Clovis tools have been found with extinct horse DNA on them. The horse went extinct around 10-12k years ago here, but due to migration across the Bering Strait survived in the rest of the world.
It was then reintroduced to the Americas by the Spaniards.

Anyone who doesn't support Donald Trump's "deportation force" is labeled as being in favor of "amnesty" or "open borders" even though it is entirely consistent to be opposed to both some "deportation force" and also opposed to mass amnesty.

And that is one of the frustrating parts of this discussion. The discussion is so polarized, that either you must be in favor of deporting every single illegal, or you must be in favor of granting amnesty to every single illegal. I don't favor either end.

We have speed limits in this country, but of course, they are rarely enforced strictly.
Do you favor "enforcing the speed limit laws"? Doing what is necessary to crack down every last person who goes 1 mph over the speed limit? Because if you don't, you are opposed to the rule of law, you know....

We can do what everyone else does: foreigners carry their passports everywhere and produce them on demand. Without a valid visa they cannot rent hotel rooms and apartments, and certainly cannot enter i to contracts like mortgages. Without valid work papers they cannot work.
This policy works everywhere else in the world, and will obviously work here.

Do you ever hear anyone say, well we should only arrest 20% of murderers? Or well, I realize there are thousands of people out there driving drunk, but really, there's no need to try and arrest them all. If we just arrest the "bad" drunks, it's OK.

Words that have perfectly good, specific meanings (that you and many others cannot seem to understand), are "slurs".
If you don't understand that enforcement of laws is required for them to be effective, and that anything other than full enforcement of immigration law and return to rule of law in related matters internally guarantees (guarantees) exacerbation of the current situation - probably massively so - then you are not a serious person. At least on this huge issue.
And the "study" you reference is most likely meaningless (aside from whatever utility it has anyway - how are political views measured ..... is it just another "Fox News viewers LESS informed!" bit of garbage?).
So places that are now dominated by racism and authoritarianism and lawlessness and rent-seeking in "governance" - CA, for example - that are also without exception the states with the largest immigrant populations (recent, longer ago, legal, illegal) will ..... stay that way.

But, to go with 'speeding' - it is possible to speed without meaning to, without realizing it; there are even circumstances under the law in which violation of the local speed limits is permissible. It is difficult to imagine immigrating accidentally, and it beggars imagination to conceive of a circumstance that would make illegal immigration permissible on the basis of some other legally-recognized necessity.

One of the simpler tactics is to lead someone deeper into the weeds by parsing out all of the trivial exceptions to a general statement. It blunts a person's point that way. It's similar to what Sexypig was doing yesterday on the "Trump and the judge" thread when he/she was going on about Italian-American Bar Associations and Irish American Bar Associations and so on.

For the billionth time, enforcement of immigration law used to be done routinely, whenever there was contact with the state, or the legal system, or aspects of the private economy that are highly regulated.
Open a checking account. Get pulled over for speeding. Register your kids for local school. Apply for a job. On, and on, and on.
And, for known concentrations of illegals, like certain industries, of course targeted enforcement actions. It only takes a few.
For the billionth time, educate yourself about what happened in just a few months in AZ after they passed an enforcement-enhancement law.
Just changing the body english of the state/State on this matter produces instant, dramatic results. Of course.
Oh - and for the other bizarre AOSHQ myth on a related matter - that border barriers don't work. Yes they do. Of course they do. And of course - obviously - they are a key part of a comprehensive restoration of rule of law. Leaving aside entirely the huge security issue they address.
But - enough. It's all a lost cause, America is hopelessly crippled by what can only be called the stupidity of the bulk of its citizens. And their descent into infantile moral narcissism.

But if you are, then this would require either one of two things, or probably both actually:
1. gigantic tax increases to pay for all of the new police officers to track down all of the speeders. All of those police officers will wind up hassling people who aren't doing anything terribly wrong, except going 66 mph in a 65 mph zone, and will lead to all sorts of other interactions with police, which will inevitably erode further our search-and-seizure protections of the fourth amendment.
2. mandates that the government imposes on *law-abiding* citizens to prove that we *aren't* one of those speeders. Similar to the breathalyzer devices that are now mandated to be placed on the cars of repeat drunk drivers. Because the government really can't catch every last criminal, the government will instead force everyone to obey by limiting their liberties in other ways. They do this sort of thing now with gun laws, force everyone to prove they *aren't* criminals instead of the government proving that a potential buyer *is* a criminal.
And I am jealous enough of my own liberties that I don't want to see any more of them eroded in the name of tracking down a problem that is, in the grand scheme of things, not all that serious.
I see the issue analogously when it comes to illegal immigration. Of course we increase border security and of course we crack down on visa overstays and of course we do a better job of enforcing the law. But going to extended lengths in order to track down every last one is just foolish and counterproductive. We wouldn't do that for any other law on the books, not even the most heinous ones. We have unsolved murders and rapes on the books you know.

