Roses are burnt & tiny. We've had 20 90 degree days this year. They're always small in summer but they've never been this burnt.
I need to remove all, fertilize one last time & hope weather doesn't reach 90s again. I'm still trying to get pink/white climbers to climb. Last year I had to chop to below ankle level. 11 y/o white climber in back died over this winter.

These words are completely inadequate to describe such a masterpiece. You really should look up a copy that can be enlarged. The original is 22' x 32'. The viewer could spend days enriching his life by studying it.
Then there is today's black and orange-ish mockery of art more appropriate for the Halloween edition of a bad pulp magazine. (Yeah, I know why it was chosen. Happy Labor Day, BTW.)
The enormous gulf between the talent, vision, and spirit in these two images is frightening.

Mike Hammer, I had a 40 meter dipole that I could tune from 10 down to 80 meters. It worked pretty well considering I can't give it much height. Also looking into a magnetic loop or a Gap Titan vertical. Not cheap but they get good reviews.

I've been on general strike since 2008. I have a disability (nuerolgical problems similar to MS since 2009) and I refuse to take government money.
Fuck them I'll manage with less. And I damn sure refuse to pay taxes to the criminal federal government. I paid more than my fair share after my parents and grandparents died.

I keep harping on this, but the differences between northern (coldweather) cultures and those with warmth all year is startling sometimes. If you didn't can, salt, preserve, and otherwise stock up, you would die over the long winters.

In a baking pan, fill it 3/4 full of thinly chopped apples, dot with about a quarter stick of butter, sprinkle with sugar.
In a separate bowl, mix about a cup or more of oatmeal with a cup or more of flour and a half cup of sugar, cut in a half stick of butter until it resembles crumbs, and spread over the apples in the pan
Bake at 350F for 40 - 45 minutes
If you use brown sugar it will have more caramel overtones, and if you apples are too sweet or bland try putting some lemon juice in on top of the apples before putting on the topping.
That is happiness in a pan.

I have a G5RV dipole strung up like an inverted vee, apex up about 50'. It works OK.
I first got my ham license in 1970, when I was 14 years old. Was active until about 1980, then other things like school and life and marriage, took precedence. Got back into the hobby in 2010. Interesting to see the changes.
First, the no-code license is blasphemy. I'm just sayin'.
Second, the all solid-state rigs with digital tuning are pretty cool. The all solid-state KW amplifiers are also amazing to me.
Third, it's amazing how dead the bands are. Back in the day, getting on 40 meters on a Saturday afternoon, there'd be wall-to-wall QSOs from 7200-7300. Nowadays, there's just acres of empty space. It gives me a sad.

That story is almost the same story my parents told me how they got their 3 cats. In 2001 they had to put down their old Marmelade cat of about 18 yo. A couple weeks later they went to the shelter to get 2 cats. In a cage were 3 siblings. They picked 2. As my dad turned away he felt a tap tap on his back. It was the third kitteh sibling. They went home with 3.
Someday if science can remove the 'kill gene' in big cats and replace it with a 'lap kitteh rub my belly and I'm happy' gene I want to get a Snow Leopard. They are some beautiful cats.

I sometimes listen to the bands on an old Sony 2010 receiver. I was surprised how much CW there was. But I didn't hear as much rag chewing on 75 meters as there used to be. Those were usually older hams who may well be SKs by now.
OTOH, a major disruption of cell phone service might spark new interest in ham radio.

So "Black Lives Matter" is more racist gangster anarchy, created by Soros money and Holder intervention in Ferguson. It is not communism, it is a tool to create instability.
Of course the communism fairy tale is what Democrats preach all the time. The reality is there are always a few at the top that use the propaganda to use government as their enforcer for their graft. They should have died long ago, but they run DC and the media instead. But "socialist grifters" may be a better description.

Apropos of the whole "worst song ever" debate from the other night, I think the only reason "we Built This City" is usually named is because it involved someone as talented as Grace Slick. It's clearly not objectively the worst song ever on its own merits - it's bad, the lyrics are insipid, but it's at least catchy. But we compare it to "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," and it clearly doesn't measure up.
But the worst song ever is probably some 54 minute rock opera written by a guy who does the entire thing on theremin and spoken word. The worst song ever is something none of us have heard, and something we could hardly even comprehend.
(For the record, I don't even think "We Built This City" is the worst Starship song. I'll take it any day of the week over "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now.")

I think there is no doubt that Airplane was awesome and Starship sucked. For this I blame Marty Balin. (I think he had been in Airplane at some point, but he's not really part of the canon).

Love the weekend threads but family schedule usually prohibits more than browsing or quick-hit commenting. Food thread's been useful on a few occasions, I'd like to say I've made use of the gardening thread but then I look out the window and realize how far I have to go. At least I got a start on fixing the front-yard drip stuff yesterday.

I think a prepper thread - not necessarily a bunker-in-the-middle-of-nowhere discussion, but more just a disaster-preparedness thing - would be useful.
Maybe we don't talk about where we keep the $500 in small bills.

A famous cemetery which was trashed by visiting pilgrims to Morrison's grave who not only left memorials by his grave but vandalized and wrote graffiti on neighboring headstones. I recall a French tour guide telling me that cleaning up after Morrison's fan club was a constant pain in the ass for the cemetery custodians.

Worst one I worked with was Hurricane Hugo. For the first few days the only comms in and out of Puerto Rico was ham radio. The fedguv was sending all relief message traffic via the Hurricane Watch Net (hwn.org) until military comms could be airlifted in. Nothing like handling being a relay on a message that comes with a White House switchboard number to call to authenticate that "Secretary Cheney has been given the order...USAF C-130s will depart XXX (I think it was Pope) be prepared to receive them at San Juan Int'l Airport at XXX time".

Yes, she is approaching 70 and age does explain some of her apparent frailties and appearance.
Having said that my wife is 71 (she was a cradle robber) and she is almost infinitely more healthy, active and vibrant than the would-be president.
If she has some type of fall--it's because she's doing stuff that Hillary would never do.
She goes to the gym, not for yoga but to take classes with women half her age. (She used to have three times the energy of a woman half her age--now she's down to twice the energy of a woman half her age.)
I guarantee I've taken many photographs where she is much more attractive than any of those airbrushed monstrosities of Hillary. And she usually looks genuinely happy.
Hillary's ugliness ain't just about the age.

I usually hear three main reasons for not getting one:
1) Name and address in a publicly accessible database.
b. It's too expensive.
III: I've got the radio, but not getting a license, after TSHTF I won't need one.
I already addressed "1" earlier (use a PO Box). I hear "b" from people who won't hesitate to drop $2500 on a custom 6.5 Grendel with the best tacticool optics and accessories on the market. "III" really drives me nuts, because it's the functional equivalent of buying that 6.5 Grendel and just shoving in the safe on the assumption that when SHTF you can just pull it out and start shooting like Jerry Miculek. Just like there's a lot more to shooting than pointing and squeezing the trigger, there's a lot more to radio than pressing the button and talking...and like shooting, it's a perishable skill.
