I've always liked Heather MacDonald's articles in The City Journal. Her work is scholarly, erudite, and facts-and-research-based. She's a conservative who I am glad is one my side, doing what she can to fight the good fight. Her latest City Journal piece, Chicago on the Brink is a cautionary tale of what happens to a city when the police back away from pedestrian stops and public-order policing, i.e. reduce their visible presence in a neighborhood to a minimum. What happens is that crime increases, which means that more black people die. And she demonstrates this using facts and logic.

But never mind that. #BlackLivesMatter!

Her new book, The War on Cops: How the New Attack on Law and Order Makes Everyone Less Safe, is a bestseller.

Violent crime has been rising sharply in many American cities after two decades of decline. Homicides jumped nearly 17 percent in 2015 in the largest 50 cities, the biggest one-year increase since 1993. The reason is what Heather Mac Donald first identified nationally as the “Ferguson effect”: Since the 2014 police shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, officers have been backing off of proactive policing, and criminals are becoming emboldened.

This book expands on Mac Donald’s groundbreaking and controversial reporting on the Ferguson effect and the criminal-justice system. It deconstructs the central narrative of the Black Lives Matter movement: that racist cops are the greatest threat to young black males. On the contrary, it is criminals and gangbangers who are responsible for the high black homicide death rate.

But never mind that. #BlackLivesMatter!

Slogans, not facts!

And for more on #BlackLivesMatter, there's Black Lies Matter: Why Lies Matter to the Race Grievance Industry by Taleeb Starkes, who discusses

...a certain black-based industry — which specializes in nurturing comfortable lies while burying uncomfortable truths — propagates a notion that “racism” is the foremost issue facing black Americans, and white cops are blood-thirsty enforcers. Moreover, this cunning, race-peddling entity knows that it's easier to lie to blacks than to convince blacks that they've been lied to. Thus, black "lies" are good for business... black "lives" are good for nothing (except exploitation). And presently, business is booming.

And speaking of bad ideas, Heather MacDonald is also the author of The Burden of Bad Ideas: How Modern Intellectuals Misshape Our Society. What bad ideas? How about:

At a Brooklyn high school, students perfect their graffiti skills for academic credit. An Ivy League law professor urges blacks to steal from their employers. Washington bureaucrats regard theft by drug addicts as evidence of disability, thereby justifying benefits. Public health officials argue that racism and sexism cause women to get AIDS. America's premier monument to knowledge, the Smithsonian Institution, portrays science as white man's religion.

To these I would add the idea that a corrupt, cynical ex-Secretary of State who has peddled influence for cash, ran interference for her husband's sexual predation for at least two decades, and brazenly lied to the public about her carelessness in handling classified documents is qualified to be the next President of the United States.

Anyway:

And while these beliefs have damaged the nation as a whole, she observes, they have hit the poor especially hard.

See, that's thing. Progressives are always proclaiming their great concern for the poor, but all of their end up hurting the poor. The rich always have money and resources to shield themselves from the consequences of their folly. For example, driving while drunk is, generally, a Bad Idea, but if you're Ted Kennedy, your powerful friends will make sure that the authorities will buy your cock-and-bull story about how your abandonment of a drowning woman was not really your fault.

Or, more to the point, who is it exactly who started spreading around the pernicious idea that single motherhood is something to be praised? I don't know, but I have an idea: rich, liberal white women, who can afford to be stupid. If you're poor, though, being a single mom is really tough, and perhaps that kind of living arrangement ought not to be encouraged, wherever possible.

Of course, we know that progressives don't give a damn about the poor, they just want to them to bend over so they can climb up on their backs to reach the levers of power. That's all the poor are good for to the left.

Metamorphosis

According to this article in Business Insider, a giant kinetic sculpture of the head of Czech author Franz Kafka has been installed on the outside of the city hall in Prague.

Artist David Černý says his sculpture, entitled K on Sun, is to remind you of Kafka when you're "totally frustrated by the incompetence of state employees."

If that was his intention, maybe he should have set up a shooting gallery or a dunk tank instead.

The sculpture is in Prague, right next to a building in which Kafka himself once worked as a clerk in an insurance comp any, and across from City Hall.

So it sounds like Kafka spent most of his life at the vortex of a giant sinkhole of bureaucratic suck that annihilates all life and hope. Which, actually, would explain a lot of his writing.

Live-In Library Employment

H/T to several of you morons who sent me a link to this piece about the New York Public Library Superintendents whose employment included the perk of living in an apartment on the library premesis, in an apartment off to one side.

I guess I should've said "used to be".