By his very presence inside the borders of America the illegal is a lawbreaker. That is starkly different than even the most recalcitrant drunk driver, who is not always breaking the law.
So....every single contact with officialdom is an opportunity to identify and deal with the illegal, unlike the other lawbreakers you cite.

Seriously, this is getting silly. It's called illegal immigration because it's, wait for it, illegal. No amount of time magically makes it not illegal.
We don't need shock troops going door to door to root out every illegal. There are numerous steps that could be made like making people show their birth certificates for enrolling in schools, getting jobs, etc. as well as a host of other things that could be done to make life here exceedingly difficult for any illegal to be in the country.
Would you get all of them? Probably not. But it would be a monstrous step in the right direction. Nobody is allowed to be in Mexico or other countries illegally, what possible logic could you be using to justify any of them being here illegally regardless of how long they have been here?

It does require a reasonable effort to identify and apprehend offenders - which we're not making now - and carrying out the appropriate sanctions -which we're not doing now.

Honestly, have you considered how much state and federal money is spent on illegals? Public school for the kids, health care, the grab-bag of entitlements (EBT, welfare, WIC, free school lunches, in-state tuition), the loss of tax revenue (for those who work under the table), etc. In addition there are costs to citizens with things like crimes committed by illegals (Mugging, rape, murder), drug trade's toll on communities (for MS-13, cartel illegals), the financial mess for people whose identities are stolen, people who are in traffic accidents w/uninsured illegals, the lack of revenue to state for various things like building permits, unpaid traffic tickets, etc.. And on and on.
Illegal immigration is *NOT* a victimless crime.

He forgot that the law has established mechanism and protections, that the police and the courts - at least in this country, and for at least the next two generations - tend to be hemmed in by the law itself.
It's all or nothing folks - either we arrest and deport every illegal alien by smashing down every door in the country ,either we use choppers and drones and interceptors to interdict every last person driving 26 in a 25 mph zone, or we're not enforcing the law.
And since maximal enforcement is absurd and dangerous, we can see why minimal enforcement is safer, and non-enforcement safest altogether.

Suppose a guy robs a convenience store. Definite crime. But that is the only crime he ever commits, and after that, he reforms his ways and no longer does anything criminal. Years and years go by and he is a productive member of society now. If the police later on finally catch him and want to throw him in jail, as a principled matter that is the correct thing to do, but as a practical matter, is that really the *best* use of scarce resources?
We don't need shock troops going door to door to root out every
illegal. There are numerous steps that could be made like making people
show their birth certificates for enrolling in schools, getting jobs,
etc. as well as a host of other things that could be done to make life
here exceedingly difficult for any illegal to be in the country.
I am fine with all of that, to the extent that it does not unduly burden actual citizens with onerous mandates. That is one of the fears I have with the whole illegal immigration, that if the Trumpist viewpoint gets its way, that the government will decide to crack down on illegal immigration *not necessarily* by making life more difficult for illegals, but by making life more difficult for *the rest of us*. Because, let's be honest, it is cheaper to just issue a mandate and expect everyone else to obey, than it is to hire and train new police officers to enforce the law.

No, the answer is just no. If you enter this country illegally there is no statute of limitations that makes you legal. You will always be illegal.
We all know that we are a country in serious trouble. Fiscally, morally, culturally, in just about ever way. One of the most obvious ways this shows is the attempt by many to just ignore laws they don't like. This is a recipe for disaster.

This example has absolutely nothing to do with illegal immigration. If you are here illegally and you are caught you should be deported and I do not care how long you've been here or where you came from. The cost of not enforcing immigration laws far outweigh the costs of obeying the law, fiscally, morally and culturally.

We have speed limits in this country, but of course, they are rarely enforced strictly.
Do you favor "enforcing the speed limit laws"? Doing what is necessary to crack down every last person who goes 1 mph over the speed limit? Because if you don't, you are opposed to the rule of law, you know....
Perhaps the costs might outweigh the benefits in this particular case?

