Thursday Night ONT - One Day Until the Weekend!

Hey gang, it's time for the ONT!

Alamo 1.gif

Cabinet Positions

We're now in the silly season of media hysteria about Trump choosing his cabinet. Frankly, there's a lot of purity signaling on the conservative side as well. “We can't have Romney! He's a RINO loser!” It's stupid. Trump is going to be the one setting the tone for his administration, and he more than any president since, well, the last one, but before that any of them, needs capable people who understand the Byzantine labyrinth of government. This should be one of his strengths as a CEO, good CEOs find the best people and use them to their own ends. If Trump thinks Romney is the best person to achieve his (Trump's) ambitions at Treasury, then he should have Romney.

In any event, the biggest single choice facing Trump in the early days of his administration is going to be Scalia's replacement (and credit where credit is due, the Turtle didn't waver and confirm Garland. I would have never believed that he wouldn't in a million years). One name from Trump's list that gets near universal acclaim on the right is Texas Supreme Court Justice Don R. Willett. The day after the election I was walking around singing (to the tune of Kidnap The Sandy Claws) “Nom-inate Don Willette, put him on the Court. Leave him there for 40 years, fixing all the torts”. I got some looks.

Don Willett's Quiet Revolution

I like this quote:

“What you don’t know with Willett is whether a decision like Patel is kind of the camel’s nose under the tent,” said Sandy Levinson, a left-leaning professor at the University of Texas Law School who admires Willett’s legal thinking, if not always his legal conclusions. “Is he going to keep going on and on with this opinion and become far more interventionist? If it is the camel’s nose, then maybe the safest thing to do is not give him the first inch.”

Evil.jpg

Give me a break. The left has been using the court to advance their terrible social engineering in favor of big government for generations. If it takes an “ interventionist” to undo that, then I'm all for intervention.

Troll Level: Master

Music

Did you know that YouTube has compilations of the top songs of each year going back decades? For example, here it is from my birth year:

Not bad. Some hippy dippy shit in there, but some solid songs too. I much prefer this one from the year when American civilization reached its peak. The men were more virile, the women hotter and the national mood was one of crushing our enemies, seeing them driven before us, and hearing the lamentations of their women.

ISIS Update

Who's fighting whom in fight for Mosul?

According to that, upwards of 90,000 troops are trying to defeat 5,000 ISIS fighters. Sure. If that's the correlation of forces, and ISIS hasn't been defeated yet, then I think the appropriate word for the situation starts with “cluster”. But I think we all knew that already.

Some Kind of Star Trek Video

Boy, the writers of Voyager were even less imaginative than TNG's with their incessant technobabble.

News You Can Use (In Germany)

Man cheats recycling machine out of €44k with one bottle

I can't imagine that kind of effort is easier than just working for a living. Way back in 1985, a guy from North Carolina showed me how to “ching” money out of car wash change machines. I never did it because, well, it was stealing, but he was at least getting $20 worth of quarters at a shot. All that work for a couple of cents? Smh.

Oregon Man?

Oregon man reportedly dies trying to 'hot pot' in Yellowstone hot spring

Ya know, there are plenty of places where you can go soak in hot springs quite legitimately. Cave and Basin in Banff, for example. I've been there, it's lovely. And I didn't get dissolved by acid either. I'm just sayin'.

The Cremation of Sam McGee

By request from last night's ONT.

“There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee. “

Millennials Are In Election Hell Because Politics Has Become Their God

Pullquote:

Voegelin identifies six characteristics of the gnostic psychic mechanism. (1) It begins with a dissatisfaction with one’s situation. (2) Lacking a doctrine of original sin, the drawbacks of one’s situation are attributed not to anything in him, but rather to the constitution of the world, or even nature itself, at a minimum to the intrinsic corruption of the world’s systems and institutions. (3) Contrary to all evolutionary evidence, but faintly recalling the paradisaical Eden of traditional religion, the gnostic “just knows” salvation is possible, that the world can be changed into something special. (4) For this salvation to occur, the order of being itself must be changed in a historic process. As Voegelin writes, “From a wretched world a good one must evolve historically.” (5) This historical change in the order of being lies within the capacity of human action. (6) Knowledge, or gnosis, here becomes the central concern, for only one enlightened about history’s proper course can help spearhead the world-historical change.

