Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid-Morning Open Thread [CBD]This was sent to me by OregonMuse (The Book Pimp), presumably as a farcical presentation of an insufficiently evolved interpretation of Native American hunting techniques. Obviously this cannot be accurate, because as we all know, the entirety of the Native American experience is respectful of nature and is on a higher plane of consciousness, with its holistic connection to the earth. It is unthinkable that any Native American tribe would be so disrespectful of nature's bounty that they would wantonly slaughter the innocent bison. In fact, it is now clear that this is a micro-aggression, so any of you who require a safe space may click on this link....Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Native American hunting is much more civilized now, states like Wisconsin provide them special dispensation unavailable to other hunters to drive out in their trucks and four-wheelers, spotlight deer with ultra-high-powered lights in the middle of the night, and then drop them with modern centerfire rifles. Very respectful, very traditional.

Were this painting completely historically accurate, there would be another panel to it, panorama-style, depicting the aftermath of this hunt:
1,000 carcasses rotting in the sun and the Injuns decamping to go raid their nearest rival tribe's village to kidnap new squaws to fuck and satisfy their post-hunt bloodlust, leaving only a handful of properly skinned and parted out bison corpses. And 300 acres of scorched prairie. Sharkman rates this painting's accuracy at 3 teepees out of 5. Posted by: Sharkman at June 07, 2016 10:08 AM (u/afm) 46

From the last thread: 381 Interesting study on immigration, assimilation, and political ideology: http://tinyurl.com/zja6xht I'll just quote from the conclusion: Immigrants have very similar political and policy views when compared to fourth-generation Americans. For those policy and political questions where first-generation immigrants have statistically significant differences of opinions, the second and third generations do not vary compared to the fourth generation, meaning that political assimilation is complete by the second generation. Those are illegal invaders from Mongolia and Siberia.
They forced their way here illegally when the water barrier between the continents was temporarily dried up. That's why they won't allow autopsies or research into the ancient dead corpses that people sometimes dig up. They don't want anyone to know that they came here less than 20,000 years ago and started killing and destroying the native species. Love the commentary supplied when you click the painting. The author describes the painting as basically reflective of reality with some innacuracies.
One of the innacuracies? One of the Indians is using a woman's pack saddle rather than riding bareback. The commenter even reveals that a short cliff such as is shown is called a "buffalo jump", which tells you all you need to know about how commonly this hunting practice was utilized. Despite depicting something as wasteful as this, the painter still believed that Indian culture was far superior to that of whites and that their lives represented unfettered freedom. Rather, of course, than just another tribe of humans being just as human as any other group of people in Earth's savage history. I think the only thing the artist could have added to this piece to make it more accurate would have been some smallpox infected blankets. I'm not sure it can be quantified, but it's undeniable that social order does develop over time. The politics of California, for example, render a Reagan impossible today, and all that has really changed is demography. We used to call that 'deportation force' Immigration officers.
