. Like the Fourth Amendment right to protection against unreasonable search and seizure, and the Third Amendment right against forced lodging of troops.

If corporations have no such rights, Tubby, then you can't object to the idea of federal officers strolling into your studio and telling you, "We're just gonna take away your cameras and your furniture, now. We can sell those to fund our operations. You guys can still use your personal iPhones to film your show while sitting on the floor, right? Oh, and by the way, we're also gonna keep some agents housed here in your studio, just to see if you have or will obtain any other assets we can sell to fund our bureau."

You couldn't object to that, now, could you, Tubby? After all, corporations are not people and thus do not have the same basic rights that people have.

We had a similar situation here, quite recently. Sluggish start, dim lights (sometimes!) and then 'alt' idiot light coming on... (again, only sometimes).

Took it to autoparts store for testing. Battery OK, alternatore OK, they said. So, replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner assembly, thinking "okay, intermittent belt slippage" and that that would fix it. [Battery only a couple years old, car >20years.]

A week later-- hubby was driving and-- pfft! Dead on the road. Nuthin'.

Put a new alternator in it, gave it a jump and No Problemo since.

Ha! I've had that callsign since before the current war started. Holy shit I'm old. But I have been trying to get away from using it. Some.

Sortof unrelated story - spent my free time in the last couple of months learning civilian multi-engine flying. School I've been using also does Navy's IFS (Initial Flight School? I don't know, Navy students get about 15 hours light civil before they start real flight school.) Got to know a few instructors, and the girl that runs the desk. She's really cute, btw. Nervous as shit before my checkride, because it's the first civilian checkride I've done since 1996. Mention this to the girl. She says, "that's funny, that's the year I was born." Holy shit I'm really old. But honestly, gives me a little hope about this coming generation - she's a couple of years out of high school, and pretty much running the flight schedule where future warriors start out. I was impressed when I thought she was mid-20s. Much more impressed now that I know how young she is.

516 rhomboid, that worked out better than I ever imagined it would. They bumped up the retirement age, so lots of guys stuck around, but there's a huge wave of mandatory retirements coming in the next few years. And then they cranked the entry requirements way up, so very few people qualify straight out of college. I got way more than I ever expected out of my last set of orders, so I'll end up around 2400 helo hours and almost 1000 fixed wing, most of that high-performance turboprop. I can't go to a major just yet, but the regionals will almost be fighting over me. And they'll pay for my training.

On what equipment/airframes do you hope to secure a seat in the cockpit?

Will you have to hire-on to fly the Embraer commuter jets, or go right to Boeing or Airbus?

Regardless, I'd love to be on board should you ever decide to fly a carrier pattern with the turn at the break.

532 Serious Cat -

The click is the starter solenoid (a relay or electrically-powered switch), which allows full current to flow to the starter - providing there is full battery current to be had. All the car's electrical devices, from lights and radio to fuel injectors and the starter, run on battery power; the alternator recharges the battery as the engine runs. If the battery is low on charge, there may be enough power to light up the dome light or engage the starter solenoid, but not enough to spin the starter motor for long, if at all. Since you have a newer battery, it's likely the alternator is bad and won't charge the battery; the fluctuating lights point toward this as well. However, a bad starter will cause the above symptoms, as it will drain the battery in its attempt to spin up. It too can be tested on the bench at Advance or AutoZone, but has to be removed from the vehicle first. I've changed all these items in the street, but I had tools and an F350 that was easy to crawl under. Ask around at the parts place who they would take their car to if they had to; the NAPA parts houses cater primarily to pro mechanics and serious DIY types, so you may get better advice there. Good luck.

And find every other old rusty tool around the house & garages.

562 I'm having issues with my car not starting. Back in November I had to get it jumped, took it into the shop which said the battery was bad and replaced it for a cost of $179, even though I replaced that battery less than three years ago. Last week it happened again. Took it back to same shop and this time they said nothing was wrong with it. Tested the battery, cables and alternator and charged me $36. Tonight, one day after picking it up, it again is not starting. What gives? One clue is that when it does start, the headlights and dash lights fade in and out for a few minutes.

Posted by: Serious Cat at December 30, 2016 11:05 PM (Uy6ri)

Job number one: find a different shop. They sold you a battery for about half again the price of decent battery, cash and carry at an auto supply store, and they never fixed the underlying problem. And thirty-six bucks for a test that most Autozones do for free? Sheesh.

Could be something as simple as a loose alternator belt.

590 About that charging thing. On at least some Nissan models, the charging is controlled by an ECM which initially had a bug in the software. The bug caused faulty charging, which led to dead batteries and premature failure.

