Quote of the Day I - Wisdom of the Whoopi Edition

"It's about a lot of different things. It's about an amendment in the Constitution that people misread. The Constitution doesn't say you can carry hundreds of guns. It says you can protect your home. It says you can protect yourself. It doesn't say you can get 55 guns."

-- Whoopi Goldberg explaining the Second Amendment

Actually contra Whoopi it says that the government cannot interfere with your existing right to own and use guns - including as many as you want.

Quote of the Day II

Even when liberals call for an "honest conversation" about this, that, or the other thing, what they really mean is they want everyone who disagrees with the prevailing progressive view to fall in line.

Almost invariably, when I hear calls for "frank talk," "honest dialogue," or a new "national conversation," I immediately translate it as, "Let the next chapter of indoctrination begin." It's a way of luring dissenters from political correctness out into the open so they can be smashed over the head with a rock.

Remember, behind every obvious double standard is a hidden single standard. For instance, earlier this year, The New Yorker's Jane Mayer came out with a book attacking libertarian philanthropists Charles and David Koch called Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right. When asked by NPR's Steve Inskeep what the nefarious supervillains of her screed were really up to, she ominously explained, "What they're aiming at is changing the conversation in the country."

Well, so are left-wing billionaire George Soros and his minions. So is Mayer herself. So are all of these campus fraudsters and activists. And so is Katie Couric. But when someone on the other side of the ideological chasm questions the official narrative, they must be demonized or otherwise silenced. Why? Because the last thing progressives want is to start an honest conversation. They want to have their conversations - and only their conversations.

-- Jonah Goldberg

Including having all purchases of AR-15s be reported to the FBI. And he also 'explains' the Second Amendment. Just looking out for the folks here.

"There is too much gun crime in the USA, and high-powered weaponry is too easy to get," he said. "That's the fact. So let's deal with it. We all have the right to bear arms, but we don't have the right to buy and maintain mortars. Even if you feel threatened by gangsters or a New World Order. No bazookas, no Sherman tanks, no hand grenades."

"That's because the Second Amendment clearly states the government has a right to regulate militias, made up of individuals," he continued. "They have that right in the name of public safety. Therefore, Congress should debate what kind of weapons should be available for public sale. And the states, the individual states, should decide what kind of carry laws are good for their own people."

O'Reilly is apparently unaware that it's perfectly legal to buy tanks and mortars - in fact you can even buy a mortar online without any background checks whatsoever as long as you've got the $$$$.

17 So Trump is meeting with the NRA to tell them to fuck off? I doubt that very much.

NRA Statement on Terror Watchlists
Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Fairfax, Va.--The executive director of the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action, Chris W. Cox, released the following statement regarding terror watchlists:

We are happy to meet with Donald Trump. The NRA's position on this issue has not changed. The NRA believes that terrorists should not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms, period. Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing. If an investigation uncovers evidence of terrorist activity or involvement, the government should be allowed to immediately go to court, block the sale, and arrest the terrorist. At the same time, due process protections should be put in place that allow law-abiding Americans who are wrongly put on a watchlist to be removed. That has been the position of Sen. John Cornyn (R.-Tex.) and a majority of the U.S. Senate. Sadly, President Obama and his allies would prefer to play politics with this issue.

35 O'Riley was, is and always will be a woefully under informed blowhard as regards most anything outside of his personal bubble of interests.

I remember having watched a few of his shows back in the Inside Edition days.

Smarmy, condescending jerkwad then, just as he is now.

Sadly, there's a certain demographic, likely the same one who thinks Shep Smith is a Newsman in the Murrow profile, who also thinks O'Riley really is, just looking out for them.

For ratings, for clicks, and for sales of his books, trinkets and ties.

His loss from the teevee would be no more noticeable than pulling one's finger from the ocean. With, of course, the hope of being replaced with a better show.

87 "In addition to which, the Second Amendment makes no mention of the number or nature of weapons a citizen may have, nor does it specify that they be used for home defense, or self-defense."

When the 2nd was written common citizens and the military could possess the same firearms. There was no distinction mentioned or implied. The idea was that the common man could fight an oppressive standing army on even terms.

Posted by: Ricardo Kill at June 15, 2016 11:50 PM (9ym/8)

88 Conservative concede too often that the 2d amendment is about self defense, or about defense of your home & family, or about hunting. So the anti-rights people can say "No one NEEDS [scary gun of the week] to defend themselves of shoot deer. The Framers clearly didn't have machine guns in mind when the wrote the 2d amendment." And many on the right mistakenly agree with them. But the 2d amendment isn't about self defense; it's about defending a free citizenry against tyranny. And yes, to defend against tyranny, if it ever come to taking up arms, WILL require "military style" weapons.

