Monday Overnight Open Thread (9/5/16) [Mis. Hum.]

munich terrorist.jpg

It was 4:30 in the morning on Sept. 5, 1972, that 9 Israeli athletes were taken hostage after 2 of their fellow country men had been killed by Black September,a Palestinian terrorist organization. The 9 athletes and a West German policeman were later killed by the group.

A quick history lesson.

On 3 August 2016, two days prior to the start of the 2016 Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee officially honored the eleven Israelis killed for the first time. About damn time!

Labor Day Monday is winding down. Have you ever given thought as how Labor Day evolved? The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City.

Are you thinking about work today? Are you dreading about going to work tomorrow? Do you have fears about your job? Meet a woman with an unusual job and unusual fears. Batteries can be found everywhere.

Some of you work 4 day work weeks. Are they a bad thing? The people that I know and have met which work them, love them. However there is a professor from OSU who says 4 day work weeks are bad for your health.

Can something you make which produces happiness to you and others, is that a job?

Advice for working with others.

However, if you work for TSA you only have one job to do.

How the 5 day work week came about.

On September 25, 1926, the Ford Motor Company instituted a five-day, 40-hour work week for its factory employees. While Ford wasn’t the first to do this, they were arguably one of the most influential.

Labor Day for 94 million unemployed Americans. The working ones aren't doing that much better.

Thursday night is the NFL Opener. We have a pretty good idea how that game is scheduled. But do you know how the other 255 games are scheduled?

They are also constrained by internal factors. A formula determines each team’s opponents every year, and a rotating schedule ensures that every team plays each of the other 31 at least once in a four-year period.

It takes 136 computers in a secure room to spit out every possible schedule — a process that sets the stage for the schedule-makers to begin the arduous task of picking the best possible one.

The reset buttond didn't work. And the glow of golfing on vacation has worn off. Someone has to act presidential.

Obligatory slam at President 4Putt.

This guy knows who he works for. And it isn't Obama. Someone ought to tell TFG to pull up his big boy pants and act like a man rather than the petulant child that he is.

I worked today, after two days of abject laziness. I cut the grass and cleaned up leaves in the yard. (I have one tree that starts shedding in July.)

And in honor of General Strike Kitteh, I cleaned the litter boxes. From day to day I just scoop them and top them off with fresh litter as needed, but every now and then I dump the old litter, scrub out the boxes, and refill them with new litter.

48 I know how torturous music can be. My husband and I like the same music, mostly, but he likes it LOUD!!! He turns it up during a piano (volume, not instrument) part and then it stays that way until the next one, ever increasing in volume until it's at 11. And needless to say, all our vehicles and boat and everything are equipped with maximum speaker technology for this. It is agonizing, and my blood pressure skyrockets. Same with movies. I'd say that's our number one issue.

OTOH, there are worse things wives have to endure. I'm pretty lucky.

Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at September 05, 2016 10:44 PM (VxHD9)

64 A problem I've found with the 4-day shifts is if there's anything you need to do outside of work then it all has to get done on your off day. Not a lot of time left on your 10 hour days. But if you have a significant-other to do those things then it can be pretty nice like a 3 day weekend every week.

And problems can arise during crunch time at work or all the time if you're in a high pressure job when the 5th day just becomes an overtime day.

I leave work at 11pm. By that time, the last thing i feel like doing is going to the gym. If i do i usually get home about 1:30, then stay up a bit before bed and get up around 10.

Is it generally better to exercise in the morning, or can one work out that late and still get decent sleep? I can't make up my mind, then end up doing neither.

Thanks.

101 Ah, OT. A chance for me to post useless shit. The Expanse and The Magicians start next year on SyFy. Both shows are actually very good in spite slow starts. The Magicians have the hottest bunch of actresses I have ever seen on one show. I have no idea who they are or have I seen them in anything else but they are smokin'. It was got wonderfully dark and nasty the last few episodes.

The Expanse is actually very very good with some pretty solid acting for a SyFy show. Just be patient.

Hopefully for the third season they'll be greenlit to start preproduction earlier, and will have enough of a technological base so they save some cash.

138 I was fighting fire-ants late this afternoon. My sainted mother calls me, she noticed them in a loaf of bread in the pantry and then looked, and the were all over everything.

What got them was a box of opened cream cookies of some sort she'd had gotten. That got them started. They invaded an unopened loaf of bread, and ruined another box of crackers, but they hadn't gotten in anything else, all they were all over it.

