Those ships can't be to scale. The hospital ship USNS Mercy T-AH-19 is built in an oil supertanker hull and is definitely bigger than an amphibious assault ship.
IIRC the USNS Mercy is second only to a Nimitz class carrier in length (and might beat it in volume). Posted by: HuuskerDu at May 28, 2016 10:09 PM (gYAkw) 15

So, today rapidly went awry. The dishwasher seemed to be leaking a bit -- I thought it might be the main door gasket. It was.
While I was initially thinking it might be the main door gasket, I also considered that it might be the dishwasher's internal air gap. It was. Once I had it all disconnected and pulled out, I propped it up on a pair of milk crates in front of the sink and ran it to see if there was another leak. There was. So, three leaks (and counting), the lower rack had suffered a coating failure and had rusting-out spots. The vinyl interior was seriously discolored.....and, tonight, I have a different dishwasher than I had this morning. I am seriously beat. Posted by: cthulhu at May 28, 2016 10:27 PM (EzgxV) 46

Sixkiller, I am still trying to cut back more on the carbs than other things. But I know me, I just can't give up pizza, ramen or a few other things. I can force myself to not eat them *as often* however, and I think I can continue to keep the frequency heading downward. I did have a backslide recently as I've rediscovered Popeye's. But I'm getting used to the idea that there are some thing I'm only meant to have 2-3 times a year, including that. I've also finally cut back my soft drinks intake by, I'd say, about 80%. Usually here at the ONT, I whine about all the women I've turned off and how I and/or they did so much wrong... so tonight, I'll share one of my very few "I dun good" stories.
Around 2007, I had the *one* temp job that I wish I had never left; I was working in the Cypress office of California's Department of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources, or DOGGR. Anyway. It turns out one of their petro engineers was a fresh-off-campus beauty named Vanessa. She had a bit of a Mila vibe but just a bit more nerdy. But that's okay, I'm a nerd too and like that vibe. Well, I don't know why I was so clear-headed, but something in me at the time told me: if you try to pick her up, ask for a date, come on too strong, etc etc... you're going to lose this job. And I did not want to lose the job. One of the first things they teach you when you're a temp is, you're not just easily disposable... you're pretty much a 53rd wheel and entirely optional for everyone on staff. But thankfully I had heard about all that *before* I even knew she existed, not during. On top of this... I had overheard two senior execs in the office actually mentioning, this Vanessa had actually filed a sex harassment complaint in the office before. It was against a guy who was openly obnoxious, but still, it was a wake-up call for me. Anyway. I decided since she was already an engineer and I was just the typing temp, I better stay away from her cube for awhile. And I did; thankfully they did a good job keeping me preoccupied with easy, but prolific, busywork. Then I found out she was transferring to another state department, and would only be there another two weeks. So, for once in my life, I played it cool. Finally, ONE day before she was set to leave (a Thursday), I bumped into her at the copy center cube. I played it cool, introduced myself, and congratulated her on her move. THANK GOD she wasn't a bitch, said thank you, and we actually got to chat a bit. She wished me well as well and I believe even said words to the effect of, hope you're not a temp here forever, which was nice of her. So I let her go, and she left. And it worked out well. The fact I didn't completely turn her off helped, and I learned it was also in my best interest not to fall for her too hard. When she left I missed her a bit but nothing like I've missed other crushes who left my life, and I don't think I ever obsessed on her. I just wish I could have kept that same cool the next time I was dealing with an attractive co-worker. Oh well. Posted by: qdpsteve at May 28, 2016 11:00 PM (ntObR) 122

He asked me to have my physician prescribe it; psychologists by themselves can't prescribe yet, although I've heard in California they're fighting for that right. My pharmacists are grossly overworked. That being said, I haven't found a pharmacy that can consistently get things right. I've fired a couple.
I have a lot of changes and some major restrictions on ingredients (and therefore brands), and pharmacies love to go for the cheapest brand at any given moment, which I can't do without adequate warning. Pharmacy companies also change sources and ingredients constantly, to save pennies. All of them. I don't get any painkillers, mostly heart meds. It's not common knowledge and not everyone agrees, but generally fat acts like a control rod on the carbs you consume. Slows the blood sugar rush, like lowering the glycemic index a little.
Which is why soda and juice are so bad (but OHHHHH so good). So, like, Sherbet with cream in it may be not as bad as fruit (for the blood sugar, not healthier overall). Basmati rice is a *lot* better on GI than most rices, and if you let it sit overnight after cooking with a little fat mixed in, and re-heat, even more digestible starch will be converted to indigestible. This may work with other starches but it's not well documented. I don't eat as healthy as I should, but I am managing more low-carb days and less days with sugar in them. It is better, if less fun. Yes, the Marines most definitely still use the MH-53 helos. I believe new models are still in production as well. Many places in San Diego County and I'm guessing near Cherry Point, NC you can see them, all the time. And no, I don't think the Marines still use the Prowlers. I believe they have been replaced by an F-18 variant for electronic warfare. I am a retired Peace Officer, and just last Wednesday was talking to someone I know who is considerably higher up the food chain than I was. It is more a matter of changing supply chains rather than a low profit margin on pot. Colorado legalizing pot, and our Democrat state government refusing to touch anything to do with pot even when they break the new laws [or any other laws, if you grow/sell pot the state has a total hands off attitude and you are invisible], has made us and the Pacific Northwest the primary suppliers for the entire continental US. It is leaving the state by the semi-load, and we are catching less than 1 in 10 of them. The Mexican [and some Cubans out of Florida] cartels are supplying the US demand, and they are now using the supply chains/routes previously used for pot to move Mexican Brown heroin. Get ready, we are seeing the leading wave of a tsunami of heroin hitting the country. In my small mountain county, we have several heroin OD's a week, mostly not fatal thanks to liberal use of Naloxone. Posted by: Subotai Bahadur at May 29, 2016 12:53 AM (KOBnd) 356

