an excuse to swear at Obama, which I can understand, but still, why would he have a chip on his shoulder about Obama? A guess? He was lashing out at America, because he could - just a power play. Under Obama there's no fear, so you can taunt, insult or provoke us (Russia fly-bys, Iran harassing our Navy, etc.) to show how tough you are. Obama likes to call it "punching above your weight." Willowed. Question about Duterte on the sidebar.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who threatened to "swear at" Obama if he asked about the Philippines' extrajudicial killings -- and then swore at him anyway. It sounds like Obama hadn't even done anything yet to provoke Duterte. But why would he have a chip on his shoulder about Obama? He's a bloodthirsty tin pot dictator of a third world sh*thole. Since the 1880s, the color black has been associated with anarchism. The black cat, in an alert, fighting stance was later adopted as an anarchist symbol. More specifically, the black cat, often called the "sab cat" or "sabo-tabby", is associated with anarcho-syndicalism, a branch of anarchism that focuses on labor organizing and the wildcat strike. Talk about contrast! I literally had just been looking at 'The Marriage at Cana' painting by Veronese in 1563 before opening this thread.
The Veronese is one of the most impressive paintings I've ever seen: brilliant color, each of the many figures is an individual, architectural accuracy, and an astonishing technical competence. These words are completely inadequate to describe such a masterpiece. You really should look up a copy that can be enlarged. The original is 22' x 32'. The viewer could spend days enriching his life by studying it. Then there is today's black and orange-ish mockery of art more appropriate for the Halloween edition of a bad pulp magazine. (Yeah, I know why it was chosen. Happy Labor Day, BTW.) The enormous gulf between the talent, vision, and spirit in these two images is frightening. In a baking pan, fill it 3/4 full of thinly chopped apples, dot with about a quarter stick of butter, sprinkle with sugar. In a separate bowl, mix about a cup or more of oatmeal with a cup or more of flour and a half cup of sugar, cut in a half stick of butter until it resembles crumbs, and spread over the apples in the pan Bake at 350F for 40 - 45 minutes If you use brown sugar it will have more caramel overtones, and if you apples are too sweet or bland try putting some lemon juice in on top of the apples before putting on the topping. I first got my ham license in 1970, when I was 14 years old. Was active until about 1980, then other things like school and life and marriage, took precedence. Got back into the hobby in 2010. Interesting to see the changes. First, the no-code license is blasphemy. I'm just sayin'. Second, the all solid-state rigs with digital tuning are pretty cool. The all solid-state KW amplifiers are also amazing to me. Third, it's amazing how dead the bands are. Back in the day, getting on 40 meters on a Saturday afternoon, there'd be wall-to-wall QSOs from 7200-7300. Nowadays, there's just acres of empty space. It gives me a sad. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson spoke over this past weekend at the annual Islamic Society of America (ISNA) event, greeting the participants warmly and telling them, Your story is the quintessential American story.
Extremist speakers at the ISNA conference at which Secretary Johnson spoke included Jamal Badawi, a founder of another Brotherhood entity, the Muslim American Society, and Nihad Awad, founder and executive director of the CAIR organization. CAIR, too, is a U.S. Brotherhood entity, and an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land terror financing case. Although the Post wrote that Johnson was the highest-ranking U.S. official to address an ISNA conference, this is incorrect; Clarion reported that U.S. President Obama himself addressed the 2013 ISNA convention and praised the group for its partnership with his administration. The Washington Post called Johnsons appearance an impassioned speech to empower ISNAs participants. The Clarion Project reports that ISNA is a group with Muslim Brotherhood origins and an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing trial. The Holy Land Foundation (HLF) was created by the now-defunct Palestine Committee, which itself was established by the Muslim Brotherhood to advance Hamass political and financial agendas in the United States. The H makes the N sound in Russian. And the B makes the V sound, so to write novo (new) you write HOBO. That's most of what little I remember. That story is almost the same story my parents told me how they got their 3 cats. In 2001 they had to put down their old Marmelade cat of about 18 yo. A couple weeks later they went to the shelter to get 2 cats. In a cage were 3 siblings. They picked 2. As my dad turned away he felt a tap tap on his back. It was the third kitteh sibling. They went home with 3. Someday if science can remove the 'kill gene' in big cats and replace it with a 'lap kitteh rub my belly and I'm happy' gene I want to get a Snow Leopard. The ham bands aren't as active as they were 20 years ago, that's for sure. Too many cell phones and digital distractions for newcomers and the youngsters don't take advantage of the digital modes. Doesn't help that this is the worst propagation I've heard of. Where are the sunspots when we need them?
I sometimes listen to the bands on an old Sony 2010 receiver. I was surprised how much CW there was. But I didn't hear as much rag chewing on 75 meters as there used to be. Those were usually older hams who may well be SKs by now. OTOH, a major disruption of cell phone service might spark new interest in ham radio. "I take malicious pleasure in WBTC, because it's one of the finest examples of tiresome, overrated hippies being as hypocritical as possible: a corporate-rock song condemning corporate rock. It takes gall by the gallon to sing "who cares they're always changing / corporation names" when you've changed the name of your own group three times. And having worked at a bar whose jukebox played that got-dammed "Go Ask Alice" - the Stoner's Bolero - at least twice a night, I had a deep loathing for Grace Slick, and seeing her overact in the video while having to sell lines like Marconi plays the Mambo was so, so satisfying." "They were Communists, Lee. They were red sons of bitches who should have died long ago..."
The "red scare" is over, since most people accepted the reds into our culture, even as the commie bastards made up the term "McCarthyism" to successfully smear McCarthy. The "commies" took over Hollywood and the MSM in many ways, but mostly the divide and conquer technique spawned all sorts of DC-centric corruption. So "Black Lives Matter" is more racist gangster anarchy, created by Soros money and Holder intervention in Ferguson. It is not communism, it is a tool to create instability. Of course the communism fairy tale is what Democrats preach all the time. The reality is there are always a few at the top that use the propaganda to use government as their enforcer for their graft. They should have died long ago, but they run DC and the media instead. But "socialist grifters" may be a better description. Posted by: illiniwek at September 05, 2016 11:48 AM (ZRaCn) 228