Unfortunately, the days of live-in superintendents at libraries appear to be over. The last known live-in superintendent moved out of the NYPL's Webster Branch, located at 1468 York Avenue in Yorkville, in 2006. From the Port-Richmond Branch in Staten Island to the Morrisania Branch in the Bronx, however, the city's libraries were once home to dozens of live-in superintendents and their families.

So we missed out by a half-dozen years. And what were the job requirements for such a position?

[they] would likely include everything from a great command of English to the ability to supervise staff to a general knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC and carpentry repair. Many current live-in superintendent positions also require applicants to have a high-level of computer skills and experience working with one or more building management software programs. Finally, anyone interested in taking on the role of live-in superintendent needs to be committed to working around the clock and working year-round.

That's a pretty gnarly skill set and I wonder how many people can actually match it? Particularly since some of them appear to be at cross-purposes, i.e. if you're an HVAC guy, you're probably not going to know a lot about computers. I could be wrong, but to me, this sort of sounds like advertising for an artist who has sold commissioned works and who also understands differential equations. It's pretty much a truism that if you're good at the one thing, you're not going to be good at the other.

Moron Recommendations

Longtime moron Fritzworth recommends a YA book written by fellow Utahan Dave Butler, The Kidnap Plot (The Extraordinary Journeys of Clockwork Charlie), and here, "YA" means ages 8-12. FW says:

Butler has blended SF, fantasy, alternate history and steampunk into a non-stop adventure tale that is accessible to children without ever being condescending or simplistic. And, like any excellent "child's" entertainment, there's a lot for adults to read between the lines here. I would have loved this book as an 8-year-old (of course, I started reading Heinlein at that age), and I thoroughly loved it now. Highly recommended for all ages.

FW also observes that "the exact same plot and events could have been written as an adult novel, and it would have been great as well."

Again dipping into ace's book rec thread (which I've been dining out on for weeks now), I notice that alexthechick is enjoying Influx by Daniel Suarez. She says this book is "an interesting conceit and well done so far."

Perhaps it did arrive...but only for a select few.

Books by Morons

Moron author Michael Hooten has a new book out. And unlike his first two, Cricket's Song and A Bard Without a Star), which were fantasy, We Are All Enlisted is science fiction:

It takes place in the near future (the 2080's), and is a about a boy who joins the Navy on Earth expecting to go to a ship or a sub, but instead ends up in the space command. He's an enlisted man, as are most of the characters. I wrote it in part because all the stories involving the military seem to be about the officers, and they make up only a small part of any military. The ordinary grunts, or in this case squids, do all the work and get none of the credit. If you don't believe me, just ask any of them.

Perhaps Hooten should have titled his new book Squids In Space.

5 So this week, I finished reading Heinlein's "Double Star" as part of my RAH re-reading program. As I expected, I enjoyed it very much.

I got a yard sale copy of Niven's "Ringworld Engineers", because I've never read any of this stuff and it keeps getting recommended here. Stopped reading it after a couple of pages because it was clear I'd enjoy it more if I had read "Ringworld". So yesterday Amazon came through and I started on "Ringworld" last night. I think I made two good choices and will have some enjoyable reading ahead.

I also finished reading a Kindle version of Sarah Hoyt/D'Almeida's "Death of a Musketeer" which I quite enjoyed and I think I will be looking for more of her books in the future!

6 This week reading, 'The Korean War', by Max Hastings. Well written. Filled with micro details regarding all aspects, political, military, and personal of the war.

7 Ah le Book Thread; best thread of the week. Have been working on the three book series dealing with the "Talents Saga". It is a prequel to the "Tower and Hive" series. I had the first two books already in paperback and had not read them in a while. I have never read the third book at all. Which is what led me to go ahead and hit this series once again on the Kindle.

13 Leftists are completely incapable of distinguishing between discouraging bad ideas and condemning entire groups of people.

It is not a terrible thing to say, "For the sake of your future children, wait until you are in a stable relationship, and hopefully a marriage, before you conceive them."

That's not judging single mothers. It's not saying that single mothers are terrible people. It's only saying that you and your children will be far better off if you have two incomes and two people supporting your family. It's pretty good advice!

But leftists would insist that such a statement is sexist, judgmental and probably racist. They would seek to affirm single mothers and all of their decisions, not caring that this affirmation of poor decision-making leads to more women and children existing in poverty.

You can extend this to several different arenas. You shouldn't be written off as a religious scold if you tell young people to practice abstinence, you're not a homophobe if you announce that homosexual activity can be dangerous, you're not a racist if you think the solution to problems in the black community is that they stay in school.