That isn't what Trump said. He said "deportation force". Trump was pressed for specifics on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" by co-host Mika Brzezinski, who asked if he would have a "massive deportation force.""You're going to have a deportation force, and you're going to do it humanely," Trump said. "Don't forget, Mika, that you have millions of people that are waiting in line to come into this country and they're waiting to come in legally. And I always say the wall, we're going to build the wall. It's going to be a real deal. It's going to be a real wall." http://tinyurl.com/zrytrk3 So what exactly is this "deportation force"? Actually I think Trump walked into a gotcha question from Mika, and then as usual, stupid oozed from his mouth in trying to answer it. So, we don't deport. See, no one here is arguing this position. I'm all in favor of deporting recent illegals. I'm not in favor of some dragnet force that goes house to house trying to hunt down every last one, particularly ones who have been here a long time and are being productive people. And that is one of the frustrating parts of this discussion. It's similar to what Sexypig was doing yesterday on the "Trump and the judge" thread when he/she was going on about Italian-American Bar Associations and Irish American Bar Associations and so on. Anywho...as one who hopes to wed an immigrant, and who enjoyed through young adulthood talking with my relatives from the old country, I'll offer these observations:
1) You can have the welfare state, or you can have immigration. Pick one; 2) It is useless and embarrassing to argue that immigrants - especially the post '65 masses from the Third World - do not in all respects correspond in terms of culture, habits of life, and political traditions, with the traditional character of the citizenry of the United States who arrived before, say, the '20's or '30's; 3) Differences in travel, communications, and the like, have made it possible for a recent immigrant to remain in more or less regular, if not constant, contact with his homeland and its culture and habits of thought. My angel came here in '78, and the only communication with the place they left was by letter, which took weeks to months; the same was true for my own families' immigrants. That really is all that needs to be said. "Rigor". "Deportation force". Let's add a few: "self-awareness" and "irony". Words that have perfectly good, specific meanings (that you and many others cannot seem to understand), are "slurs". If you don't understand that enforcement of laws is required for them to be effective, and that anything other than full enforcement of immigration law and return to rule of law in related matters internally guarantees (guarantees) exacerbation of the current situation - probably massively so - then you are not a serious person. At least on this huge issue. And the "study" you reference is most likely meaningless (aside from whatever utility it has anyway - how are political views measured ..... is it just another "Fox News viewers LESS informed!" bit of garbage?). So places that are now dominated by racism and authoritarianism and lawlessness and rent-seeking in "governance" - CA, for example - that are also without exception the states with the largest immigrant populations (recent, longer ago, legal, illegal) will ..... stay that way. We can do what everyone else does: foreigners carry their passports everywhere and produce them on demand. Without a valid visa they cannot rent hotel rooms and apartments, and certainly cannot enter i to contracts like mortgages. Without valid work papers they cannot work.
This policy works everywhere else in the world, and will obviously work here. Except you have sanctuary cities, Section 8 housing, WIC, SNAP, Food Stamps, SSDI, etc. Posted by: rickb223 at June 07, 2016 10:55 AM (LwB8i) 285
By the way, businesses are obligated by law to check every citizenship claim before hiring anyone. Seasonal workers are treated differently, but most illegals in my town are working casual labor. Great people, I will say, so I hope once tbe law is enforced they can find room to stay.

