Popov was part of the Twenty Committee of double agents who made the program work. Dubbed "Tricycle," Popov was a triple agent supposedly working for Yugoslavian intelligence, the German military intelligence apparatus the Abwehr, and the British, hence his odd alias. He spoke fluent German, had many highly placed German friends, and ran an import/export business, all perfect cover for a spy. He absolutely loathed the Nazis, which ironically turned out to be the reason he was recruited by them. His Abwehr contact, Johann Jebsen, was a close friend from Popov's college days and hated the Nazis as much as Popov did. Jebsen cheerfully lied about Popov's dedication to the Nazi cause, likely doing so to his superiors even as Popov himself was asking the British if they could use a double agent. Popov was central to, among other deceptions, Operation Bodyguard, which tricked the Nazis into believing an invasion at Calais was imminent, directing men and weapons far, far away from the real invasion at Normandy.
Popov's appetite for booze, women, and gambling was legendary. In fact, the new biography of Popov relates how he used $50,000 of MI6's money to shame a flamboyant gambler, a moment that likely inspired Casino Royale and that Fleming allegedly witnessed personally. When Bloch, an arrogant gambler, announced that he was playing for unlimited stakes, Popov casually threw the money on the table. Bloch couldn't get the casino to stake him, and immediately chickened out.
It wasn't all fun for Popov. He also had to build and run a fake network of spies while not tipping his hands to the Germans, and there was an emotional cost no one saw coming. Jebsen, who later worked for the British as part of the Twenty Committee himself, was abducted and interrogated by the SS in 1944. It's believed it may have been to determine how much the British knew about Popov's false network of spies in Britain. Jebsen's ultimate fate has never been determined, but we know he didn't break when interrogated; Jebsen knew many key details about Bodyguard and could have tipped the Nazis off to D-Day before it even started.

Then I return to this news, and wish I had taken more careful aim instead of just plinking.

Unintentionally shooting a bullet down an adversary's barrel isn't QUITE as miraculous as it seems. As I recall, a lot of wounds in gunfights occur to the hands and arms, more than one would think. It's because tunnel vision sets in and people tend to focus on the gun. Stands to reason that that is where the bullets end up going.

57 I admit I use a pad on the stock on my Mosins. That way shooting 50-75 rounds is far less painful the next day. Recall that, at least in fall and winter, Soviet soldiers had fairly heavy coats that would have considerably cushioned the recoil impact of those steel butt plates.

61 I checked out my stupid well. The tank was good, charge was fine, slightly low pressure, only had lost a couple psi in over a year, maybe two. No leaks, stand pipe in well holding pressure fine.

So, that means the air blowing was most likely, almost certainly the water level getting down to the intake down there and letting it suck air. It straightened out and hasn't done it again, but this is likely going to be a problem. We hadn't been using any more water than normal, likely less. It's been drier than it is now, and for much longer and this well never gave a peep of trouble through all that.

Something is happening, and it's likely the start of some trouble with that well. This system has gone over 30 years without a peep of trouble. I've got it on a separate electrical service, little pole job, and I had to replace that about 5 years ago or so. But that's not the water, it's the power.

I'm not so sure about this. There's video of police chasing the truck early on and being outrun by it plus you there were a lot of gun shots into the cab and the driver was still able to get out and shoot at people. This is where rifles are needed.

And unless we put up anti-vehicle protection at all crowded events we shouldn't be so smug since we're just as vulnerable here.

I think it would slow the truck down if you got enough tires but unlike police chases where they lay down spike stripes, the driver in this case only had to go faster than people could run.

With 3-phase I've got at the shop, I could put in a nice three-phase submersible pump, and get some capacity with much lower current (but running three wires, four if I want a neutral out there). Provided the well could supply it.

Wells are sort of hit and miss around her. One spot can be a dry hole, but move a few hundred yards and you get a good one. It's the geology.

But the problem is well driller actually want to be paid money, and they like it. I'm going to start bullshitting with a few of 'em around here and see what they'll say.

On a big rig with air brakes, shoot out the air tank, if you can identify it. Total loss of air pressure means the brakes will lock up, and there's nothing the driver can do (from behind the wheel) to prevent it.