The funny thing is- I know all of these things, I've done all of these things and I have a successful life. I don't need to be told any of this, so if leftists and their minions would like to write me off as a bigot and totally ignore this, they do so only at their own peril. My life continues, unabated.

If you like post-apocalyptic/zombie fiction, this book is fantastic. Well drawn and disparate characters with multiple converging story lines, good dialogue, well done action scenes. The book has it all. You should definitely check it out.

19 Also, I have to recommend The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright.

I was 14 years old on 9/11, so maybe the book won't be as shocking to people who were adults on that day. But I'd always had a perception that the true horror of 9/11 was when the second plane hit the WTC. Reading this book, it was horrifying to realize that quite a few people would have seen the first plane hit and known exactly what was going on.

Or even two days earlier, when Ahmed Shah Massoud was assassinated (an event most Americans didn't even notice), some analysts realized that bin Laden was appeasing the Taliban and something big was about to happen.

I won't even go into the myriad of conflicts between the CIA and FBI that resulted in no one having the whole picture, thus allowing the attack to proceed.

Read the book.

One day last week, I was surprised while watching Jeopardy when one of the questions had to do the book genres associated with authors. Up popped Jack Kjelgaard. The contestants stood mute, as I muttered 'dogs' and glanced at my boyhood copy of 'Big Red' on a nearby bookshelf.

24 Since I'd already read Loyal Valley: Assassination, the Horde book of the month, I read the sequel Loyal Valley: Bystanders by Elizabeth Wolfe. Denizens of Loyal Valley continue to be threatened by the shadowy figure known as Number 7, along with raiding Apaches and hired killers. Entertaining Western, look forward to book 3.

Read The Puppet Masters by Robert Heinlein, where slug-like aliens have invaded Earth and US govt agents fight to root them out. Enjoyed the story though found the first-person perspective wearying after awhile. Oddly doesn't bother me when Chandler does it with Marlow.

Read Shakespeare's King Henry IV Part I, another tremendous history play that introduces the figure of Falstaff. Actually the Oxford version they reverted to the name Oldcastle, which Shakespeare was apparently forced to change by his powerful living relatives, so some of the puns work better now. Get a showdown between the wayward Prince Hal and the warrior Hotspur, who leads the rebellion against Henry IV, but it's not over, so there is a Part 2.

Read Death In The Afternoon, a non-fiction book by Hemingway where he expresses his love of bull-fighting. Holy cow he knows a lot about it (as of 1932). Sometimes he loses me with the level of detail (bulls have a favorite horn to gore with?) but his discussions of Matadors, their styles of fighting bulls, the injuries they receive, how they learn the trade, on and on it's really gripping stuff.

25 So I started "God or Nothing" by Cardinal Robert Sarah. So far, so good. Interesting that everyone in his area in Guinea thought only white people could be priests, based on their experience, so Cardinal Sarah's being invited to attend the minor seminary was quite shocking. I have a feeling I'm going to like him quite a lot. He does seem to have kicked up a dust storm over ad orientem masses so that's interesting even though I don't get real excited on that subject.

And I started reading "Gone to Sea in a Bucket," a recommendation from last week. So far, so good, but I feel sure things are going to go tits up very, very soon.

"Hollywood Babylon" is going much more quickly now that I am mostly just looking at the pictures and skimming. Such careless, stupid people.

And I forgot about the Jonathan Kellerman book I was reading so it spent an entire week stuffed under a pillow. That should tell you my level of excitement.

main character is named Krabat and the title has been changed to Krabat, Krabat and the Mill, others.

the author is Otfried Preussler and there's also a movie or two.

If you're reading Ringworld and then Ringworld Engineers, I would also advise you first read "Protector" by Larry Niven.

35 Good morning fellow Book Threadists. Too much lousy and disappointing crap in the news lately. I'm re-reading the Lumby series by Gail Fraser. These are similar to the Mitford books but I like them better. They are about a small town in the Pacific northwest full of odd characters. The books are pleasant (sometimes I need pleasant), funny and occasionally hilarious, with rather touching moments. My blood pressure drops ten points while reading them.

38 I've just begun reading Summoned by Iddo Tavory. It's about the Jewish Orthodox community in Hollywood / West Los Angeles and how it survives - thrives - surrounded by a totally alien contemporary LA.

A bit heavy on the sociobabble (the author is a sociologist at UCLA) but an enjoyable read about the neighborhood where I grew up. Some Orthodox kids were my childhood friends. 43 Finished reading Larry Correia's Monster Hunters International, books 1 and 2.

Fun reading, but starting to fall into a pattern of pulling out some kind of BS trick to solve a problem.

