Baby It's Cold Outside Open Thread

It was a little cold here this morning at the crack of dawn. The rest of the day hasn't been much better.

Stay warm and conversational until The ONT shows up.

That's not so common, at least in my area.

Can I get some electrical advice...?

The power to have my condo just went out and I'm not sure its a problem with my electrical or a local, partial power outage. (I was using a hair dryer and had a space heater going at the time). One of my circuit switches keeps breaking, but it just says "light receptical" and would a single circuit cover an entire bedroom and bathroom? I'm thinking if opening the circuit box myself and switching out that curcuit for one that's labeled "whirlpool", which I do not use.

Any tips?

turn off the main power supply first.

have someone standing by with a long wooden stick or pole to disconnect you, should you manage to still zap yourself.

make sure the two circuits are of equal rating.

also, if the circuit keeps popping, it's because you have a short someplace, and swapping breakers likely won't help./

personally, i'd call an electrician, but that's just me.

97 My first car was an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. Black with red interior. Bench seats. A tape deck that would eat tapes. Leaked oil like a sieve. When it was cold enough you had to jam a screwdriver in the choke plate to get it to start. I remember one time driving back to school in the dark, all the lights on my dash went out.

God, I loved that car.

99 CaliGirl, back in the late 1970s/early 80s when the American automakers were literally gasping desperate to stay in business, GM released a line of 'X-cars' and Chrysler (which was in really bad shape) released their 'K-cars.'

They were frankly ugly, boxy things with just barely enough features or power to get you from point A to point B. But they were cheap, and I think GM and Chrysler were willing to finance anything with a pulse. So they sold somewhat.

Any tips?

Posted by: Serious Cat at December 18, 2016 07:07 PM (Uy6ri)

Second @90 -- and, since he can walk you through it, I'll let him. But the answer to your question is: condos tend to be built with an eye toward low-cost, so yes it is entirely possible -- even likely -- that a single circuit was used by several rooms.

120 From a now-deleted page at the Subaru corporate Web site:

"The first president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), Kenji Kita, had some definite opinions on the subject of automobiles. "If you're going to build a car, build a full-fledged car." "Japanese cars should have Japanese names." Mr. Kita was ardent about producing passenger cars and was the most passionate of all about the 1954 prototype of the Company's first passenger car, the P-1.

Mr. Kita canvassed the Company for suggestions about naming the P-1, but none of the proposals were appealing. In the end, Mr. Kita gave the car a beautiful Japanese name that he had been quietly cherishing in his heart --- Subaru.

Subaru is the name of a star cluster in the Taurus constellation. Six of its stars are visible to the naked eye, but about 250 bluish stars can be seen if one uses a telescope.

In the West the cluster is called Pleiades, in China, Mao, and in Japan, Subaru ("to govern" or gather together"). In Japan, it also goes by the name Mutsuraboshi ("Six Stars"), under which title it appears frequently in very old Japanese documents such as Kojiki and Manyosyu and literature such as Makura-no-soshi. Clearly, this is one of the clusters much loved by the Japanese from ancient times. Interestingly enough, FHI was created by the merger of six companies, so you can see what a truly evocative name Subaru is."

I had a problem like this once, and the cause was a long circuit with multiple GFIs. One goes, and nothing downstream of it gets power any more. Search your entire place for GFIs (usually near a sink), and hit RESET on all of them.

That shows how much cars have improved over the years. Yours was 7 years old when you bought it, and it only lasted another year.

I bought a 1991 Toyota Corolla in 1999, and kept it for 15 years. I finally got rid of it when the body rusted out to the point where it wouldn't pass inspection, but that engine had another 100,000 miles in it, easily.

222 And, to answer your question as to whether one cir uit wold cover a bathroom and bedroom. Sure.
Most post-war house might have 4 rooms on one 14 amp circuit.

When I wire a flip house or new construction, my rule of thumb is "no more than 11 devices" on one circuit. Switch, receptacle, light, fan, etc.
GFIs, witb the exception of the 2 req'd kitchen circuits, go on a single 20 amp circuit in most homes (latest National Electric Code call for one protected circuit on the front & back porch, garage and bathrooms/wet applications).

Open your breaker panel take a look at the panel

List out how many breakers and what their amp ratings are.

You will have 15amp for standard circuits like overhead lights and room outlets.

You might have 20amp circuits for specialty items like window air conditioners.

You might have some double pole 220 30, 40, 50amp circuits for clothes dryers, ovens, heaters, etc.

You might have few circuits and may be overloading them.

A little more info would help.

You can winterize the house. My mother has the water shut off to the house at the street, turns all the faucets open, flushes toilets and pours RV antifreeze in all the drains and toilet bowls. Sets thermostat to 55.
Our house we had a plumber install valves so that we can turn the water off and pump RV antifreeze into the pipes throughout the house. Antifreeze in drains and toilet bowls. We turn the heat completely off. We don't have to worry about a prolonged power failure resulting in freeze damage.

Yes rooms are generally on one branch circuit breaker. Many times a bath and bedroom are on one branch breaker. Check your breakers to see if one has tripped. If so, unplug your heater and hair dryer and then reset the breaker. Push in the position it is in and then the other way. If you have a problem in the bath or kitchen it could be a GFI outlet. Find that outlet, unplug your appliance(s) and hit reset. With your level f electrical knowledge do NOT attempt any rewiring in the breaker box.

388 Yeah, a caballero is literally a horseman and/or knight --- it's a cognate with French chevalier and English cavalier/cavalryman.