148 More to the "The framers didn't intend for the 2d amendment to allow high-power semi-automatic assault rifles" canard. Not specifically, because they couldn't foresee the development of those weapons, just like they couldn't foresee Facebook or Twitter or Grindr when they wrote the 1st amendment. Neither could they foresee the military, foreign or domestic, having such advanced weapons either. The fact is the military will always have the more advanced weapons, and the framers knew this. But the citizenry will always have the numbers advantage, and, one hopes, the moral advantage.

149 Well, my mother has been home for two days now. Early this morning, we had to take her for another zapping. It was supposed to be the last one, but the puh-sychiatrist in charge decided he wants to do one more, on Friday.

I'd never seen him before, but he's the one in charge of it. And he looks the part, almost right out of central casting for a character who would be doing something like that.

I'd never seen the immediate aftermath of it before with her. I did this morning, and it's "confused and bewildered". The short term memory gets completely scrambled and out to lunch for a few hours afterwards, and she was asking me the same thing over and over again.

She asked me "Now, just what is that man doing to me?" I thought, "Good question, Mama, what *is* that man doing to you...."

Now, she's eating. We stopped at a Waffle House afterwords. While confused and no short term memory, she puttered around pretty good, and was hungry. She's always loved eggs and bacon and stuff like that and she dug into it pretty good.

Around 7PM, about 12 hours afterwards, and from what I gather, that's when the aftereffect haze really subsides, I learned she has no memory of the past month. She was really wondering what happened to her and where she had been and why. She could tell we were being careful about what we said, and quickly deduced "it was mental".

I was afraid that would really worry and upset her. It did for a minute of two, but after that it was mostly she was just puzzled about it, couldn't believe something had happened of which she had no memory.

She asked me questions along all night until she went to bed.

Now, the zapping Friday will probably wipe all of today and tomorrow out as well, and I'll be having the same conversation with her late Friday.

This is what it is.

First, peak current used was 800mA. That's strikes me as a lot. But it goes through the brain and nowhere else (much). Second, it's a pulsed thing, about 40Hz and some other waveform information.

You don't like the 2nd amendment fine. Then the way to change it is to pass another amendment. Not stomp your feet and pretend the 2nd doesn't say what it says.

It's been done four different times regard to other constitutional issues. They didn't try to find meaning where there was none.

Imagine if you try to say that the 5th didn't extend the right against self incrimination in really serious cases involving multiple murders or treason. Because serious.

Crew : Alert on the radar altimeter.
Houston: Hit reset
Crew : Got another alert
Houston : Ignore it

They were about thirty seconds to a minute or so from touch down. I remember thinking they were in trouble. Armstrong landed visually using sight lines etched on the window, which was also a back up plan for navigation. They had calculated trajectories based on sun, moon, and stars using the hash marks on the window.

And it was the 4004. That I was able to find, though the link is long lost. I was not able to find an admission that this one incident led directly to the 8080 as the industry was advancing rapidly.

Another point to remember. We went to the moon with engineers educated in the forties and fifties, before computers and CNC machines.

It realy is a shame that we haven't gone back.

Posted by: Insomniac at June 15, 2016 11:55 PM (0mRoj)

But I don't get why they, including the feminazis, buy into that. These are real people who actually believe that shit. Why? For instance, those ridiculously high "college campus rapes" statistics we always hear about.

I went away to college for 4 years. I did my share of stupid behavior, drinking, meeting guys, partying, walking around alone, and so on. I was NEVER threatened with rape. I didn't know one single woman who was raped.

I'm not saying there weren't a few criminals who went to colleges at night and cornered women and raped them. Because, if you are a criminal, a college campus is a perfect place to look for victims. There are women walking around alone all day and all night. I know it happened occasionally. But this idea that male college students are raping girls right and left is just outrageous, and I don't understand why these women believe it.

There are a few women who have been raped, and it is a terrible thing. But I don't understand how anyone who talks to real people can think that a high percentage of women have had this happen to them.

Well, my mother has been home for two days now. Early this morning, we
had to take her for another zapping. It was supposed to be the last one,
but the puh-sychiatrist in charge decided he wants to do one more, on
Friday.

I'd never seen him before, but he's the one in charge
of it. And he looks the part, almost right out of central casting for a
character who would be doing something like that.

I'd never
seen the immediate aftermath of it before with her. I did this morning,
and it's "confused and bewildered". The short term memory gets
completely scrambled and out to lunch for a few hours afterwards, and
she was asking me the same thing over and over again.

She asked me "Now, just what is that man doing to me?" I thought, "Good question, Mama, what *is* that man doing to you...."