233 If you could think, and the differential covers are thin steel, concentrated rifle fire at the differential case could screw it up and stop it. And you could test the .50 BMG through an engine block. It will have to go through the body.

I think you want something like 20mm cannon to be sure to take out a truck like that. Or RPGs, shit like that.

If you just put a pile of concentrated rifle fire, .308 speed, all at the front, you'd eventually do some show stopping damage to the engine. The cooling system would be destroyed easily, but that takes time.

I think the best is to try to kill the driver quickly. That doesn't stop the vehicle, but it ends conscious control.

In theory.
In reality, you'd have to be positioned in such a place with rifle in hand that as soon as a vehicle presented itself as a threat, you punch into that primary tank.

The downside is that with all the check valves and other tanks, and a compressor running at engine speed, those tanks won't bleed out fast enough to pop the spring brakes before an attack like Nice is accomplished. Even with a 30 cal hole in one side and a 40 cal hole in the other.

Looks like a good fixed defence. A few such, staggered, would allow slow-moving vehicles to enter/exit the protected area, but block those moving at excessive speed. And the armed guards could vet the operators of slow-moving rigs.

There are similar devices with steel bollards loaded into tubes in the ground that shoot up when the guard hits a switch. So vehicles can pass through freely but if one comes barreling at the gate without stopping, the device get triggered.

342 I remember a while back when I first got that LR-308, I had this old battery box in the scrap iron heap. It was from some old earth moving equipment that someone had discarded out the woods near some job site. The bottom had rusted out, and they just threw it away.

The sides were still good, and some thick steel. It was somewhere between 1/8" and 1/4" eyeballing it. It was heavy. It still had yellow paint on it, and made a good long range target.

I put a scope on the thing and was sighting it in. I just used the lazy man's trick of short zeroing, taking advantage of the near zero equalling a long zero.

I then put the yellow battery box at the long range zero, then fine tuned it. Those .308s at 200 yds, or 250 or whatever it was I was going for would punch a clean hole through one side, then take a bigger hole out of the back, doing more bending on the back side.

So yep, thinking about that, it probably would punch a hole in a standard air tank first time, head on.

I remember I had FMJ and some soft point crap. I think both of them would punch threw fairly easily, soft point making a bigger ripping hole on the back or something.

I said all this about Bush's strategy back when it started. I supported the invasion of Iraq, but that was supposed to be just to wrest control of the oil fields from the savages and to provide a base to move on Iran, who were the most serious and largest threat. Bush went into Iraq correctly but then pussed out on the larger strategic plan that had to be carried out. He didn't take control of the oil fields and he didn't put a government in charge that could keep the place truly in line. He blew it in Afghanistan, too. Again, he barely won things there. Barely.

He left Iran untouched - even as iran had been actively fighting against us in iraq.. He left things barely being held together by rented arab mobs in iraq and afghani puppets - who weren't the right kinds of puppets or mobs. It was a total mess and it was all because Bush only did the absolute minimum.

This is not some view I have come to in hindsight. If you so demand I guess I could find comments I posted here, at the time, that detail all of these problems (and more) that I have written over the many years.

Our soldiers fought with two hands tied behind their backs and were never freed to carry out a real war - which is the only way to arrive at the end of such wars.

The same phenomenon happens with long-term open-ended wars.

Wars of necessity are often, by definition, a gamble.

A war of convenience should NEVER be a gamble.

You should be prepared to expend immediate and overwhelming force and you must bring it to closure in two to three years. Otherwise - like I said, it's a war of convenience, if you aren't sure you can't win then you need to think about whether you should go at all.

If the issue at hand is serious enough then fifty thousand dead in one year in a thoroughly successful campaign is vastly preferable to five thousand dead per year in something that drags on inconclusively for a decade.

If the issue isn't serious enough to make that commitment then you better consider what you're doing in the first place.

Unfortunately we simply don't have the forces to occupy a country like Iraq at a local enough level to even attempt to enforce this. And there aren't enough non-Muslims to come anywhere close to filling all the necessary government positions.

Plus I can't think of any case where an occupying force was ever able to force a population to convert away from their current religion and stop practicing it without near genocidal levels of killing. The closest analogy might be the Spanish conquest but even then it took decades of missionary work and was helped along by a lot of native american deaths from various means. Not to mention that Islam has some features that make it a much harder nut to crack than the religions of central and south america at that time.