I managed not to get bitten/stung once. Got the crap outside, then sprayed some ant killer. Then, we had to get them off the boxes.

Ants have a defense relflex where they all clump together (it protects them from drowning when a heavy rain floats them. Damn suckers did that, and I had clumps of fire ants dropping off everywhere.

Did I mention I hate fire ants?

149 Environmental manipulation creates a psychologically coercive environment for the detainee by forcing them to adapt to a series of small, seemingly invisible steps. Each step is sufficiently small enough that the subject does not notice the changes or identify the coercive nature until much later on, if ever at all. Not enough time to decompress, eat, shower, sleep, before *doing it all again.*

Here in Canada, oil rig crews work 12-hour days, for 7 days, do a "short-change" shift, and then 12-hours nights for another week. Then get a week off. First 40 hours per week is at regular rate, the second 48 is time-and-a-half. So they make plenty of money.

When I am out there, nominally, I'm on call 24 hours a day, but I can usually keep current by working 12 of them.

The guy actually ended up going crazy for real (they learned from a letter from the guy's family) so the Escape Committee banned anyone from trying to do it in the future.

174 This psychologist is well, an interesting character. Knowing how to break down a mind is good way to learn how to rebuild one. That's the kind of stuff he'll say.

It's basically a matter, according to him, of finding a person's buttons and pushing them.

Depriving people of human contact is a good one. He says that the human mind alone, will always goes off the rails. You need feedback from the group on what's not crazy. Leave a person alone for extended periods and the mind wanders. Off into crazy town.

Now, you just optimize that journey into crazy town.

He described various ways, and I can't remember them. But one was this. You're leaving someone isolated. Then you go in and be their friend, their best pal. They're so glad to talk to someone.

Then, in the middle of that, you pull out a pistol and snap it at their head. This is part of the way to induce paranoia.

Some of them also get into it because they want to learn how to manipulate people. (It sounds like this asshole falls into that category.)

I read many years ago that shrinks and psychologists are the medical people most likely to sexually abuse their patients. Not a surprise really when you consider they are dealing with screwed up and vulnerable people.

Interestingly enough, OB/GYNs were the least likely to have affairs with sexually abuse patients. I guess it would be pretty awkward to say to someone you've just had up in the stirrups "BTW, what are you doing this evening? Wanna go out for a few drinks?"

She did use to dig holes in the front yard about a foot deep and 8 inches wide hoping I would fall in and kill myself instead my dog fell in dislocating and breaking her back legs and hips when she fell in.

Also after a storm a tree branch fell on our fence, she asked me to go get it off when I got home. She purposely failed to tell me that the branch knocked the powerlines down in the yard. I came two inches from stepping on one. When I got back inside, she made sure to say that the branch had k idled down the powerlines.

Well, he did a little trick, getting me all wound up about something and about ready to hit him. That was just to show me how easy I could be manipulated.

I remember he told me that, Mr. Rational Mathematical Mind, I'd have you believing you were getting visions from the Virgin Mary and were on a mission from God pretty soon if I wanted to.

256 Here in Canada, oil rig crews work 12-hour days, for
7 days, do a "short-change" shift, and then 12-hours nights for another
week. Then get a week off. First 40 hours per week is at regular rate,
the second 48 is time-and-a-half. So they make plenty of money.

When I am out there, nominally, I'm on call 24 hours a day, but I can usually keep current by working 12 of them.

I have no doubt that these SJWs (who are mainly white kids from affluent families) would happily torture us wrong thinkers if they could. They wouldn't even need a threat.

And others would go along. That's the thing I dislike about Shirer's generally excellent tome "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" - his thesis was that the Germans were somehow uniquely morally flawed, due to a history of authoritarianism and the music of Wagner.

Many Americans, raised in a tradition of freedom, are not as different from the Nazi era Germans as they like to think.

This.

What happened in Germany could happen ... anywhere. In the USA, in the UK, anywhere, despite what residents of those countries think.

Germans were, as they saw it, faced with two choices: Nazism, or Communism. The Communists had already tried to seize power in 1919, and were bidding fair to succeed in early 1930s. They successfully physically intimidated all opposition parties, until the Nazis established the SA, after which the Nazis alone had street cred as the only party who could stand up to the Reds, and fight them toe to toe in the street.

Now, if you're a German in 1932 looking to the East, and not liking what you're seeing - and who would? - what choice do you have? A possibly bad choice, versus a certainly bad choice.

At the time, the full horror of the Third Reich was probably inconceivable. Just as now, the full horror of the alternative is inconceivable.

