All of the running gear of the P-71, but with plush, LX standard, non-police interior. Some oddball units were built with plush front half, fiberglass prisoner-bench rear seat, and those are exceedingly rare.
If you live in wide open Western spaces, you might consider dropping a standard LX rear axle into the mix....taller gear ratio. Not as strong off the line, but you're basically running just above idle at 65 mph, and 2,000 rpm will get you well into the mid to upper 70s of mph.
Another good trick is to get all the exterior trim bits from an LX, and de-police the look of the car. Much more the sleeper, that way.
Inside baseball for the Crown Vic. '03 onward are the ones to get. They put a good multi-link rear suspension around the live axle, and basically a Mercedes clone of front end geometry. Handles far better than the older ones, which were no slouch in their own right.
Once I don't need an F-150 for work, hell, I might try to find a good, late production Vic or Grand Marquis. Still one of the best road cars, ever.

This cuts both ways. I can get a good older car for next to nothing and parts are cheaper. 5k buys a lot of gas currently so millage isn't a concern. Comfort,reliability and safety are advantages to newer if one puts those at the top.

And it will bloody haul ass. Lot of empty space and the donk will spin some RPMs, but it will go.

Cool video about props. Got a couple things wrong though - to be nit picky, "props" refers to anything actually used by an actor. (Most) Everything else would be set dressing. So, the horse head in the bed (that's fun to say) would be set dressing. Set Dec would come in and dress the bed with blood and position the head where it worked best on camera, then the actor would be placed in. These lines become blurry when theres multiple similar things in a scene, but the same rule applies. In It's A Wonderful Life, the ornament the little girl plays with would be a prop, but all the others on the tree would be set dressing (along with the tree). This seems like overkill, but Props and Set Dec are too entirely different departments, so the distinction becomes important for knowing who's responsible for what.

Odyssey has a variable cylinder engine. If you drive it right 22-25mpg is possible. If your aggressive or herky jerky like my wife 19 is good.

The Cheif's car though, had the crushed mouse-fur, fake velour, absolutely non-police split bench seats, with armrests in the middle, and the power seat controls up on the door panel. Also, the same, plush, non-industrial carpet of the non-police car. We're talkin' old man and granny appointed interior, not Buford T. Justice and his ilk.
Most of 'em had the plush going into the back seat area, too. But if you find one of those rare examples of the plush-in-front-fiberglass-in-back oddballs, buy it if it's a good unit. They're rare.
There are some good online forums for the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis platforms, with contributors as sharp at their craft as the Morons are here, with the various skills and professions represented here.
I know that EPA mileage regs killed the platform, but I wish Ford would've found a way to have kept it alive.

Just want to point out here that there are millions of ordinary citizens who own vehicles not made to deal with anything over 10% ethanol, and whose engine warranties will not be honored by the manufacturers if any 15% ethanol fuel is used. Ever. Even once.
But if you can't find anything OTHER than 15% ethanol at the pump? Thanks to federal mandates?
That's on you. The warranty is cancelled. No recourse.

Seriously, I learned the hard way about ethanol. It don't sit up too well over several months compared to regular gasoline in trucks and other shit that we don't use much every day. Bad! as someone would say.
Make gasoline great again. Build a damn wall to keep the ethanol out.

The 08s are taxis and are leased out for weekly cash. The 03 is my driver.
The 2011 is in storage as it was the last year made and I got it from a PD that was trying to lure in a new Chief. They ordered him a P71 with carpet and leather, a sunroof, full electronics and all the power goodies. He went elsewhere. I got it at auction with 22k miles after a City Manager drove it for a year.
All of mine are Chiefs cars. Full carpet, cloth benches front and back.

Once the fuel is injected into the cylinders of the engine, a fundamental problem remains, which is that ethanol is a solvent which washes away engine oil from the cylinder walls, accelerating frictional wear and shortening the life of the motor.
Needless to say, to Our Betters, this is a feature and not a bug. They want for the serf class to be forced to purchase replacement vehicles more often.

They'd put us all in planned communities, designed by the leftist lunatic intellectual class, and our transportation would be scooters or something. It would also be based on who was the most oppressed. The more oppressed get the best transportation available, which won't be much.

At that time, the engines were (for weight and performance reasons) air cooled Porsche flat sixes with no mufflers on the exhausts.
He wished he'd taken some earplugs and/or earmuffs along.
Don't know if they have changed to quieter propulsion since then.