Probably not going to read anymore of the series, but the first book is definitely a fun read.

But it does put you in the frame of mind that some people in the world are really monsters in the way that they think and act. I think that Correia is messing with us. Well, he was messing with me, at least.

If you like post-apocalyptic/zombie fiction, this book is fantastic. Well drawn and disparate characters with multiple converging story lines, good dialogue, well done action scenes. The book has it all. You should definitely check it out.

45 I finished The Bridgebusters this week about the Catch-22 bomb wing and I am rereading Catch-22. My appreciation for Catch-22 may be enhanced but not necessarily my enjoyment. The reality behind the jokes is very poignant. In one famous scene, Yossarian, sent to bomb a small village of no strategic or industrial industrial importance, decides to bomb early thereby saving the lives of innocent Italian civilians. Rather than to discipline him, the army awarded him a medal to avoid notoriety regarding bombing an innocent village and an officer's willful disobedience of orders. In reality, Catch-22 author Joseph Heller was ordered to bomb the innocent village of Pont San Martin. Not Heller, but a pilot purposefully dropped his bombs long avoiding the village excusing himself as evading non-existent Flak. Although not award a medal, his willful disobedience was ignored. The rest of the group did bomb the village hitting an elementary school killing forty kids. The village had no industrial or strategic value. The Allies had invaded southern France and were afraid two German armoured divisions might use the road through town to hit them in the flank. They therefore used a technique known as "panicking" which consisted of bombing villages for the purpose of slowing transportation by filling the streets with rubble. It sounds vicious but troops really were getting killed in France and more would have been if that armor had gotten through.

This mission seems to have deeply affected Heller. Although he, another officer, and three enlisted men had so vociferously protested the ever increasing number of missions designated a tour, before this mission he flew about every other day. After this mission he flew about once a week and they were milk runs. In Catch-22, Yossarian rejects an offer to fly only milk runs in exchange for not protesting the number of missions as being unfair to the other men. Did Heller accept such an offer? In Catch-22, Yossarian accepts an offer (before rejecting it) to act as a PR stooge in lieu of flying more missions. Heller was an actor in a publicity training film rather than flying missions. After the PR film was done, Heller was sent back to the States having flown only 60 of the then required 70 missions.

In addition to the Catch-22 connection discussed above, this is a good, gritty book filled with good, gritty war stories. There's a tad too much detail about the ground war for my taste in a book about a bomber wing but YMMV.

I'm on vacation this week, so I'm loading up on what sound like fun books to read. I found a good deal on Larry Correia's Monster Hunter books, so I bought volumes 2 through 5. I read the first one last year and loved it.

I've also added the book "Cannibal Gold" by Chuck Dixon to my stack. Dixon wrote the Batman comics for DC in the 1990s and 2000s, and is an unashamed conservative.
The book is about a quartet of former Army Rangers called in to save a team of scientists stuck 10,000 years in the past. It sounds like a fun vacation read.

52 38 I've just begun reading Summoned by Iddo Tavory. It's about the Jewish Orthodox community in Hollywood / West Los Angeles and how it survives - thrives - surrounded by a totally alien contemporary LA.

A bit heavy on the sociobabble (the author is a sociologist at UCLA) but an enjoyable read about the neighborhood where I grew up. Some Orthodox kids were my childhood friends. And for us Christians, I'm hoping to find some survival strategies we might wish to copy as our situation becomes similar.

In the early 90s, I would drive on Beverly on my way to WLA. It was like driving thru 1930s Poland. Obviously, no worse than Brooklyn but it was amusing to me.

Around that time there was a brouhaha over a cafe that had some nude art hanging on the walls that the orthodox community objected to. Finally, they just moved the art to the back of the cafe where it couldnt be seen. I'm sure little orthodox boy's hearts were broken.

It demonstrates nicely that the police are human, and in big cities they see on a daily basis some of the worst humanity has to offer--child abuse, murder, sexual assault, drug-induced depravity. Just finished The Waking Fire by Anthony Ryan, the first book of a new fantasy series. I was hesitant--he wrote a trilogy that was ultimately disappointing. The first book, Blood Song, was amazing. The second one was pretty good. The third one was unfortunate in that it threw away all the promise of the beginning. Anyway, this new one was pretty good.

59 I had a book event yesterday - an indy-author event with about forty other writers, but actual shoppers for books were thin on the ground. (This event is only on it's second year, so word hasn't gotten out, in spite of heroic publicity efforts on the part of the organizer)

No loss, except of my time - and I was able to finish John Biggins' The Two Headed Eagle - an Otto Prohaska adventure, wherein the hero takes a break from submarine duty as an aerial observer in the Austrian military's flying corps ... on the Italian front. Very well written, and detailed, with a fair amount of wry and dark humor; such as when our hero remarks to the effect that night precision bombing from an aircraft meant being able to hit the right country.