And what suxx about the new anti-prescription opioid laws.... used to be, a documented cruising sailor could get, legally, by prescription, a dozen emergency morophene styrettes to add to his boat's emergency medical kit, just in case.
You know, when you're a thousand miles offshore, and break an arm or ribs in a rough sea, a dismasting or other cause of serious injury, you're not exactly close to a drive-in E.R. Now, it takes reams of documents from the prescribing doctor, as well as formal permission from the D.E.A., to even get to have a chance to be so equipped when you cast off lines. An ocean going sailboat needs a damn near E.R. quality first-aid box, and the everything that goes with it. Quality emergency training along with that, too. Elsewise, I'd end up with a tourniquet around my neck to stop the bleeding. I mean, it WOULD work, but maybe a bit too well for my own good? Jim - that's really awful about the pilot.
And not so good about the morphine thing, either (didn't know about that). Indeed you'd want a corpseman's kit for long-distance cruising. Through family connections I used to get anti-biotics to take along on my travels, which both for work and pleasure often involved pretty distant and dubious places. Sort of related - these days, as a global cruiser, I'd feel quite unsafe without "heat" aboard, yet I know most countries ban firearms on recreational boats. Secret compartments come to mind ...... And Jim, thanks for that link. So sad about that pilot. Sounds like mechanical issue. A few years ago an older guy of the right vintage (i.e. WWII) came into the place I volunteer. He was wearing a P-47 ball-cap. I asked "did you fly those?". When he said yes, I joked "well I hope you weren't shot down, that wasn't supposed to happen with P-47s". Turns out he *was* shot down. March 1945. He said an oil line must have been hit, he saw his oil pressure just collapse, and bailed out. Less than two months in a Luftstalag, liberated by advancing Allied ground forces. He was very good-natured about it and seemed amused that someone knew much about the P-47. Posted by: rhomboid at May 29, 2016 01:19 AM (QDnY+) 390

For all you AR fans out there.
In my never-to-be-humble opinion on such things. Unless you're shooting the match ammo heavier than 68 gr. weight, then the most versatile AR barrel will be a .223 Wylde chamber, with a 1:8 twist, regardless of barrel length or contour. It'll shoot the 55 gr., up to the 62 gr. Match, with aplomb, and will hande 5.56 or .223 with equal elan. Perfect for everything? Of course not. Good for nearly everything. Very much so. YMMV. It *does* vary by barrel... but 1:8 will often handle just about anything you throw at it.
Occasionally you find a really short 35 grain or something that it will spin to pieces (metaphorically, hopefully). Some will do 80 grains (though AR mags generally won't). Last I heard people were still trying to figure out a reliable way to figure out what twist to use, but since it includes bearing area and mass and material... it's a little bit voodoo. Most people just go by weight by from what I've seen bullet-to-barrel contact (bearing) area is more important. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at May 29, 2016 01:33 AM (wB8Tg) 405

I've been doing this for two weeks and have lost 10 lbs. I was surprised that fasting isn't as hard as I thought it would be. If you don't want to watch all 8 hours of video, just watch #1 and #4.

