ONT 8/18/16 DIY edition [krakatoa]

So a couple days ago I pimped my brother's books here. The response was amazing, and he is very much appreciated. Thank you very much. Of course, if this is new information to the graveyard shift, check out that post, and see if you can't help his numbers.

One thing I didn't mention on that thread, because, well, I didn't know, was that any reviews on Amazon would be appreciated as well. According to him:

The reviews not only let people know that books were read and liked, but also very much help in the ranking system so when people do a general search, those pop up nearer to top. It's not the only thing that modifies the ranking, but it does have a significant impact.

No need to game the system and add reviews if you didn't read the book or novella. We are all above such things. Well, most of us. But if you read it, he'd appreciate reviews, even bad ones. He's a new author and appreciates constructive input.

On to the regular ONT content, which is less content than point your fingers and laugh at my cheapness and pain.

Not your correspondent. Yet.

I sit here humbled once again in my ongoing travails as a DIY handiman. Home ownership is a hell of a thing, especially in the age of Obama. But it's mine in spirit, if not exactly in tax law, and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay anyone to do something I should be able to do myself.

The past few weeks have been busy. I had to replacing the pool pump. (I know, you weep already for the poverty of chez krakatoa). Built some raised beds. Am in the process of re-vamping the home network.

This week our 20 year old Maytag went south when the washing machine drum stopped spinning. I figure, how expensive can that be to fix? Well, I find to my delight it's just a basic 10 amp 250v glass fuse that has blown on the motor control board. Ok, sez I, I'm getting off real cheap. Then I notice the fuse is soldered in, and I decide to do a little interweb 'slootin.

Well, it turns out you can't just replace the fuse. The fuse blowing is an indicator you've got bigger problems, either on the board (250 bucks), or the motor (200 bucks). The recommended fix is a conversion to a new motor/control board combo for only 300 bucks.

My friend who works in HVAC (yes, the same crappy friend from the free book thread) tells me that in this scenario, technically, yes it's a fuse, but it's actually being used as a resister, and yes, soldering in a new fuse is a waste of time. He also called me a cheap bastard with a flinty heart and smelly feet.

Full disclosure: my feet don't stink that bad if I bathe regularly. Yes, I have a flinty heart, but I blame my friend for it, so I think we can call that a draw.

I am a cheap bastard though. Ask anyone. Yes, I live in a house with an indoor pool, but you wouldn't believe the deal we got on this place. The one repair that came up I didn't attack myself was when my HVAC went down. Leaking coolant somewhere. I'm under warranty, but still had to argue with them over whether a leaky coolant tube counted as "equipment" under their 10 year equipment warranty, and explain to them that I would not be paying for the 4 extra visits it took for them to actually show up with the right equipment and find the leak. You can understand why I am hesitant to bring in third parties for repairs.

So I gambled on a 50 dollar used controller board off Ebay instead of dealing w/ a repair man. I figured I had a 50/50 chance of it working. And for once, I lucked out. Got it in today, plugged it in with minimal effort, and the drum spins.

Then I decide to push my luck since its already partially disassembled, and figure I'll put on the nice door boot we ordered a couple months ago since the current one is pretty dirty.

How hard could that be, right?

Pretty got-damned impossible if you don't have a set of locking pliers, that's how hard.

One finger has a nasty blood blister. On another I bent the nail back on, and while not bleeding, it hurts. And the washing machine sits still disassembled and useless until I buy the right tool for the job.

The right tools, cursing you later regret, at least double the expected time, and real blood, sweat and tears are the hidden expenses involved with DIY.

So in the next couple weeks my brother comes down and we frame out my basement, re-floor the sunroom from the studs up, and maybe even work on a deck extension and a knock-sensor replacement for my 20 year old car. I'm a sucker for punishment. But it still beats the hell out of my day job.

Check my moron math then: 2 fingers down = 2 extra fingers of Scotch.

On second thought, don't check my math. Sweet oblivionousness beckons.

Oh, and re. the caption on the pic up there? A leak has sprung up in my garage roof. So... yeah. It could get that ugly.

We were doing the finish work, and I was up in a hot attic doing something -- I think I was wiring an air handler for the 2nd story.

