Rise of the Banana-less Republics
Latin America, both the Spanish speaking countries and Brazil, are stereotypically known for being "banana republics" run by dictators. Indeed, Venezuela and Cuba seem to personify this. However, there is an increasing trend of would-be tyrants and corrupt "El Presidente" types being legally removed from office in a triumph of democracy. Hello all.
So a guy I went to high school with is now a Methodist pastor in Ohio, and has become increasingly left-wing over time. Partly it's because his parents are the same way, partly it's the Social Gospel distortion of Christianity he's signed on for. Anyway, the other day he posted on Facebook about how proud he was that his 10-year-old had just ripped his 7-year-old a new one for "misgendering" a transgender celebrity (didn't say who). Just thought I'd share that, lest anyone thought these SJWs might be going away in the next few years or so. They are a plague and they are reproducing. Whoever said Nirvana's cover of "The Man Who Sold The World" was better than the original...I agree, and I say that as a Bowie fan.
I can't agree (which I guess is the point of these discussions). I found the MTV Unplugged version of Nirvana and I don't think it tops Bowie. Maybe the album version is better. Except in rare instances, the original version of a song is better--especially if it's a good song that you already like. How can that be improved upon?
There are exceptions to this --Hendrix doing "Watchtower"; Santana doing "Black Magic Woman"; Johnny Cash , "Hurt" and Sonic Youth covering "Superstar." In all these cases, the cover version goes places the original didn't and thus the cover artist makes it their own. Bertram: After years of HPs, I thought I would try and Epson. I also wanted to see if using/having *4* ink tanks instead of two would save money or make ink last longer.
Good news: the Epson printing quality, *while it worked,* was very good, just as much so as all my HPs. Pictures came out great too. And I have an LD Products company store close by me, so I was always able to get remanufactured ink tanks for $6.99 each. Bad news, and the dealbreaker: About two months ago, it inexplicably *stopped printing black ink.* I have tried everything, changing ink, using a NON-remanufactured ink tank... nothing works. And when I looked for a fix online, the only one I could find was: Epson printers are built to break, get another make next time. So, sigh, I'm back to HP. andy, yikes! Yeah, turns out Epson parts dry out.
The problem is I *know* it wasn't just the ink tanks, because switching out the black didn't make any difference and I read having the machine cleaned out would cost more than I spent for the dang thing. Screw it, back to HP. At least the new one I'm getting will have *two* paper trays, so I won't have to switch out regular paper and photo paper anymore. And it uses the old 2-cartridge "black/color" system. Posted by: qdpsteve at September 02, 2016 12:01 AM (OKox0) 279

OT, but - anybody seen the film "The Eagle Huntress"? It premiered at Sundance this year, and I just saw the trailer today. Here it is:
http://tinyurl.com/hjh78gn It's a doc about a 13 yo Mongolian girl who becomes the first Eagle Hunter in Mongolia's 2000 yr history. This might be the year's best film. Here's the thing. When Girl Power is about millionaire actresses remaking a thirty yo film that's on cable every other week, that's just dumb. But when Girl Power is a 13 yo Mongolian girl who never heard of Hollywood juggling a golden eagle on horseback better than any men - that's pretty cool. However, Judy Collins does the pop version best. Noel Harrison has the movie version of The Windmills of Your Mind {theme song of the king of cool's original version of The Thomas Crown Affair} vs. Dusty Springfield's version. The Supreme's You Keep Me Hangin' On vs. Vanilla Fudge's. The Byrds doing Dylan vs Dylan doing Dylan.