You Are Still Crying Wolf

I think from the tone of this piece that the author is a leftist, or at least a liberal, but it's an unflinching (and LOOOONG) look at the reality of the election that the left refuses to see.

This is *really sad* news about actress Shelly Duvall, who was in Nashville, The Shining, and Popeye, among other hit flicks of the 1970s and 1980s. And of course Dr. Phil is exploiting the crap out of her situation. (Link to Us Magazine.)

Duvall is so severely mentally ill at this stage, she believes Robin Williams isn't really dead ("he's shape-shifting") and that the Sheriff of Nottingham is trying to get her.

38 "Millennials Are In Election Hell Because Politics Has Become Their God"

-----------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I've been thinking a lot about this. Belief in God is an evolutionarily adaptive way of thinking: It allows one to cope with the vicissitudes and chaos of a changing environment by giving up one's psychological need to control one's environment.

So when this belief is blocked, it is usually replaced by a belief in government to control the aspects of life that we can't handle. Well, that's fine...up until the government is controlled by those you perceive to be the bad guys. Then your belief system has to do a 180.

This must be psychologically painful for these people. Their god has turned into their devil. Thus the public beating of breasts and rending of garments.

It would be so much more evolved to just go to church on Easter and Christmas, methinks.

42 Someone said in the last thread that Obama will have countless streets, schools, airports, libraries, and outhouses named after him.

Some of them, of course, will be in lily white areas like Brattleboro VT because the lefties there will have to virtue signal. But it would be more fitting if "Obama Sts." ends up being like the MLK Drives in every major city - a surefire way of knowing it's a crap neighborhood. Like Malcolm X Park in DC - a place you don't want to find yourself after dark.

I can hear the news reports now, "Two students shot each other in a gang dispute at Barack Obama High School on the South Side of Chicago."

"The drive by shooting, which killed one and injured 2, occurred on Barack Obama Blvd in Baltimore..."

61 All Hail Eris, it is true. It's in Vincent LoBrutto's Kubrick bio.

Stanley was irritated with Shelley's acting on The Shining, because it was obvious to him she wasn't really afraid. On top of that, she kept pestering Kubrick: "What did you think of that take, Stanley? What am I doing wrong?? What do you want me to do???"

Kubrick HATED that. He wanted actors who were professional enough to know what they were doing, to trust themselves, and to *really* know the source material. He could tell Shelley didn't really, and was relying on him to do *her* homework.

So Stanley went to work trying to make Shelley feel like she figured her character must feel: isolated, alone, left out, and ultimately, scared. He went out of his way to pal around with Nicholson, be friends with him, call him such a great actor. And to Shelley, he was an eyerolling, controlling jerk. At one point, the famously UNemotional Kubrick even yelled at Shelley "we're fucking killing ourselves out here, and you're got to be ready!"

Kubrick also told all of the case and crew, "don't be nice to Shelley, it' doesn't help YOU."

Posted by: garrett

Really. Just try going a few days without cleaning the litter box. Boy, will the cats let you know how unhappy they are, and your house will smell of cat urine.

Cats and dogs are different kinds of pets.
Some cats can be great little companions, and very affectionate and friendly. Or very playful and mischievous, and entertaining.

Dogs can be playful and endearing, but will likely be more closely in tune with your emotions. Most dogs can sense if you are happy or unhappy. They seem to be able to understand a lot of human non-verbal cues. Cats don't get that.

133 Teena Marie. Had the one hit song, Lovergirl, in 85, but was otherwise a musician with limited success. She wasn't a star, but she earned a living. And then, out of the blue, thwack.

In 2004, while Teena Marie was sleeping in a hotel room, a large picture frame fell and struck her on the head. The blow caused a serious concussion that would cause momentary seizures for the rest of her life. On the afternoon of December 26, 2010, Teena Marie was found unresponsive by her daughter, Alia Rose, at Teena Marie's home in Pasadena, California. On December 30, 2010, an autopsy was performed by the Los Angeles County coroner, who found no signs of apparent trauma or a discernible cause of death, and concluded she had died from natural causes. She had suffered a tonic-clonic seizure a month before.