The interesting (yet disheartening) subtext of the Prohaska books is an explanation of how the Austro-Hungarian empire fell apart; ethnic and nationalist divisions, bureaucratic sclerosis, and decades of mismanagement.

61 Fwiw, I don't agree with the Benedict Option, the idea of Christians forming enclosed communities.

Unlike jews, Christians are a converting religion, the invitation being to leave behind the tribe to which one previously belongs and to adopt a new way of being.

The emulation then ought not to be Benedict and withdrawal but of the great missionaries, such as Patrick etc. To consecrate the modern equivalent of the pagan shrines, subvert the equivalent of pagan holidays, and bring multitudes to the light. That would take an aggressive stance that I think no Christian Church is capable of currently though. At least not any Western one.

Frankly, we get better and more timely information from the threads here. Even if there are protests, I saw enough of them in 1968. I regard this as more time for reading.

I'm putting together a list of reading during the conventions. So far I've got the current and some older issues of Backwoodsman magazine, the essays of Montaigne and my leather bound copy of the John Carter of Mars books.

Anyone else taking this approach?

The Kennedys are a scourge on this country. I read the Kennedys by Peter Collier and David Horowitz decades ago when I was still a fan. We were taught that Rose Kennedy was the best mother ever. In the book they talked about her going to Paris for the fashion shows 14 times in 2 years without the kids. This was back when ocean travel took a week. So when was she home? Then there were the Kennedy kids pan handling and hanging out and doing drugs with an older family friend who was gay. I was living in NYC when David was mugged in a shooting gallery and called the cops to report his wallet stolen. lol He was admitted to a hospital where my friend worked as a nurse and she said he was a real asshole. In his defense, he was probably detoxing or maybe not. His doctors probably gave him drugs or his brothers brought it in for him.

Even John Jr was a phony. I read The Dark Side of Camelot by Seymour M. Hersh. Jackie ran interference for her kid all her life. He was constantly getting favoritism at school and even while taking the bar exam. He got hired as a DA at Cape Cod which he wd never had gotten but for the fact he was a Kennedy.

And then there is Skakel. I assume he is out on bail waiting for his new trial for murdering that girl.

The one place I missed when I visited Paris a few years ago. In a related historical tidbit, the grave of Thaddeus Kosciuszko, hero of the American Revolution & Poland, is filled with the earth of all the battlefields in which he fought.

89 Great thumping of the BLM bullshit, Mr. Muse. I too am a fan of Heather MacDonald's stuff, though I haven't read her books. I don't agree with her 100%, but most times I don't agree with me 100%.

I'm about 3/4 through Friday by the esteemed RAH. Written in 1982, he seems to have soured on group marriages a bit, as promulgated in Stranger In A Strange Land (1961).

It's about a female artificial person, aka a selected gene construct. The US is kaput and there are no shining cities on the hills. Not his best work imho, but it was nominated for all the usual awards.

2.5 to 3 stars.

Christianity didn't have the cohesion at the time it converted pagan lands. Sure it had a strong papacy and it's backing but in those lands it did not.

What those lands had that we no longer do is a monarchy that could be converted and could order the land to follow suit.

I suppose the early American missionaries are another model more suitable.

Regardless, I agree it won't come from Western churches. You might see it emerging from the African ones.

97 Reading "Japanese Lover" by Allende and "Clever Girl" about a 1930s American woman who was a bigtime Soviet Spy back in the day. I'm meh on both of them unless they improve and grab me.

Tore through "The Girls" on vacation and that was incredibly creepy. The narrator has a spooky, amoral perspective on 1960s California, and a Manson-like cult she gets involved with. I liked how it focused on the totally fucked up way teenage girls and women deal with each other. As a female, I recognize this, women have no right to claim any moral high ground vs. men in any respect, both can be equally awful and without conscience.

I never knew that the first battles of the Civil War were fought in the early 1830s. That was eye-opening given our current situation. It was also interesting how De Tocqueville posited (correctly) that China was run by a bureaucracy because it was clear that the goal of those in charge was that nothing ever change, which is also important in current circumstances (as well as a good reminder of just how closed China really was at the time. He *had* to guess because no one knew for sure).

The MHI books do feel formulaic, but I think that is because Correia tends to take common monster movie tropes, sticks his fist down their throats and yanks them inside out.
He also knows his guns. So I get to chant "we're not worthy" at him like a proper fanboy.