Nowadays "caballero" usually just means "gentleman" and does not imply horsies or a noble bloodline.
"Damas y caballeros" is the Spanish equivalent of "ladies and gentlemen."

Not that cis-gendering like that is okay, mind you.

Does anyone have any ideas about a lotion applicator, similar to a back scratcher but with a lotioning pad that is available to buy or build?

I've thought of simply impregnating a cloth pad with lotion and using my back scratcher to move it around but there's no grip to hold it - like an alligator clip - and the waste of lotion would be costly as the stuff is about a buck an ounce.

Thank you in advance!

445 428 Grippe is another word for the flu (I assumed that word was brought over to English by the Normans). Grippe is French for influenza.

Posted by: logprof at December 18, 2016 08:56 PM (GsAUU)

In conversational California Spanish, it's used as a generic ailment -- similar to English, where "stomach flu" is a bacterial gastrointestinal ailment wholly unrelated to the viral respiratory illness that is influenza.

Spanish has a lot of regionalisms that aren't generally taught well. Using "pajaro" for a generic bird; which verb to use for drinking, etc.

456 CaliGirl, one of the things to do is start looking for cognates in English and Spanish, a lot of the vocab is from Latin and French, which is cousin to Spanish.
Look into Grimm's law about the changes in European languages and focus on the changes between English and Spanish and French.

People get tied up in the various verbs, but to start with only worry about present, past and future, and leave the others be for a while. No one really uses subjunctive for example

for pronunciation the V and B are pronounced identically, and depending on the regional accent it is a non-plosive, voiced "B" sound
(and example of an English non-plosive voiced versus plosive voiced consonant is the difference between K and hard G: as in "Card" and "Guard"

One of the easiest native speaker spelling errors is substituting the V for a B. It is funny at times, like the sign that is supposed to say "Don't dump garbage" (No botes basura) that is turned into (No Votes Basura) "don't vote for garbage"

459 OK, I owned a car named Tiger. Sunbeam Tiger, 1965, tiny British sports roadster with a Ford 260 V-8 engine and four-speed manual. You could put it in first and take it to 50, stick it in second and go up to 75, slip into third and to 100, and THEN drop it into high and it would throw you back in your seat. Those things ate 'Vettes for lunch and spit out the plastic bits. Great times. Late one night after a few glasses of adult beverages I drove it up Lake Shore Drive in Chicago at 100 m.p.h. Exactly... it's how regular people talk, not the very formal kind of speaking.

Just like we say we're sick, or don't feel well more than we say we're ill. Just less formal, although gripa in general I do think means flu.

I usually heard people say enfermo more when they were talking about someone else who was sick, especially if they were seriously ill or in the hospital.

Spanish is pretty ay to pick up, once you get your tenses and conjugations down, it's mostly just vocabulary.

But the pure Castillan Spanish most of us are taught in school is much more formal than what the average person speaks IRL

I'm sure it's been answered already, but if you are using a 1500 watt space heater on 110v ac, you're already over ten amps when it's on high.

Add your hair dryer, which is itself a mini-space heater, and you'll blow a 15 amp fuse every time.
Without the lights on.

You can figure for yourself if you look at the products themselves. Electrical appliances will have the draw listed on a silver plate/sticker somewhere on it.

As for using something labeled whirlpool, that is probably wired for 220v, so swapping that out is not going to work.

Turn off the space heater while using the hair dryer and problem solved. No need to make life more difficult than it needs to be.

I would avoid gauze because it will absorb too much of the costly lotion.

I would instead use a ziploc sandwich baggie cut it two pieces.

The plastic will ADSORB the lotion instead of absorbing it, thus not wasting any upon application.

I too was underwhelmed.

Ditto. Pretty depressing and nothing like the first except the costumes.

Was the Durante photo the one of him and the little girl looking up at the camera?

607 I like the idea someone mentioned earlier of using the back of a long-handled spoon. That should do the trick.

Unless you have severely restricted arm motion, the few inches afforded by the spoon handle should be enough to reach the problem area.

It's too fresh for my personal taste, but it wasn't bad for a Celbuscent!

611 If you really want to get rid of the itch, wouldn't a cheese grater work?

612 Common Era. Sort of.

613 Insty has a link for a video of Hollywood B listers trying to sway the Electoral College to the dark side. I recognize most of them. Some of the young ones..who the hell are they? The shocker though, is Loretta Swit who has had so much plastic surgery as to be the embodiment of her character's name, "Hot Lips". There are no words to describe the mess she's made of her face.

615 Was the Durante photo the one of him and the little girl looking up at the camera?

He has a cup of coffee and is beside the little girl in a wheelchair. It ran five columns in the NYT and everywhere else.

And this is probably willowed.

Who are the NFL coaches you are GLAD got fired?

Can be from any time.

617 Yeah, the old cheese grater solution - The Final Solution. I'm saving that for last.

The spoon idea is as simple and utilitarian as anything and I do like it. No cost, easy clean, specific application amounts - good idea! Thank you all except that sadist t-bird.

622 An American Commoner, both an old GF and my sister were on Ribovirin and interferon as part of a treatment for Hep C.

I hope you are doing better than they were in their treatment.

623 American Commoner, I don't know if you'll see this since the ONT is up now, but I wanted to say thanks for the scent recommendation. I'll keep a nostril out for it.

624 Even better than city/animal car names - put anal in front of any Ford model. Don't get me wrong I like Ford products, but its comedy gold. Anal Ranger, Anal Probe, Anal Galaxie.