Remember Ace's post from earlier this week about knee-jerk responses and signaling what side you're on before giving it any thought. My addendum is leftist ideology requires that because it's all absurd. It's more than "I did not have sex with that woman" which is merely a deliberate misstatement of a fact (i.e., a lie). It's "It depends on what your definition of 'is' is." If you think about it, your mind becomes thoroughly boggled. Consider: Human activity is causing the sea level to rise. A person's sex is whatever they say it is. The Confederate flag has indirectly killed people. Only black people's lives matter. The first of these can be verified or falsified. If just 10% of NFL fans boycotted for one week by not going to or watching games this Kaepernick kerfuffle would be over by 2:00 Sunday afternoon. He would be standing at attention or sent packing and any other player that chose to make a "statement" would much quickly decide they have it pretty good in America. This crap festers and grows because fans put up with it and support it with their dollars.

Apropos of the whole "worst song ever" debate from the other night, I think the only reason "we Built This City" is usually named is because it involved someone as talented as Grace Slick. It's clearly not objectively the worst song ever on its own merits - it's bad, the lyrics are insipid, but it's at least catchy. But we compare it to "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," and it clearly doesn't measure up. But the worst song ever is probably some 54 minute rock opera written by a guy who does the entire thing on theremin and spoken word. The worst song ever is something none of us have heard, and something we could hardly even comprehend. (For the record, I don't even think "We Built This City" is the worst Starship song. I'll take it any day of the week over "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now.") Posted by: Johnny at September 05, 2016 11:58 AM (kumBu) 256

If Hillary becomes president do her caretakers plan on just hiding her
away for 4/8 years like her campaign so far? I doubt she will stand for being locked in the attic and allowed out once every two weeks for a staged appearance. Sooner or later she will escape her handlers and the country will realize there is an evil psychopathic ax-lady in the White House. Most commuted Dems are probably OK with that but the average LIV might be a little disturbed if they ever notice. Posted by: Ripley at September 05, 2016 12:23 PM (1BQGO) 331

So a gay man and his "husband," both of whom were elementary school teachers in Minnesota, were caught seducing teenage school boys and taking them out to their cabin in the woods, and also to a local motel room where they'd have sex with them during Gay Pride Week. During the investigation (after one of the kids came forward), cops found a secret camera in their home bathroom, and also a file folder of kiddie porn on their computer.