I tripped over something and stepped off the joist and put my foot through the sheetrock.

18 DIY projects in the name of avoiding repair or build projects outsourcing have netted me some great toys over the years - MIG welder, plasma cutter, various saws, drill press, nail guns, etc. All I needed to learn I found on the Internets. I have an entire Spalding-Gray-styled monologue about changing garbage disposals.

It's like the people making sinks NEVER thought anyone would put a garbage disposal on there; in fact, they'll be angry if you do. It's such a headache that I always think I'm illegally attaching pirate merchandise onto the sink.

Just had to change my porch lights. Same deal.

Every time I DIY, I run into the fact that all this stuff is designed by lunatics and complete fucking idiots.

Horrible moment of thinking the leg was broken and how the heck were they going to get me out and down the stairs. Just a bad bruise at the knee that hurt like the devil and lasted for months. So, be careful up there Krak!

49 My washing machine and dryer were both built in 1958. Installed in the basement by the previous owner. I "inherited" them whne I moved in a couple decades ago.

To this day, the work perfectly. Zero problems.

(Well, that's not entirely true: the dryer has a couple of weird quirks about the timer settings, but as loing as you know to just turn it "On" and futz around remembering which timing setting works, you're fine.)

I think these were made just before the final triumph of planned obsolescence.

Electricity used to scare me. Then I realized it is just plumbing with electrons (assuming there are no 3 way switches). Electrons come in and need to be drained. Switches are just valves. Not probably a perfect system but gets me through most projects.

58 I am in the travails of home repair as well.

Re-flooring the entire house in vinyl plank. On the second floor this involves removing carpet, which, no big deal, but I'm a) a moron and b) an engineer, so I'm adding a reinforcing layer of sanded 1/4 plywood above the existing sheathing, offset from the existing joints, and glued and nailed. It's an awesome way to end squeaks and make the floor much, much stronger.

On the ground floor I'm busting tile off the slab and grinding it smooth. By hand.

Completely repainting the interior of the house.

Probably messing with the entire kitchen.

Looking at replacing all our windows, which are terrible single pane jobs from the 80's. And not with replacement windows, because they don't actually flash with the exterior waterproofing system, and I'm a flashing/counter-flashing kind of guy. Take that however you want.

And so to install windows the right way, I have to take off the siding. And the siding is crap anyway, and there's no housewrap so--I'm wrapping the house in Tyvek's new reflective house wrap that creates a radiant barrier.

It only creates a radiant barrier if you have a 3/4" air cavity, and I like the idea of rain screen systems anyway, so I'm cooking up my own rain screen system using hardiboard.

Finally, and this is the best part, the only stair in my home is a spiral stair, which is fine and the kids love it, but you cannot carry anything large up the stairs, and it's going to hurt resale. Also why we got the house cheap.

So I'm bumping out the back wall (the spiral stair is there because the guy before me added the second floor and did not plan correctly for his stair) and adding a proper two-run stair. But. Because I am both a moron and an engineer, I'm making the area under the intermediate landing a storm shelter, with CMU walls and a concrete lid. And some sort of steel frame door, which is my excuse for buying a welder.

Amazingly, my wife is more or less on board with all this. I just have to finish before my daughter graduates and therefore we have out of town guests and a graduation party in May of next year.

62 Dumbest DIY thing I ever foolishly tried was finding a hand-held belt sander in some trash pile somewhere, and taking it home and plugging it in to see if it worked.

Damn thing blew out the fuses all over the house and fried a whole length of wiring inside the wall, necessitating an expensive repair.

After that, I had those newfangled "built-in circuit-breaker" type wall outlets.

Indeed! And if the washer Krak is fixing is a front loader, and it sounds like it is, the best thing to do with it is take out into the woods, load it full of Tannerite, and shoot at it with a 30-06 until it goes Bang!. Then buy a decent top loader. I made the mistake, once, of buying a front-loader, and it gave me nothing but grief. Top-loaders are much more fault-tolerant.