Dead at 54. Killed by a slow moving bullet in the form of a poorly hung picture.

176 Puddlegum, it's Meridian Hill Park in DC - according to wiki, it's "unofficial" name is Malcolm X Park. I heard so many people call it Malcolm X Park that I thought that it had been renamed.

It's by Adams Morgan, which is not cheap real estate, but I remember the park as definitely being a place to avoid after dark, which was too bad because it was pretty. Wiki seems to bear me out on this - it says the place was a drug dealer hangout until renovation efforts began in the early 90's. (Bear in mind that I moved out of the DC area in 1996, and really didn't hang out much in Adams Morgan in the 90's, so my memories are evidently dated.)

I'm sure that with all the money that has flowed into DC since I left, there are areas that I remember as being pretty iffy that are now OK. 14th Street was rough all the way to Logan Circle - I lived on Mass. Ave near there and used to see hookers and step over syringes and used condoms on the way to the Metro. Let's see - 8th St. SW by the Marine Barracks was another place you didn't want to find yourself after dark, even with the Marines right there. And I lived for a while at 10th and A NE on the Hill - nice until you got past Lincoln Park. And people I knew still got mugged even in the nice areas. I know someone who was held up at gunpoint on East Capitol about 2 blocks away from the Supreme Court.

Marion Berry's DC was a scary place sometimes. Hell, DC is still scary, but presumably for somewhat different reasons.

309 Sup yo,

So I was reading Stephen King's novel 11/22/63 (the one Hulu made a TV series on)...

In the book we learned Hillary Clinton not only became President in an alternative timeline, but was re-elected (oh and Maine became a province of Canada, because who the fuck knows why).

I kept thinking even in these fictional fantasies, it seemed that Hillary becoming President was only natural and the logical progression of history, and I bet other novelists probably had similar plot devices where she was President too, because they all assumed it was a given and would happen sooner or later.

Add to that mix all the Hollywood wet dreams where the plotline includes a female President who oddly enough, looked like Hillary. It was burned into our subconscious, like it was all inevitable.

Except...

HILLARY CLINTON WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, BECAUSE AMERICA, FUCK YEAH

That plus Trump, BIG-LY.

318 And seriously, if you want to buy a one-and-done washing machine.

Connect with the companies who sell and install the machines at your local laundrymat.

They'll sell you one without the coin mechanism. And in non-commercial use at the home, they'll last 20+ years, and even then, the only likely repairs will be something like a belt or spindle bushing.

A washer is a machine that simply doesn't need all the computerized friffery, auto-dispensing failure modes, and non-existent parts inventories in the repair industry.

It's like buying a digital crosscut handsaw.

And there are reasons that they don't make a digital crosscut handsaws. All of them good.

And none of them will be cheap. But, all of them will far outlast the consumer-grade, candy-apple painted ones that they sell under mood-lighting in the big box stores.

Plus you don't have to go to night school to learn how to program the damn thing.

Some of those newer machines are the very definition of Unneeded Complexity.

There was another good article a while back, I forget where, about how secular leftists made politics their substitute religion. But politics exists only in *this* world, the eschaton must consist of the transformation of this world. That's why when things don't go their way, the freak out and feel such despair. Their entire hope and meaning of life is bound up in the fleeting, uncertain things of this world.

Then they came to work the next day, and wondered why all the libs in the office were vomiting into the drain grate on the water cooler.

434 Evenin Horde of Tacular......

Go commercial grade on appliances when possible.

Ever noticed that since manufactured obsolescence became the norm no company makes a commercial like those ol Maytag ones?

Nobody makes shit to last anymore, poor margins......but some companies make shit for hard use and that translates into extended longevity under "normal" conditions.

Commercial vacuums are a good example.......buy the type a hotel maid uses, (they're generally repairable and very, very durable by design)......as opposed to a High grade home model in my experience.
(Gimme fuel there y'all)

Anyway, hope all's well with everyone.