See, no one here is arguing this position. I'm all in favor of deporting recent illegals. I'm not in favor of some dragnet force that goes house to house trying to hunt down every last one, particularly ones who have been here a long time and are being productive people.
How long is a "long time?" 2 years? 30? With the consequence of your proposal here being, of course, an incentive that if an illegal can escape notice for a period of time then he's home free. And that incents other people to try it. Kind of like the way people keep playing the Powerball. Enforce the law or forget about it. At the hardware store Sunday and ran into an old neighbor. Immigrants from Yugoslavia, worked hard on their citizenship (sciencey types). We both got a little teary and nostalgic about the fun we all had with our kids. They moved to the 'rich' section of town, but are thinking of moving back into our older neighborhood of starter homes. For the immigrants who work hard, work on citizenship, and enjoy and appreciate their lives in the USA, I say wonderful.

But, to go with 'speeding' - it is possible to speed without meaning to, without realizing it; there are even circumstances under the law in which violation of the local speed limits is permissible. One of the simpler tactics is to lead someone deeper into the weeds by parsing out all of the trivial exceptions to a general statement. It blunts a person's point that way. It's similar to what Sexypig was doing yesterday on the "Trump and the judge" thread when he/she was going on about Italian-American Bar Associations and Irish American Bar Associations and so on. It is best to just stick to your conclusion and let that person go off on his own blathering on in his sophistry about exceptions and codicils and so forth. chemjeff, lay off the NPR. I say that because you bring the opposite of "rigor" to any public policy discussion, and use idiotic Beltway make-believe terms like "polarizing". Such "concepts" are for unserious emoting know-nothings, not for people who actually care about freedom, people's welfare, and principles.
Or maybe it's that you just can't reason logically (outside chemistry). For the billionth time, enforcement of immigration law used to be done routinely, whenever there was contact with the state, or the legal system, or aspects of the private economy that are highly regulated. Open a checking account. Get pulled over for speeding. Register your kids for local school. Apply for a job. On, and on, and on. And, for known concentrations of illegals, like certain industries, of course targeted enforcement actions. It only takes a few. For the billionth time, educate yourself about what happened in just a few months in AZ after they passed an enforcement-enhancement law. Just changing the body english of the state/State on this matter produces instant, dramatic results. Of course. Oh - and for the other bizarre AOSHQ myth on a related matter - that border barriers don't work. Yes they do. Of course they do. And of course - obviously - they are a key part of a comprehensive restoration of rule of law. Leaving aside entirely the huge security issue they address. But - enough. It's all a lost cause, America is hopelessly crippled by what can only be called the stupidity of the bulk of its citizens. And their descent into infantile moral narcissism. You now in favor of finding every wetback and tossing their ass out? If not, sod off. Posted by: rickb223 at June 07, 2016 10:56 AM (LwB8i) Ha. I really doubt that you are. But if you are, then this would require either one of two things, or probably both actually: 1. gigantic tax increases to pay for all of the new police officers to track down all of the speeders. All of those police officers will wind up hassling people who aren't doing anything terribly wrong, except going 66 mph in a 65 mph zone, and will lead to all sorts of other interactions with police, which will inevitably erode further our search-and-seizure protections of the fourth amendment. 2. mandates that the government imposes on *law-abiding* citizens to prove that we *aren't* one of those speeders. Similar to the breathalyzer devices that are now mandated to be placed on the cars of repeat drunk drivers. Because the government really can't catch every last criminal, the government will instead force everyone to obey by limiting their liberties in other ways. They do this sort of thing now with gun laws, force everyone to prove they *aren't* criminals instead of the government proving that a potential buyer *is* a criminal. And I am jealous enough of my own liberties that I don't want to see any more of them eroded in the name of tracking down a problem that is, in the grand scheme of things, not all that serious. I see the issue analogously when it comes to illegal immigration. Of course we increase border security and of course we crack down on visa overstays and of course we do a better job of enforcing the law. But going to extended lengths in order to track down every last one is just foolish and counterproductive. We wouldn't do that for any other law on the books, not even the most heinous ones. We have unsolved murders and rapes on the books you know. Deportations wouldn't be necessary in most cases. Simply eliminating sanctuary cities, laws preventing cops from finding out about legal status, enforcing existing immigration laws, and cracking down on businesses hiring illegals would take care of the bulk of the problem.
You'll never eliminate illegal immigration, particularly in a nation with borders as huge as the USA. But the current situation is insanely out of control and must be dialed back. Immigration and citizenship laws exist for good reasons, and only internationalist jackwagons think otherwise. They need to be enforced for orderly structure of culture and society. I am honestly in favor of deportations in general, but I don't want to deport any actual persons because there might be political fallout from that.
So I'm not going to favor deporting anyone in actuality and when questioned I'll find some libertarian economic policy for justifying not deporting that person while strongly stating that I am in favor of deportation in general. Is that so hard to understand? Its just good politics. Posted by: chemjeph at June 07, 2016 11:11 AM (10hEu) 367

Okay, I'll answer it - of course not.
Don't be absurd. But when a person is speeding, and is caught in the act, surely, something ought to be done? But this is all foolishness. Ask yourself what is the purpose of speed limit laws, and what is the purpose of immigration laws? The answers to those are the key to the whole matter, and show the two simply are not comparable as categories of legislation. Of course the two have different purposes, but the point of my raising the analogy is to illustrate the absurdity of trying to "enforce the law" without any considerations to cost or benefits. We don't even do that for the most serious criminal acts like murder and rape. Posted by: chemjeff at June 07, 2016 11:16 AM (uAvJJ) 397