Christmas was 5 months+ optimistic - but finally we have Rome. Elements of the 85th Div entered the Eternal City at 0830 this morning. Since then there has been one mad scramble in that direction. Some of the 36 Div doughboys "hoofed" over 12 miles to reach the town. By 1800 we had tanks around the Vatican to protect it. Gerry had a great number of troops and a lot of vehicles in the trap. It is questionable just how many he will retrieve. Both II Corps and VI Corps are pressing the advance to the maximum. On the lower front the Fifth and Eighth Armies joined behind the little salient still occupied by remnants of two Gerry Divisions. The PW count is now well over 7000 for VI Corps. The speed of our advance today was almost unbelievable. This is what we have been waiting and working for. With our troops and equipment we should be able to exploit it completely.

A venture capitalist here in the Bay Area signed a contract to have one come do air tourism around the region, and it was based at Moffett Field on the north edge of Silicon Valley. A base originally constructed with airships in mind, and which boasts three enormous hangars meant for U.S. Navy airships of the 1930s.
I flew home into SFO and the routing took the flight directly over Moffett, with the new high-tech Zeppelin moored there outdoors. It was weird. Something out of the William Gibson short _The Gernsback Continuum_.
Also later watched it fly overhead. It is huge and very quiet. The only clue I had was the shadow it cast. Sharper-edged and darker than that of a cloud.

It's a '95, which I bought secondhand, late in '95. 134K miles on it now. The only non-normal wear & tear item has been an alternator. I think I paid $39.95 for a reman part.
I keep waiting for the water pump or clutch to fail (knocks on wood), but so far, the cost of ownership has been super low. Gas mileage sucks.

There are limits to how big a blimp can be; these were discovered rather hilariously back in the 1890s when someone built a nonrigid about 400 feet long. There are old films of it somewhere: the front starts taking off before the back is even out of the hangar and it just gets worse from there.
So putting the girders on does give it extra strength.

Boeing was going to build a modern Zepp in the 90's with a rigid composite skin to allow for less inner strutting. The proposed end user was either the USN or coast guard, they were seen as extra good because of the long loiter time.
Supposedly the specs called for being able to mount .50 Brownings, and Boeing would only commit to .30s or some such issue so the program was scrapped.
Still, it would have been glorious to be the .50 door gunner on a Zeppelin

We've owned this house for almost 20 years, but just installed AC about 3-4 years ago. We ran it today.
Normally, we use a whole-house fan and do what we call "crossover" -- when the outside temperature is better than the inside, open certain windows and use whole-house fan to cool house (about 7 pm). When the outside temperature is worse than the inside, cut the fan and button everything up (about 9 am).

It made good torque, as mentioned above. But it was never a popular engine in the F-250/350. For what extra torque it made, it did so not on the lower end of the tach, like a diesel, but in the midrange, which meant a downshift or towing with the overdrive "off".
The V-10 demanded it's oil changes, timing belt service and other scheduled maintenance. And accessing the spark plugs back under the cowl and up against the firewall? Hire a B-24 midget riveter, he'll have a better chance at them.
When they don't break off, leaving the threaded end of the plug stuck in the heads. (early 5.4 V-8s had the same problem)
Conversely, it was wildly popular as a Recreational Vehicle powerplant, where low MPG was a given regardless of engine.
It'll make the power. But it's not a friendly engine to own and operate.
Chevy's 454 had a shorter service lifespan, rebuilds on those are routine at about 90k miles. But, up until rebuild time, they were damn near bombproof.
If Ford would make an Eco-Boost 5.0 V-8 truck engine, they'd beat the Dodge Eco-Diesel at it's own game.

He basically doesn't believe there's anything anyone can do to stop the tide of liberalism, no matter where you go, not even Texas. Sure, he says, you can go where traditional values are more valued, but he believes the welfare mentality is just too good for too many people to pass up.
He could be right, and I am a bit of a Pollyanna. Sure hope he's wrong though, and I tried to make the argument that people will at least vote with their feet to places with values they share.
I guess what it boils down to, is that he doesn't believe the right will ever have any serious cultural sway again. Again, I really hope he's wrong; so does he.

An I6 will kick a V6 in torque. Jeep had the perfect motor in their I6 Well tested bulletproof and great int the woods. The V6 Temptress screwed that up though. I may be wrong but I don't think Jeep offers the I6 anymore.

Back in the day (early 80s), I was working as a computer consultant. Things were more complicated, then, and you had to deal with crazy things sometimes. One of the things was that computers were substantially more reliable if you formatted their hard drives within about 10 degrees of their usual operating temperature. I had a client's hard drive fail during a heatwave -- I got the parts and the backups together, and knew their office was typically AC'd to about 70 degrees....my apartment didn't hit 80 degrees until 4:30 in the morning. I delivered them a system that could cut AP checks the next morning at 8 am, but I was soooooo trashed.

