More Details on the Orlando Shooter He worked as a security guard for G4S and for the last several years was assigned to a gated retirement community in South Florida. Before that he worked for a while as a guard at the St. Lucie County Courthouse in Fort Pierce. Back in 2006 he worked as a prison guard at Martin Correctional Institution in Indiantown for six months. Report: Orlando Shooter Was a Regular at the Gay Nightclub He Attacked Which is interesting given that he lived 120 miles away with a wife and kid. True Fact: 96.2% of All Mass Shootings Occur in Gun-Free Zones Because mass killers may be evil but they're not stupid, and even jihadis bent on martyrdom still don't like getting shot.
Uproxx: Can We At Least Try A Short-Term Ban on Assault Weapons Like the AR-15 the Shooter Used? Disappointingly stupid from Uproxx which usually isn't this dumb. But the leftist media and their allies have all jumped in on bringing back their beloved 1994 Assault Weapons ban and banning the evil AR-15 rifle. Except Mateen Didn't actually Use an AR-15 - He Used a Sig Sauer MCX Carbine Which also uses STANAG magazines and superficially resembles the AR-15 yet has very few shared parts. Which means banning "AR-15s" is not going to be so simple. And guess what - the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban Achieved Fuck-All In Reducing Gun Crime or Eliminating Rifles like the "AR-15" Case in point: One of these rifles was banned during the 1994 AWB and one was not. Both function identically and unless you're clued into details of the law you'd have difficulty knowing which one was an evil AW and which one was merely a black semi-automatic sporting rifle. What John Oliver's 'Debt Forgiveness' Actually Meant Here's the thing. Oliver didn't actually buy $15 million in medical debt, as news stories would have you believe. Instead, he bought the right to collect $15 million in medical debt. The debt "forgiveness" was, in reality, Oliver choosing not to exercise his right to collect that debt. So it was mostly a stunt. And meanwhile someone had to still cover all of those medical expenses even if they were written off. Of course, there's no such thing as free money, and somebody has to cover the $15 million in debt that has gone unpaid (and would have gone unpaid regardless of Oliver's stunt). As Joe Carter argues, the cost of unpaid debt is passed on to hospitals, who in turn pass it on to their patients in the form of higher taxes, higher prices for care, and higher insurance costs. In fact, those costs had already been passed on to consumers before Oliver even considered "forgiving" the debt. So it turns out that all of us have been paying for this debt via expensive hospital charges and higher insurance premiums. So congratulations, you're now at least as virtuous as John Oliver. White House Throws in the Towel on Closing Gitmo Despite promising to close it on his very first day in office. Hopefully to soon be eradicated. It's worth noting that while guinea worm is not fatal, it does cause a great deal of suffering. Over the course of a year, the worm grows up to three feet long in its human host, then tries to exit the body via the feet or the legs. If a health worker is nearby, the patient might be lucky enough to have the worm excised with a knife or coiled around a stick. But usually the tunneling worm creates a burning sensation so severe that it drives the person suffering to seek relief by plunging the afflicted leg in cooling water-which in turn allows the worm to unleash thousands of eggs in the water supply, leaving a new generation of guinea worms to find unwitting hosts. Nevada Primary 2016: Early Voting Roundup And Prognostications
With the unpredictability shown this Presidential cycle so far, prognostications for the Fall: Turnout will more likely mirror 2012 more than 2014, but the biggest variable remains the effect of the Presidential race. All else equal, turnout and registration suggests that Hilly wins Nevada's six electoral votes; the Democrats keep the U.S. Senate seat; and Democrats retake the Assembly. The biggest question is: Who will win SD6 this Fall and thus control of the Nevada state Senate for four years, and in partial answer to that, who will win the Republican primary for SD6 on the 13th? http://politicalhat.com/?p=11953 Posted by: The Political Hat at June 13, 2016 10:28 PM (vBeA5) Posted by: The Political Hat at June 13, 2016 10:28 PM (vBeA5) 6