Thanks WD for the excellent ONT. The Troll Master was tacotacular.

449 The true beauty of the recycling machine scam is that the perp is capitalizing on people's phony sense of environmental guilt.

If the machine were to pay out the actual fair market value for an empty container, instead of the grossly-inflated deposit sum, he wouldn't have done it, would he?

On the whole, though, i support container recycling deposits, because they help reduce litter, which is an actual problem, while gerbil worming is not.

82 was a pretty good year, all things considered. "Should I Stay or Should I go" by the Clash, "Electric Ave" by Eddy Grant, "Love My Way" by the Furs, "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow... stuff like that came out then when pop music was still transitioning from the 70's, before it went totally synth bop. 82 wasn't perfect, but as far as radio hits, go, it was pretty good... compared to what came later, anyway. I guess a lot of the good stuff didn't much of a look in from AM radio, though. Dunno.

484 Late as always to this party, but like many I literally couldn't bear to watch election night. Funny, most of the other guys at the range today were similar - they just hid as best they could.

I wasn't worried about dashed hopes. My "prediction" was unchanged since a few months before - either modest Trump landslide, or very narrow win for Her Heinous. 50/50.

Texts from east coast friend gave me first inklings (this was 8:30ish left coast time). When T-Rump had lead in PA, and most votes counted, I focused on one thing only - which counties were outstanding.

Once it was clear almost all precincts outstanding were outside Phila. or Pbgh., and T-Rump's margin was several 10s of 1,000s - I allowed myself to believe he had probably won.

Then switched on TV "news" for one of the first times in nearly a decade. Fox - wow almost everyone on stage was fairly stupid, so switched to CNN, where I was very amused by John King chomping at the bit to do what he had obviously been ordered not to do - call it for the scalp weasel. He kept going over remaining possible votes in PA MI WI and each time with more vehemence stating he didn't see how T-Rump's lead could be reversed.

Del,
Since it was the 90's, what was the color? We had the putrid avocado green from the early 80's for 25yrs. When it died, the replacement part was only slightly less than a commercial grade modern one. I know it won't last, but I'll be happy with 10yrs with the "new" one.

At least it isn't "interconnected" like some appliances. Talk about Orwellian....."You've consume 17 beers, .5gallons of Gatorade...etc..."
Datamine much......

These people are just as insane, and despicable or dangerous and anathema to civilization, as any kooky recluse in an Idaho cabin, or any of the remaining 38 members of the KKK.

Talk about "normalizing" vile pernicious mindsets and hate. These people are fanatical racists and totalitarians. And they are treated as more acceptable than the Klan? Why?

Certainly not because no chits can be cashed in from the now never president and it is cheaper to buy any other low ranking Congress person in office, not just waiting to run for office.

With regards to stress, I can't stress enough that finding a low-stress lifestyle will radically lengthen your life (says my *second* heart failure).

626 OK only the sketchiest of details, but becoming a foreign agent (a legal category, not an insinuation of treachery) for ..... Erdogan?

Unlike legal defense in criminal trials in the US, it is not the case that "everyone deserves representation" by a foreign (registered) agent.

Years ago I might have helped one prominent DC law firm (a lot of them do registered foreign agent work) avoid a very unseemly connection. One day a senior partner who'd always been friendly and curious (my office was in their suite but my work was completely unrelated) just dropped in, sat down, and asked what I thought about representing the Serbian govt.

This was when Milosevic was in charge of Serbia. Just before things got very bad and well-known in Bosnia and Kosovo.

I said something like "not with a 1,000-foot pole should you touch anything to do with Milosevic". He was sort of surprised by the categorical recommendation. His firm passed on the "opportunity", and he thanked me right after that for the advice.

Again - know nothing of the details. Yes, Turkey's an important country (and a NATO "ally"). But signing up as Turkey's agent any time in the last few years would be, to me, a big black mark in someone's record.