Now, she's eating. We stopped at a Waffle House afterwords. While
confused and no short term memory, she puttered around pretty good, and
was hungry. She's always loved eggs and bacon and stuff like that and
she dug into it pretty good.

Around 7PM, about 12 hours
afterwards, and from what I gather, that's when the aftereffect haze
really subsides, I learned she has no memory of the past month. She was
really wondering what happened to her and where she had been and why.
She could tell we were being careful about what we said, and quickly
deduced "it was mental".

I was afraid that would really worry
and upset her. It did for a minute of two, but after that it was mostly
she was just puzzled about it, couldn't believe something had happened
of which she had no memory.

She asked me questions along all night until she went to bed.

Now, the zapping Friday will probably wipe all of today and tomorrow
out as well, and I'll be having the same conversation with her late
Friday.

This is what it is.

255 Regarding mortars: no, you can't buy just a live one, they were classified as Destructive Devices from 1968 onward and transfers require $200 tax stamp and Federal background check-- including sign off by local law enforcement. Some states will have their own additional requirements. It's very similar experience to the regulation of machine guns though without the freeze on new registrations from 1986.
That Yugoslav mortar on the Apex sight has a bore sized hole cut in the side of the tube and IIRC the firing mechanism demilitarized. It is NOT useable nor readily restorable.

269 The program alarms when Apollo was landing were due to the rendezvous radar being on and overloading the guidance computer from time to time, not due to the landing radar.

You couldn't fly the LM if the landing radar wasn't working.

Some good writeups on the net about how the AGC gave the alarm, discarded the unnecessary low-priority tasks, reset itself almost instantly and continued on with the important tasks when this occurred, as it did, unexpectedly, multiple times during the first landing.

Here's a super-detailed article about the whole story:

A Panzerfaust is not all that complicated, basically being a length of pipe, a projectile that consists of a length of broomstick with some fins nailed to one end and a warhead on the other end, and a charge of a couple of ounces of black powder.

What is the attitude of the BATFE to assembling those components and launching projectiles, assuming that the warhead is inert? Is the thing a muzzle loading gun? It loads from the muzzle and it uses a black powder charge. Is it a destructive device requiring expensive and hard to obtain license to be legal?

And he knows the difference.

That stupid bint in the White House wouldn't know a real man if he slapped her silly, but of course, he never would. A real man has more sense than to waste time with that sort of "woman" (read: bitch).

And a real woman knows her man, loves her man, and puts up with all his man stuff because it is part of who he is, and she loves who he is. She doesn't try to change him to be her best girlfriend. She doesn't try to be in charge (he is), and she sure as hell brags on him when he is not around.

Well, I'm rural, so I could make noise at 0300, if I had a mind to. But mowing in the dark, even with headlights on the mower, is enough of a PITA, that I don't care to do it. Maybe if I were almost done, and needed only another 20 minutes to complete the job, yeah. But I got the sector done that I wanted to do, and there are several yet to do, and then it's time to start over again. So I do about an hour per day during the growth spurt, and am never fully caught up, but the place looks cared-for.

I don't know if it is still the case but in Japan contraceptives used to be either illegal or greatly restricted and abortion was the only legal way for adults who had sex to avoid children. I believe that things were similar in the Soviet Union. One of the reasons that the Soviet birth rate was so low was that after multiple abortions many women became infertile.

377 Mornin'. Insomnia bad tonight.

nerdygirl's post reminds me of the night a couple of months ago when I heard load knocking at my door at 1:30 in the morning, while I was fast asleep.

I live in a 24-unit apartment building, and while it's in a nice suburban area and most of the tenants are decent, hard-working folks, anyone who's lived in a multi-unit dwelling knows that some weird shit can sometimes happen. I figured it was someone who had too much to drink and was knocking at the wrong door.

Looked out my peephole and it was two cops. Holy shit! My heart was pounding. Then again, I'm a law-abiding citizen who had done nothing wrong and I was fast asleep since it was 1:30 in the freaking morning. I said f--k it and went back to bed. They kept up the knocking for about 20 minutes, off and on, then finally left.

Found out later from other tenants that a guy in the building had been found dead and it was initially thought to be suspicious in nature, so they were canvassing the building. Toxicology reports later showed he had died of an overdose. Again, not a typical event in my building, but shit happens everywhere. Guy had a job, nice car, all that. Must have been a secret addict.

But really, canvassing the neighborhood at 1:30 in the morning? It couldn't wait? It's not like there was any threat of a serial killer running around the building. He obviously had no wounds since it turned out to be an OD. He apparently had some "friends" with him when he OD'd and they robbed his place before taking off and leaving him there to die. The theft aspect must be why they thought it was suspicious.