I've taken a stone to the leading edge of a roll-pin before inserting it into an AR receiver. You don't even need to cut a visible chamfer into the pin.
Just break the sharp edge, only a wee bit...a tiny bit of shiny will do ya. Hit that with a sharpie pen to reblacken it, and inset as usual. You can do a similar cut on the holes in the receiver, with a conical dremel bit, sans the dremel tool! Hand hold the dremel bit, and just a few light turns in the receiver hole to break the edge. Nothing more. And if you still have difficulty. Freeze the pins. Heat the receiver to the lowest "warm" setting in your oven, for 10 min or so. The pins will glide right in. 420 I have one of those I'd like to dump: too heavy and front-heavy for my tastes. I like the 18 as a compromise between the 16 and 20. I have a 24 I never use that's worse. My lastcomposition I put on one of them ambis and I thought it was pretty cool- I have neuropathy bad and it seems to really help- It was a pistol and when I took it out I realizedthat the ar pistolhas no recognizable purpose that an xd or 16 wouldn'tserve better Posted by: MAx at May 29, 2016 01:51 AM (0uuiT) 431

ATF's magic powers over guns so far as CHARGING goes is off the hook. *usually* you can find a judge to exert some sanity and sanction wild overreach, BUT it is expensive and *sometimes* you lose... just not worth it IMHO no matter how much I want a Sterling MK-V https://youtu.be/8KijBHAZY1o Posted by: sven10077 at May 29, 2016 03:12 AM (g8Hfr) 482
In case anyone has the slightest concern regarding the dishwasher swapout....we axed a Whirlpool and gained an LG LDS5040ST. Consumer Reports rated it a 75 -- and most of the higher ratings went to units in the $1300 range.....we paid $499.
The big thing with this model was its ability to lay down its tines -- we have two odd subsystems depending on dishwashers. First is an electrostatic precipitator on the HVAC in the attic -- its cells need dishwashed about monthly. Second is the hood above our cooktop -- its baffles need washing whenever the light comes on. Further, we frequently have to put the slow-cooker in the dishwasher -- and tines are in the way. The ability to configure racks was a major factor in its selection. Posted by: cthulhu at May 29, 2016 03:13 AM (EzgxV) 483

ATF guy and I would jaw some, we were not "buddies" but definitely friendly acquaintances. I had told him I wanted a Galil set-up I had seen a Mossad guy use it was essentially a 16" pistol with foregrip and a 608 style buttplate on the buffer tube short. Guy did me the favor of taking out a scratch pad and writing out all of the THEN stupid rules that have only gotten dumber. This was back in '94-95 IIRC definitely before 1996-97 Posted by: sven10077 **** True. Even the feds seemed confused at times. I am convinced the rules are screwy simply to harass gun owners. I'm combing through a lot of old emails as part of my loooong process of updating the Mohammed Image Archive.
In past years, Muslim troll/hacker types often signed me up (i.e. used my email address) for various Muslim religious advice newsletters -- presumably in an attempt to convert me, I guess. Anyway, I saved some of these newsletters because they're just so absolutely insane and they reveal what jaw-dropping evil and lunacy lie at the heart of Islam. Often the format is like an advice columnist, except instead of Dear Abby, it's famous clerics issuing fatwas or clarifications about various topics and questions sent in by readers. One newsletter contained the following tidbits, which I just had to share with you all before deleting the email: A reader asked "What happens to the children of Unbelievers when they die young? Do they go to Paradise (that is, Muslim Paradise), or Hell?" Well, the clerics said it was a complicated question, because it had been answered in different ways in different hadiths over the centuries. But the general consensus was this: The good news -- Yes, the children of non-Muslims do in fact go to Muslim Paradise when they die. The bad news? They go to Muslim Paradise so they can be the slaves of the true Muslims there. Ah, yes, little-known Muslim Facts that everyone in the media and academia sweeps under the rug. In Islamic belief your children -- you, the people reading this, and every non-Muslim child in the world -- gets to spend eternity as slaves to some terrorist who blew himself up to get into Paradise. Got it. OK. Nice religion you got there. There is another alternate theory, held in some fatwas, that non-Muslims don't go to Paradise or Hell -- because they're not human. Instead, being not actual human beings, infidels like you and I "are annihilated like animals.. Frankly, that sounds preferable to being a slave to a psychopathic murderer for the rest of time. Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale Running With Scissors at May 29, 2016 03:31 AM (hVdx9)" That is an additional complication. The original STEN gun could fire semi-auto. There was a selector switch that pushed through from side to side. Essentially, all it does is engage a disconnector so that once the trigger is pulled and the bolt is released, the sear is free to catch the bolt again the next time it goes fully to the rear. That just makes it a semi-auto gun that fires from an open bolt. Firing from an open bolt is not very accurate but then we are talking about rifling being optional so... The Mark 1 was designed and built with some things that were lying around in a bicycle repair shop. The Mark 7 was make by a toy manufacturer who had access to a more sophisticated factory and experience making stamped metal toys. No beheading. I don't think they came after you if you sneaked off. Most of his followers probably had daddy issues. Koresh was a pretty smooth prophet by most accounts. So he didn't need an army. They sold guns and ammunition to make money. The attack was probably as much about tax policy as gun control. It is not believable that the feds gave a rats ass about the kids. Not after the toasted them. The Feds worship Moloch. Posted by: huh? at May 29, 2016 08:34 AM (CRXed) Posted by: huh? at May 29, 2016 08:38 AM (CRXed) 528