629 OK, I watched the 1967 and 1985 music compilation videos.

1967 was certainly one of the greatest years for music, but I'd give the nod to 1966. That was pretty much the peak for rock music, and the early psychedelic stuff was new, fresh, and interesting, before it became cliched. (I prefer the Beatles' "Revolver" to "Sergeant Pepper".)

For example, the 1967 Monterey Pop festival was greatly superior to Woodstock in 1969, musically speaking. By 1969 they were starting to sound jaded and were burning out from the drugs.

The 1985 video reinforced my impression that 1985 music sucked donkey balls, with few exceptions. That was ghastly to sit through. But it was a nice reminder of how hawt Madonna was back then, and Wham! wore "Choose Life" T-shirts, which would probably be considered a hate crime today.

My pick for the zenith of American culture would be 1965. That was just before the hippies, the drugs, and Ted Kennedy's immigration bill kicked in.

640 All senior govt. positions save FBI Director (heh) and Fed chairman serve at the pleasure of the president, and all incumbents routinely submit resignation letters (Obama WH requested they be submitted soon, I think - that's a bit earlier than usual, but it's all routine).

Brennan, Clapper, Carter - they and all the others will assuredly be gone, just as was the case with people in their positions in all previous transitions (when an incumbent is re-elected, sometimes even *then* there is a pro forma resignation ritual). Exceptions are rare.

George Tenet in 2001, for example. One of Dubya's worst decisions (eclipsed only by not letting George disappear after 9/11, as obviously should have happened). Powell and leaving Gen. Casey in place in Iraq (and then, FFS, making him Army CoS after the worst war-time command record since Frddendall or Westmoreland) are close seconds in this category.

656 Much talk here this season about bumper stickers, mostly the comparative scarcity thereof in contrast to previous election cycles.

So today at the range, truck parked next to my car has a sticker on the rear window: "Hillary Clinton Killed My Friends".

Um, huh? Actually, had an inkling what it might mean.

Sure enough. Former SEAL who knew both Woods and Dougherty (Benghazi). My buddy and fellow range officer (former SEAL) knew Woods a little (and the truck owner, quite well).

Anyway, not your typical bumper sticker. One imagines some irate cretinous Hillary fan confronting the truck owner somewhere. One further imagines the truck owner explaining precise meaning of such an incendiary bumper sticker. One finally imagines Hillary fan finding a way to walk away or otherwise defuse the situation.

662 That Hawking thing about the Higgs particle "destroying the universe" was just the media getting something wrong and going off half-cocked with it.

What he was talking about was the value of the "Higgs potential", which they were able to calculate when the Higgs boson was discovered.

That seems to show that spacetime and the quantum fields in it are in a metastable vacuum state. This is roughly like the concept of a local minimum. There is a lower energy state, the "true vaccum", which the current one could collapse into. There would be a little bubble spreading out at c, a wavefront of collapse expanding out through the universe.

If the vacuum collapses to its true ground state, then the physics would be different. The values of the various constants would change, and it would turn into a different reality.

Most physicists figure there's some unknown physics out there that makes our vacuum state be stable. The universe has processes that give particles energy orders of magnitude greater than anything we can do with the accelerators yet, and none of those have initiated the dreaded vacuum collapse.

IMHO, Hillary and the entire Dem structure are morally and criminally corrupt. Everyone associated with them is corrupt. It is only natural that the campaign would have to labor under that burden, no matter how much the media (also corrupt, at least philosophically corrupt) would help.

669 Clinton was a disastrous president in all meaningful respects.

The completely coincidental timing of a once-a-generation economic boom doesn't change any of this. His disastrous failures are too numerous and deep for a comments section.

His lack of ability - and the similar low capacity of his entire crew - directly and materially contributed to both 9/11 and the 2008 financial meltdown.

The world he did literally nothing to create (the "wonderful" one), he did much to destroy (the one that followed).

Of course I am completely excluding his unprecedented degradation of the office, and through his criminal activity exposing the collapse of the constitutional order (impeachment but no conviction).

Yeah, his administration had his fingers in some bad things. Federal environut land grabs, Janet Reno, putting US troops under UN command in Somalia, odd stumbling around on the Balkans. Net-net, on par with Bush 41 (though I doubt he could have pulled off the first Gulf War as cleanly), better than Bush 43, looks like the second coming of Jesus next to Obama.