To unpack a bit: there is a current within the left American society in general to use the term war applied in circumstances that aren't wars, like the war on poverty or drugs.

It mobilizes those who adhere to the aims, naturally, but it's also a kind of attitude that they have, that everything must be addressed by this moral equivalent of war. My view is that an equivalent is not a war.

So what I'm asking is, on the right we seem to find the equivalent of civil war everywhere now. Is that right?

Thank goodness I write in Scrivener and that nifty software keeps on the local hard drive multiple compressed back-ups of projects. Alas losing a day of writing, means I need to crank out about 3,000 words today to get back on track to finish 50,000 words by end of month. Challenges are always fun right?

I have that book on my stack. Sorry to hear that it's "meh." I read a few pages of it and it looks to me like the author is not so much interested in what Bentley did for her country but her psychological state of mind and her inner struggles.

145 Finished Influence - The Psychology of Persuasion, one of the books from Scott Adams' Persuasion Reading List.

Very worthwhile book. I think it has changed my perceptions. I expected to learn about a bunch of hidden techniques by which persuasion jerks on our hidden chains. Instead it turned out that all of the techniques discussed fall into the "so obvious you've never really thought much about it" category. It is very eye-opening to start really being aware of how automatic some of our social responses are, and how those responses can be manipulated.

Robert B. Cialdini, the author, implies that he became interested in the topic in part because he noticed that he falls easily for all of these things, and therefore required extra understanding to fend them off. So as a kind of bonus at the end of each chapter describing a human behavior principle that can be manipulated, he talks about how to recognize that it is happening to you, and how to resist.

Interestingly, he has a pretty good argument that the Watergate breakin came about precisely because of Liddy's use of one of these persuasion techniques. Not provable, of course, but interesting.

You can edit them all in one place, too! I have found an app that allows you to upload all notes to word processor, but because you have to pay for it, I'm still searching for a good way to do that.

I'm reading Sir Walter Scott's "The Talisman," and it's surprisingly good. I am not a reader of Scott, having slogged through "Ivanhoe" a few years ago and just didn't enjoy it at all. Talisman is a Crusades book, with a Romantic view of the Saracens.

It's strange, in our day, to read lines like this, written perfectly straight: "'The word of a follower of the Prophet was never broken,' answered the Emir." Scott was not familiar with taqiyya, I think. For us today, it's almost axiomatic that when a follower of Muhammad says, "Peace, peace," he is secretly plotting, or at least wishing for, war and death upon the unbelievers.

Anyway, Scott was venerated for good reason in his era, because his storytelling is so compelling.

AND DID YOU KNOW that Richard Lion-heart determined to be absolutely terrifying to the Muslim Saracens? Richard (apparently) captured a bunch of the enemies, then held a banquet for Saladin's ambassadors. His servants brought out the cooked heads of Saladin's noblemen, and proceeded to eat one of the heads in front of them. Richard told them that it was okay with him if Saladin cut off the Crusaders' supply lines, because his men could just eat any Saracens they caught, and one plump enemy could feed a good half-dozen of his knights for a day or so.

Quite a way to send a message. In this way, Richard sent the Mussulmen the same message that Vlad the Impaler sent, when he brutally killed the Islamic invaders of Hungary fitted by creating a forest of the enemies impaled on spikes. "Don't mess with us."

Richard ended up getting pretty good press, and Vlad ended up being the prototype for Dracula. Both were cruel psychos, but they both also helped stem the tide of Islam in their day.

Now, I'm not for honor killing, and murder is way too far, but it does change the picture somewhat to think of her as a Kardashian. How shameful and awful would it be to have that family connected to your name, particularly in that culture? Who here hasn't wished they'd just disappear, and we're not even related?

So I think that's kind of playing into it some, too, more than just the concept of killing someone in the name of family honor.

183 Strangely, I just read Little Men by Louisa May Alcott this past week and am starting on Little Women.

Got the trilogy for my Kindle for a few bucks. I read it as a kid and enjoyed it then, and I'm an avid re-reader.

Probably too mushy and quaint for many, if not most. But the past couple of hellish weeks have made me really wonder, "Are we really going to make it out of this OK?" I found it a kind of comforting, brief sojourn into a quiet, gentle world where virtues such as honesty, service to others, unselfishness, courage, etc. weren't punchlines or micro-aggressions.

I honestly do not see much of an improvement.

The thing about going: "this was evil, but" is that the "But" adds legitimacy to the actor. With one hand you are saying that this was evil and contemptible, and with the other saying that you can see how the person got there.

