Looking at this table I'm thinking that China has been just a little too quiet for a little too long. And if Lewis Richardson got it right, we are getting near the statistical due date for a 109 death conflict.

You may have heard of the recent Alvarez supreme court decision but here is the sordid dénouement to the original case:
On a tour bus trip to Southern California Edison's Big Creek power plant, event planner Melissa Campbell was passing out snacks to dignitaries when one of them asked her a question that would change both of their lives and make U.S. judicial history."Do you know who I am?" asked Xavier Alvarez, an elected member of a local water board, not waiting for an answer.
"I am a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient."
But of course it turns out that Alvarez was never even in the military much less a recipient of the medal of honor. And this made Campbell mad enough to confront him.
Less attention has been paid to the fate of the woman who helped expose Mr. Alvarez and who brought him to the attention of the FBI. Ms. Campbell, the event planner serving Mr. Alvarez snacks on June 27, 2007, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served her country for 10 years....By the time the investigation into Mr. Alvarez was under way, Ms. Campbell had other concerns. Days after the trip to Big Creek, she said, she was suspended by the company and told that it was unprofessional to confront Mr. Alvarez.
One supervisor said, "I don't understand why you made such a big deal. You're not even a Marine anymore," Ms. Campbell recalled.
"Do you understand what they do to earn their awards?" Ms. Campbell replied.
Suspended from her job, Ms. Campbell said she later got a phone call from the company asking her to attend a meeting. When she walked into the office, she said, she saw boxes full of her belongings.
It was official, she said - she'd been fired.
Well I guess no modern legal story is complete until the guilty have gone free and the virtuous are punished.

Counter point. Went to an awesome mexican restaurant one time. Went to use the restroom and passed by the kitchen. It was by far the cleanest kitchen I have ever seen in a restaurant. The stainless looked like it was cleaned and polished hourly. The floors were immaculate.
My guess, the owner had a serious case of OCD.

It was tailor made for him to step in on the republican nominee's behalf and say..."Wait a minute...this is a slam dunk that I would pursue in a heartbeat." There is reasonably reliable evidence to the effect that Stalin intended to turn on Hitler first, and had preparations well under way for a sneak attack, except that Hitler learned of the plans and desperately pre-empted.
That explains rather neatly two aspects of the _Ostfront_:
(a) How so much Soviet arms and material were destroyed so quickly by the Germans. It has all been quietly forward-deployed into the western military districts of the USSR in preparation for the surprise strike toward Germany.
(b) Why the Germans had so much trouble sustaining their rapid advances. Their legendary General Staff mechanisms simply had not had time to plan out an eastern war with the level of deliberation and precision which they would normally have insisted upon in advance. Logistics were hence not up to standard. Frontline units went unsupplied.

Interesting theory. I do not disputer the fact that Stalin intended to turn on Hitler- that marriage was a sham on both sides and they both knew it. One major factor though:
Stalin had just had a military leadership purge. I forget the exact numbers but this purge took almost the entire officer corps and even into the NCO's. If he had planned an immediate attack, he would not have done this, IMHO. He was evil, but not stupid.

For many laptops (broadcom chip, IIRC), if you "respond" to their transmission to their wifi with a particularly malformed answer, they'll barf up the wifi password in cleartext. You can then use this to log onto the wifi yourself.

Not to mention the Stalinist purges of the Red Army officer corps in '38-39 rendered them totally incapable of properly managing the technical aspects of modern warfare. A state of affairs that was only reinforced by the Red Army's woeful performance in the Winter War, when the Finns kicked the shit out of them. I suspect that the Nazis saw that and just decided that Stalin was a paper tiger who just needed a firm push to topple over, so their own failings in preparation didn't matter so much.

And they strong-armed the Romanians with threat of invasion. Romania agreed to the demands, which caused Hungary and Bulgaria to decide that Romania was weak, and they could do the same. The Bulgarian demands were minor, but Hungary wanted Transylvania (which is pretty big)... and Germany and Italy hammered out a treaty that gave Hungary most of what it wanted.
So when Germany came around in 1941 looking for allies to help invade the USSR, Romania figured that it could -
1.) Get back the territories that the USSR had seized, and
2.) Be a good ally to Germany during the war, and after Germany won (because everyone knew that Germany would clean up the USSR, just as it did France), Hitler might agree to take another look at that treaty with Hungary and come to a more pro-Romanian position on it.
And while Hungary and Italy pulled all of their troops out of the Soviet Union following Stalingrad, Romania did not.
So, ironically, Uncle Joe's greed on the Romanian border likely provided Nazi Germany with its most reliable supporter (right up until the USSR reached the Romanian border - at which point, Romania defected to the Allies), and a huge source of the petroleum that Germany's military needed to operate.