From WZ via The Blaze Following the deadly terrorist attack in Orlando early Sunday morning, employees from a few local Chick-fil-A restaurants went to work to make food for those donating blood to victims. The Christian-owned company is known for being closed nationwide on Sundays, but decided to make an exception following the gruesome shooting that left 49 dead and at least 53 others injured. Gah that NRO article gets more wrong than it corrects (surprise, surprise) and ignores the actual big concerns.
First Stat of Limitations has little to do with whether a debt is collectable, barring a handful of extinguishing states. It just removes garnishment, liens and judicial remedy from the possible courses of actions. Second, there's more concern about licensing (depending on where hes located), document retention and HIPAA. Is Oliver really going to properly treat the records he received? my money is no. And then there's the fact that if Oliver actually forgave the debt, the IRS classifies that as income for the recipients if over $600. So if Oliver forgave a 10K hospital bill, he is required to 1099C the "lucky" recipient, and they are required to claim it as income in the next year. The 15 million in medical bills; the hospitals over bill. So the actual amount they're out of pocket for is less.
Since hospitals won't tell anyone what procedures actually cost, it's hard to tell how much. They will charge different amounts depending on if you're paying cash or credit, or if you have insurance, who your insurance company is (some companies have locked in deals on the amounts for procedures and drugs and the room). Hospital care (including surgical and ER and ICU) is the only industry that you can't get a flat estimate of costs up front. They have to know your financial circumstances and how you'll pay before they will tell you how much it will be. One of the reasons why the push for gov't medical care is because of this but they still get away with not telling the anyone how much something will cost. It's worse than the funeral industry used to be and it needs the same laws applied to it. Then maybe the costs could come down and people could shop for a better deal. Which, of course, is one reason why the hospitals do things that way. And also they could standardize their billing and their procedures which is not the case these days even with medicare and ACA. Hospitals share the blame for the problems with medical care. And the Gov't interference. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at June 13, 2016 11:26 PM (ECJ+C) 150

Health care costs, well it will likely be what blows up Uncle. If something else doesn't first. Hell, the cost increases are just astronomical. The inflation thereof is just ridiculous, and if you accurately look at its contribution to the federal budget (Medicare, Medicaid, all the money Uncle spends on healthcare in one form or another), it's the biggest exponential.