Garbage disposals are a pain in the ass because you're flopping around on the floor with your head and hands in an undersink cabinet, not because they're difficult as such. If you could work on one seated comfortably in a chair with plenty of space all around, they'd be a walk in the park.
And part of my particular problem is that I remember the moment I screwed myself in a conversation with the cabinetmaker. Our north-side kitchen countertops are actually 3-1/2" deeper front-to-back than standard. This has numerous benefits and was an outstanding idea I found in a remodeling book. This was accomplished essentially by throwing a 2x4 behind the cabinets and making the exposed side panel larger.

The cabinets are (left to right) little drawers, undersink, dishwasher, pot/pan drawers. Because they're just moved away from the wall, we didn't have to go with custom drawer sizes for all the drawers -- good idea. Because the dishwasher sits on the floor and goes to the countertop, it's space is full depth -- good idea. Because the undermount sink has extra countertop to sit in, all the controls don't bump the backsplash and there's plenty of counter in front of the sink -- good idea....

But because the undersink cabinet doesn't go all the way back to the wall, all that space for dispensers and faucets and airgaps and the like.....are in a tiny crevice behind the sink and garbage disposal. Bad idea.

70 I learned how to do car repairs on my first automobile, a 1970 Plymouth Valiant. It was already 15 years old when I bought it. It was easy to see where everything was and how to get to it; you could even see some of the driveway underneath when you opened the hood.

74 The other DIY thing I can personally recommend is an automotive Data Reader. The thing you plug in to the analytical port under your dash, down by your legs.
90% of the time whenever your engine light comes on, it is a minor issue, like a cylinder mis firing one time. But the engine light stays on, so get one that has the ability to turn off the light on the dash.
They are pretty cheap.

We have a dishwasher like that-put in in 1980, when the previous owner remodeled the 1957 kitchen, and it's still working well today. Thirty six years is a pretty good run for an appliance. (It's a Kitchenaide, which had pretty much convinced me that that's the longest lived appliance out there. Our previous house had a 1980's Kitchenaide refrigerator that is still going. Hardy gear.)

And if the washer Krak is fixing is a front loader, and it sounds like it is, the best thing to do with it is take out into the woods, load it full of Tannerite, and shoot at it with a 30-06 until it goes Bang!. Hint: Save little 1-foot cutoffs of lumber from projects. When you have to reinstall a garbage disposal, build a little Jenga under it with your wood scraps -- if you're not trying to hold the goddamned thing up with one hand while you engage the locking ring, it's a lot less stressful.

Speaking of which, a guy I know recently spent a night in jail because his wife locked herself with his keys and their 5 year old in the bedroom because she did not agree with plans. He wanted to leave and take the child to go swimming. He got through and when he returned home from a day with the extended family, cops were there to arrest him and spent the night in jail. Because she told them he forced his way in.

So now he is out his house he paid for. Has a TPO and the wife is playing the victim claiming she did not want to press charges to make him feel guilty.

He did not do shit and even if found innocent that will follow him around forever. Fucking Bullshit!

It's too bad I can't link pictures. I've got a little cage around my air conditioning compressor to keep it from getting bumped while we move carts around the garden.....you can also stand on it. I've got a little rack to keep our plastic pots on for plants we intend to give away. You could also stack sacks of concrete on it. I've got a tool rack for rakes, shovels, hoes, etc. -- it could probably support a ton. I decked our attic so we could use it for storage.....with 3/4 plywood. I tend to use 4x4s where others might put 1x2s....

If something is sufficiently massive, it doesn't have to be built particularly well.

The results of the biopsy will be in on Monday. I'm frightened. I'm hoping that the results will be OK and that they can tube feed him until he puts on more weight and is healthy again. But - 6'0" men don't get down to 92 lbs because nothing is wrong with them.

He's wearing boys clothes - men's sizes don't fit on him anymore.

He says more and more the number one prescription for a malfunctioning appliance is to replace the main board.....which as krak" said are hundreds of dollars apiece. If replacing the main board doesn't fix the problem, you can't then return them once they've been removed from the sealed packaging.

Well, since each maker, depending on year and model, could have their own entirely different board design you never know what you're walking into and as an independent he can't possibly afford to buy and inventory a large variety which may not ever get used.

Finally I switch the two, and realize that the problem is that the fittings for the hot and cold sides are not the same size.

More Anglo-Saxon while I go to the store to make the fittings the same size, after which no problem.