It is the same with Dem politicians condemning violence against Police, but then saying that there is righteous anger being directed at them. The second has a tendency to make the first window dressing for people who wish to do the thing. It is useless as a societal pressure statement.

I can understand what you are saying from an analytical statement. I think analysis can be useful for figuring out how the enemy thinks. But make no mistake that they are the enemy and are evil.

211 One L'Amour book I didn't much care for is one of his last: The Walking Drum. Its not a bad story, with lots of interesting historical bits, but it has a major flaw.

Like a lot of people, L'Amour became enamored with a romantic view of Islamic Spain (al'Andalus) and portrays the Muslims as decent, honorable people who have a superior culture to the rest of Europe with vastly advanced medicine, science, literature, mathematics, etc.

The reality was, it was brutal and awful for non-Muslims, and their highest achievements were echoed in other European nations (or predated by centuries in Greece), and by non-Muslims living in the area.

It is full of first account narratives from the fall of the USSR. It is not a light read. My Soviet history is lacking. Thankfully, he author includes many notes to help with timelines and unfamiliar terminology and names.

This book is helping me understand the mindset of the people of Russia. Very interesting.

Great book. Near the beginning is a fantastic rebuttal to lefty racial bullshit. The GRU agent tries to ingratiate himself to Major Joe Mack (Sioux, by birth, USAF test pilot by choice) pointing out that the US was stolen from his people. Mack just replies that his ancestors had stolen it from other tribes beforehand, and that regardless of who's in charge, it's still his country.

Oh, and it also has a great badass ending "This was once a custom of my people......"

Had hoped when I got my Kindle that this crap of publisher set prices would eventually go away and I would be able to grab whole collections such as L'Amour, Spenser novels, Lucas Davenport novels, etc. at a reasonable price. Then donate some of the shelves and boxes of books hanging around.

Meh. The human being is a rational animal, not merely an animal, and as such is responsible for making sure that his beliefs are warranted and consistent. How many of us (myself included) were fed liberal bullshit up through high school, and believed it, but eventually gave it up because there were too many inconsistencies?

These inner city kids, apart from the gang wars, have a much better life and opportunities than, say, the average medieval peasant. And if those peasants were for the most part orderly and law abiding, there is no excuse for the inner cities as they are today.

Some of these are 25+ years old! I had figured by now the Kindle prices would be say, a buck or so. I figured I could get the whole set for maybe $50ish or certainly less than $100. Current prices are ridiculous. Simply don't have the shelf space for hundreds of books, particularly hardcover.

At $8.00 per, I cannot imagine they could sell more than a few a year. But there could be hundreds of fans who would pay a buck or so for the convenience. I guess they would rather piss people off.

You're right on the visual and visceral appeal, of course. But Gen. LeMay vetoed the tandem layout of the XB-52, for what we have today.

Pilot workload, teamwork and coordination are far better in the conventional cockpit, alas.

But I'm sure a more B-1-ish interface of aluminum and plexi could be drawn into the lines, vs the B-52's Greyhound Bus looking visage.

And modern manufacturing for the new wings, I think they'd whip the spar cracking and such, that resulted from the "over the shoulder" nuke delivery manuvers?

There's been so much development of better airfoils since then, too. The efficiency and strength of a modern wing and engines would be most impressive on a B-47, I think.

There is a branch of Univ of Nebraska - Kearney up there--there was a BLM march of about 20 people heading for the main drag with a rainbow flag at the head, so maybe it was LGBTBLM.

It got interesting when they came to the main drag with the Confederate flags flying off the back of pickups.

It's the same building I've been going to for a quarter century. Our previous bad apple who left two years ago took the Missouri Synod reference out of the sign to the street in order to 'be more inviting' and nobody had noticed until he went off the rails. The new guy is 'nice' and coasting into retirement and thus has most of the conservative wing of the congregation lulled into a stupor.

And despite being a glorified temp, he seems to think he needs to push sweeping changes to our by-laws in order to 'modernize' us. He's the sort who writes off anything inconvenient to his goals in the Bible as cultural bias and at least my perception is that most everyone's eating that shit up, and the few folks I talk to who see it for what it is just feel too overwhelmed by the entire society's slide into the abyss to offer resistance on Sunday mornings.

It's dispiriting.

Terhune was big on collies as best I remember. I had 3 from age 3-17, so maybe that's why I remember them so fondly. Big emphasis on loyalty, heart, steadfastness on the part of the dog, obviously from a time long past.

