Reason number 77,426 why one should never listen to a celebrity. This Hollywood hypocrite shows he was Bourne stupid.

Paying For Terror

Palestinian Authority pays terrorists and their families $140 million a year. I'd cut it all.

While U.S. law allows the government to cut aid to the Palestinian Authority for paying terrorists and their families, the Palestinian Authority has avoided this by transferring the payments to the Palestinian Liberation Organization, experts said Wednesday.

"The U.S. stipulations have been evaded by the PA by this deceitful technique of funneling money to terrorists and their families under a different name," said David Pollock, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

News Bloopers

Modular Plane

I don't know about this. Modular plane concept treats passenger cabin like a shipping container. I'd hate to have the pilot accidentally activate the jettison switch or something.

Surprise, Surprise

German Intelligence: Iran seeking nukes. Only a surprise to people with a functioning brain. If only ESPN carried this type of news. Then just maybe Obama would see it.

Deep Fried Nachos

Poison Ivy

Hmmmm. A retired scientist explains the trick to never getting a poison ivy rash again. This would not have helped me the last time I got poison ivy as it entered my system through cuts I got on my arms as I was doing yardwork. That was probably one of the worst experiences of my life.

College Waste

If you like salt and pepper you hate gays, says food critic who teaches students safe sex. I can't believe colleges pay for this crap. Oh wait, yes I can. They're largely run by the left.

Dumb Criminal

Man steals cell phone, gives phone to cops when cornered, then jumps into the water at a marina and drowns. I guess he forgot that he couldn't swim.

Two say they were teenagers at the time, with one saying that, as a former model or something, 16 at the time, Roger pulled out what I guess we can call "Little Roger" on her and told her to get on her knees. This was in '67, and the woman is in her sixties now.

I find myself agreeing with Steven den Beste that this is the beginning of the end for the Olympic games being what they once were.

The cost is too high and the host governments are largely ran by incompetent retard collectivists who could not manage a litter removal day let alone the creation of a city within a city.

Shit on an Olympic scale requires massive competence and if there is one thing the international left has established this last decade is it lacks it in spades.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 09, 2016 10:21 PM (GSdpU)

Just the one guy as far as I have seen. The others were arrested for acting suspiciously. There was a scare today at the memorial when someone reported a masked guy at a parking garage near the memorial going on. They searched the garage but did not find the reported guy.

107 AOP, yeah, one shooter. Guys in Merc were just picking up from Greyhound.

Not sure on the other 2 men and one woman that was said to not be cooporating tho.

They also had a "Masked man in PD Garage" scare today, but thats all clear now and no man found..

My nephew and his wife have a pretty funny cat. A sister in law always gives us a tree ornament at Christmas time and last Christmas she gave us all bird ornaments. Very lifelike, with gray feathers. Well, Ramona the kitteh went bat shit crazy over this ornament. She batted if off the tree and carried it off to her little kitty bed and cuddled with her paws around it. Nobody could get near "her bird" she acted like it was a real bird she had killed and this was her trophy. She carried it around every where she went. when I was over there a few weeks ago, I saw the bird ornament is still in her bed, and she is still, after all these months, all "it's MY bird, ALL MINE! Do not touch MY Bird!!!" about it.

LOL, Ramona the mighty huntress.

I worked for Long John Silver's in my teens. The top secret batter came in one portion size brown bags that you poured into a bowl and then used a water dispenser that poured out the exact amount of water at the right temperature. From there you had to use the batter within so much time. I can still tell when they are using old batter.

I get the sense that there's more than one that is really jealous of Kimberly. She's a fun gal, likes to cut up, and likes to show off what she's got. That pisses a lot of them off.

Old Roger, I can't believe it. Young Roger, I don't know. One of the other women, says back in the '70s, he told her if you want to make it you NYC, you've got to make it with Roger. And make it with whoever else Roger tells you to.

And, it's turning out, with just about all the nutrition advice of the last 30-40 years being utter crap, bassackwards, that beef tallow is probably the healthiest thing to deep fry in there is, well one of them. Saturated animal fat is probably the best. Unsaturated oil, especially polyunsaturated, we never evolved to eat them in the quantities we do now, thanks to processing. They were in our diet, but not in very concentrated quantities, coming from plant sources.