Wife is an E-7 she's been a platoon Sgt, she has to do risk management surveys and they DEMAND she submit one for variable events including heat spikes, hail, etc etc....
so your unit is out playing GI Joe Super Soldier on the ranges...
and along comes O-1 Wile E Coyote who decides FUCK IT YOLO! and orders you to do something without analysis....
then you have to pray the O-3 who cleans up the mess doesn't decide it is YOUR fault you let Wile E Coyote gets his ACME on.
I suspect there was some YOLO at play.

Truck towing another truck.
Front wheels on towing dolly, driveshaft U joint disconnected at the differential, and the shaft safely secured to a frame member, or pulled altogether and loaded into the bed of one of the trucks.
The rear wheels on the ground can not, must not, turn a driveshaft that is still connected to the transmission. Even a manual transmission.
Without the engine powered fluid pumps pumping fluid, things go awry in the the tranny when back-fed power via the driveshaft.
You could get away with a 10 mile tow. A hundred mile tow is gonna mess things up unless you pull the shaft.
Then, keep in mind you're towing an equal or greater gross weight to the towing vehicle. With only one set of working brakes between 'em.
Keep the speed down, following distances long, plan way, way ahead, and don't be in a hurry.

We had to resort to placing MPs on either side of Cow House Creek to prevent soldiers in the field from killing themselves during the rains; the blockades weren't sufficient. But to do it safely for the stopping after you find out going works. Trailer brakes. Trucks can tow heavy loads but stopping them without assistance is another story. I have a brake controller for my car hauler trailer in my truck under the dash. So trailer with brakes and front truck set op with controls.

If I needed a used truck with some power, I'd get a Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins, between 2003 - 2007. 2003 was the first year they had the quiet diesels; 2007 was the last year the 5.9 was available.

Our unit SOPs stated that if you got caught out there by unexpected weather, you stayed in place until told to move. We always had comm links established with our troops in the field. And we always had leadership out there with the troops...the last thing we needed was a 19 year old making life and death decisions.
The III Corps Commander is in the ME right now; the statements made yesterday were by the Deputy III Corps Commander. The 1st CAV commander was noticeably absent. He has some 'splaining to do too.
The old axiom remains true to this day: A unit only does well those things the Commander checks.

I checked the fuel in my tractor this morning. No gauge, so you have to dip the tank. I used a handy jack handle as a dipstick. One eighth of an inch of Diesel on the handle! Time to fill 'er up, so I did. So I was at the local service station filling my yellow 5-gallon can with Diesel, and a guy pulls up to the pump in a Chevy sedan, and is about to fill his tank off the other hose on the same pump. And, given his greatness as a boxer and his often amusing banter, I think the controversies receded from memory ---which is probably just as well.

Had a nice enough day, though. Milady and I and Defender Doggie* went down to visit my mom. (*She calls him her GrandDog.)
We had a nice dinner, nice wine, talked about the world today, and yesterday - politics, film, music, and crazy relatives. That was good.
Mom uses a walker, most of the time, to be on the safe side, but gets around pretty briskly. Was working a Sodoku when we got there. Helped her finish a word puzzle - not like she needed any help. (Crossword was already done.) She has a little arthritis in her thumb sometimes, she says. Told her, face it, you're gonna start getting old one of these decades. She's doing all right for turning 96 later this month.
Man, I hope I got that survival chromosome.

Maryland and Delaware were slave states --- and remained so until the 13th amendment was passed, well after the war.
The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 only applied to Confederate States, not to Union ones like MD, KY, DE, etc.
Slavery was legal in DC until Congress passed an emancipation bill for the District in 1862.

Considering how awful he looked at 61, in 2003, I'm not at all surprised.
This was an E3 press event for Microsoft's Xbox. One of the big deal parts of the presentation was that they'd finally reached an agreement with EA to have online multiplayer support. EA wanted their own online empire and amazingly thought console makers were just going to let them take over the platform.
As part of the presentation they trotted out a bunch of prominent pro athletes who were featured in the upcoming batch of games. The last to step out was Ali, a mere shadow of his former self. If you had no idea who he was and someone told you he was in his eighties, you'd have had no reason not to believe it. He was shrunken and trembling severely. I noticed the young players to each side of him kept nervously glancing to be ready to grab him in case he collapsed. He made it through the presentation and got a big standing ovation but a lot of us were severely creeped out as well. It always comes to mind when the subject of cumulative injuries among pro athletes comes up on the news. It also makes you wonder about some superhero characters who have been knocked unconscious countless times and taken even more blows to the head.

Eh, they replace them when they have done X number of miles, or kilometers, as the case may be. I have two ex-government Suburbans in my fleet, one ex-cop, and one an ex-lighthouse keeper truck. Both are damned good rigs, and have had next to zero reliability issues. Brakes and tires, and batteries.
The only reason I have not bid on one of those ex-cop Crown Vics is that I really don't need one, although I'm sure it would be fun to have.