Stalin did intend to turn on Hitler, but he wasn't ready for it at the time. For instance, the T-34, which was an amazing leap forward in tank technology, was just barely starting to roll off the assembly line. More than likely, Stalin's offensive was still a couple of years away.
Plus, Hitler had always intended to go after the Soviets. He viewed Communists as the natural enemy of his National Socialists. And while he had respect for the French and other Western Europeans, the Slavs of Eastern Europe were viewed as sub-humans, who were only fit to be exterminated in order to make more "living space" available for the citizens of Nazi Germany.
So, in the Summer of 1941, flush with the amazing success that he'd had the previous year in France (sometimes by overruling his generals), Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa.
And, truth be told, the Germans did have amazing success, after amazing success, after amazing success. But here's the thing - the USSR is a lot bigger than Western Europe (but keep in mind that it's significantly further from LA to NY than it is from London to Moscow...). And the road net in much of the USSR at the time was really, really bad. So not only were the Germans struggling with the size of the country (and they still almost reached Moscow), but they were also trying to send supplies over a really poor network of roads.

Someone here once suggested that the best way to stop this whining about someone the band doesn't like using their music was to then ask the band to refund the fees. If they band didn't, they'd have to shut up. If the band did, thank them very publicly for their generous donation to the campaign.

The German problem was that they never had enough equipment to go around, particularly when they started scrambling in late 1941 to find something that could deal with the T-34 (since it was all but immune to just about everything that they had readily available outside of 88s.). So they came up with a ton of ideas that - frequently - got needed guns on any available chassis.
The resultant mess was a nightmare for the logistical departments, but it made life somewhat easier for the troops on the front lines.
Note that the US started to drift this way toward the end of the war with the multiple Sherman variants. There were multiple hulls, with three different guns spread across the hulls (though not all of the hulls got all of the guns), and Jumbos thrown in to boot. Plus the new suspension system.
So, you ended up with designations such as M4A3E8(76) - aka 'Easy Eight'.

You have to define things very carefully. What you mean by "freezing" (do you mean the first formation of ice crystals, when the sample is frozen solid, or something in between).
It turns out the true Mpemba Effect is not likely going to happen with most sources of tap water.
There is what the author considers a faux Mpemba Effect. Hot water placed on a frost bed inside a freezer will melt some of the frost, then "stick" and create a much better thermal conductance between the hot water container and the environment.
He reproduces that effect under controlled conditions, then rejects this by definition as not "everything being equal". This faux Mpemba Effect is likely what most people who think they see this are observing.
The true Mpemba Effect is when you have a sample that is the same as far as the thermal conductance and all that. Everything is the same except for the water sample, and the temperature.
To do this, he goes to a lot of trouble. As you would expect, the colder temperature sample always goes to 0C faster than the higher temperature sample.
The differences that give rise to the true Mpemba Effect are in the supercooling properties of the sample.

A lot of tanks designed in the inter-war period had multiple turrets, though the T-35 took the cake as it was essentially a tank designed like a warship.
But then the fighting actually started, and tank designers discovered that it was much better to mount a single large gun as opposed to multiple small ones. The only multi-gun tank that really had much of an effect on the war was the US M3. And that's probably because of its solid armor (at the time of its introduction, it gave the German tanks fits), and the fact that the twin gun design was more of an emergency expedient (the US didn't have a turret that could mount the M3's 75mm gun, so the 75mm gun went into the hull while the turret got a 37mm gun instead), as opposed to something that a tank designer thought would be a really good idea.

In fact, this is the reason for the observed phenomenon of hot water pipes bursting more than cold. They supercool more, but when the finally freeze, they do it rapidly, causing a much greater expansion shock to the pipe.
Here's another interesting thing. Most "water in the wild", the water that you get, is gonna supercool pretty good (to -10C give or take a few degrees) before it starts freezing. He found that "vigorous shaking" of samples before the freezing measurement can change that temperature, greatly. In most samples, shaking lowered the temp, but in a few it raised it greatly.
So, get a sample with a spontaneous freezing temp of a little over 5C of another, and you can get the former to freeze first when it heated to 100C, vs a "cold sample" that starts out itself somewhat supercooled, a little below 0C.
This guy, a physicist did years of research on this in his spare time and published in 2010.

Worse than the multiple turrets that could not be co ordinated, was that the T-35 was meant to be a heavy tank. It was... too heavy and long for it's drive system, but... it's armour was quite poor. The wash up was that it could do no job well. Too slow and heavy to use as a medium, too weakly armoured to serve as a heavy, eeven in the infantry support role.

They blink the lights to make them dimmer. You can't see it with naked eye but on camera they strobe like that.