You should because it's the truth.

Fanny Mae, run by Jim Johnson, became an autonomous investment house with Bill Clintoon's blessing in the 90's. Fanny Mae created the market for mortgage backed derivatives; without this para-governmental molestation, the mortgage industry would not have become the casino orgy that lead to the 2008 collapse.

Clintoon's CFA expansion was a minor but significant part as well.

Clinton had a strong opposition majority in Congress that drove nearly all of the positive choices he caved and signed on to. The lack of such with Obama is what enabled so much crap to rain down.

some GOP stalwarts claim it would have been so much worse if they didn't fight as hard as they did but this misses one critical difference. The 90s GOP congressional leaders didn't hesitate to take their battles public. The guys supposedly opposing Obama seemed to regard this a impolite and only those who paid close attention were aware of when executive overreach was curtailed, not that it was especially often.

Part of the problem was that so many of the same people didn't have a problem when Bush 43 did it, so they couldn't say anything when Obama did the same. Thus the need for a shakeup.

697 That "Top Songs of 1967" video was interesting, but yeah, about half of the songs included are clunkers. I wonder what criteria they used to determine "top"ness? I see that in the comments at YouTube people are also a bit mystified at the selection. Perhaps it was just raw sales figures, but even that seems dubious. I suspect it was just the opinion of the guy putting it together.

Anyway, 1967 was indeed a great year, filled with big hits and obscurities that were all great. I have a massive mp3 and record collection and there are tons of 1967s in there that were not in that YouTube video, but ought to have been.

Where to begin? Zillions of 'em. Here are just a few that would be on my "Top Songs of 1967" list which are not on that "official" list:

Cream - Sunshine of Your Love
Small Faces - Itchycoo Park
Beaux Jens - Trouble Baby
Sunshine Company - Back on the Street Again
Stone Poneys - Different Drum
E-Types - Put the Clock Back on the Wall
Lothar and the Hand People - Let the Boy Pretend
Tremeloes - Here Comes My Baby
Brenton Woods - Oogum Boogum
MC5 - Looking at You
...etc. etc.

I purposely emphasized the more well-known ones because the obscurities just look pretentious after a while, even though I prefer many of them. For every year in history, I have my own "personal hit parade," which makes me glad, because I can just listen to what I like, and discard the rest.

Posted by: zombie at November 18, 2016 02:02 AM (jBuUi)

698 OTOH, the music that topped the charts in any given year is frequently not that which produces the fondest memories of those years. Most of my all-time favorites are non-existent as far as Billboard cares, yet so many of those who had big hits then disappeared without a trace shortly after.

Throughout the whole 1970s, The Who only had two Top 100 songs.

Posted by: Epobirs at November 18, 2016 01:25 AM

Roughly speaking, the decade between the mid 70's to the mid 80's was when pop/rock was quite segregated, with AM and FM having totally different playlists and hits. There was some crossover, almost all being AM to FM. A lot of great stuff came out that didn't carve out a space on the "regular" charts, but managed to make a lasting impression. Although the 2 came closer together, somewhere in the mid 80's... the MTV effect continued to keep them mostly apart (videos were not cheap). As the 80's turned into the 90's, the overlap got greater.

Posted by: otho at November 18, 2016 02:04 AM (lmIoG)

699 Yep, a disaster in all meaningful respects. Being humiliated with an idiotic thing like Hillarycare, idiotically handled, was the pattern, not the low-point or exception (and the humiliation was epic).

In the first year the very dubious "surplus" was created by hugely larger than projected tax revenues (alone), Clinton's idiotic OMB Director (more famous for later making $100M !!!! destroying the economy via Fannie Mae's 2008 catastrophe) said in response to the House budget that no federal balanced budget could be achieved in less than 10 years without mass suffering and dislocation. It was balanced in less than a year, by itself. So no, the engineer who said the bridge was impossible to build does not get any credit for building it.