It's like a form of falconry, and the Mongolian version goes an extra step in that they release the bird back into the wild after hunting with it for a few years, so that it may mate. I wonder if it will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival? I've never been to one but maybe I'll check out the TIFF schedule to see if it'll be included. I would check it out - it looks like an incredible film. The filmmakers used a drone to get some shots, so there are these incredible vista's of steppe and mountains. Almost John Ford-like. And I think there's a "Nanook of the North" aspect to it. I don't the people in the film really knew what the filmmakers were doing - what it really meant to have a film made about them. And the girl - you've got a 100+ lb. eagle flying at you, with talons that could rip your eyes out in an instant, you're on horseback, and it's supposed to land on your hand. And there's a heck of a father-daughter story. And evidently there's footage of the "village elders' discussing whether they should really let a girl eagle hunt. Might have to check me out some laser printer stuff, after all.
It's got to where I take a USB drive to Office Despot, and print on their high speed, high quality machines. Still cheaper than dealing with dried up cartridges and un-renewable print heads. That's where the Epson dies, too. If they'd let'cha click in a new print head for a reasonable price, I'd keep the printer for damn near ever. It does a great job, but I don't use it enough, so it dies. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at September 02, 2016 12:35 AM (v5iqM) 363
Really OT:
I've been working with a freelance client for several years, and they asked me to put in a bid on re-doing all the text of their e-commerce website. It's a huge project that needs to be done in eight weeks. To make a long story short, I have twisted myself in 100 different knots to make the pricing work and have given them several different pricing options. However, they want it fast, cheap and good. They don't seem to understand you can only have two out of three. Today I got an email from their UK office saying that my rate isn't in their budget at all and asked if I could do it for 17% less. Which means several thousand dollars less for me. Basically, I'll do the same amount of work, they'll get the same quality (for their website and product packaging) and I'll get a lot less money. So, tomorrow morning I'm sending them a very polite 'thanks, but no' email. Sigh. I need to just give up, get a job at a bookstore and start collecting money from Uncle Sugar like everyone else in the USA. How is the wall different than Light Rail? I who will never benefit from the light rail in Minneapolis get my money taken to pay for it and I am way across the Hennepin county border. They take my money all the time to build and pay for crap all the time. If the money flow out of the US to Mexico is larger then the money flow in. Yet another reason for Wall Stree and the Big Banks to oppose Trump. If he's serious about seizing cartel money, well, he's gonna step on a lot of toes.
The drug cartels deal in billions and billions. There is no way they could do business without using the banking system. In fact, the big banks are up to their eyeballs in laundering money for the cartels. And Uncle Sam benefits as well. The Cayman Islands banking system is one of the biggest holders of US debt, 3rd or 4th largest foreign holder. All they ever do is just give the banks a slap on the wrist if the drug money handling is so obvious they have to do something. I've read claims that really cracking down on drug money circulation through the banking system would actually cause a little crash -- a little seize up in the system until you adjusted for it. The War on Drugs is nothing but a hypocritical sham. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at September 02, 2016 01:18 AM (DW+jj) 399

Just got through the Zappa Stairway to Heaven cover. Someone said Zappa looked bored. He always looked aloof. I was most fortunate to see him several times. One time I saw him not so aloof was when the Mothers were the homecoming band at my college (seriously - guess where & when) and at one quiet point, some guy in the audience called out, "EAT ME FRANK!" Zappa did a long pause, smiled, and managed to say, "I hope that's a girl with a deep voice!" Oh, he was also delightfully genial introducing guest star "Mister Sting" at a great concert in Chicago. An odd thing I don't understand: composers like Handel and Bach remained creative all their lives, rock stars generally dry up after a few good albums. Is it because they just decide to rest on their laurels and spend the rest of their lives on tour? I'm surprised they don't go nuts playing the same stuff over and over again. . . . .Looks legit. It is a poll of likely voters. One disturbing thing is there is 19% don't know or refused. That's quite a bit this close to the election. 1/5th of likely voters either won't say or don't know who they are voting for is yuuuge at this point. Rasmussen did a survey on the issue of hidden Trump voters this week: "A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 17% of Likely Republican Voters are less likely this year to let others know how they intend to vote compared to previous presidential campaigns." So it does appear that there are a significant number of Trump voters out there that polling is not picking up. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at September 02, 2016 07:01 AM (iONHu) 533