Ha-ha!!! Yes, I've seen that -- it may have been a "thing" for about two weeks in 1955, 'cause we've got it in our house, too.
And, BTW, if one gets a dead-blow hammer from Harbor Freight (NTTAWWT), it will eventually fail and dump all its lead shot on the floor -- probably at an extremely inconvenient time. Just be aware, and never use it in a position where this will be a huge problem.

Wheee! I lived in Indonesia for a few years. I bought about 15 of every fitting I needed, because it was always a game of luck getting a decent fit even when the fittings were theoretically the same size.

My favorite so far is the house I bought which had been owned by an electrical engineer, who thought, I gather, that he had special powers over electricity.

He had a heater mat rigged up under the entry carpet which pulled power from the furnace, such that every time the furnace came on, the heater mat got juice. The wire snaked into the return vent where I kid you not he had literally used a campbell's soup can as a junction box.

Which is better than the taped-together wires spliced in the attic, laying in the blown-in insulation.

The crown jewel was the rheostat he added to a ceiling fan to control the fan speed. You need another switch leg for that, but he didn't want to pull wire. So he used the ground wire for a switch leg. I found this out by grabbing it, of course, because why would the ground wire be hot?

Our appliance repair guy (motto: "For when you really have no clue how to even begin") recommends buy them instead of the brand new factory version. There are outfits that rebuild/rehab blown boards, and their re-dos are pretty reliable. Another plus is that if your appliance is more than 10 years old, they probably don't even make that controller board anymore.

228 We have a couple 1950s propane fridges up at my family's cabin that are still running strong. I'm sure it helps that they only get used 6 months a year. But buying new is very expensive so the main one has a rubber truck hood latch that replaced the broken original.

While I'm tracing an electrical problem at Chez Merde I take a panel cover off. A bare copper wire is staring me in the face. I assume it's a leftover and not connected, but years in research had taught me to check and not assume anything, so I slap a voltmeter on it. Turns out, it's hot.

It was only an inch from the cover plate. What could go wrong?

'Cause I'd had to tear 'em out, to get to the termite-riddled wood beneath.

Successfully killed the bugs a few weeks ago, but am going around looking for, and finding damage of their former presence. And undertaking repairs thereto.

So, I've used pressure treated lumber instead of ordinary, cheap pine studs, which requires that I rip about 1/64th or so from one narrow side of the stud, so it'll be the same dimension as the damaged and destroyed original studs. This'll let the new sheetrock lay flat and true.

Taping and floating non-tapered joints in sheetrock, in such a manner as to be unnoticed and undetectable seams under the texture and paint, is a boring, monotonous, repetitive and ultimately filthy, dusty and annoying pain the ass, too.

I've got every stick of furniture from the master bedroom divided between the other two bedrooms, and am sleeping on the sofa while I get this done.

Fortunately, I'm a temporary bachelor while doing all this, as herself is overseas, tending to her ailing mom in Belfast.

Now all I've gotta do is get it done before her return.

But, I can do the work. And thankful of it, otherwise this would be somewhere between a $5k and $10k repair bill. But, I'll have it done for less than $200 in materials, not counting two gallons of a paint, as of yet undecided tone.

But, all in all. I truly look forward to when the day comes that I can return to life aboard a sailboat. In my experience, they're less work to maintain than a house, and in that, I'm truly not kidding, not even a little.

236 So - today I had to pick up a print job that was sent to an outside company - a small business located on a busy street with lots of small businesses and restaurants. Stupidly, I left the Post-It with the exact address on it on my desk, but I'm kinda familiar with the neighborhood so I figured I'd just drive slow and I'd see it. I went up and down a 6 block area twice, looking hard, before I saw it. I knew I must have been pissing off the people behind me because I was driving slow - but what else can you do when you are looking for a business? You have to drive slow. I finally spotted a little dinky sign - the printing place is in the basement of what used to be a church and is now a hair salon/spa.

I parked my car 2 blocks away, picked up my order and when I got back to my car, there was a cop car idling behind it and he walked up to me and told me someone had reported me for driving "erratically." I said, "I wasn't driving erratically, I was driving slowly because I was trying to find a business." He took my license and I sat in my car for 15 minutes while he did a back ground check. (My last speeding ticket was 25 years ago.)