Rough-necking is very physical work, and it would kill me to do even one shift of it. I'm a wellsite geologist, so my work day consists of washing cuttings samples, peering at them through a microscope, and plotting my observations on a graphic log in a computer. Usually 2-3 days of scrambling to keep up in fast hole in the shallow portion of the well, then it slows down. When we go into the horizontal leg, I have a second man join me to work nights, so then we work straight 12's. But it's not physically taxing. I'm awaiting a new well right now, and, for various reasons, there will be two of us on right from the get-go.

The oilpatch is one of the few places left where a young man (or woman) can come out of high school and move into a job that earns some serious coin. Last I heard, starting rate for a roughneck here in Canada was $22/hour. No union dues, either. Now it may have dropped due to the oil price crash, and work is scarce. Last week the rig utilization rate in Western Canada was 22%. Meaning of the entire fleet of rigs, 22% had work.

It can be a tough life, but it certainly is lucrative. And usually there is a slow season, when one can take a few weeks off. If you put a little money away every pay check, you can soon build a nice nest egg, and still live well on the part you spend. Don't buy all the toys right away.

Some people have reported "hearing" radio programs via the fillings in their teeth. This isn't as crazy as it sounds. All you need to detect the modulation on an AM broadcast is a non-linear conductor, like a diode. A piece of metal (the amalgam filling) in an electrolyte (saliva) becomes a crude rectifier.

324 Look up the so-called "Voice of God Weapon". This is
a technology that supposedly can "beam" a voice in the head of a
person. You make him think God or Allah is talking to him.

Whether this exists or not, well, whether it's actually been used as a
weapon is sort of controversial. But the technology exists.

There may be several ways to do it. "All you do" is modulate audio on
top of something, high frequency sound, even EM signals that cause the
modulated signal riding on top to "rattle in your skull" correctly and
your ears hear the sound.

I'm not a big Ford fan, but not a Ford hater, either. I thought the 351 Cleveland was the engine of choice for the muscle-car guys, possibly better oiling system and better breathing. Windsors were the engine found in the bread-and-butter cars. And then there was the 351M (for Modified) which had some features of both, IIRC. Not that the Windsor could not be made into a high-performance engine, but most of them were not shipped as such.

I have a Ford Motorsport performance book around here that goes into considerable detail on all the engines of that era, but I'd have to search for it. I could do so if you wanted me to.

Yep. In a strong RF field, any semi-conductor becomes a detector. A bolt in a rusty nut will do it. The old-time crystal radios used a chunk of galena, set in a little lead puck, as the detector. Cooling issues, mostly. In both the oil and water circulation capacities.

Gets down into the weeds, in terms of casting wall thicknesses, oil and water passage areas, casting roughness, etc.

The differences were enough that the parts lists are different between the two, even though they were both said to derive from the same design specs.

Contrary to myth though, a Windsor can be made into a kick ass giant of a motor. Just costs more in the execution.

Yeah, I remember reading about "free power" radios. You had two crystal sets in one box, with the second set tuned to the strongest local station, with a diode bridge feeding rectified RF into a filter network to power a germanium transistor amplifier on the #1 set. Some builders claimed to be able to get enough power to drive a speaker.

The real bugbear with crystal radios, and I include the germanium-diode "rocket radios", is their almost-complete lack of selectivity. The term "tuning coil" is almost an oxymoron.

396 "However there is a professor from OSU who says 4 day work weeks are bad for your health."

If you read the article, ESPECIALLY for wimmens.

Bullshit!

"What, you workin' on Labor Day, Deety, huh?" (neighbor)

Yep.

"You don't get a 3 day weekend, do ya?"

Had nothing going last Friday. That's when I did the lawn and the windows and the deck, why?

It's gonna take me 4 hours for my regular gig, why not add on 3 extras if they are near where I have to drive anyway?

I'd rather PLAN to work 10-16 hours per day, EFFICIENTLY, M-TH, than dick around, driving back and forth to "spread out my projects".

I either get Friday's off OR I have room to maneuver.

It's kind of like and related to... Ace's fasting diet.

I don't DO breakfast, not when I've got a full day of working ahead of me.

Makes me hungry 3-4 hours later (for NO REASON other than I et BREAKFAST!), when I am in the middle of something!

Can't do "lunch" in the middle of a day, makes me sleepy. Keep GOING!

THIS is why a 4 day work week is AWESOME!!