The "Gay American" fails to understand the difference not only the difference between positive and negative rights i.e. that our system of government is to protect your inherent rights against official intrusion, but even the difference between "rights" and "feelings." That is, her government is imperfect so long as it lacks full authority to prevent anyone, pubic or private, from hurting your feelings. Nothing like handling being a relay on a message that comes with a White House switchboard number to call to authenticate that "Secretary Cheney has been given the order...USAF C-130s will depart XXX (I think it was Pope) be prepared to receive them at San Juan Int'l Airport at XXX time". Re: Hillary's age and health.
Yes, she is approaching 70 and age does explain some of her apparent frailties and appearance. Having said that my wife is 71 (she was a cradle robber) and she is almost infinitely more healthy, active and vibrant than the would-be president. If she has some type of fall--it's because she's doing stuff that Hillary would never do. She goes to the gym, not for yoga but to take classes with women half her age. (She used to have three times the energy of a woman half her age--now she's down to twice the energy of a woman half her age.) I guarantee I've taken many photographs where she is much more attractive than any of those airbrushed monstrosities of Hillary. And she usually looks genuinely happy. Hillary's ugliness ain't just about the age. Just wanted to say that. Posted by: Northernlurker at September 05, 2016 12:48 PM (s7hQ/) 410

402 So a gay man and his "husband," both of whom were elementary school teachers in Minnesota, were caught seducing teenage school boys and taking them out to their cabin in the woods, and also to a local motel room where they'd have sex with them during Gay Pride Week. During the investigation (after one of the kids came forward), cops found a secret camera in their home bathroom, and also a file folder of kiddie porn on their computer.
The two men went to Washington State over the weekend and killed themselves. http://tinyurl.com/zylhzam Posted by: TrivialPursuer at September 05, 2016 12:46 PM (NnYnv) Calgary held a gay pride parade yesterday. Missed it. Posted by: Northernlurker at September 05, 2016 12:49 PM (s7hQ/) 414
For a current band with that kind of 'arrangement,' Haim consists of three cute sisters and one unrelated dude, the drummer, who definitely isn't allowed to bang any of them. But he's still a rock star, so I doubt he's starving for sex. (He's not in any of their publicity material, though - it ruins the '3 cute sisters' vibe if they include the unrelated male drummer).

For the week after 9/11, Mrs. JTB and I did emergency communications between rescuers and the Red Cross and Salvation Army. Turns out the various rescue agencies couldn't talk to each other; their equipment didn't allow it. And there wasn't space for all the needed materials on site at the Pentagon. A network was set up where hams accompanied the teams on site. When they needed something not immediately available, the hams got to us at the Red Cross or Salvation Army HQ to pass it along and the stuff would be loaded and trucked to the site. Sounds awkward but it worked. I heard the agencies can now talk to each other but I wonder if that's true.
The effort was massive, as you might expect. The materials requested could be anything from dog food for the canine units, ball caps, work gloves, body bags, batteries for flashlights, and many other things. I especially remember a request for a bottle of Mydol for one of the women MPs with cramps. She was well armed and got it quickly. Posted by: JTB at September 05, 2016 12:55 PM (V+03K) 429

I usually hear three main reasons for not getting one: 1) Name and address in a publicly accessible database. b. It's too expensive. III: I've got the radio, but not getting a license, after TSHTF I won't need one. I already addressed "1" earlier (use a PO Box). I hear "b" from people who won't hesitate to drop $2500 on a custom 6.5 Grendel with the best tacticool optics and accessories on the market. "III" really drives me nuts, because it's the functional equivalent of buying that 6.5 Grendel and just shoving in the safe on the assumption that when SHTF you can just pull it out and start shooting like Jerry Miculek. Just like there's a lot more to shooting than pointing and squeezing the trigger, there's a lot more to radio than pressing the button and talking...and like shooting, it's a perishable skill. Posted by: Pepe, founder of the fn-right at September 05, 2016 01:32 PM (zZXDy) It's complicated: Raised a military brat, Morrison's family moved often. He spent part of his childhood in San Diego. He completed third grade at a Fairfax County Elementary School Fairfax County, Virginia. His father was stationed at NAS Kingsville in 1952, he attended Charles H. Flato Elementary School in Kingsville, Texas. He continued at St. John's Methodist School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then Longfellow School Sixth Grade Graduation Program from San Diego, California.[14] In 1957, Morrison attended Alameda High School in Alameda, California.[15] He graduated from George Washington High School, now George Washington Middle School, in Alexandria, Virginia in June 1961.[14] That was from the wiki entry Posted by: OregonMuse at September 05, 2016 01:39 PM (SmHHS) 567

This is what I mean by "old guys on rascals": it's a ham radio point of humor the number of old fat guys that show up to hamfests (think combo trade show and flea market for ham radio) rolling around on mobility scooters, commonly referred to in the community as a "hamabout". The site hamsexy.com likes to make light of it (along with "whackers", which is another topic altogether).

Everybody lived there. Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, I'm running out of memory. But it was different from Haight Ashbury. The Haight was a brief scene that everyone heard about and all sorts of castoffs and runaways showed up and turned it into a homeless shelter. Laurel Canyon was a secluded place where all the cool musicians hung out and jammed with each other. Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 05, 2016 02:02 PM (mgbwf) 600