Turns out that heating unsaturated fat oils up to high temperature produces far more oxidatitive shit, carcinogenic than saturated by a long shot, too.

Pretty much any international event is about graft and bribery. Even major chess events are about graft and bribery. At one time the USCF representative to FIDE was a dual citizen of the US and Chile. She even ran the USCF for awhile when it was a financial wreck and did a good job. But she was absolutely baffled by US members demands for transparency and honesty in FIDE dealings. She was used to South American graft and behind the scenes manipulation.

190 Right, age of the oil, atmospheric pressure, and condition of the cooked medium are all big factors....

I'd trust a good fry cook more than the guy who wakes up at 11 am checks one of three boxes on ten sheets of paper and then conspires to fuck up America with his mouth the rest of the day.

The fry cook produces something.
Posted by: sven10077 at July 09, 2016 10:38 PM (SzZnW)

You know the fries that really suck? When they give you the fries cooked in the fish fryer because they were changing the oil in the fry fryer. I assume it happens more often these days since a lot of them are 24 hour operations.

196 See I am exactly the opposite. I prefer the "slightly lower than metered time" fry. Golden brown and crispy without being limp.

I can usually tell when they have gone too long and not changed the oil on schedule. That usually gives a darker, dryer fry.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at July 09, 2016 10:35 PM (3ZoRf)

Agreed. Thick-cut fries, golden on the outside with a crispy skin, but a texture like a baked potato on the inside. Preferably hand-cut with some tater-hide still lingering.

Five Guys make good fries, IMHO. Also, and actually better, a local Alberta chain called Chicken On The Way.

230 Yeah, they got sued. The way I understand it, they switched from beef tallow to vegetable oil in the 90s. But they were still using some beef flavoring added to the frozen fries, and that's what the vegetarian and religious groups sued over. Said they were misled to think there was no beef or animal products still in them, but there was.

Beef tallow was part of the flavoring, still, I think.

In the old days, the fat they fried in was 90%+ beef tallow, with a little of something else in it, so they were still trying to keep the tallow flavor in.

267 Follow-up post in regard to this earlier post on the Pet Thread:
---------------

... we have had a woman, paddling a stand-up paddle board at the lake two blocks away, attacked by a rabid beaver. She's hospitalized and not in great shape apparently.

I did a search, and found that similar attacks are not too unusual. Just a word of warning.
---------------

Okay. We closed the lake property to visitors. Remarkably, we actually had to argue with some would-be visitors to shoo them away.

Animal control came out looked around for a while and told us to call if anyone spied the animal, left.

My suggestion of placing a bounty and opening the lake to all comers didn't gain any traction. Too bad, as I had Jaws-like visions of boats overloaded with yuts, yahoos, and rednecks throwing sticks of dynamite.

The Warden with jurisdiction came around. He's a friend, and in fact I was the one that hired him some fifteen years ago. I've been out to his farm for some shooting before.

There is a path that wends around the lake and is just wide enough to accommodate a pick-up truck if necessary. The warden was slowly cruising this watching the lake when he looked back and found that the beaver was swimming along parallel and following the truck. [queue the Jaws theme here].

He stopped the truck, got out, and the beaver immediately turned toward him swimming for the bank.

Did I mention that he is a good shot? He deliberately waited until the beaver was just three feet or so from the bank, fired two shots, calculated to miss the head. Got the beaver with both shots, midsection.

No word on the ladies condition, but the beaver ripped her up pretty well, and, there is the rabies thing. Teeth like honed chisels if you've never seen them.

Ah. Details. Morons always want details. Okay:

276 I stumbled across the newer "insulin index" of foods, which is the area under the curve of the blood insulin level produced by eating a given caloric quantity of given food, with the scale set at white bread = 100.

Fries are pretty high, but not as high as other potato stuff. Baked Russet Potatoes are the worst, with a score of 121, same as some candy bars. Boiled potatoes come in around 88, high 80s say, while french fries score a 74.