Well if the new strategry for the Holy Warriors of Islam is hostage taking that means there will be hostage negotiators, and swat teams will be held back so the negotiators have time to work out a deal.
And there will be time for the news media to get satellite trucks on scene so the blood sucking vampires can get face time in front of the camera while all the drama of a hostage rescue is ongoing. The news media will get higher ratings as more people tune in to the drama, and the networks will be able to charge higher advertising rates. The news media is going to be profitable again if they can get one of these mass murder/hostage dramas every other week or so, until the election. Law enforcement gets overtime standing around while the hostage negotiator negotiates. Politicians can get on camera to get their talking points out and explain why taxes have to go higher, and why more regulations are needed to keep us all safe. Expert pundits will have something to pundit about. Everybody wins. Of course, two or three good guys, with guys, inside, could end it thirty seconds after the first gunshot and all that would be left would be hours and hours of paperwork, and who wants that? So far, I've heard an interview with a supposed childhood friend of Mateen who claims Mateen in HS was always cheering for Islamic terrorism events. Said he would sit in class and make airplane noises and explosion noises right after 9/11 and ended up being told to leave the school and was sent to a private school.
Problem with childhood friend's story is timeline. 9/11 happened 15 years ago, when Mateen was 14, putting him in junior high, not HS. The more the guy talked, the more 'embellished" the story became of what Mateen said and did. We have shell shocked witnesses who claim Mateen was a frequent patron of the gay bar, located 125 miles away from his home. Tonight we have another person claiming that Mateen was gay and asked this other guy out, they frequented gay bars, etc. I'm not buying anything these supposed friends and witnesses are saying. A lot of people want their 15 minutes of fame, and I'm finding it hard to believe most of what is being said by these people coming out of the woodwork. He was a regular worshiper at his local mosque, confirmed today by members and the Imam. He was turned into the FBI when the FBI interviewed mosque members about the Syrian car bomber who was also a member. The members of the mosque told the FBI that Mateen was studying the videos of the American Cleric who is wanted in Iraq by the CIA and they were concerned he was being radicalized. That is how the FBI found out about the association between Mateen and Syrian guy. Also that Mateen had not had contact with him other than at the mosque. The gay community wants desperately to believe that this was the act of a lone nut influenced by the haters here in America, that he was a confused gay, etc. They don't want to believe there is an entire religious community whose doctrine dictates that any non repentent gay should have "Allah rain down fire on them" as Mark Levin read out of the Koran, naming chapter and verse this evening. So just gonna throw this out there..
In Cashtown PA there is an old building called the Cashtown Inn. Built in 1812. It's a Bed and Breakfast/restaurant now. A large portion of the Southern Army of Hospitality marched past this place on the way to Gettysburg. Was used as a command base and a hospital by the South. More Southerner's crossed it's threshold than any building North of Richmond. All kinds of antiques and paintings from the era are on display. So any way to make a long story short (to late I know), I went on a date there. Keep in mind I have not been out on a date in a year and a half. We were the only ones there the whole time. Probably the most romantic date I have ever been on. It was Epic. Even went to Gettysburg for a Guiness afterwards. So awesome so far. But then, She is going into the peace corpse in October and just wants to be friends before she leaves. No blame, I would do the same thing...if I was still a liberal hippy... -Cast Iron Skillets... I'd left my skillet with residue for over a week. ...I was lazy. I poured vegetable oil in it to clean the bits off of the bottom. (NEVER clean your skillet in water... duh.) I had an electric stove on seven for over an hour, scraped it with a metal spatula and there were still burned-on bits. ...so I turned it up to eight. I left the stove for under two minutes and when I got back, there was a glow. The vegetable oil had caught fire, right under the microwave, and I had to "calmly" grab a pan lid and cover the minor disaster. Note: Even an electric stove can catch you off-guard with oil when high heat is applied. I only went out to open the garage door, so as to let the smoke depart. The oil had been bubbling for under a minute when I opened a window and went to open the garage door. The good news is I knew what to do and the fire didn't damage the microwave. If there were a religion preaching human sacrifice that was down with the Left in their war on Western Civilization and Judeo-Christianity, then the Progs would be inviting them to immigrate here and granting affirmative-action set-asides to them and attacking average Americans for their "phobia" against the human-sacrifice religion.
Then, when their followers actually went out and sacrificed some human to their god, the Progs would claim it was because they were "radicalized" by the hostility of average Americans against the human-sacrifice religion and say that the worst possible outcome of such an event would be a backlash against the human-sacrifice religion. "IIRC, less than a year before he announced Alzheimer's." Reagan was deposed in connection with the Iran-Contra affair after leaving the Presidency, but well before 1994. He was shown a photograph at one point during that proceeding and was asked if he recognized the individual depicted in the photo. Reagan said that, no, he honestly couldn't recall the man. It was Gen. John Vessey. Who had been the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs during the time frame when the Iran-Contra deal was being cooked up, and with whom Reagan ought to have been instantly familiar. Reagan at that point in his life was already sufficiently impaired that his imprimatur should not have been being lent to anything. So what do we know about the most recent shooter ?
He was a registered Democrat. He believed in affirmative action for blacks. He had a state security guard license (which blows are the proposed Democrat 2nd Amendment "solutions" to bits). He had Muslim roots. He flew to Saudi Arabia in 2011 and 2012. He was a wife beater. He cheered for the terrorists on 9/11. He was gay. A former classmate of Omar Mateen's 2006 police academy class said he believed Mateen was gay, saying Mateen once asked him out. But really, why do we get stuck with the mess of gay-on-gay crime by a wife-beating Muslim Democrat ? Posted by: Islamic Rage Boy at June 14, 2016 12:55 AM (e8kgV) 342