He gave it back to me, finally and thank God, didn't ticket me. I don't blame the cop - he has to check out these things. It's annoying that some asshat behind me was so pissed off he called the friggin' cops on me. sheesh, I can be irritated when I'm stuck behind someone who is going too slow, but I don't think, "I'm gonna report this person!!"

Turns out a simple phillips screwdriver will do the trick. Slip it through the ring and rest the tip on the other end hook, lever it up and the ring will slip right on easy-peasy.

Cooth, I set up the fence on the table saw, and was able to make repetitive cuts on about fifteen full and partial studs, in less time than it would've taken to even get the planer off of it's rack on the wall, set up it's stand, adjust for that on-edge feed of the studs, and then need a 2nd person to catch the full length studs as I pushed 'em through the machine.

Conversely, big ol' cast iron Craftsman 10" saw with carbide finish blade, set the fence just exactly right, and I could feed the wood through about 4x as fast as the planer could handle, and the saw didn't budge a bit. Plus, the much larger table made handling and managing the wood far easier, withal.

Now, if I had been surfacing the "flats" of the studs, the planer would've been the better tool for the job. But, I was ripping off a whisper of wood from the narrow dimension of the 2"x4", pretty much as fast as I could run 'em through the blade.

This time anyway, table saw for the win.

I've been through two new high efficiency top loader washers in the last four years. Each lasted about two years before blowing the main control board. The self diagnostics were worse than useless; they were misleading and lead me to replace good components. The first was a Samsung, the second a Maytag Centennial.

After the second one failed I bought a used 10 year old Maytag with no electronics.

I'm sure you can. Certainly for RV's. Basically, there is nothing that can go wrong with the absorption cooling unit; it's a sealed pressure vessel, and as long as it's kept upright, and heat applied to the chimney, it will cool. I have heard that balky fridges of the Servel type can be "fixed" by turning them upside down for a while, and then setting them back upright, and leaving them sit for 24 hours before attempting to restart. I have no idea if it works.

Actually, it's rather startling to find out how few actual manufacturers we have left -- AC units by York, Coleman, Luxaire, and Guardian are actually made by a company called "Johnson Controls". Cooth, I set up the fence on the table saw, and was able to make
repetitive cuts on about fifteen full and partial studs, in less time
than it would've taken to even get the planer off of it's rack on the
wall, set up it's stand, adjust for that on-edge feed of the studs, and
then need a 2nd person to catch the full length studs as I pushed 'em
through the machine.

Conversely, big ol' cast iron Craftsman 10" saw with carbide finish
blade, set the fence just exactly right, and I could feed the wood
through about 4x as fast as the planer could handle, and the saw didn't
budge a bit. Plus, the much larger table made handling and managing the
wood far easier, withal.

Now, if I had been surfacing the "flats" of the studs, the planer
would've been the better tool for the job. But, I was ripping off a
whisper of wood from the narrow dimension of the 2"x4", pretty much as
fast as I could run 'em through the blade.

This time anyway, table saw for the win.

By contrast, my Craftsman 10" "table saw" is a wee little benchtop thing with some optional wobbly legs. It sits on a Black+Decker workbench most of the time, but has it's own little wobbly-legged stand (and bag for catching sawdust) for when it's "fully deployed".

New topic. Since people were talking about the Netflix show Stranger Things, I watched a coupla episodes. Then I read the plot on wiki and watched the final episode. It didn't much thrill me. Supposedly a second season is on the way, but I think I'll pass. I can see what the writers are trying to do, but it's a few steps short of brilliantly different for my tastes.

A good compromise, is a Bosch, Rigid, or DeWalt, folding, portable 10" Contractor's Table Saw.

I've used the DeWalt, and it's for all intents and purposes, as steady as the cast-iron Craftsman, and it's ..... portable! Plus, you can fold the legs, and stow the saw on the wall at about 1/3 of the Craftsman's footprint.

Highly recommended, actually.

Yes, fine lead shot. Maybe #7, at a guess. The hammer head is a steel tube, to which a smaller, flattened tube was brazed, to act as a socket for the handle. Caps were brazed to the end of the head, which had studs on them to accept standard soft-face hammer faces.