The insulin index is likely a better measure of how bad a given food is compared to the glycemic index. Two foods can have the same damn GI, but have different insulin indices. That's just the complexity of human metabolic biochemistry.

They built a monster I remember seeing at that shop. Some buddies of mine gawked at it. This was in the early '80s.

Anyway, it was crazy. There were twin Ford 460s on the back of that. Supercharged, with *twin* Holley 4-bbls on top of each of the superchargers. All chromed up. Headers coming out of each cyl. aimed up high.

And all that on a damn boat. I remember it has gas pedal, which was chrome and in the shape of a bare human foot with all the toes.

I forget just what the hell the actual drive was, but it had two of them, hooked right up to each of the 460s.

At in-n-Out you can get a custom batch of fries made to your preferred level of doneness, from nearly raw to burnt to a crisp. You can also get them "animal style" (covered with cheese, grilled onions, and sauce).

McDonald's used to be good before they went vegetarian on the fires; Burger King as well.

it's a cult. for an expensive burger, i'll go to The Counter, who will sell you a rare burger, or, for regular fast food, there's Original Tommy's and In-n-Out, both of whom will sell me moar food than i can eat for less than what a bare minimum meal costs at VG's.

406 Raining pretty steady here right now. My rainwater cistern is full, and the float switch has kicked on the little sump pump to pump it down, so there's a big jet of water coming from the garden hose stretched out on the lawn. Better that than the cistern over-fills, and starts weeping water into the basement.

Knowing it was going to rain, I fired up the riding mower, and did a large patch this afternoon. Just as i was going to put it away, it quit dead. Still fuel in the tank. Let it sit a while, and did some other chores, when I went back to it, it started fine, and ran about a hundred feet, and quit dead again. Seems to have a blockage in the fuel line. Leaving it sit a while lets enough fuel past the blockage to fill the carburetor, and it will run on that for half a minute.

Anyway, got it in the barn, by dint of pushing it the last dozen feet.

459 Remember that old Ray Stevens song about the Mississippi squirrel revival. A lot people were moved by the spirit.

Then there was that summer my father and I were out in our shop and heard a scream. Long story, but my father had put in a lot down and across the street for a trailer, this newlywed couple wore him down and put a trailer there. After a few years they built a house, but rent out that stupid trailer.

She was over there cleaning it out for the next tenant and was using the commode. A black snake stuck it's head up between her legs. It had crawled in and was hiding, curled up around the bowl underneath the seat.

She was hysterical. It was so damned funny, but she wasn't in the mood at all to laugh about it, although she did later. Dad and I found the snake. It had crawled out into a closet by then. She said kill it. We didn't, but told her we did. Black snakes are good people.

475 Speaking of my grandmothers, my maternal grandmother was one tough old broad. She had been through the Depression and a lot of rough times.

It was in the 50s one time, and they had moved into town, on the outskirts. She was a nurse, but I think she wasn't working at the time. Her husband had long died. A neighbor of hers was a young woman in her twenties with about three children. One was a little toddler, and one day, the little kid managed to get burned badly. It was something about a stove.

The woman was young and inexperienced. My grandmother heard the screaming and went over there. The woman, now and old lady, told me about that a few years ago. I didn't know it.

Anyway, my grandmother knew how to make some sort of burn salve. She asked if the girl had some tea. She didn't. The salve needed tea. She said my grandmother, knowing they couldn't find it, just hiked up her skirt and sprinted back to her house, then sprinted back, with the tea and some other ingredients for the salve, and ordered the young woman to do something to get it ready.

She got it and started applying to the little toddler, a little girl. The girl started screaming, it hurt like hell, I'm sure. The young woman lost it, going crazy trying to stop my grandmother from "hurting" her little girl.

My grandmother just hauled off and slapped the shit out of her, telling her to get herself together, this ain't no time to be fooling around, your baby will likely die if we don't treat it.

When they got it to the doctor (you didn't call 911 in those days, and getting a doctor out would take a long time), he told the girl that my grandmother saved that little girl's life.

She remembered that after all those years and was grateful to my grandmother and all her children and grandchildren over the years because of it.