Clinton's fiscal irresponsibility and incompetence were - momentarily - obscured by *slight* House GOP restraint and a massive tsunami of revenue. Welfare reform was crammed down his throat, literally.

Foreign policy was a disaster, not just in the Balkans but in repeated inexcusable failure to deal decisively with AQ before you-know-when.

Bush 43 was vastly more successful in almost all areas (only exceptions were ones in which he adopted Clinton-like policies like NCLB, amnesty, and the disastrous TARP/etc. reaction to 200.

I've always been baffled by this mythical "trade-off" of Iraq support for (fill in stupid Dem policy here). The Dems were scared into supporting Iraq (recall the votes) by the echo of 9/11, and the price they paid for their initial moronic reaction (the 2002 mid-terms). No "trade-off" existed.

They of course infamously bolted the nanosecond things got the slightest bit slow or marginally challenging (like most of America, to be "fair").

The timeline and actual facts render the "trade-off" myth (dang near universally repeated) a baffling mystery. Recognizing it as a myth actually, paradoxically but accurately, makes both Dubya and the Dems look worse.

Whatever.

The Billboard chart is what the video is based on.

http://www.musicoutfitters.com/topsongs/1967.htm

That is what generated the money that year. A lot of the stuff that didn't chart made far more in the long term by power of endurance across a smaller demographic. How many people not old enough to have been paying attention then would even recognize 'To Sir With Love' as opposed to any number of Cream tracks. Of course, it helps that Clapton has had a substantial career post-Cream, drawing in new fans who weren't even born until long after that year.

Part of the reason why taking down the other hussein was so important was because, not only did it kick out one of the three major threats from the APM world, but it gave us a jumping off point to take care of Iran's nuke program. Bush never even came close to dealing with Iran, even as Iran had taken part in the Iraq

725 Oh, and for what it's worth, grunt-for-grunt and tank-for-tank our ETO army was never really very good. We got by on mass production and a lot of P-47s.

I disagree with parts of this too. Our grunts were every bit the equal of enemy soldiers with similar time in service, and our equipment, outside tanks ( which reflected a different philosophy than the Germans, one shared by the Russians who are universally lauded, BTW ), was superior to the Germans by 1943 at the latest, and probably by mid '42. But I'm not going to get into that long discussion this late at night. Lemme buy you a beer some day and we can relight the war until the cows come home.

726 War and had been attacking us - presenting any number of cassus bellii. But Bush was cowed by the left. He managed only to hold strong on Iraq but never move any further.

Bush blew it because he did the absolute minimum possible in reaction to 9/11 and then he got caught up in that imbecilic democracy crap.

727 "Too expensive to keep it going?"

I hadn't thought of that, but jeez, there's money there.

----------------

I mean can you imagine if she keels over here in the next two months and
it turns out to be from something that everyone knew she had, and they
were still trying to make her president.

Now I personally don't want that to happen to her. Because I want
her to see Trump become president, knowing that he beat her and she will
never be president.

Yeah, 1) that they were still trying to drag her across the finish line, and

2) She will never, ever be President. That kept her going for a long time.

Still thinking about that funny video with the trampoline, and Trump as the dog.

729 Did any of ya'll read that stuff about Hillary having a breakdown on election night? It's sort like the Ed Klein stuff. I'd like to believe it, but I'm dubious.

Anyway, she supposedly lost her shit when she realized she was likely going to lose and got violent, cussing out Podesta and some other guy. They had to forcibly restrain and sedate her, they said.

And that's why she wasn't in any shape to come out with a concession speech that night.

And they further say they had to give a shot of amphetamines to perk her up enough to do it the next morning.

Again, I'd love it this stuff were true, but I just don't know.

Ageeed, in retrospect, but I think Bush envisioned a homegrown revolution taking down Iraq a la Poland and the Solidarity movement. Remember, his dad was intimately involved in that triumph during the 80s. I'm not prepared to say he was wrong if the Green Revolution had had the support Reagan/Bush gave Poland. It certainly would have involved less loss of American life if it had panned out. Sadly, we'll never know now, will we?