Given we don't do what the law already requires, on what possible basis do you posit the fever-dream of going 'to extended lengths' to track down every last one? But I think I get it. Personal liberty is a value, and a very great one. Of course, your chosen method - in this instance - of guarding your liberty has the disadvantage of permitting the fundamental transformation of the polity the traditions of which protected it by the simple expedient of allowing persons not raised in those traditions to become - nationally - a substantial plurality - and, in many areas of high immigration of all types - very nearly a political majority. But I'm sure that traditions and culture have very little to do with politics, so no worries. And if CATO are wrong, well, we won't know it for two generations, four, tops. So there's that. Maybe this will help differentiate between illegals and every other lawbreaker in the world. By his very presence inside the borders of America the illegal is a lawbreaker. That is starkly different than even the most recalcitrant drunk driver, who is not always breaking the law. So....every single contact with officialdom is an opportunity to identify and deal with the illegal, unlike the other lawbreakers you cite. It is a canard that it will cost too much. Could ask Hillary. It was her hubby who had his AG send out the troops to capture that dangerous Elian Gonzalez so she should know. Seriously, this is getting silly. It's called illegal immigration because it's, wait for it, illegal. No amount of time magically makes it not illegal. We don't need shock troops going door to door to root out every illegal. There are numerous steps that could be made like making people show their birth certificates for enrolling in schools, getting jobs, etc. as well as a host of other things that could be done to make life here exceedingly difficult for any illegal to be in the country. Would you get all of them? Probably not. But it would be a monstrous step in the right direction. Nobody is allowed to be in Mexico or other countries illegally, what possible logic could you be using to justify any of them being here illegally regardless of how long they have been here? one would make the same cost/benefit analysis with regards to any other law. Honestly, have you considered how much state and federal money is spent on illegals? Public school for the kids, health care, the grab-bag of entitlements (EBT, welfare, WIC, free school lunches, in-state tuition), the loss of tax revenue (for those who work under the table), etc. In addition there are costs to citizens with things like crimes committed by illegals (Mugging, rape, murder), drug trade's toll on communities (for MS-13, cartel illegals), the financial mess for people whose identities are stolen, people who are in traffic accidents w/uninsured illegals, the lack of revenue to state for various things like building permits, unpaid traffic tickets, etc.. And on and on. Illegal immigration is *NOT* a victimless crime. Posted by: Lizzy at June 07, 2016 11:33 AM (NOIQH) 486

A cache of rare silver coins from the Hasmonean period, more than 2,000 years ago, has been discovered in the Modi'in area, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced Tuesday.
The director of the excavation, Avraham Tendler, said "The cache may have belonged to a Jew who hid his money in the hope of coming back to collect it, but he was unlucky and never did return." The coins from approximately 126 B.C.E. were discovered in April hidden in a rock crevice in an agricultural estate that was discovered during an excavation being carried out before construction of a new neighborhood began. Seriously, this is getting silly. It's called illegal immigration
because it's, wait for it, illegal. No amount of time magically makes it not illegal. Well, yes and no. Suppose a guy robs a convenience store. Definite crime. But that is the only crime he ever commits, and after that, he reforms his ways and no longer does anything criminal. Years and years go by and he is a productive member of society now. If the police later on finally catch him and want to throw him in jail, as a principled matter that is the correct thing to do, but as a practical matter, is that really the *best* use of scarce resources? We don't need shock troops going door to door to root out every illegal. There are numerous steps that could be made like making people show their birth certificates for enrolling in schools, getting jobs, etc. as well as a host of other things that could be done to make life here exceedingly difficult for any illegal to be in the country. I am fine with all of that, to the extent that it does not unduly burden actual citizens with onerous mandates. That is one of the fears I have with the whole illegal immigration, that if the Trumpist viewpoint gets its way, that the government will decide to crack down on illegal immigration *not necessarily* by making life more difficult for illegals, but by making life more difficult for *the rest of us*. Because, let's be honest, it is cheaper to just issue a mandate and expect everyone else to obey, than it is to hire and train new police officers to enforce the law. . . . . . . Answer: All of them because they're illegal. The very fact that you entered this country illegally makes you a criminal import. Here, have some welfare and a voter ballot. Posted by: CrustyB at June 07, 2016 11:51 AM (GvSpB) 546
>>Well, yes and no.
No, the answer is just no. If you enter this country illegally there is no statute of limitations that makes you legal. You will always be illegal. We all know that we are a country in serious trouble. Fiscally, morally, culturally, in just about ever way. One of the most obvious ways this shows is the attempt by many to just ignore laws they don't like. This is a recipe for disaster. This example has absolutely nothing to do with illegal immigration. If you are here illegally and you are caught you should be deported and I do not care how long you've been here or where you came from. The cost of not enforcing immigration laws far outweigh the costs of obeying the law, fiscally, morally and culturally. Posted by: JackStraw at June 07, 2016 11:51 AM (/tuJf) 547