At the moment, I am possibly OVER-provisioned for table saws -- as mine currently collects more dust than sawdust. One thing about table saws, however -- they're right up there with lathes and mills for danger. I had a gf whose grandmother's boyfriend, 70 years old, lost part of two fingers to a table saw. After 20+ years together, he thought it was tame and they understood each other -- instead, it pounced on the opportunity.

Yeah, the "outside" plumbing of absorption cooling units is huge compared to the heat exchanger in the "cold" side. And all made of welded steel tube, because there are fairly high internal pressures. IIRC, they contain hydrogen, helium, and ammonia, and the thermodynamic cycle depends upon the differential solubility of the former two in ammonia at high temperature, and low temperature.

So I leave 15 min early for work so I can hit the locker (and the liquor store because I was light on Val-u-rite) and still make it to work if there's some funkyness. Open up my mail as I walk up. Put Phone infront of scanner. Wait a few. It's not opening shit. Kind of move the phone around a little. BEEP! Your locker is to your left and is open. Enjoy your Delivery! Sure as shit a locker just to my left has popped open and there's my new pair of channel locks (In an envelope of course). So I snag them, put them in my back pocket and head on to pick up the Val-u-Rite.

FUCKING AMAZING! WE LIVE IN THE FUTURE! I DON'T HAVE TO INTERACT WITH OTHER PEOPLE TO BUY SHIT FROM AMAZON! SQUEEEEE!

Exactly so. There are some jobs though, that only a well set-up table saw can do. Same with a lathe.

But, I know that they're never a "friend", or tame in any way. I don't depend on guards or other devices, as the worst injuries I've seen are with folks made complacent by trust in such.

Instead, I keep fingers and arms well clear of the damn blade, use a push stick or other feed-assist tools, and just "stay afraid" of the thing, regardless of my nominal confidence level.

Power tools in general, are all conspiring to kill ya.

Just like on a motorcycle. Ride like you're invisible, that no one can see you. And anyone who *can* see you, is thus trying to kill you.

In short. Complacency kills. Sometimes, even when ya've done everything just right, too.

They make a pencil-thin arc, which runs a temp of 7000F. But it's so small, there's very little total heat input to the melt.

That 7000F arc just vaporizes the tinniest little sliver of a kerf.

And the solid state inverter control system allows for high frequency and waveform control to keep the arc going. Without that, that tiny little arc couldn't be easily maintained.

There are several brands available here in Canada, and have been for years. Typically a blend of 80% propane, and 20% isobutane, plus leak-disclosure dye, or sealant, or compressor lube. It works just fine. I have it in the A/C of my '88 Suburban right now, and it blows cold. Your typical auto A/C contains perhaps 1 to 2 pounds weight of refrigerant. The hydrocarbon blend is combustible, so a slight hazard exists. The fuel tank of your vehicle can contain from 80 to 300 pounds of gasoline, so a slight hazard exists...

A neighbor of mine who had a massive stroke was a TIG magician. Another neighbor actually had a big, ancient TIG machine, but couldn't use it. He could only use for it stick.

Anyway that neigbor who could do it would use the other's machine to do some Heli-arcing for all of us around.

With aluminum, he could make some of the most beautiful beads you ever saw. Perfectly symmetrical little "circles", even lapping. It was just beautiful.

Now, poor guy couldn't weld anything.

To this day, the work perfectly. Zero problems.

(Well, that's not entirely true: the dryer has a couple of weird quirks about the timer settings, but as loing as you know to just turn it "On" and futz around remembering which timing setting works, you're fine.)

I think these were made just before the final triumph of planned obsolescence.

It's one of the things that I've tried to pass along to the godkids. There are different levels of danger. Respect every power tool, but know that a scrollsaw has a few possibilities for danger.....a properly set-up bandsaw, some more; a skillsaw, quite a few more....joiners/planers are just outright dangerous -- and mills, lathes, and table saws should have a plan going-in, a plan coming-out, contingency plans, mitigation plans -- and plotted-out, resourced, and practiced emergency plans. I had to slap the emergency stop on my mini-mill just today (the workpiece pulled off the table into the tool, jamming the tool) -- I could have just stared at it, but I knew what needed to happen.

It's just carelessness somehow, and they just can't see to learn to watch out.