476 Don't tell me a boat is more hassle than a house. I've got a 22 oz. Estwig framing hammer you need to be beat with if you think that's actually true.

I've just had to remove and replace about 40 some ft. of improperly installed 2 in. I.D. pvc drain under the house.

Hurricane Ike put three inches of water into the house, but I've completed those repairs long ago, or so I thought.

Turns out, the idiots whut built the place, used non-galvanized nails out on the front and rear porches and railings.

I've got those to tear out and replace with new.

The house is 100% Hardi-Plank exterior.

Now, I've got to cut-out all of the failed acrylic-latex caulking at the trim~siding~window joints, replace it with quality polyurethane, and then paint the whole damn place.

After, that is, grinding down the rust stains in the trim, hitting the offending bits with 2 to 3 coats of Kilz, and let's not forget to pressure wash before painting, too.

I've already paid thousands to replace the HVAC system, which was cheap, builder's grade crap.

Water valve in the fridge's ice maker is kaput, so that's on order now.

And I just have recently (I hope) fought a protacted war on termites, and repairing all the cosmetic damage required to get at the little SOBs.

Taking care of a boat is a bargain compared to this.

Here's a look at the smaller version of what's in my plans: Irwin 38 Mk II. http://tinyurl.com/jmlrcpl

But, when I'm in the "ready to buy" mode, I'll be looking for it's bigger brother, either the 44 ft. or 46 ft., and if fortune smiles, perhaps even the 52 ft.

Similar, competing designs of course, are to be considered, but this is the template. I don't need a high-strung, ocean going thoroughbred. Just a good, strong, safe boat, that loves the blue water and high seas.

Being a former liveaboard of seven years logged, I can vouch for the virtues of life on the water.

And I'm very much looking forward to returning to that station in life, too.

477 long ago, i had a real douche bag of a CO: he went AWOL during our AT, conveniently missing our 72 hour ARTEP, with *almost* everyone covering for him... (somehow the BC and CSM found out he'd gone back to Lost Angels %-)

when he got back, he handed me a stack of fresh from the laundry BDUs, in plastic, with instructions that i was to bring him a fresh one every morning chow run.

i told him we weren't in the British Army, and that he didn't have a batman, but he made it a direct order, with witnesses.

like a good little EM, i brought him a fresh uniform every day, as ordered.

as i understand it, when he resigned his commission the next month, he still had poison oak in his pits, crotch, ass cheeks, etc...

483 The Modular Plane concept is stupid. If these were my students, I would fail them. The drag would be out of this world. Look at all the places where wind swept surfaces are next to each other. It probably would rank among the Top 5 Interference Drag Concepts ever. So, speed would suck, range would suck.

Also, structurally, there are many unnecessary duplicate structures along the length, plus the load carrying fuselage is shallow, so would be heavy to carry the bending loads.

Long, non retracting landing gear. Heavy, and draggy again.

The subsystems integration would be lousy also, with the separation of crew station from passenger cargo pod.

Like I said, a big F. Way to go, Swiss. Take some lessons from Pilatus, quickly.

pretty much my point: when i hear sillyvillians bitch about shit, it's an effort not to explain life to them.

Planet Irwin, August, 18 days in the box, zero showers for me, HHT CO relieved the XO AND First Shirt for his F-ups, leaving me running the LOGPACs with another career E-4.

then the asshole called me in to tell me i was going to be on KP, so i could "pull my weight for once"...

minor detail: i had a strep throat diagnosis, and a ABX Rx that ran past our go home date.

too bad i didn't go: i'd have shut down the Squadron mess 2 days before the AD evaluator did. (Field Sanitation Team trained %-)

Heh. Researching the upcoming disaster that is the Ghostbusters 2016 release is interesting though. And if you really, really wish to know what the plot is, there's an interesting video on the "WrecklessEating" YouTube channel. The guy who runs that channel got to see an advanced screening of the new Ghostbusters and essentially did a vlog on it. Apparently the movie was...bad.

http://tinyurl.com/zsx7nsb

I've been doing a little looking about on Ghostbusters 2016 ever since James Rolfe (the AVGN) did a video on Ghostbusters explaining why he wasn't going to see the movie, which earned him several unflattering articles about him being a misogynist nerd from the hacks in the MFM. But the signs of this movie being a ginormous shit bomb are all there:

Official pre-release reviews being embargoed (never a good sign).
The director and other hacks at Sony calling people misogynist and other nasty names for hating the trailer.
Rumors of several of the main actresses acting like divas and regretting being a part of this.
More rumors of the original cast essentially being forced into the movie via legal tactics.
And Ivan Reitman being forced more and more out of the project.

