Thursday, May 26 Overnight Thread - Dregs of the Dregs Edition [Weirddave]

This is it. The last day of your time in the wilderness. On Sunday, Maet will be back and your regularly scheduled ONTing will resume, but for tonight, one last night, y'all are stuck with me again. So consider this the dregs of the dregs* edition of the ONT.

The World's Most Handsome Horse

It's Fabio! In horse form! Yes, they use the Fabio comparison in the article linked as well, but it was my first thought on seeing the picture. That is one beautiful animal.

Slow Motion Video

Technical progress is a wonderful thing. Modern video techniques allow us to not just freeze a moment in time for later review, but to actually slow it down to better observe what occurred. Sports broadcasters have been using this technology for years to allow fans to better appreciate the nuances of the game, but now with proliferation of super high speed cameras, entire new worlds of wonder are accessible to the average human in a way they never have been before.

Literary Interlude

What if David Mamet wrote 2001?

Musical Interlude

Career Choices

So you want to be a musician, but your parents are adamant that you instead take up a more traditional trade, one more likely to lead to financial security, like woodworking. What should one do when faced with such a dilemma?

Oh, I dunno, maybe this.

Abortion News

Leftists Watch Abortion Video. Immediately Become Pro-Life On Camera!

I've long thought that when I get rich, I'd like to fund a fleet of buses, staffed with nurses and equipped with 3-D ultrasound machines. I would have these buses park close to abortion abattoirs, where they would simply offer free ultrasounds to any woman that wanted them. That's it. No pressure, no preaching, no anything else. Just free 3-D ultrasounds to any and all that wanted them. I did a little research and it looked like the equipment cost would be upwards of $100K, plus staff and of course security. Well, I'm not rich yet, but it's a hell of an idea for a non-profit.

Mid-East Update

But The Water Was Only Chest High to the Ducks!

Sobering

Confessions Of A Nazi Concentration Camp Survivor

Hard to read, but this man is definitely a better man than I. I loved this part, however:

What was your initial experience of America when you first arrived in 1947?

Well, when I was arrived, I was very, very overcome. I was impressed. It was just overwhelming to me.
First, I arrived in New York harbor, and of course, the skyscrapers, the lifestyle… I made a sort of promise to myself then: This is going to be the first day of your life. From this day on, there is only ONE place to go: SUCCEED. I will build a family, I will do whatever I can in my power to succeed in this United States of America.
And this was my first impression. I liked what I seen. I met people who I thought were industrious, with businesses and families and love…there’s respect. I loved what I saw in America. I became American in my heart immediately. So I adopted America, and I am glad America adopted me, and allowed me to be part of it, and become a citizen.

I Can't Imagine Why

How John Hinckley Lives Now

Wow, is that how people see me? I have these other aspects of my life that no one knows about. I’m an artist. I’m a musician. Nobody knows that. They just see me as the guy who tried to kill Reagan.

It's like the guy is determined to be a living embodiment of the punchline to and old joke - “But you fuck one lousy goat....”.

Dystopia

In between MySpace and Facebook, there was LiveJournal. It's still big outside the US, I understand, but eight years ago, just after the election of Obama, Sigma-one-seven started a journal. It purported to be written by a member of the American Resistance, writing from the year 2033, using some type of temporal technology her cell had captured from a government laboratory. The journal was kept up for about 4 years, and it was an amazingly good read about the trials and tribulations she was going through with her cell, fighting off government agencies, helping normal citizens (for example, people in rural Virginia were freezing to death due to government prohibition against burning wood-to combat “global warming", of course-during raging blizzards that were the norm), and trying to keep the ideals of America alive. It was well written, engaging in a serial style, and the story had everything: People put in camps, genetically engineered wolves, states seceding, and lots of “history” (to her, speculative future to us. You'll never guess who the president is, for example.). It'll take a while to read it all, but it is very enjoyable. The story starts here. At the time it seemed far fetched.