One of these guys actually nearly cut off his hand with a chain saw. You know how he did that? And I'm not joking. The "blade" was dull, requiring great pressure. So he just put his hand on top of the running bar to push down harder. I'm not making that up. He actually did that.

The other fellow I'm thinking about was missing the ends of more fingers than not. He was a farmer, and most of those cut-off finger ends came from greasing a combine. Well, oiling the chains, which requires to be running. He just was too careless around all the moving parts, all the chains and belts and all that.

The first guy's trouble, was he always tried to go fast. When he was working, he'd try to go wide open. I remember my father warning about him. Stay away from him when he gets to working, he's too damn dangerous.

Saint Petersburg, Russia, a couple of years ago -- visiting the "Cossacks' Cathedral": chickens and cats in the yard, and a guy refurbing the back-end of a pickup truck into a trailer. The actual building is in semi-ruins and unsafe to enter. Out in back, there is a monument to the last Czar.

Honestly, it was one of the best parts of our visit.

415 Speaking of DIY, I am about finished my wiring job on the '73 Super Beetle. All exterior lamps are functional now, as are all the dash lamps and indicators. I found a DPDT relay, and wired it such that the oil pressure switch on the engine gives a ground to the relay coil when the engine is not running. One set of contacts on this relay feeds the oil pressure warning lamp in the cluster, so it acts as it did before, to warn of oil pressure failure. The other set of contacts in the relay supplies 12 volts to the yet-to-be-installed electric fuel pump, so that the fuel pump will not run if the engine has no oil pressure. Such a provision is standard on modern cars with electric pumps as a safety measure, so the pump will stop pumping gasoline if the car is in a wreck. As a fillip, I took the "Fasten Seat Belt" warning lamp, which had long been non-working due to lack of seat switches, and simply connected it parallel with the oil pressure warning lamp. So it will illuminate when the key is turned on, and go out once the engine starts. Not that it is needed, mind you, since I use my seat belts out of habit, but it's there in the dash, and making it work pleases me.

I've known more than a couple who were hard on equipment. And the line about greasy tools.

That was a source of friction between dear old Dad and I. He thinks that worrying about keeping things clean while working is just superfluous. And I cannot stand to have a greasy tool in my hand.

Now, grease guns. I actually bought my own grease gun and hid it from him, because he would get grease all over it, and himself. I couldn't stand to pick it up.

And he'd get pissed at me when he'd see me get a rag and clean off a tool he had just used.

He's not accident prone, he just doesn't care about grease and dirt and thinks it's silly and dandified to do so.

419 AOP- I once recounted here cursing a generator that would not start. Checking every thing twice, pulled plug to check ignition, and only got one very weak spark, but was not surprised by that, as it was a recoil starter and difficult to observe the gap while yanking on the starter.

Somewhere in there a little bulb went off in my head reminding me that I *might* have drained the oil after last use, and not refilled on account of being unsure of whether it would be winter temps or summer temps when used again.

Checked the sump, yep. Empty. That's when I checked the manual, and sure enough, it had a low oil shut-down.

So, all of the time I am cursing the SOB, it is busy saving me from myself.

425 DIY story from today, before I go to bed.

I just put a small fridge in my boat. I put it in the space under the stove. There was storage there, but I took off the doors, ripped out the 1 shelf, and used a zip saw to widen the hole by about an inch on two sides. Made a little platform for it to sit on and slid it right in. There's still some gaps around it, so I figured I'd just frame it out.

Went to home depot to buy some simple trim to make the frame. I figured out that I'd need 7 feet. Found some that would work, took it to the register, it rings up at $2.40/ft. "Uh, it's supposed to be $.97/ft". The cashier pages someone from lumber, and I say I'll meet him back there. Go back, see that the piece I had had been in the wrong slot, and the $.97 one was too narrow. Look around, find some other trim that's $1.40. About that time, the lumber guy arrives carrying the 1st piece of trim from the front. "My mistake" I tell him and grab the new trim.

Back to the cashier. She rings me up for 11 ft. Huh? Damn, I hadn't even looked, and I mean, come on, it's freaking OBVIOUS that it's 11 ft.

Back I troop to the lumber section, measure 7 ft, cut it on the little workbench they have for just that purpose, and back to the front.