531 522: No, I don't think it was that one, though it may have derived from the same original data. There was some big Aussie study on insulin index as well.

Anyway, that's really what one ought to look at. It's sort of surprising but meats have insulin response as well. It's protein being converted to glucose. Now, fat doesn't do that directly, I don't think. But eating a lot of fat with high carbs can raise the insulin repsonse above what the carbs would do alone, I believe I've read.

It's something about the fat being dealt with preferentially, thus decreasing glucose consumption, raising blood sugar levels and causing insulin to have to rise to deal with the glucose.

If you eat a shit ton of fat with a shit ton of carbs, the carbs get converted to fat more than they would by themselves.

I was at White Sands in 1995 for the DC-X test flight, where they did what Larry Niven dubbed the 'death swoop.' Unfortunately it was also the day the Air Force handed it over to NASA, who destroyed it within a year with no intention of continuing development. If it had stayed with the AF, we'd probably be in much better shape today in regards to access to orbit. We might never have needed to hitch rides with the Russians.

Staying overnight in Las Cruces, NM was so dull we actually paid money to see the awful 'First Night.' The sole redeeming feature was that when Camelot was first shown, we all in almost perfect unison cried out, "It's only a model."

(1) For historical real-sized trains, there are many sites with a wealth of information. You can dive into YouTube and not come up for months -- you just have to know how to tickle it right, and for that, I would recommend https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whyte_notation. If you're looking for an 'American' 4-4-0 locomotive on Youtube, you get about 13,600 results. Try a 'Pacific' 4-6-2, and you get 41,900 results. And both searches are nearly guaranteed to be 99% trains.

(2) For specific trains, search the trains.

(3) The specific show I went to was for garden trains -- models that would run nicely in an acre or so -- 7" to 2' tall. You could do a lot worse than start by searching on the NGRC.
(4) Virtually everything about trains has local clubs you've never heard of. Once you find one, you'll be amazed at how many train nuts you've lived next to for all these years, never suspecting.

(5) And don't forget train museums! I believe you're in the LA area -- ever been to TravelTown in Griffith Park?

Incidentally, even though steam engines are usually heavily optimized towards one type of fuel, in a pinch they can usually run on another. That means a steam locomotive might run by burning wood, coal, furniture, miscreants, books, bales of hay, recycled plastics, 2x4s, legal documents, or currency.

MN story almost certainly will turn out to be, at worst, a shoot caused by stupid victim behavior. How hard is it to understand you'd better comply with police orders WHEN YOU HAVE A GUN IN YOUR LAP? The deceased, the woman, the relatives all reek of the sadly familiar pathologies, so far, as well.

Dallas stuff - not sure what the claim even is, a bit incoherent there. Not popular theory here but I'll bet the shooter acted alone, and whatever level of "blame" one wants to attribute to organizations and "climates" etc. will be the topic of a hopeless and pointless taffy-yank.

This leaves Baton Rouge. Haven't even looked at the (probably largely inaccurate) first basic take on that, but I gather a known bad guy was resisting arrest and scuffling with cops. Not real smart, but legitimacy of shoot remains to be seen.

556 A few years ago we were in Las Vegas for CES work and I had the visiting nephew of one of our tech journo friends working for us. We had a night off and he'd never been in LV before but was also under 21, so there were limited options. I was all ready to do the Heart Attack Grill but they won't take credit cards and require you to pay in advance, just in case you die on the spot. Since I was on expenses via the company credit card, we had to go elsewhere.