Friday - ZZZZzzzz (maybe) Dream of lovely snacks and things to cook! Make a Totino's Pizza or a lot of salads. Snack on some olives. Tater Tot's w/ Kikoman's "Wasabi Sauce are the BOMB yo!

Saturday- Buy ALL of the SNAX like Bleu Cheese stuffed Olives plus "Ingredients", for cooking on Sunday!

Cats. The bane of people trying to get their ideas across for centuries. I've seen pictures of old medieval manuscripts that have a track of cat paws, in ink, across the pages.

I'm sure they used to make cuneiform and heiroglyphic carvers drop their chisels by running between their legs, too.

475 If Hillary were to keel over the next few weeks I have no doubt the Dems would be secretly rejoicing as they know what a disaster she is but are terrified of her and the Clinton machine. Not only that, those cynical crap weasels would be using her death to get people to the polls using "Win it for Hillary" or some other form of guilt. And of course, any criticism of insane Dem policies would be an attack on the sainted Hillary. (This tactic was used for decades after the Kennedy assassination as conservative were obliged to say wonderful things about JFK, and by extension the Dems. the MSM would use her death to be shoving microphones in the face of every Republican they could find to force them to say how wonderful Hillary was.

510 Those OK earthquakes aren't all that much. They don't seem to be the result of a fault line but rather the earth simply settling. If you've ever watched an old barn disintegrate you know it doesn't collapse suddenly. I just slowly lowers itself to the ground.

I think that's what's going on in OK. The ground is settling...and not just from recent fracking but maybe even from previous drilling which now has an avenue to settle, courtesy of the fracking.

I'm terrified of earthquakes but these scare me so little that I'm moving to OK.

Veteran observers may recall that when "we" were mining up there, in two long spells, it was the Worst Thing Evah for the worker, the consumer, the Earth, and what-have-you. But the new miner is 85% Chinese owned, so everything is different now.

A lesson to be learned: you may think you can leave your resources buried, as an offering to Gaia. But coal, oil, elements, crops, farm soil -- these are the things wars are fought over, and given a chance, someone, in this case the Big Someone, will go in there and get them. And you will toil for them to do so.

Also, VW buying Navistar, the old International truck company, for a paltry $200 million with an M. Obviously due to their outstanding diesel experience.

Unions have been spouting that lie for decades. And Ford wasn't the first one to do a 40 hour work week. And the 40 hour labor law was pushed through by FDR as a stupid scheme to increase employment by forcing companies to hire more workers to avoid overtime. Instead they fired more workers to make up for paying the new "overtime" costs.

536 One reason the 1920's era is so damned interesting to compare and constrast is Henry Ford. He was one v.odd bird by modern lights, and the union guys among others have never been able to make sense out of him. He was Progressive as hell in so many ways, yet saw himself as a kinda-sorta social conservative. Try as they might, the dot-com billionaire destructors just can't shake things up as hard or as deep as old Henry did - for good or ill. He was just all over the place.

He's the one who started all this Muslim inflow. Thought gold dust of 'em he did.
The way it was explained to me, it was the owner of the Sloan ("Silent Flush") Valve Co who turned him on to Elders of Zion and the International Jew. Up until then, Ford just hated all bankers.

Arlington, VA public schools (at least elementary schools) have a half day *every Wednesday* for an after noon of teacher work time --- this is so they spread their "teacher work days" throughout the year instead of tacking them on to the beginning or end of the school year. It was such a b#tch having to leave work early every Wednesday to accommodate this back when we were living there.

My HS had one principal with one secretary and a bunch of female student assistants who got credited for "secretary" type training instead of home-ec which they got instead of shop class.

The current HS there now has 5 principals and a whole office full of secretaries and typists.

Well, I buried my pool several years ago and it will be in the 90s here every day this upcoming week. We had our brief fall-like weather a little early and now it's back to hot until late September.

Jimmy Hoffa is buried in there, isn't he?

No, but I don't think the liquor stores close on Labor Day.

State stores do close (being state employees and getting those Federal holidays off). Not sure about private ones, like here in NYC.

Unfortunately he took the passing mention of Schlafly's support for Trump to exercise his NeverTrump monomania in an effort to detract from her memory. It did not go well, and a cob ultimately stepped in to tell him to knock it off. It was not fun.

585 Here in SC, the liquor stores close at 7pm on weekdays and are not open on Sundays (unless your Transient Occupancy Tax is high enough, e.g. tourist area).

Brisk business at the liquor store on Labor Day.