For those who don't know the SCA or found out about them last week, the story is that there was a tourney where all historic arms were available and whoever held the field won. Various swordsmen vied to hold the field for a time, falling after ten minutes or twenty; one challenger or five.
Then a man dressed as a simple monk wielding a bo staff enlisted for combat, took the field, and held it for hours -- leaving undefeated due to prior engagements.
To put it mildly, SCA types are not your common pansies. An SCA event without some blood is hardly worth celebrating, and attendees who miss some bruising might as well have watched a movie. That an adept with a Bo held the field against all comers says a great deal.
The San Jose riots tipped some hands. If Trump recruits in some dojos, the Alinsky crowd might find themselves in an interesting situation.

If you tour Windsor Castle, one of the things you notice is that the audience rooms (each of which gets smaller toward the throne -- to make it seem bigger) are effectively armories of obsolete weapons. It's not like the queen is going to give you a backrub -- she speaks at the end of a series of chambers dedicated to cutting flesh, punching holes, and ending life. But you get to walk in calmly because you're not going to do anything that requires any of that......

1: He slapped me at will all through what was a fake fight to him that I thought was real.
2: My Dad is blind in his left eye and he took all I had to that side (I kinda knew he was but didn't think about that moment oh and I'm right handed) he ended up with a significant black eye and bruises. And I was a little confused by the rapidity of slaps but unharmed.
That day I learned my dad was in his youth a Golden Gloves Boxer and he cared more about teaching me a lesson than he cared about his personal pain.
(This boxing match was done using glove dad had given me as a present when I was14)

Only exception, the car trailer I bought nigh-on 15 years ago from a weird, out-of-the-way pawn shop in Calgary run by a Russian Jew, straight out of Russia. Got it for $3000, which was a steal at the time. Had a big Knaack toolbox on it, too.
I did the weed-eater boogie last summer, too. Had an old Ryobi with both electric and recoil start. It was getting cranky, and hard to start and idle. Went to Lowes, bought a new one. It was junk, even missing pieces, could not get it to run at all. Took it back for a refund. Tore the Ryobi apart. Put new diaphragm and primer bulb in carburetor. Threw recoil start in garbage can; it was situated between the flywheel and clutch, instead of one the free end of the motor crankshaft, and really, really complicated the assembly. Bought a small AGM battery to replace the dead Nicads in the cranking battery. Got me through the whole summer that way. Started it up this week, and did a patch, and then the rain came and shut me down. One whiff of ether in the carb, and it started and idled fine, and revved up to full power when the throttle was opened. Still working fine.

1: He slapped me at will all through what was a fake fight to him that I thought was real.
2: My Dad is blind in his left eye and he took all I had to that side (I kinda knew he was but didn't think about that moment oh and I'm right handed) he ended up with a significant black eye and bruises. And I was a little confused by the rapidity of slaps but unharmed.
That day I learned my dad was in his youth a Golden Gloves Boxer and he cared more about teaching me a lesson than he cared about his personal pain.
(This boxing match was done using glove dad had given me as a present when I was14)

Back when money flowed like wine, I used to hit this place every month because they're always FULL of tools. They like to price things at retail, but I usually picked stuff up for 40% of their sticker.
I haven't been up there in a couple years, but man, have they changed.
He also had a second weedeater, so I asked what he wanted for it - "same price, but that one doesn't run." WTF?
I lucked out. Turns out the throttle cable on mine was just really stretched. It's a cheapo Ryobi, too. I am NOT spending money on parts for the thing (at least 4 yrs old now), so I opened a beer while I thought about a solution...
I tied a knot in the cable, re-attached it & buttoned everything back up.
Runs great for now.
I'll wait a week or two before I re-allocate the money I had set aside to hookers & blow.

This reminds me of the latest Ken Follett book I ready. Edge of Eternity, chronicling the 60's through late 90's, culminating in the inauguration of Obama in an epilogue. Revolting. Didn't even mention Thatcher. Reagan was a mass murderer. Carter didn't even get a mention. LBJ pushed through civil rights, yet Republicans in Congress didn't get a mention. All Republicans were awful people, one of them regularly paying for hand jobs at a massage parlor, while all Democrats were upright important people. One of the black law clerks was having an affair with Kennedy and he paid for her abortion. USSR failed because Gorbachev was a reformer. Reagan didn't do anything, Bush didn't do anything, Thatcher didn't even appear in the book and PJPII was mentioned for being Polish but not for pushing back against Communism. They even said the "tear down that wall" speech didn't do anything and that after the fact Republicans just took credit for it. Gorbachev was just a heck of a guy.
Couldn't even finish the epilogue. Awful. And I usually love reading him.