Dad Jokes

When Big was about 14, I got up one morning and discovered that he had left 2 tabs open on my computer. One was his Facebook page, the other porn. I immediately updated his FB-”Big thinks his father doesn't know that he gets up early to whack off to online porn”-and changed his password. I didn't let him erase it for two days. These aren't quite as cruel, but then again, none of these kids thought they were smarter than me either.

im-gay.jpg

Hollywood's Economic Ignorance

Ever wonder why so many people believe so many things that just aren't so? Well, a large part of it is due to the fact that the “reality” painted by mass media is anything but. Here's an interesting four part series examining just how wrong much of the “economics” presented as common knowledge by Hollywood really is.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

Thief With a Conscience

Thief returns stolen items with an apology, sheriff says

According to the sheriff, at least one of the thieves went back to the marina on Monday night and returned all of the stolen items, undamaged, along with an apology note.

The note read, "I am very sorry. I do not know why I did it in the first place. It's way out of my character. That is not what kind of person I am. I do not even remember doing it. I am so sorry. I know this does not make it ok, but it is your stuff, not mine. Again, I am very sorry."

Thief Without a Conscience

Apple Stole My Music. No, Seriously.

This guy signed up for Apple Music, and the software scanned his computer, downloaded 122GB of music, and then erased it off of his hard drive. It's part of a growing movement where corporations don't let you own any content, you simply pay them to access what you "buy". If they don't want something out there, then poof! Down the memory hole. Something similar happened to me. I have about 1000 mp3s that I've accumulated over the years. I loaded them all onto my iPhone6, and I used to put it on random and listen while I was driving. I say used to, because the last time I updated my iPhone, Apple erased them all without my permission. The guy at the phone store confirmed that yes, Apple does that. I've been very happy with my iPhone, but this may be enough to drive me back to Android next time I upgrade. Scary, scary stuff.

A Dog's Life

The men who live as dogs

Mandogs.jpg

That's a face that is saying “Please, shoot me now” if I've ever seen one.

Welcome to 2016, where we condemn the normal and celebrate the unhinged.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by racks of....er, ribs. Yes, that's it, ribs.

Racks.jpg

*Yes, dregs. You should see the stuff I left out, like a video of porn stars sharing the most extreme scenes they've done, a "practical joke" that involved putting capsaicin on a woman's Tampax and Yoko. Yes, there's always Yoko, so mind your manners.

Family and love songs completely out of date
Heads full of mush, Social Justice, and H8
Woman needs dildo, and man must have his Male Mate
That, no one legally can deny

It's still the same old story
A fight for sex and glory

This Depp/Heard divorce is going to be fun. No prenup and only lasted about 15 months. The salary he made during the marriage would be community property and half would go to her. Of course, then she would also be liable for expenses during that period. That's the law. And frankly, he was drugged out all the time and would not get help. So, she earned it. He's also worth $400 mil. It has not been a good year for Depp. Black Mass was a good movie but got panned by the critics and word of mouth didnt help it either. Not sure what the problem was. Not only was Depp good but the supporting actors were great, too.

Well, I didn't get to go yesterday, my knee was acting up and I just need to keep weight off of it, and so my father went with a cousin. My father said she was asking about me, and if he didn't know better, he'd think she had her eye on me. And then he said, "what did you do?"

So, I take that as confirmation of what my little radar was picking up, and was worried about.

So, random thoughts after Weiner:

1 - Huma will emerge as the most interesting American political (peripheral) figure of the early 21st century. Her second betrayal is imminent. Whoever gets the in-depth interviews with her over the coming years will have literary gold.

2 - The marriage of opposites (Huma and Anthony). They seem to have chemistry, love, affection. It's her tragedy, his salvation.

3 - The inexorable fall of a scumbag. "Hillary 2016!" was shouted in the background a few times. Her fate is prefigured.

4 - Huma at times looks and sounds like a Valley Girl. How did she become so anti-American? That Holocaust survivor and Huma, what a contrast.