Wait, so "enforce the law" does not really mean "enforce the law"?
Posted by: chemjeff -------------- In most states, possession of illegal drugs is, well, illegal. The laws are enforced. The door-to-door searches, not so much. A person found to be in possession of such are prosecuted. A person found to be illegal should be the same deal. Simple. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at June 07, 2016 11:53 AM (9mTYi) 557
Well then, let's use a simpler example.
We have speed limits in this country, but of course, they are rarely enforced strictly. Do you favor "enforcing the speed limit laws"? Doing what is necessary to crack down every last person who goes 1 mph over the speed limit? Because if you don't, you are opposed to the rule of law, you know.... Perhaps the costs might outweigh the benefits in this particular case? If you are not in favor of tracking down every last speeder, would that make you opposed to the rule of law? Posted by: chemjeff at June 07, 2016 10:51 AM (uAvJJ) ____ I'm not opposed to enforcing speed limits. I realize it's not feasible to pull over everyone who speeds. But that's not the same as saying I'm totes cool with letting people drive 90 in a 50 zone and looking the other way when it happens, which is your position. Now with speeding, the only way to catch speeders is put a cop with a radar gun on the highway. So by its very nature, unless we hire 10M cops to do nothing but pull people over, people will get away with speeding. However, with illegals you don't need 10M USCIS cops going after illegals. All you have to do is make it really, really, really hard for an illegal to live here. That means, no licenses, no mortgage, no ability to rent an apartment, etc. You don't need to deport 30M people. They will deport themselves when living her becomes a total pain in the ass. Posted by: Monsieur Moo Moo at June 07, 2016 11:53 AM (0LHZx) 558

a wall, e-verify, massive fines for employers hiring without verification, close sanctuary cities, no "path to citizenship" and no benefits for illegals; problem solved Posted by: runner at June 07, 2016 11:42 AM (c6/9Q) Okay let's consider these. A Wall - I am only lukewarm about the wall. I think it would be more of a cronyist public works boondoggle than anything effective at stopping illegal immigration, especially since the biggest single source of illegal immigration is visa overstays, not by sneaking over the border. E-Verify and Massive fines for employers hiring without verification - this is essentially an unfunded mandate placed on every single employer. Why should private businesses be the enforcement arm of the state? Close sanctuary cities - I agree no "path to citizenship" and no benefits for illegals - I agree with the no benefits to illegals. I would be fine with a "path to citizenship" for a small subset of illegals once a lot of other conditions have been met first, including greater verifiable border security, but not until the. Plus ChemmJeff,
I know my odds of getting pulled over are pretty low. But still I won't drive 90 in a 50, because I know IF I do het pulled over, I'll be in a world of hurt. I'll have a huge fine, maybe even jail time for reckless driving going that far over the limit. But for illegals, it's basically, get pulled over going 90, spend 5 mins with the trooper who then says, please don't do this again, and lets you go. There is virtually no penalty for being here illegally and so, there is no disincentive for anyone to come over. Posted by: Monsieur Moo Moo at June 07, 2016 11:56 AM (0LHZx) 562