737 Hillary still needs to be charged with any law breaking she has done. It's not enough that she lost the election. She is not above the law. Others are serving time for less than she has done. If she gets away with it what is going to deter others for not trying to do the same thing. Of course, Obama may pardon her. But that is just an admission she broke the law. And Obama may as well pardon himself because he knew what she was doing and did nothing about it.

Posted by: Case, Mors Semper Tyrannis at November 18, 2016 03:05 AM (rb1zT)

Obama may pardon Hillary. It will be his legacy; the only one of his actions that will be remembered by history.

Let him do it. Otherwise, Hillary needs to face justice.

I will accept either action.

739 Re Bush 43 and Iraq:

If you believe, as some of the Bush team did at the time, that it was a war as necessary as that being fought in A'stan, a war of necessity, then the timeline is unimportant. You have to do it and you do what you can.

If you believe, as I do, that it was a discretionary war, what I call a war of convenience - some say you don't fight those, they're morally wrong etc. My take is much more...

...let's remember Ulysses Grant thought the Mexican War was immoral.

My take is very utilitarian. You do not do it if you are not DAMN certain you cannot win it fast. Not cheap, FAST.

The Bush 43 problem is that Rumsfeld and his JCS sold him a lie. We needed 400K pairs of boots on the ground to occupy the place, and we had 180K or thereabouts. And Franks and the rest put them in hidey-holes for 'force protection'.

Maybe the 2003 force structure wouldn't have permitted a 400K occupation force. Rumsfeld's "you go to war with the force you have".

But maybe, if after a reasonable analysis the war's not that important, and you can't be absolutely certain of complete subjugation, you just don't do it?

Posted by: JEM at November 18, 2016 03:44 AM (TppKb)

740 Clinton's fiscal irresponsibility and incompetence were - momentarily - obscured by *slight* House GOP restraint and a massive tsunami of revenue. Welfare reform was crammed down his throat, literally.

759 Fair amount of talk way upthread about songs of different years. First thing I read before sliding to bottom of page a bit ago.
1967 discussed a bit so I looked up the top 100.
One thing I learned was those years have morphed together a bit on me. I would have bet "I Think We're Alone Now" was a year earlier,, maybe two.
I'll have to keep that in mind when recalling when things happened.

Second was a confirmation.
The greatest decade in popular music was about to really explode.
The diversity of great stuff, from folk, to rock, to R&B, to the stuff that would crossover back to mom's music ( think Bachrac/Warwick ) was incredible.
I was twelve in 67 and "forced" to take band in school.
Like I say almost every time we play "Mom",
Thank you mom.

780 Well the March is a 1st amendment activity, so if there's any way NPS can approve the permit, they will, but I'm highly doubtful. They're already starting to set up for the inauguration. There's no way everything will be broken down and the area back to normal less than 24 hours later. But how irresponsible to announce this march before even checking with NPS as to the likelihood of the permit being approved.

Posted by: biancaneve at November 18, 2016 06:33 AM (IKOfL)

Posted by: Jean at November 18, 2016 06:34 AM (2RVmA)

782 And here's a little factoid about how the Park Service's permitting office works:

Despite processing permits for thousands of event per year - marches, rallies, races, film shoots, weddings, etc - the NPS permit office does not have a software program to manage all this. There is no off-the-shelf software that meets their needs and they don't have the pull to have someone develop and maintain a system for them. So the calendaring system consists of several hinged whiteboards with calendar spaces mounted on a wall. The the first three of four whiteboards are for the current and next few months, with each month having its own board, and the back whiteboards are for later months which are combined.

When something is scheduled for a particular date, a post-it note with the details gets stuck on that date. Some of the dates will have a stack of post-it notes because there are multiple spaces in DC that NPS is responsible for. When you call to check on the availability of a particular location for a particular date, someone has to go to the calendar and look through all the post-it notes to find out if your desired location is available.

If you're ever told "I can't check right now because the system is down," that really means somebody else is standing in front of the whiteboards right now blocking my view.

And that's how government works.

Or, "If I rerouted the master bathroom sewer line into the HVAC, we'd finally get our own shit storm!"