Good morning horde. I stayed away from the no porn thread.
Let me make a big generalization and say that most women stayed away from that thread. I know women watch porn, but hanging around with mostly men discussing it?-just ugggggh. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at September 02, 2016 07:17 AM (6HqlZ) 536
Is the College of Cardinals ever going to get rid of this communist before he destroys the Catholic Church?
Short answer: no. Long answer: no. Because, much like here, where real government power isn't with Senator Blutarsky from North Sodomy, AK, but with the permanent class of unelected bureaucrats who put papers in front of him to sign and make "summaries" of pending legislation so that he doesn't have to go to the trouble of actually reading a bill, the CoC is controlled by the lavender mafia which has been steadily infiltrating the Church for over 50 years and which was instrumental in persuading Benedict to "resign." The decision to depose Frankie Fabulous lies not with the cardinals, but with the shadowy camarilla who control them. I skimmed through the porn thread. It does tend to bring out some interesting commentary. I am surprised, though, that no one seems to have mentioned the rather convenient timing of the article, holding Carlos Danger up as a symbol of everything that's wrong just when Scankles and her beard need to have him disgraced and thrown to the curb.
I guarantee you some Clinton Cash went towards that hit piece. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at September 02, 2016 07:25 AM (X6fMO) 540
Garrison Keillor wrote a "scathing letter" to Donald Trump (the link is over at Instapundit). Its pretentious and smug because, well, Garrison Keillor. If Trump winning causes this fool to get menstrual cramps, its worth it

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at September 02, 2016 07:25 AM (X6fMO) I don't think it has to be that sinister. I mean, the motives are base, Weener is now an untethered liability, so whatever prior impulse there was to offer him protection is gone. Which has nothing to do with "reporting" the "news," but it's hardly something the Clinton clan would have had to impose on anyone in the media. So it does appear that there are a significant number of Trump voters out there that polling is not picking up.
Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at September 02, 2016 07:01 AM (iONHu) Now that the long march throuh the institutions is complete, voters need to internalize just how hostile those institutions are to them. Then they might actually get a clue. Posted by: Yuimetal at September 02, 2016 07:37 AM (mBYZv) 547

FZ also covered Watchtower and Whipping Post. I still prefer the Hendrix and All man versions. Posted by: freaked at September 02, 2016 07:39 AM (BO/km) 549

Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at September 02, 2016 07:01 AM (iONHu) ========================== I posted a link yesterday to a story about the MSM going after Trump supporters and their families, in fine Lenin/Stalin fashion, and holding back nothing. The MSM destroys people for voting the wrong way, and those who somehow skate or withstand the pressure can look forward to a decade of OSHA and IRS audits if Clinton wins. I think the worst of it will be south and east of us....there's a stalled front just to the south that may keep it a county or 2 away....I think Vic is in the bull's eye.
-- I'm in the upstate with Big'n'James. We've just got a very cloudy morning and are supposed to get intermittent rain for a while. I think the cone of doom scooted more to the right of us. On a good note, it's only a high of 71(!) today. After endless high heat this summer, I'm all for it. Posted by: Lady in Black - Death to the Man Bun at September 02, 2016 07:44 AM (+FSld) 552
That damn woodpecker is right outside my office window leering at me. When he's not watching porn he's destroying an old half-dead ash tree out back, and he's loud about it.

I sent a polite but scathing (more scathing than anything Garrison Boring can come up with)email to the Minneapolis PD last Friday regarding their shameful behavior when lawabiding Trump supporters were attacked by BLM thugs.
I'm rather hoping that the loathsome Viqueens will pick up Colin K. Let the cops there root for a guy who wears socks depicting them as pigs. Minnesota and Colin deserve each other. And if he does become a Viking, he'll get his ass booed big time at Lambeau. Posted by: Donna&&&&&V. whitely brandishing ampersands&&&&&so there at September 02, 2016 07:58 AM (P8951) 555
BTW, the Minneapolis PD never replied to my email. But then, what could they possibly say? How can they defend their actions?
