Emergency ONT - Niedermeyer's Dead Horse

I have no idea if an ONT is on the way, but here's a fresh thread to tide you over.

I watched an ABC 'In An Instant' episode tonight about the Aggie bonfire collapse in 1999. I had forgotten about it but boy, oh boy, were there some heart-wrenching stories told.

In case you've forgotten about it, you can read the story here, from April 2000.

When it was over, 12 young lives had been lost and 27 people had been injured. At a school for engineering, a flawed design was employed, over and over, despite warnings.

It's all so senseless.

BTW, I've never been a fan of ABC's '20/20' program but this new 'In An Instant' series is one of the best shows on tv. It's endlessly gripping and fascinating, and not in that sense that you feel you're being deliberately manipulated. They basically just let those who were part of the story tell the tale.

You should check it out some night.

So, that's it. Here's hoping for better content before the night is through.

Have a great night.

Posted by: All Hail Eris, Literate Savage at July 24, 2016 12:06 AM (jR7Wy)

This one:

The longest tournament chess game (in terms of moves) ever to be played was Nikolic-Arsovic, Belgrade 1989, which lasted for 269 moves and took 20 hours and 15 minutes to complete a drawn game. At the time this game was played, FIDE had modified the fifty-move rule to allow 100 moves to be played without a piece being captured in a rook and bishop versus rook endgame, the situation in Nikolic versus Arsovic. FIDE has since rescinded that modification to the rule.

Yow. Keep in mind, this is from the modern era. There may be games from before timed games that were longer.

Truth be told, I built it when their predecessor, Harley was still alive. And he was a 12 year old mature cat when we moved into the house.

He'd lived the previous seven years aboard boat with me, but before that in San Antonio, he had a similar custom cat box room, enclosed within a cabinet out in the garage, which opened into the laundry room in the house.

So, when we got Bonnie n' Scamp, the cat bathroom was already here awaiting them.

It works, the box get scooped once or twice a day, and there's never an odor.

Works for the human occupants, too. No box to trip over anywhere, or be unsightly out in the open.

I'm happy enough with it.

I have a theory on that:

It's because the SJW assholes and progressive crybullies have fucked everything up so badly that people (and Hollywood) are getting tired of having to put up with their bullshit - so it's a lot easier to set a movie in the past so you don't have to kowtow to every special little snowflake and pet cause.

This theory is totally true because I made it up just now.

This theory is totally true because I made it up just now.

which all other logs were dependent for their support. That center pole
snapped like a toothpick in three places.

They still do it-unofficially, as the insurance cost is what made AM pull the plug after the '99 tragedy. It seems they've learned a lot from what happened. I actually approve. We've come to fetishize absolute safety, which makes human progress impossible. Every time you step on an airliner for am easy, safe, cost to cost flight, you're flying on the bodies of thousands who died in the 40s,50s and 60s to make it possible. There's real value in AM's "other education" concept, and Bonfire is a part of that. ESPN did a story on the now Bonfire a couple of years ago:

Got the ship designs mixed up. The RMQ B-70 Enterprise was for the proposed Star Trek: Planet of Titans movie, not the Star Trek: We're Running out of Colons TV series:

I remember seeing that a loooong time ago. To it's credit, it does have a sleeker look than the bloated Enterprise from Next Generation.

160 Actually a fusion of the McQuarrie and Ken Adam concepts of an Enterprise with a flat delta body did make it into the Next Gen series in "The Best of Both Worlds Pt II" as one of the damaged ships left at Wolf 359.

The only ones that would EVER show the contrast of what Reid said about the Koch brothers than and what he says now would be the media. And the media will do NOTHING to harm their Queen in waiting.

They will pretend that Reid etc. always liked the Koch's, and that the Kochs always loved Hillary.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

Might be too far to presume that the MSM is going to ask them in direct terms. Particularly without a carefully pre- negotiated 'talking points' memo.

The movie has... issues. The setting and tone at times feel like horror, quite a bit for a Disney movie. However, they also mix in at various points the wacky droids, which usually kind of derailed the tenor that they had set up to that point. Mix in a sound track that does very well for the dark parts, but feels strained during the action sequences (kind of a rip off of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica.)

Plus, the ending just kind of goes weird. What exactly did Maximilian and Reinhardt do at the end there?