Christianity bears a direct relation to Judaism - it started as a jewish sect - but islam bears no relationship to either Judaism or Christianity. The cultural resistance and reaction was interesting (and sickening) to see in real time. Instead of plastering the videos from 9/11 on TV and posters, we hid them. The images of Arabs celebrating on that day should have been a reminder, but those were hidden away too.

You are right though. Until people get a stark and gut level reality check, they will stay asleep because it is not an existential threat. Easier to believe the lies that they are all good people and we must have done something to bring it on ourselves.

I come to you deeply in grief. Tonight, my Dad had a heart attack. Things aren't looking great. They are looking better than they were 5 hours ago.

It was a knock at the door you never expect to get. And, then you get it, and it turns your world on its head. You don't know what to do with the dog. You leave the TV on, you leave the lights on, you just park in the middle of the road, whether it is a parking spot or not.

I am currently at home, getting clothes for my mom, medicine, her glasses, and all the important things. They successfully put a stint in. They said it will be 24 hours (Probably about 22 now) before they can give us a prognosis. His heart is functioning, but now they are worried about the other organs...brain activity, things like that.

Any spare prayers or thoughts you can give would be appreciated. My mom is tough, but she will hit a wall I'm sure.

I had not recalled that Malcolm MacDowell's character Alex had the last name "Burgess", which was the last name of author Anthony Burgess, who wrote the book on which the movie was based. IIRC, he was not a fan of the movie.

Adrienne Corri, who passed away earlier this year, played the woman who was raped by Alex and his droogs. The singing of the song, "Singin' in the Rain" during that act was an improvisation, IIRC. Corri also played Lara's (i. e. Julie Christie's) mother who attempted suicide in "Doctor Zhivago".

Thoughts and prayers indeed....and some advice. The hospital will look after hospitalized people -- make sure you look after the other ones to make sure they aren't also hospitalized. When I arrived at the Parkersburg, WV, ICU where my grandfather was, I was there less than an hour before my grandmother called the staff to say she was running late.....because she was in the ER downstairs, being treated for dehydration.

identify it. Total loss of air pressure means the brakes will lock up,

The air tanks are the cylindrical tanks on either side down low.

There are two you need to hit. They are mostly independent, so losing one does not lock the brakes.

Normal air pressure is around 100 psi. That air pressure overcomes some large springs that want to slam the brake pads together. At around 60 psi, or at least 30 psi, the spring forces overcome the air pressure. The brakes come together, and the vehicle stops. It's not like a lock the brakes and skid, but it happens fast.

It is often heard in Constitutional Law classes that the Constitution is not a suicide pact.

Though it has to be remembered that there was once a lot of votes behind the idea of not letting Catholics immigrate on the basis that they were loyal to a foreign power. An argument can be made that one cannot be an observant Muslim and not violates the Constitutional rights of non-Muslims but you could make the same argument about orthodox Jews. Some of the stuff in Exodus where Moses is laying down the laws God dictates after the 10 Commandments get pretty extreme to modern ears. (In 'Outrageous Tales From The Old Testament' a comic strip portrayal depicts the crowd listening to Moses executing guilty members as each law is proclaimed, until the last listener is left to bash his own head in with a rock, so that when Moses finishes and looks up he finds himself surrounded by corpses.)

This is what I mean about civilizational identity. The British Empire could possibly have wiped out Islam if they regarded it as an existential threat rather than something happening far, far away but who today could do it? China? Would you want to share the globe with a China that had done that?

I highly recommend the Robert Spencer book 'Did Mohammed Exist?' He finds there is little or no evidence for the Koran existing in anything like the final form until a good two centuries after Mohammed's supposed lifetime. It looks very likely that the bulk of the writing didn't come about until the Arabs had themselves a newborn empire and and needed a unifying mythology to bind it together while it expanded.

I'm willing to exterminate 90% of each group for other reasons without entertaining the thought that it's genocide -- that's about 450 million Arabs; 1.5 billion Muslims, 72 million Iranians, and I won't even begin on the Semites (there's obviously significant overlap).