It is a mistake, Aristotle teaches, to expect of all sciences the precision encountered in geometry. This is wisdom, this is true. The law, as an intellectual and practical matter, is not subject to the strictures imposed on, let us say, mathematical, geometrical, and other sciences, precisely because that with which it concerns itself - man and his actions - is not itself subject to them. Stick to chemistry - it has the precision and rigor you seek - but do not imagine that its standards, or the standards of any other science, are applicable tot he standards of any other. as the Philosopher says, we do not say that an architect is a poor one because the stones of his buildings do not match the fit and precision of the stones of a gemcutter. I'm not saying "do nothing". I'm saying that "enforce the law" is a position of principle that cannot be executed with 100% fidelity. That there will always be people who get away with breaking the law. We can spend more and more resources to try to catch more and more criminals, but at some point it reaches the point of diminishing returns. At THAT point, but not before, it's time to consider some form of limited amnesty, I think. It is the same idea as tax amnesty when it comes to tax cheats and the like. Posted by: chemjeff at June 07, 2016 12:01 PM (uAvJJ) _______ Dude you are either obtuse or just being an asshole. Everyone knows that no system is 100% efficient. No matter what we do, there will be some illegals who enter the country and stay here. But your solution is do nothing. Ours is do something and hope to get 60, 70, 80% of them to either go home. Yet your answer to every solution is, "well it won't work because it's not perfect". It's the most intellectually lazy argument out there. I need a lawn mower. I can't believe how fast that green shit grows. We can't really afford something new, (and I don't want new anyway), but the few decent used riding mowers we've seen are way too expensive. In one case, one guy was offering his 20+ year old generic riding mower for 650 dollars. It was worth that much, according to him, because it worked.
There is a mower here that predates us, a self propelled push mower, but it is a wreck. I managed to tease it into life for a bit, but it has serious issues. Apropos of somebody maybe:
Back in the CompuServe days, on Religion Forum, there was a disruptive fellow from a Christian-ish sect. He was tolerated for a long time, many thought too long. Nobody cared if he promulgated his own theology. But, he couldn't resist jumping deeply into practically every discussion with his "you're wrong, I'm right" hustling. There were others of his sect who were not so pushy. Wasn't the sect; it was him. Some time after he was banned from Religion Forum, I ran across him in some computer-specific or gamer forum (I forget which) and saw him holding forth in an ordinary, personable way. Funny how people have their froth-at-the-mouth trigger subjects but can otherwise seem balanced and sociable. (Which reminds me: family reunion coming up this weekend. Oboy!) Here's an experiment (which I conduct on myself when I think I may be getting too worked up about something_- stay here but avoid talking about Trump or immigration for 30 days. If you can do it, great you're probably not nuts. If you can't, well...you may be one fork short of a place setting...and need to reassess things. I'm bored with immigration and the #nevertards.

There is a mower here that predates us, a self propelled push mower, but it is a wreck. I managed to tease it into life for a bit, but it has serious issues. So lawn mower shopping is on the menu for tomorrow.
Again, bleh. Posted by: Sticky Wicket at June 07, 2016 12:04 PM (i2t8l) Fix the one you have. Parts are quite cheap. Give the engine a valve grind, and set the valve clearance. It will need to be done, because ethanol "enhanced" fuel is hard on small engine valves. But it's easy to do. If it's an older engine with ignition points in it, you can buy a module for a few dollars to upgrade to electronic ignition. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 07, 2016 01:27 PM (GSdpU) 683