175 In space there is no need for the sleekness seen with Discovery 1, but grid work ship designs means lots and lots and lots of hidden nooks where a micro-meteorite or even debris from the ship itself could nick something and be impossible to find.

188 Alf767, I'd say "yes" to your query about interest here at the HQ for WWII letters from your relative.

Our resident punster and one of the HQ medical staff Muldoon serialized his father's war diary from action in Italy with the field artillery. He usually put a segment each day in the early morning thread.

So - please consider, as you read through the letters, posting excerpts and factual context (if you have it, or can find it - and that may be a wonderful black hole of research pulling you in ....).

Just one moron's view.

198 Current (an foreseeable future) Comic book movies are guided by the successful formula thats been demonstrated over the last decade plus. Raimi Spiderman, Nolan Batman, Iron Man, X-Men, Deadpool, The Avengers etc.....(Hope Suicide Squad joins the list)

Origin....Crisis...(more Crisis, sometimes)....Redemption/Perseverance. Intro/tie in the next batch of Heroes etc...reboot whenever. Tell same story over again cause people will pay to see it.

They all follow the same formula. Done correctly, its a proven money maker.

But of course, the formula ain't nothin new.

200 "he retold his WWII story as a B-29 pilot recruit but the war ended before he could complete training."

It's amazing that any of the B-29 crew pipeline ever finished training.

Per the recollections of a pilot who entered the B-17 sequence as a recruit, then got yanked and put into the B-29 training, at a time when the manuals were still being written as the plane was built, the B-29 was a whole different ball game.

Far more complex. So much stuff to remember, and so much that could go wrong.

A good friend's father just completed training and was on his first deployment - as a pilot of an SB-2C dive-bomber on a fleet carrier - bound from Pearl to Ulithi when the emperor's recorded message over Japanese radio ended the festivities.

His scrapbook - with excellent photos, including the "classified" one showing him ditching his F-8 Bearcat a few years after the war - had the words "just too late" penned under the last photo of his SB-2C on the carrier deck.

So - consider that as well.

Heh. Bound by 18th-Century thinking, Drake is. I wouldn't expect interstellar ships to have "guns" as such at all. Reaction and all that, you know. Particle-beam weapons, maybe. Missiles, most likely. Weapons, in any case, so powerful, that a direct hit equals a kill. And if the opponents' vessel has adequate shields, if one gun cannot pierce them, neither can a whole battery. Better to have a diversity of weapon types, so if one type fails to get the job done, another may. Backups, of course. But a whole battery of guns, firing a broadside? Nope.

225 Drake was envisioning manually directed and fired plasma cannon along the lines of the English/Spanish technology split during the period just prior to and during the Spanish Armada.
It makes for a rousing tale, but it makes certain assumptions about technology and human ability.

Posted by: Kindltot at July 24, 2016 02:09 AM (ry34m)

226 It depends upon which era of Piper you might be talking about in his TFH. Now Damnthing and other ships in Space Pirates had missiles and guns. Plus the odd Hell Burner if you were really cheesed at someone.

Then there is Saberhagen's Beserker planetoids that had missiles, beam weapons, and all other kinds of 'fun' to deal with Bad Life.

A spherical planetoid allows for almost no blind spots left uncovered. But if like Drake is thinking 'Ship of the Line' of course the whole broadside won't be able to bear. But enough will to ream any ship design like the space battleship Yamato's axial design from one of that ship's many blind spots. Unless the planetoid's captain allows the Wave Motion Gun to lock on. Then it's well nice knowing you.

Yeah, 144 million stated budget (and I am sure they spent a ton on advertising too) and already less than half the opening total.

Someone should lose their job. They can do their social programming all they want, the film actually has to be good though.

Although it is kind of interesting to ask: if they had not made it into a political/social chew toy with their marketing and response to critics of the trailers, would it have done better or worse?

Legit question.

With Feig as EP? No.

The problem that the few neutral critics have mentioned is that there is too much ad-libbed dialogue.

The actors didn't know their characters well enough to pull it off. So even if Feig hired the likes of Paul Rudd, Jim Gaffigan, Kevin Hart, and Bill Burr it still would have suck the sewers of the Bronx on a hot, wet night.