Unless the module is re-programmed, the failed battery syndrome will continue, but without consistency. A LOT of batteries have been sold to Nissan owners.

The good, they die young, it seems:

Black Mountain - Judith Ann Thomas Gulick, a child beloved of God, born in the South Texas farming community of Taft to Cody and Lucile Thomas on February 26, 1955, passed away from Alzheimer's on December 26, 2016. Judy was sister to Bill, Burt, and Brian, valedictorian of her 1973 high school class, graduated Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas in 1977. She was an active member of Delta Zeta and earned her CPA. Judy held a number of accounting positions before and after raising her family.

In 1983, Judy married Dale Eugene Gulick in San Antonio. They moved to Austin in 1985. In 1987, Nathaniel was born, followed in 1989 by Morgan. Both sons are computer programmers. At the time of her passing, Judy and Dale had been married 33 years.

Although her greatest ambition was to be a mother and raise well her children, throughout her life, Judy found ways to make a difference, whether it was organizing the elementary school track and field days or running the middle school store or helping her church through hard financial times, saving it from bankruptcy, or just the endless hours and miles spent driving Morgan and Nathaniel to gymnastics practices. Judy met opportunity with a smile and her sleeves rolled up.

Judy was an avid quilter who enjoyed reading and hiking. In 2015 she and Dale retired to Black Mountain, North Carolina where they built a home in the mountains she loved, and true to form, Judy was there, varnishing window frames and installing hardwood floors—it is who she was.

Proceeded in death by her parents and brother Burt, and survived by her husband and sons, Nathaniel's wife Serena, and their son Gareth, Judy's brothers Brian and Burt, and Dale's brother Karl and sister-in-law Suzanne.

Just saw it. I don't think she threw the fight. The unprepared thing may be more on the money. She should have seen this coming... it was a replay of the Holm fight. It was obvious from before Holm that her weakness was in stand up stoushes. Everyone had tried to get technical with Rousey and you're not going to win a wrestling match against her. You gotta finish her in the first minute or so, with hard strikes to the head. Forget everything else. It looks like Rousey's either done nothing to plug that weakness, or she can't match it with a heavy early striker.

It looks like Rousey's either done nothing to plug that weakness, or she can't match it with a heavy early striker.

Yeah, I think so. What was interesting and gives me pause is that Nunes didn't even have to do much in takedown defence... Holm used great TD defence to avoid getting into an arm wrestle with her before smashing her at a range that suited Holm. Nunes didn't even have to do that that... just clobbered her and game over. Rousey's had a year to fix that shit and it looks like she hasn't.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Rousey made a few perfunctory attempts, but she didn't seem to have any aggression at all.

Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at December 31, 2016 04:12 AM (FYrz1)

661 You have to blame the UFC for pumping up Rousey with weekend warriors and avoiding challenges. They saw a potential great white "surgically enhanced" pretty face and used her as their golden goose. She is a horrible striker and cannot denfend herself from strikes, which is half of MMA. She can grapple and has the arm-bar but that's it.

The competition finally caught up with her and The UFC. She looked scared to death before the fight. It was over before it started. She refused to defend herself except by blocking punches with her face.

The UFC played people by propping her up. They sank to Don King territory with boxing tonight. Dana White knew She. Would get destroyed and so did Rousey hence the 3 million to come back to throw a fight. The talking points and spin was prepared by the UFC and Dana White.

She took a dive. And she embaressed herself and Dana White while doing so. Calling not being ready or whatever but if she really wanted to fight after a year for the title, it would not take 3 million plus riipping off companies for endorsements. She ran into 27 punches in 48 seconds and took minimal damage to her surgically altered feminine new face. She walked away with zero press conference before and I doubt she said much if anything afterwards.

This fight was 100% about her brand and about Dana White milking her one last time. She destroyed her brand by not even fighting or defending herself. It was embarrassing. Dana White and the UFC should be ashamed of themselves as they own it too.

A bad night for competitive sports with that showing.

667 In July 2016, Marshall proposed a principle of political analysis, "...if I figured out the stupidest possible scenario that could be reconciled with the available facts and went with it, that almost always turned out to be right,"[25] for which his friend John Scalzi coined the name "Trump's Razor."

I think I see how that works:

fact: Trump won.

scenario: Putin hacked the voting machines.

If only journalists would stick to facts and stop trying to come up with "scenarios", stupid or otherwise.

Something more is at play. I think she never wanted to come back and go Hollywood but was pressured by Dana White, The UFC, her brand, for just one more fight and instead of fighting one last time, it almost comes off like she threw the UFC and Dana White under the bus.... And herself.