Today I fired up that Nissan SD22 Diesel that I was playing with. Could not get a gasket set; seemingly none to be had in North America. So I goobered up the used head gasket, and stuck it back on.

Took a lot of cranking to bleed air out of the injector lines, but it did eventually start, and put on quite the smoke show. Ran on 3 cylinders, and the fourth one banging like a pistol shot every go-round. I think the camshaft had a lobe go flat, and one exhaust valve is not opening enough, or at all, maybe. Chevy 350's had a bad camshaft problem in the early '80's, and they sounded like that, too.

I will try to sell it or even give it away to somebody who needs a parts engine. Failing that, I will scrap it. It would be a huge money sink to fix it up, if parts can even be obtained (possibly Australia), and to little purpose for me.

Posted by: Chi at May 26, 2016 11:38 PM (YaSSM)

Dachshunds are actually bred to hunt badgers. They are utterly fearless, have surprisingly powerful jaws, and their tails are firmly affixed. They are supposed to chase a badger into its sett, clamp on, and have their human pull them and the fighting, clawing, pissed-off, vicious, weasel-kin badger out of the tunnel using the dachshund's tail -- after which the badger gets speared....if things go really, really, really well....

More about Huma, the star of the movie:

She is in her prime, and she's one of these women who is gorgeous all the time. Minimal makeup, great taste in clothes, looks fabulous first thing in the morning. The most stunning scene is the one where she sends Anthony forth on election day to vote by himself. She lingers in the elevator foyer, sick of the sight of her stupid, lying loser of a husband who has blown an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime second grab at the brass ring.

The stranger I sat next to agreed she embodied the intrigue and the sense of waste of the story.

295 Gingy got in a fender bender the other day, and we have a rental BMW 328i. Nice car, has lots of get up and go and it goes around curves lie it's on a track. Not sure it's all that and a bag of chips, however. It's keyless, and you push the same button to start it up and shut it down (must have been designed by Windows engineers). The shifter seems needlessly complex (easy enough to pick up how it works, however, but it could be much simpler) and the display under the (analog, yay!) gauges nags you with a "SPEED WARNING!" under hard acceleration or at high speed (I was only doing 100).

Nice car, and they make it in stick. I might consider it when the Accord goes to Little (can't get them with stick anymore)

298 265: She's a nerdy girl, obviously sort of a geeky nerd in school, and smart as hell. She just wears "sensible clothes" under her lab coat.

But she's a puh-sychiatress and that scares the ever loving shit out of me. Talk about being able to play mind games. A woman, and smart, and a shrink. She could turn my mind to jelly if she wanted to likely.

I think what piqued her interest, I *think* mind you, was my writing. When I first realized my mother was irrational, I needed to communicate with my father. But he's hard of hearing and can't hear it thunder without his hearing aides, and even with them, you have to talk loud and form words clearly and distinctly.

So, I just quickly typed up something describing what I'd discovered, and then over the several days as she descended further into, well, madness, I typed some more.

Now, that gave them a good window into what was happening with lucky first hand account written on paper, and they wanted to see it and make copies.

She read it all and I think that was it. My writing has done that before a time or two.

299 AOP - Shouldn't it be fairly easy to measure the lobes? If that *is* the problem, how much can a 4-banger cam cost?

Posted by: Mike Hammer's Cat at May 26, 2016 11:41 PM (9mTYi)

Well, I could pretty easily put a dial indicator on the rocker arms and measure the cam lift, I guess. But if parts availability for that engine is as piss-poor as it seems to be, why bother? For my purposes, something a little more commonplace is better.

I have determined that the little engine is not useable as-is, no way, no how. And it could cost me close to 2 grand to make it useful, if I can get rebuild parts from Australia or China.

It was fun to play with it. But it's a dead end for me now. If I have to scrap it, I now can do so with a clear conscience. But I'd prefer to sell or give it to somebody who could use its parts to make another one whole. It has oil pressure, crank, rods, pistons and liners seem to be OK, injection pump works, starter and glow plugs work. Lots of pickin' for somebody who has an early '80's Nissan Diesel pickup and wants to keep it on the road.