Is it possible for an idea to be asinine, jujune, and just plain wrong without a critical listener to critique it? There are some 'works of art' like that. Recall P.J. O'Rourke discussing the fall of the ussr. That phrase stuck with me - there really are some works of art that require earthmoving equipment as a response.

A lot of reviews seem to be of the opinion that "the actors were decent. The story was shit." I almost wonder if someone at Sony saw the early cut and went " oh god this is shit!" And decree pushing the feminism angle was its only hope.

I think it probably would have wound up the same way even if they didn't go all out on the "if you don't like it you hate women" angle.

And the story is Feig's fault. He's the one that wanted the full reboot and no connection to the original.

Dear Folks,

You probably were surprised to get your own letter back but I wanted to write and had no paper so I used the back of yours.

These Belgium people sure are nice to us, they haven't much for themselves but what they have they share gladly with us.

There will be a request in every letter so you can keep the boxes coming. I could use a new pipe right now as I broke the stem off mine.

If you can't read this writing it's because I am writing it on the back of a cow and the critter won't stand still.

We have about 8 inches of snow and it's still coming down. We get pretty good food but it can't compare with home cooking. When I get home you will be busy cooking all the things I would like to have again. The cookies were still very good because you wrapped them well.

The fudge was good. Believe it or not but I made some the other day. We took over a house in a captured town and I was cook for the day. We picked up a few extra rations including sugar and cocoa so I made the boys some fudge.

We were up at the front for a while and they dropped a few shells on us but for every one they sent over we sent a hundred back.

I am wearing a dish towel for a scarf so please send me one.

So long, Rich

Posted by: Buzzion at July 24, 2016 02:33 AM (C/jFU)

I do not even think the idea of the women cast was a terrible idea, on it's face. I think it was the deliberate pissing on the fans of the originals that was the real kicker.

Obviously you could not do a direct sequel. Murray seems to have no desire to do it and Harrold Ramis is dead. If you were going to d o it with a new cast, trying to pull in the fans of the old one seemed to be a wise move to make, from a money side of things.

Reboots make money because you have a core of fans of the originals who want to see what you did with it. Reboots do not work if you look at everything that made the original popular, and then say, ok let's get rid of all of this.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at July 24, 2016 02:38 AM (3ZoRf)

272 The fault lies entirely with Feig. First for having no idea about the premise. And then no one willing to say 'hey! this really stinks and we need think on it.'

As Comic Book Girl 19 on YouTube commented about the original Ghostbusters, Gozer was supposed to have been the first boss monster they encounter 20 minutes into the film and then they realized they would need a $300 million budget for the whole movie. So they set their sights lower and made it about how it all started.

Apparently no one told Feig to stop. And he apparently never told the actresses to stop at any time. So you have dog vomit on the screen.

288 The audience has noticed the pattern of reboots, of mining old material without any real regard for it. Maybe they were a lightning rod for a pattern finally recognized, but they deserved it. Paul Feig's obvious contempt for nerds, his prime audience at this point, makes him uniquely unqualified in a way that should have been spotted before pre-production.

And stopping my smart phone program sooner, just going to land-line... even that straight to messaging. I doubt if I'll miss all that much.

I wonder how long before a lot more people start ditching some of this as well. It's addictive. What it adds is less than what it seems, to me, to take away and cost. Enjoy your show. I'll... I'm not sure? Maybe I'll get out more often. Or just enjoy a quieter life until I end.

What, prey tell, does a story about a collapse of a huge bonfire have to do with me? Or you? Maybe you have ties, though. I have no ties or cares. I'm more concerned about my neighbors.

Plus ad-libbing was one of the great strengths of the original. Bill Murray's part had originally been created for John Belushi and Murray had some gaps to fill in. Some of his most memorable lines were not in the shooting script.

It seems like Feig has a standing resentment of every movie he ever felt like an outsider when watching with straight guys and is determined to avenge himself. Even if it means shitcanning his career instead of sticking to the highly successful niche he'd carved out for himself, comedies aimed mainly at women but not painful for the guys who lost the coin flip for who chose the night's flick.

The ending was a representation of Dante's Inferno/Purgatory. Reinhardt became literally a Demonic Prince. If you read the novelization of it, it explains that the crew is flattened into a molecular pancake and they are in "heaven" via Kate's ESP(n.)