Posted by: eleven at June 14, 2016 12:55 AM (qUNWi) Just as an aside, nearly any document, image, or video can get a "wrapper" that installs malware before processing the file as usual. You just see whatever you think you were going to. A great deal of the malware going around these days is polymorphic -- it can send lists of your files to hackers today, keylog your browser sessions for the rest of this week, and go ransomware next Thursday. There are ways of mitigating this risk, but they take some doing to set up correctly. Posted by: cthulhu at June 14, 2016 01:02 AM (EzgxV) 355

The shooting ended around 5am. Father of suspect was able to be cool and composed at a press conference a mere 5 hours later. How did he get informed by LOE and manage to not be going so nuts that he would be incoherent in that length of time? Especially when it is not simply "your child died", it's "your child was the perp". Normal people would be in shock, not heading to a press conference. *Maybe* have a "spokesman" issue a statement. I missed the "food deserts" thread, and it's now a deceased thread, so I'll post my comment about them here instead.
------------------------------- About five years ago I pitched a story to a major magazine about food deserts. They liked the idea and provisionally accepted it but told me to first write just a little bit of it and show it to them. So I did just that. I did some research and on-the-ground reporting and discovered that, basically: a. "Food deserts" are a fake non-fact. In reality the reverse is true: Since middle and upper-middle class people tend to live in spread-out suburban "bedroom communities" with no retail centers, whereas poorer people live in denser inner cities with more stores, it turns out that the richer you are, the further you live from a food store -- which is the exact opposite of the leftist "food desert" theory which stipulates that poor people literally have no access to food or supermarkets. b. To the extent that there are no decent supermarkets in some poor neighborhoods, there is a perfectly valid and unchangeable reason for that: Because the pre-existing supermarkets in poor areas lost money, and couldn't stay afloat, and so went bankrupt or moved elsewhere. I actually interviewed owners who once had stores in poorer areas, and they regaled me with tales of aisles well-stocked with real food but empty of customers; of customers who wanted only junk food; of rampant shoplifting. You can't force a business owner to stay in business with a store that's losing money. c. Sad fact is that poor people just make atrocious dietary choices, and that even when presented with healthy options, they choose junk food. This had been proven countless times in studies. So I turned in a very well-written first section, and...(you guessed it)...the magazine suddenly canned the story and told me not to bother writing any more because they wouldn't run it. Soon after, the editors stopped communicating with me altogether. Too bad. I never did write the story, even though I still had so much more great material. There was one great ("great" in the sense of "face-palming") anecdote about a situation that happened in Berkeley, CA about 15 years ago: There was a Safeway store kind of on the edge of the poor part of town, but it fell victim to constant shoplifting and nearby residents just ignoring it in favor of liquor stores...so that Safeway closed down because it was losing money. The property remained vacant for a year or two so the city council was freaking out about a "food desert" developing right there in Berkeley OMG! But interestingly there was a nearby store that had been a small Japanese market which had gotten popular with Berkeley hipsters because it had the best vegetable selection in town right at the same time that the "foodie" scene was first emerging. So a lightbulb went off over someone's head and the city offered,. basically, to bribe the Japanese market owners if they would just move their store into the old Safeway space and hugely expand their inventory and take over as a full-service supermarket. The Japanese guys said okay, but on one condition: They in good conscience could not and would not sell junk food or unhealthy food, because as a combination Japanese market/produce outlet/health food store, selling junk food (like malt liquor and hot Cheetos) went against their core principles. The city was about to agree to this, but then they held public hearings about the news store -- and all hell broke loose! At the meetings, the poor people (who, in Berkeley demographics, are mostly black) DEMANDED that the new store carry junk food! And if you don't cave on this issue - you're a racist! We want Cheetos! Absolutely topsy-turvy bizarre. Anyway, the Japanese owners did eventually cave (the bribe was too sweet a deal), and agreed to open a full-service supermarket in the old Safeway space. Guess what happened? Even though it was a massive great store right in the poor neighborhood, with the lowest-price best-quality produce anywhere in the Bay Area, and even though it did indeed carry junk food as demanded, the poor people just ignored it and continued shopping at liquor stores. The crazy upside to the story is that the new location was a MASSIVE hit with the white foodie hipster crowd --because it had all those sweet, sweet Safeway parking spaces, whereas their old location had no parking lot at all. The store became so profitable that they even opened a second location further into the poor area (where rents are cheaper), and now the Japanese guys are probably the wealthiest business owners in the whole city. And the stores remain in business today -- with a primarily white/Asian/hipster/upscale clientele. Which brings us back to "food deserts." So now, in the very city where the "food desert" theory was first concocted, there are TWO gigantic inexpensive high-quality produce markets right in the poor neighborhoods - but which are totally ignored by the local poor (black) residents, who continue to buy junk food. Meanwhile, the white people from the foodless rich areas drive miles and miles to go to their beloved hipster food store -- in the slum. Thus the "food desert" reality paradigm is totally reversed from the fraudulent theory. And the world keeps turning. Posted by: zombie at June 14, 2016 02:33 AM (jBuUi) 432