That's one thing that surprised me when I moved to TX. After decades of dodging the shitty drivers in SoCal, it was a relief to share the road with TX drivers, who seem to have their shit together. The one exception to that rule is the VERY common Texas habit of driving slow in the fast lane.

It was a function of WW1. Many still thought the tank was an infantry support vehicle. The Germans (as well as Patton and MacArthur to a degree) realized it an offensive fist to bust through lines and clear the way for the infantry.

I drove through Texas in '92 for Spring Break. I was very impressed how people were quick to move over for faster traffic. Being young, every traffic was slower traffic.
Then, Dallas at rush hour. It was the automotive equivalent to High Noon in Dodge City. Or it least it seemed that way to my 22 year old, (then) small town self in my '79 Monte Carlo that the mechanic said would never make it (it did).

Same thing used to happen with wagon wheels in Western movies. The frame rate of the camera made the wheels appear to turn backwards. Aliasing, I guess, right?
And it still happens on TV to this day. Especially in car ads. You see the latest Belchfire V6 crossover SUV, and its spoked wheels appear to be turning backwards. Doh! Look, idiots. It's a 30 second commercial. You have to the technology to correct this, frame by frame, and make it look right. Hell, Walt Disney could have done it in 1930. Smarten up, eh.

I think Atlantis was either a real civilization that, while not as advanced as portrayed in later sci-fi, was far ahead of its time in many ways.
Or it's just an allegory for what humanity could achieve if we put aside our petty squabbles.
As a child, I loved Greek and Roman mythology. Growing up, I realized so much of it was lost. I wonder how the stories continued, in pot shards and fragments of parchment long since destroyed. Did Zeus ever fall pray to a coup like his father and his grandfather before him?
To me, it's both vexing and thrilling that so much of that mythology is no longer extant.

Seeger's band, The Almanac Singers, had recorded an album shortly before Hitler invaded Russia, which basically pimped an isolationist viewpoint not far removed from that espoused by Father Coughlin, an avowed America Firster. Then Hitler invaded Russia, and Nazi Germany suddenly became an implacable enemy instead of a brother Socialist State. Day and Night, it was. The Almanac Singers begged their fans to return copies of that album so they could be destroyed, and replaced with ones more politically correct.

One thing I'm relatively sure of - there *was* a great flood at some
point. Maybe not as grand as described in Genesis, but there are too
many similar stories (Noah, Decaulion, Atrahasus) for it to just be

If I recall correctly, the Mediterranean Sea was a vast rift valley, teeming with life, until the straits of Gibraltar were broken 5.3 million years ago with the Zanclean flood. We homo sapiens have been around for what, 200Kyr? Maybe longer. Yet history is only 5000 yrs old. You can easily fit other 5000 yr periods in that timeline without making much a dent in the whole thing. So we went around for 195,000 yrs, living like cavemen, and only in the last 5000 started using our senses better?

Well also consider how long its taken humanity to spread across the globe but we weren't always a global species. So you're going to always be having those bursts of progress followed by a collapse sort of like what Europe experienced with the fall of Rome. The Klamath Indians, for instance, depict the collapse of Mount Mazama around 5677 BC as a battle between Llao, god of the underworld -- and Skell, god of the sky. While this must have been impressive to anyone nearby, its impact to the region would be dwarfed by the flooding of the Mediterranean basin.

Based on an article I read a while back about early Japanese Christianity, if Oda Nobunaga hadn't been killed, then Christianity might have managed to gain a foothold (he became a Christian because it provided excuses for him to go to war, but it appears that he would have been fine tolerating it). But Tokugawa eventually won the Sengoku-era wars, and he was much more of a conservative traditionalist.

I recently listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History on the Fall of the Roman Republic. Egypt does play a role, because Caesar. Apparently the Ptolemy Pharaoh's never bothered to learn to speak Egyptian and just spoke Greek. And they were Greek but practiced the Egyptian tradition of the only blood a Pharaoh is worth marrying is royal blood, so that means your sister. Cleopatra was one of those sisters. Of course she was also unique in that she actually spoke Egyptian as well.

This Hall of Records thing started with, or the modern form, with Edgar Cayce, "The American Prophet", who would go into trances and divine all sorts of shits, like past lives in Atlantis and all that stuff. He prophesied that the Hall of Records would be found by now.
So we have conspiracy theories that it has been found, by the US government, and they're covering it up, because "we can't handle the truth" and all that.
They've even got pyramids and Sphinxes in Alaska, with tales of Men in Black covering it up, and secret bases built around them, where they uncover the secrets.