Rumor had it that LAPD stashed their families and retirees in Simi Valley, while mobsters and criminal syndicates stashed their families and retirees in Thousand Oaks. Both are seriously law-and-order places with low crime rates -- in Simi Valley, because criminals get busted; in Thousand Oaks, because criminals disappear.

The Los Angeles Angels are sliding, stuck with aging stars with big contracts that make them untradeable, and their farm system is universally the lowest rated in baseball. By a lot.

Most terriers were developed to keep rats and mice out of housing/grain stores/livestock areas/kitchen gardens (which is why there are so many types). They are relentless in their duties. One description from the Westminster Dog Show is that a certain breed's evaluation standard cannot be docked points for "honorable scars, nobly borne". In other words, a "perfect" dog of that breed would be expected to have "gotten into the action" a few times, and be willing to do so again.

I'm thinking that 5-10 acres with specific sites sprinkled on it (tinyhouses?) will be a big help. "Go check gatehouse!" -- *when dog arrives at gatehouse* Computer screen: "All good?" She grew up in the suburbs of NYC. She, then, went to school upstate. After graduation, she went to Houston for economic opportunities. When that betrayed her, she moved to Silicon Valley. She's been in Silicon Valley for 20 years and it hasn't betrayed her yet. It will, and maybe even soon. The trendlines are all indicating a retrenchment.

I'd prefer to cash out before the crash and reposition into something that will survive hyperinflation. No can do while she's clinging to what used-to-be.

Our dog is such a gentleman. When we are getting ready to go home, he goes over on the passenger side of the car, and sits and waits. After I open the door and let Milady in, help her with the seatbelt, and close the door, only then does he get up, to come around on the driver's side where he and I get in. Good boy.

Software is getting like that, too. Adobe, Quark, Autocad, etc. It's in the "cloud" and is subscription-based. You don't install it on your own computer and you have to pay in perpetuity to keep using it.

I don't want to upgrade my OS, because I strongly suspect that the software that I *own* and have *installed* will not work with the newer version.

Dogs and men have been in close proximity long enough to have evolved together. We have instinctive knowledge of each others' social dynamic. In fact, dogs have better knowledge of ours (built into the DNA), than we have of our own (transmitted primarily through culture).

Yes, indeed - but it may take some effort to entice that dynamic if there's been mistreatment.

When this guy first came to us, he was abandoned and apparently had been ill-treated. Took a long while to rein in his wilder behaviors like running off-property or barking perpetually, and especially to alleviate his anticipating being punished for any slight.

But lots of patience, love, long walks and repeated instruction, along with his eagerness to please, to learn what his "job" was, eventually got us trained to each other. Lots of credit to Milady for that.

Best thing was, at least, he came to us house-trained.

425 Random remark--

Couple nights ago, we watched Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford in Gilda (1946). Actor who played Ford's assistant looked familiar, but I couldn't place him. One of those tough guys you can see in a hundred films. Looked him up tonight - Joe Sawyer. No wonder he was familiar - he was Sgt. O'Hara in a hundred Rin Tin Tins.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0768178/

Tonight we watched a two-reeler (I guess - 1 hour) from 1935, George and Gracie in Here Comes Cookie. There was another tough-guy broken-nose character (actually called "Broken Nose" in the film) that I thought at first might be the same actor. But he was James Burke, who - if I've got this right - was Luke, the mug that Bogart took down a couple of times in Maltese Falcon.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0121707/

I really admire those old hard-working character actors who maybe never got top billing, but filled a lot of roles.

449 but don't take my word for it, read this from AoSHQ June 2010 (Begin partial quote): I don't like soccer 'cause
it sucks. I'm deep that way.