It's not the same kind of fun it once was for me. It used to be having someone that young in tow would be fun because we'd find a buffet and do some real damage. But my capacity has diminished greatly in recent years, although my weight still has much reduction needed. I'm down to 230 after being around 240 for many years but if I could get down around 200 there is a good probability I wouldn't need the blood pressure meds anymore. By coincidence, the monthly bill on the meds is a few buck more than the monthly cost of the gym I joined at the beginning of the month, so hopefully I'll only be paying for one by the end of the year.

The Industrial Revolution was based on steam. The more you know about how a steam locomotive works, the more you can understand about a modern motorcar's radiator, for instance....and, with that, you're well on your way to understanding HVAC.

Steam is the embryo for the mechanical version of "Ontogeny recapitulates Phylogeny".

There are a ton of railroad museums in Texas -- but at each one, "the more you know, the more you see." Check to see if some local ones have public lectures.

Further, can you explain the basic parts of a steam locomotive? Do you know where its cylinder is? Which "hump" is the steam dome? Why another hump is filled with sand? Why steam trains "chuff" when they're running? It can be a great opportunity to bond with the lad.

Because I love her
Yes I love her.
And I don't care what my baby do.
Fellas, if you knew my sugar, I declare you would love her too.

my baby sure wants to go:
Houston, Dallas,
and San Antonio.

Well, it's Houston,
great big ol' Houston,
I know that Galveston is a seaport town
I'm-a take my baby down and stomp that seaport on down.

Now if your baby ever go to Dallas
don't let her go down on Central Track
The cats down there will put down so much trash
you'll never get her back.

Now if she don't stay out of San Antone
off of East Commerce,
You can bet your bottom dollar
the Hepcat will have her ridin' in a hearse

Man, there's so many evil women
I'm gonna change my baby's name.
I'm gonna send her out to west Texas,
let her be a cattle girl on the range.

Palestine/Hattie Green.

Ultra-geek trivia: "Hattie Green" is now considered my some historians to be the very first-ever "rap" song despite being recorded in 1949 (!!!), as the singer ("Dr. Hepcat") apparently improvised the "lyrics" (which are mostly him just talking in rhythm) during the recording session. Way, way ahead of his time. And one of my favorite '40s rhythm & blues 78s.

600 The trick I always have about poison oak (besides catching it a lot as a child and becoming mostly immune, or drinking raw milk from the cow that grazed in it and becoming immune) is to wipe down exposed skin regularly with baby wipes. Add alcohol to the tub if you want. The stuff is designed to get greasy s***t of skin, after all.
Just treat it as an hourly decontam.

The other option, once you have the rash and wheals, is to use the gel from the benedryl gel caps on it. I like generic Waldryl from Walgreens, since the caps are bigger and have more goo.
The gel is really good for smearing on bee stings too.

We don't have poison ivy around here. The poison oak out-competes it.

Oh, and urushiol is what was used in the creation of Japanese lacquerware, the high end stuff that used to command big bucks. It is from the sap of the Chinese Lacquer tree, which is also related to poison oak.

I am now wondering if that would be a decent lacquer for rifle stocks.

Posted by: cthulhu at July 10, 2016 02:31 AM (EzgxV)

I should point out that I was not intending on sparking a scavenger hunt -- I was merely pointing out that understanding what is going on with a steam locomotive (and most of it ain't that tough) can really contribute to your enjoyment and experience at seeing one.

To start with, the big round tube that looks like your home water heater laying sideways.....is a boiler. More or less, the same thing as your home water heater laying sideways. Now most people know that water boils at 212 degrees (or 100 celsius).....except, it turns out, that's a special case: sea level, standard atmospheric pressure. If you close up your boiler and allow it to get to 100 psi, the boiling point will be significantly hotter than 212 degrees (328, if you're curious); if you go up to Colorado and try brewing tea, the boiling point will be significantly cooler than 212 degrees.

If you let that bad bitch get up to 200 psi, you boil at 382....and if you get to 400 psi, the boiling point is 445 degrees. This leads to some interesting observations regarding boiler explosions and automobile radiators -- chief among which is, if you're boiling along merrily at 445 degrees and 400 psi and your boiler springs a leak that brings you down to 200 psi, then you've got a lot of 445 degree water that is 63 degrees above its boiling point. This is why boiler explosions and radiator failures tend to have two halves -- the first half when you get a pinhole, and the second half when a bunch of your water flashes into steam.