I would not be surprised if some group of highly placed people are plotting the means by which they'll reduced the number of humans on the planet by at least a third. Depending on your particular focus, it will solve nearly every big problem. National economy being crushed under the weight of unpayable pensions for a elderly population that relies on a far less numerous generation to hold things together? Get rid of a lot of old people in a short period and you'll free up a huge chunk of money from those pensions and make the problem of elder care manageable. Worried about the environment? A lot less humans means far less environmental wear and tear without any great impact to standards of living. Got a particular ideology hell bent on conquering a world they are incapable of maintaining due to the same ideology? I'll give you one guess.
Somewhere, possibly in multiple places, there is at least one group who figures they know the perfect flowchart for deciding who stays and who goes, and determining the means to make it happen. I've suspected the current administration Middle East policy is an example of this. It makes a lot more sense of the objective is for multiple ME countries to gain nuclear capability but delivery capability limited to the region. Having the whole region actually catch fire would seem a perfect solution to those who figure it would be worth losing the oil if it meant the region simply ceased to be an issue for the rest of the world.

securing like favors to themselves, have a right to complain of the
injustice of their Government. There are no necessary evils in

against section, interest against interest, and man against man, in a

It is time to pause in our career to review our principles, and if
possible revive that devoted patriotism and spirit of compromise which
distinguished the sages of the Revolution and the fathers of our Union.

take a stand against all new grants of monopolies and exclusive
privileges, against any prostitution of our Government to the
advancement of the few at the expense of the many, and in favor of
compromise and gradual reform in our code of laws and system of

citizens, I shall be grateful and happy; if not, I shall find in the
motives which impel me ample grounds for contentment and peace. In the

I think they proved the call a hoax. There was something in the background of the recording that wouldn't be heard up in a small plane or something.
You can try to get in that air base. They will catch you rather quickly, and the usual procedure is the guards turn you over to the Sheriff. And they will catch you, they've got some pretty sophisticated technology to catch humans trying to cross into the base space. Be nice if they'd use that on the border......
Of course, if they thought you were some real security threat, it might federal crime territory. I remember something about people upset that Art and similar would be encouraging this kind of thing, which would get idiots in big trouble.

Betsy doesn't even get around to the worst part, from a fiscal point of view. Clinton proposes an age 55 Medicare age, down from 65, despite the fact that Medicare is already stretched and runs completely in the red in just ten years.
Think about that: she's talking about removing roughly a quarter of the tax contributors (the age 55 to age 65 folks) from the revenue side of the equation, even while adding roughly a third to the beneficiary side (that same 55-65 age group).
The program will explode over night. This is all a plan to reduce the medical care provided to the elderly. If there were a genuine concern for them, she'd propose going the other way, and make the new sign-up age 67 or even 70.

For two years I've watched lines of thunderstorms approach our county, only to wash out or break apart when they hit the western county line. While the rest of the state has plenty of moisture we're barely getting by.
This pattern is so remarkable that I'm wondering what influences it. Maybe it's the Big River, though it doesn't seem to affect anywhere else. Maybe it's the nuke plant across the river. Whatever it is, it happens every last time. A front that looks like the end of the world bears down on us and then just evaporates. Very frustrating.
Also, I'm noting wind farms showing up on weather radar. Didn't expect that.

What is even worse is that you are all but forced to sign up for it now when you reach 65. Even if you already have insurance provided by someone else. If you don't and later have to sign up for it they penalize the crap out of you. And that I do not understand at all.

.I was thinking about that yesterday and came to the conclusion it is a big game they play.
The gin up some controversy over something that really isn't a big deal and then after some time they call on the campaign to "fire" whoever was responsible, in this case it would be her speech writer. Then if they do fire someone they get to declare victory because they held the Campaign accountable. From that point on the Campaign does what they say every time because they don't want bad publicity.
The problem with playing games like that this Campaign cycle is that Trump doesn't play by their rules, and they haven't figured it out yet.

.The Wife and I are on Tricare but we wont go to Tricare For Life for another 5 years. I have heard nothing about moving us to any other plan. All I keep seeing is they want to increase the premiums and co-pays for our "free" healthcare and force everyone to use the Tricare mail order pharmacy which has very restrictive rules and doesn't carry near as many different drugs as the local Kroger does.

I keep getting notices from United Healthcare inviting me to go on a mail order pharmacy. Although that would actually be more convenient, I am scared that I will suffer from late mail deliveries and coordination between the doctor and the druggists. Here in SC we are required by law to see our doctor at least once every six months to renew prescriptions. Even for long term maintenance drugs. In GA my brothers only have to go once a year.

We got something similar to that...maybe the same thing...a couple of years ago. It actually included a brand new dollar for filling out the survey. We did not do that. It went straight to garbage, but the dollar is tucked into a crack in the kitchen cabinets. If they ever come to prosecute me for not filling out their survey they can have it back.