The reason Americans don't play soccer is that we can afford the
equipment to play better, cooler sports.
Anybody can play soccer. 22
guys, a vacant lot, one ball. Even in
Krapistan, they can afford one ball between 22 of them. Therefore,
anybody can play it. Here in America,
we play sports that require equipment. Bats, gloves, helmets, bikes,
gasoline, yachts, hockey sticks. And
places to play. Basketball courts, ice
hockey rinks, football fields. When you
live in Elbonia, and your government keeps your rice rations down, you learn to
do sports which you can do with little or no equipment. That's why
Ethiopia has such great runners: you need literally no equipment to play
running. Here in America, we have cooler sports, which require more
stuff, and we can afford the stuff.

Soccer is for children. It's a simple
game for simple people. Would you start
a kickball league? How about a
dodgeball league? Soccer is a game for
kids because it's easy to run around and chase a ball and try to kick the b
NPR and other liberal drones
have never ventured the guess that American's don't like soccer because it
isn't football. We also don't like rugby, cricket, and squash, all socialist
European fag sports. If it ain't football, basketball or baseball, all
American pastimes, its faggy.

The Indians invented lacrosse (granted,
a more violent version of the modern game), which requires one of the more
complicated (and awesome) playing devices to come out of a stone age
culture. It's culture related. If the rest of the world were as savage and
awesome as the Native Americans of lore, soccer/football would be a historical
footnote.

Penalty kicks. Deciding the championship of a team sport on
the basis of an individual skill contest is plain dumb

Meh soccer sucks because it just isn't
very good. In American football you see
good individual plays with every down.
Soccer is sloppy, passes are inaccurate, those receiving passes usually
don't receive them. There are no plays
really, there are certain things they try to do in certain situations but not
everyone is on the same page or even at the same part of the field. Every down in football and every pitch in
baseball has some sort of play on and that is why they score more often. Soccer to me is a bunch of people running
around looking for an opportunity instead of creating an opportunity to either
score or defend against a score. That's why it's boring.

After careful contemplation
of all of your thoughtful points, and with all due deference to your
considerable writing skill, I must humbly submit to you that my much shorter
treatment has the greater explanatory power, to wit: Soccer sucks. (And it's teh ghey.)

487 The whole problem with the House bill and the evil alphabet soup gender lie bill is that it never should have been possible to bring up the amendment for a vote. The House has never been an anyone can add an amendment to a bill body. That is the Senate. Due to its size, the House almost always required things to work up through committee. If Ryan is letting just anyone add amendments, he's an idiot politically and practically. You don't force your members to vote on trash like this when the Dems are creating a firestorm out of it.

Or face the consequences of your refusal.

It may be many things.

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

I'm hoping for an easy day at work, but usually when I wish that it's anything but, so we will see. Here, for no reason other than she's a pretty girl, is the dancer Ann Pennington:

http://goo.gl/lUj5jf

She was known for introducing the dance known as the "Black Bottom" to white audiences in the 1926 edition of the racy George White's Scandals. A peppy handful, she stood only 4' 10" and wore a size 1 1/2 shoe.

(1 1/2? Excuse me. Bunk)

Now, where were we? Ah, yes. Pennington was, at the height of her fame, earning over a thousand dollars a week, but her money vanished as fast as it came, not only because she was a soft touch, but she also lost her money at the track and - since she never had a home - to enormous hotel bills. She died in 1971 in a shabby hotel on 42nd Street.

A different Ann Pennington (not related to our girl) was the Playmate of the Month for March of 1976.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

504 "Because millenials don't read, they watch video, many of Hillary's target demographic will stay blissfully unaware of this whole mess. "

Your words would be just as accurate if you removed "blissfully", and substituted "willfully" in its place.

The conscious goal of remaining ignorant of actual facts.

519 A little known fact:Jesus was stripped naked for the crucifixion. All those crucifixes with a loin cloth are historically inaccurate.

I believe that is debatable- it was certainly normal for the Romans to strip their prisoners nude before crucifixion, but they may have left a scrap on when in Israel, as a concession to the Jewish taboo against nakedness (Romans and Jews shared a comittment to ancestral Law and personal morality, so the Romans may have been more sympathetic to Jewish culture than one might expect).