Now the cashier is laughing (kindly) at me, and for some reason she discounts it to the .$97 price. I thank her, grin, and leave.

Go home, pull out the compound miter saw, and start measuring and cutting. Cut 1. good. Cut 2. great. Cut 3. perfect. Cut 4....hey, y'know, if I just flip the board I don't have to reset the saw between cuts. Cool!

This works fine for square wood, but notso hotso with beveled trim, which I have. And now I don't have enough to make 4 sides, and I wouldn't have a square, I'd have a ziz zag.

*sigh*

Back to HD, go back and grab what I need, get back up front and it's the same cashier. I shake the wood at her. "Know what this is?" "no" "It's the same 4' of wood that I swore I wouldn't need earlier, so I went back and cut it off!"

Perhaps they are simply terrified of the future. The world is a scary place and is changing rapidly. Children born now might end up in a world ruled by Islam. Or a world with one government. Or a world where they will lead a third world existence in America.

If these women don't feel good about their own future, how can they in good conscience bring another life into the world?

I go months without checking the mailbox and only to empty it. If it's important I figure a officer of the law will deliver it or a person will send it certified.

The one's I know don't have time for children--too busy with building a business, yoga, trips around the world. What they don't realize is that their parents did all that and still had kids. By the time they see that they should have had a family, it is far too late. Feminists lied to them when they said they could have it all, so now they choose the thinnest, weakest part and leave the real good stuff alone.

457 So painting one wall a different color is a thing now? The way I was raised, the ceiling is always white and all of the walls are the same color, whatever that is.

Been doing accent walls since I owned in stead of rented, but in this case...

The south wall of the kitchen has the open arch that leads into the addition, with the family room inline.

The East and south walls of the family room will be painted white ... some day. They are presently picture window on steroid walls & we hope to reduce the windows as the summer heat is miserable.

The west wall of the kitchen opens into an interior hallway and we are painting that white next week. It is now a "sand" or off-white & it always looks dirty & dingy.

So the white just telescopes into the next part of the house on those 2 sides...

In the blue room, 3 walls have some sort of break for a door or window. They are 2 tone gray. The 4th wall - ha - is one of the narrow walls & it is a deep blue. The ceiling is white.

In the old master bedroom the south and west walls were beige & the north & east walls were off white, but the north wall had a little cubby-hole that we had the dresser / mirror set back in. It was magenta wash (i.e. not a solid color - different amounts of magenta paint & water sponged on fairly randomly). Saw the color combo in a magazine & thought they went well together...

Magenta is a strong color, but you only see a little "peeking" out behind the dresser / mirror. If there were any more, I'd have to wear sunglasses indoors.

The only way into the bedroom (unless you break a window) is through the family room, so the west & north wall of the family room will be the same green as the master bedroom. Again, sort of a telescoping effect. As you look in that direction, you see different walls with the same color...

470 Sadly the tale of modern home appliances. When I was growing up, and even to some extent when I first got out of the navy and was out on my own home appliances like washers, dryers, and refers were like tanks. They were big, ugly, heavy, mechanical monsters that were reliable as hell. Didn't have many bells and whistles but what it did have worked.

Now they are all unreliable shit. And DIY? Hell no, even if you could find the parts locally servicing them is damn near impossible. When my original Kenmore washer went bad after about 15 years wifey wanted to replace both the washer and dryer. The next two failed after 5 years. Research through Internet sources told me that there are no "good" ones anymore unless you get a super expensive one actually made in Japan.

So I no longer even try for quality. I get the cheapest thing I can find and have adapted the "throw-away" mode which the eco-nazis so deplore. And now my refrigerator is slowly collapsing one piece at a time and based on what happened to my older brother, there isn't any of them worth a crap anymore unless you buy a super expensive commercial grade appliance.

My part of the struggle was to learn to live with and walk around the disassembled washing machine in the middle of the den on my way to the laundromat. So what was the friendliest city? Charleston, SC. On a side note here I have figured out what is making Fox's web site virtually unusable now and it is not auto-play videos which I have blocked. It is their articles in "features and faces" which somehow have been rigged to cycle in and out automatically and each time one of them changes it resets the page which then reloads.