The same principle helps explain what happens in HVAC. In the compressor (outside), freon is compressed until very hot -- but yet it's liquid because its boiling point at high pressure is high. It then runs through coils to radiate heat into the atmosphere. When it is piped back inside, it is poured across the evaporator coil -- on the high side, it should be liquid, and on the return side, it should be gas -- and that is what makes the coil cold.

Other basic parts of the locomotive are the cab -- where people and all the controls are; the firebox -- which is encapsulated by the boiler; and the frame.

The cylinders for a steam engine are found at the end of the open-air linkages that drive the wheels. Often, they are no larger than a couple of coffee-cans -- maybe a foot across and two feet deep. Yet all the rest of the engine is to support what happens there.

Most locomotives have domes stuck on top of their boiler. One is the "steam dome" and is intended to "dry the steam". Remember that the entire water heater part is full of water, and things are sloshing back and forth and getting bumped around all the time. If you put a little bump on top, the steam you collect from there will have less water sloshed into it. The steam dome will also have the whistle and the overpressure safety valve -- which you can use to identify it.

Another dome on top of the boiler holds sand. Why sand? Because steel wheels on steel tracks naturally have very little friction. So, when hill-climbing in your steam locomotive, you have the option to throw a little sand in-between the tracks and the wheels to give you traction. Once you know this, you can see how there is a big opening at the top of this dome to take sand in, and there are pipes running from below this dome that angle-in under the wheels. You've probably seen locomotives with this a thousand times and never saw it was a sand dome.

Finally, why do trains "chuff"? Going back to boilers, (a) it's tough to get fires to burn hot enough to heat water to 445 degrees; and going back to steam domes, (b) you want to have dry steam. If your cylinder took in 400 psi steam and let it out at 15 psi (normal air pressure), a bunch of it would turn to water in your cylinder. So it's best to take it in at 400 psi and release it at, say, 200 psi so that it's still pretty dry. In the meantime, you can take the 200 psi steam and fan your fire so that it can raise more 400 psi steam -- so the chuffing is solving (a) and (b) by keeping the cylinder hot and pressurized and blowing its exhaust across the flames (and up the stack).

And, yes, Chi, I know what time it is.

606 Good Morning Everyone.

607 the chuffing is solving (a) and (b) by keeping the cylinder hot and
pressurized and blowing its exhaust across the flames (and up the
stack).

Not so much across the flames since they are in the firebox under and in front of the cab and the exhaust is blowing through the smokebox to the stack all the way to the front of the boiler; what it is doing is creating a draft to pull fresh air in across the firebox grates. Which is why you put a fan on the top of the stack when first firing the locomotive, to create the draft of air across the firebox grates.

Then you get into superheaters, where you run the steam back through the flues to heat it up even further and get it to around 600 pounds or so...or multi-engined locomotives like the Union Pacific Big Boy 4-8-8-4 where you have high pressure and low pressure pistons...lots of fun stuff in steam locomotives, they were just about hitting the peak of their design when diesels started to take over.

If you have ever watched a steam locomotive pull into a station or slow to a stop you will notice about half a minute or so before she stops (like in this photo:http://tinyurl.com/ja3d8hd ) the engineer pulls the lever to open the cylinder petcocks creating a steam plume shooting out of the bottom of the cylinders. That's to drain the condensed water out of the cylinders.

Posted by: GGE Hades of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at July 10, 2016 03:53 AM (vbvxt)

608 Also, FWIW, there are four (or more!) chuffs per wheel rotation because the cylinders move 90 degrees out of phase with each other (120 degrees out of phase if you have a 3 cylinder locomotive with one connecting rod running down the centerline, Alco was famous for this). This was so there would always be at least one cylinder that could provide power to the drivers to get them to move the right way from a dead stop. (The actual chuff noise is caused by the exhaust valve opening to vent the cylinder as it reverses direction.)

Yeah, I'm kind of a train nerd.