I'm not opposed to enforcing speed limits. I realize it's not feasible to pull over everyone who speeds. But that's not the same as saying I'm totes cool with letting people drive 90 in a 50 zone and looking the other way when it happens, which is your position.
Now with speeding, the only way to catch speeders is put a cop with a radar gun on the highway. So by its very nature, unless we hire 10M cops to do nothing but pull people over, people will get away with speeding.
However, with illegals you don't need 10M USCIS cops going after illegals. All you have to do is make it really, really, really hard for an illegal to live here. That means, no licenses, no mortgage, no ability to rent an apartment, etc. You don't need to deport 30M people. They will deport themselves when living her becomes a total pain in the ass.

Okay let's consider these.
A Wall - I am only lukewarm about the wall. I think it would be more of a cronyist public works boondoggle than anything effective at stopping illegal immigration, especially since the biggest single source of illegal immigration is visa overstays, not by sneaking over the border.
E-Verify and Massive fines for employers hiring without verification - this is essentially an unfunded mandate placed on every single employer. Why should private businesses be the enforcement arm of the state?
Close sanctuary cities - I agree
no "path to citizenship" and no
benefits for illegals - I agree with the no benefits to illegals. I would be fine with a "path to citizenship" for a small subset of illegals once a lot of other conditions have been met first, including greater verifiable border security, but not until the.

I know my odds of getting pulled over are pretty low. But still I won't drive 90 in a 50, because I know IF I do het pulled over, I'll be in a world of hurt. I'll have a huge fine, maybe even jail time for reckless driving going that far over the limit.
But for illegals, it's basically, get pulled over going 90, spend 5 mins with the trooper who then says, please don't do this again, and lets you go. There is virtually no penalty for being here illegally and so, there is no disincentive for anyone to come over.

I'm not saying "do nothing". I'm saying that "enforce the law" is a position of principle that cannot be executed with 100% fidelity. That there will always be people who get away with breaking the law. We can spend more and more resources to try to catch more and more criminals, but at some point it reaches the point of diminishing returns. At THAT point, but not before, it's time to consider some form of limited amnesty, I think. It is the same idea as tax amnesty when it comes to tax cheats and the like.

I need a lawn mower. I can't believe how fast that green shit grows. We can't really afford something new, (and I don't want new anyway), but the few decent used riding mowers we've seen are way too expensive. In one case, one guy was offering his 20+ year old generic riding mower for 650 dollars. It was worth that much, according to him, because it worked.
There is a mower here that predates us, a self propelled push mower, but it is a wreck. I managed to tease it into life for a bit, but it has serious issues. So lawn mower shopping is on the menu for tomorrow.

I wen the used route with a riding mower too. You get what you pay for. If it's relatively new, say 5 years or less, you're better off getting a new one since the price difference isn't that much and you have a warranty with a new one.
Older ones are still not that cheap. $500 is a bare minimum for anything. And even then if it works, it's like an old car....you buy it cheap, but shit breaks all the time.
I gave in this year and bought a new one.

Thanks Golfman. There are two places not far from me that we're going to visit tomorrow. We borrowed the neighbor lady's, (with the chickens), and it's self propelled, rear wheel drive. Damn thing pulls so hard, it drags me around, heh.

I'm helping a friend bring a boat back from Bermuda. I had to get a letter from him complete with information on his boats documentation to enter Bermuda because I am arriving on a one-way ticket. I then have to clear customs when I return in the harbor, I can not leave the boat before clearing or I run the risk of run of getting sideways with the border security.

Back in the CompuServe days, on Religion Forum, there was a disruptive fellow from a Christian-ish sect. He was tolerated for a long time, many thought too long. Some time after he was banned from Religion Forum, I ran across him in some computer-specific or gamer forum (I forget which) and saw him holding forth in an ordinary, personable way.
Funny how people have their froth-at-the-mouth trigger subjects but can otherwise seem balanced and sociable.
(Which reminds me: family reunion coming up this weekend. Oboy!)

For all my seasonal gas engines I only use the non ethanol gas that is a little spendy but well worth the extra cost. Having to rebuild the carbs biannually was a pain in the ass.
The Kwik Trip near me sells it.

Fix the one you have. Parts are quite cheap. Give the engine a valve grind, and set the valve clearance. It will need to be done, because ethanol "enhanced" fuel is hard on small engine valves. But it's easy to do. If it's an older engine with ignition points in it, you can buy a module for a few dollars to upgrade to electronic ignition.