The comic book adaptation took the shuttle "making it" literally and had Maximillian/Reinhardt chasing the Crew in a new universe.

My son loved the Black Hole, and had it been on time, it would have been at worst a year after SW:ANH.

The Black Hole was a weird mix of the very old and some very innovative tech, of course it stumbled badly in some ways and is one of those films that HD treats unkindly.

320 I, for one, was never surprised by the bonfire tradegy. I say that as one who employs many TAMU grads. Good kids, one and all.

But, when you have to teach a ME grad what the hell CFM means ...

These people are designing stuff that keeps you from dying every day. All day.

Think on that for a moment ...

Their view on why Aggie Bonfire occurred(and they are LA Tech Alums) was a severe complacency and "well we got away with this again let's try harder to make it fail!" being a subconscious impulse.

326 The name they've slapped on the fire makes it sound very ominous: The Sand Fire. Like we have flammable sand here. It started near the Sand Canyon exit from the 14 Freeway that spurs off the 5 shortly before entering the Santa Clarita Valley and heads out toward the Antelope Valley, so Palmdale, Lancaster, Edwards Air Force Base.

Back in the day, even if you never had a reason to go to anything in the Antelope Valley, it was where you passed through on the way to Las Vegas depending on where you were starting. A few years back they finally connected the 210 to the 15, making for a much simpler route that many preferred even if it was a fair bit longer.

Amen, I was raised by people just older than the Boomers, although technically I guess mom in Oct of 45 was one rest her soul.

Our culture is stupid and addicted to magic thinking, failure is the handmaiden of progress. We have to allow engineers the room to fail so they can grow and test new paradigms. The loss of life while tragic pales in comparison to some other engineering disasters.

The modern western left are at heart cargo-cultists, they think this species of upright chimps with forethought magically woke up one day and voila had internet, flight, and a slew of other technical marvels. The narcissism in "only now matters" drives me to the verge of insanity. Our species is at most 300,000-1,000,000 years old, and it is only in the last 5500 years or so we have documented historical proof of a record.

There was a LOT of hard work, and failure in getting to this 5500 year old span, and there are a lot of immutable truths to the human condition big thinkers with big ideas that never work think they can magically undo.

Sorry to be a downer, I just think when we leave it will be with a whimper not with a bang.

Well, IMDB says he has been married to a woman since 1994 but he is as affected a personality as I've ever seen. Such types were generally assumed to be closeted in the past when it wasn't publicly acceptable. No children are mentioned, so perhaps the wife is a beard.

He may not be gay but he makes himself out to be someone who was never comfortable in the company of typical straight men. He recently wrote a piece, I suppose intended as satire, in which he insisted men were not funny. The caricature he painted of 'men' struck me as saying more about himself than his subject. I've never fit his profile of 'men' but that doesn't change the fact that despite both of us liking MST3K and some other stuff in common, that his personality would really start to get on my my nerves with prolonged contact.

Posted by: Epobirs at July 24, 2016 05:12 AM (IdCqF)

335 Sven, I don't think you're being a downer necessarily. I find myself in that frame of mind often.

I look around and imagine the chaos resulting from a massive internet outage.

I figure something like 40% of us would say good, the other 60% would become catatonic.

That doesn't bode well, especially since that other 60% can vote.

360 In a nearby town we had one of those wastes of taxpayer dollar situations where inner-city yoots were supposed to be taught the construction trade by refurbishing old abandoned houses. The recipient of this taxpayer largesse was one of those fly-by-night storefront ghetto churches, who would then hire and deploy the "instructors."

Hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars were funneled into this project. They "refurbished" exactly one house. Which immediately collapsed because the scam-artist instructors, who didn't have a clue what they were doing, removed a critical support beam.

I'll see if I can find a newspaper clip, it was funny in an infuriating way.

371 The night the bonfire collapsed coincided with a fierce meteor shower. It was cloudy in Houston so we had gone to Galveston and got a room at the Flagship in the hopes the sky was clear.

One of our sons, who was a student at A&M Galveston at the time had gone to CS to be with friends working the bonfire build. When we awoke to that news or hearts damned near stopped. One of his friends had jumped off that pile minutes before it fell. A son of the owner of the company I work for also missed it by minutes.

Gig 'em. That was a tough deal for A&M and the friends and families that were impacted.