358 Sorry for the people who didn't have a good Sunday morning or don't feel like going to church because of conflict. I wasn't at the little churches I serve communion or sometimes conduct worship or preach at at. Instead I got up at 4;15 and travelled and then I prayed along with the pastor of the church I just served as interim along with kids and adults going to West Virginia to help rehabilitate homes for "Appalachian Service Project." Then I spent a lot of time listening and praying with people who have various troubles and stand in the need of prayer.

Then I went to the Orthodox Church where I listened to a great sermon on the healing of the centurion's servant-,given by a priest who spend 30 years "under authority" in the military. First time I've heard that passage preached on by a man who had been supervising chaplains in the military.

Sometimes it's just nice to sit and listen and pray and not have to do anything. I can't take the Eucharist because I am not Orthodox, however.

I'm on the fifth "Green Field's" book by Adrienne Lecter. A good twist on a post-apocalyptic zombie novel. The author has a background in science so that makes it interesting.

I also read all three Amy Lynn books by Jack July, fellow moron. I throughly enjoyed them. I wish he'd do a book about Uncle Jack and another on Bogus.

I recommend creating an account and adding your book(s) and locations in them if possible. I threw some on there for Life Unworthy. The interface is a bit awkward and for some reason its location map defaults to Copenhagen no matter what you tell it to search for, so you have to zoom out and find places manually.

I have a "first sentence" rule when picking up any book. If the first sentence doesn't grab me and make me want to continue, down it goes.

So, on the recommendation of the local Sunday rag, I checked out "The Passenger" by Lisa Lutz. Try this for an opener:

When I found my husband at the bottom of the stairs, I tried to resuscitate him before I ever considered disposing of the body.

Don't know about you, but that grabbed me. I'm only halfway through, but so far, so good.

Harlan Coben used to KILL with some of his, and he may still have the best one ever from "Tell No One."

One of my peeves: you can get all Shakespeare works on ebook for free but I paid about $13 for the Oxford version. You get a nice intro but the works have so many errors it's ridiculous, they must've saved $$$ not editing them. My hardcover book is great, no obvious errors.

I was born in Fayette County in southwestern PA. For one of their centennial celebrations they put up wooden cutouts of Lafayette, dressed in full uniform, around certain parts of the country.

Gotta pay for my thrills of having vacation over the last couple of weeks.

Anywho...

I read "The Vendor of Sweets" by R K Narayan while traveling.

"Vendor of Sweets" is listed by Anthony Burgess as one of the 99 great novels of the 20th Century.

Actually, Burgess gives VoS it's position as an overall award to Narayan's Novels of Malgudi. A series of novels set in a small South Indian village.

VoS would fall into the category of gentle human comedy. Not much action, lots of talking and yet by the end of the novel, the main characters have changed profoundly.

Narayan writing is pristine and precise. The novel is very short. The comedy is mostly of the "smile" variety. An interesting view of South Indian society can be gleaned from the various characters interactions.

The story, which was written in the 50s-60s, seems rather relevant to today's world as the Vendor runs a successful business but has a son who could stand in for a modern day pajama boy.

The son rejects the Vendor's world and quits college to become a writer. Of course, he's a writer who never writes anything and as the story progresses engages in evermore frivolous schemes to prove how special he is.

The Vendor, who casts every action of the son in the best light, spoils him dreadfully...until he doesn't.

The breaking point is his son asking for roughly $50K to manufacture a "story writing machine".

The Vendor who styles himself as a follower of Gandhi and Hinduism and thus not so concerned with worldly goods finds that he, in fact, is very concerned about that huge sum of worldly goods. And he begins to contrast his son's flounderings to his own experiences as a follower of Gandhi fighting for independence.

If this sounds like heavy going, it's not. Narayan has a light humorous touch and brings things to a surprising and somewhat mixed conclusion.

Honestly, I don't know if I'd recommend this book to the modern reader. There's very little action and the story takes place in the broad grey smear of human interaction and the human heart. Because it is a comedy of the mildest sort, it's fun reading. But, low key fun.

Glenn Beck recently recounted a convo he had with a couple BLM marchers (!) and a black woman who is a "prayer warrior." They were all anti-Obama. In a big way.

Beck was stunned to hear them say the election wouldn't matter because it's "common knowledge" in the black community that Zero is not going anywhere and will declare martial law if he has to.

394 [38] I've just begun reading Summoned by Iddo Tavory. It's about the Jewish Orthodox community in Hollywood / West Los Angeles and how it survives - thrives - surrounded by a totally alien contemporary LA.

A bit heavy on the sociobabble (the author is a sociologist at UCLA) but an enjoyable read about the neighborhood where I grew up. Some Orthodox kids were my childhood friends. And for us Christians, I'm hoping to find some survival strategies we might wish to copy as our situation becomes similar.