G'Morning Ricardo.
Hard to imagine what fresh hell awaits us today. Long talks yesterday with Little VIA about moral positions concerning right and wrong. And the Christian doctrine of our God being the decider of worthiness. And comparing that to the Islamic teachings of the human follower being Judge, sentencer and executioner. Spent Sunday night at the campground with my gay sister. She did not want to talk about Orlando.
Will they finally wake up? Posted by: creeper at June 14, 2016 06:27 AM (eiZQ+) 465

Got good advice from jc, formulated a plan, ran a proof-of-concept, got supplies. A bunch of execution still going on, but pretty much on tracks.

Puzzlingly, I'm not experiencing much outrage over the Orlando massacre...
I wonder how much longer the Left can hold together its yeasty coalition of diverse misfits, miscreants and malcontents, each with their own competing interests... The expected calls in the media for moar gun control seem half-hearted and perfunctory, and the calls for action on radical Islam are growing louder. So I'm actually a bit encouraged. And I've read reports that the globalists are fearful that any coming revolution will be in opposition to the strong-arm nanny state! Posted by: Zettai Ryoiki at June 14, 2016 06:30 AM (kP16F) 468

That is what cognitive dissonance sounds like. Silence. They don't know whether to fish or cut bait. Posted by: rickb223 at June 14, 2016 07:04 AM (RkYsP) 469

On the Reddit story - I read it for programming (software development) news, because there just aren't any good general programming news sites anywhere. Oh, and for pictures of red pandas.
The News subreddit (/r/news) has always been awful, and /r/worldnews is an Orwellian nightmare, but this was something else. Entire pages of nothing but deleted posts. Posted by: Pixy and the Hamsters at June 14, 2016 08:18 AM (2yngH) 471

I keep hearing "if he was gay how could he attack a gay nightclub". Many Islamic arab men practice homosexuality but don't identify with it and don't consider themselves gay. In fact they will kill gay men that identify themselves as gay. Same for the pedo problem they have. We think with our western minds and ask how can it be? They think with there non-western minds, so don't try to wrap your western mind and try to find a reasonable answer, you won't find it. They are psychopaths, Islam indoctronates them. They might be nice to you in fact may agree with you, don't believe them. I'm not saying don't befriend them because you need to know what the lies are. Believe me they will lie to you, remember Islam belief system different. One day though some get called to act. We think with our western minds try to rationalize it but you can't so don't. Be vigilant, be aware. It's a shame I have always prayed this crap wouldn't come home.

"True Fact: 96.2% of All Mass Shootings Occur in Gun-Free Zones
Because mass killers may be evil but they're not stupid, and even jihadis bent on martyrdom still don't like getting shot." There is another reason mass shootings don't occur in guns-allowed zones -- People with guns stop them from becoming mass shootings.
