Seriously: the only country with an actual fleet carrier comparable to an American one is _maybe_ the FS Charles de Gaulle. All the other "carriers" are what we call Amphibious Assault Ships. Even the much-vaunted Chinese carrier is a middleweight at best.
Now, this is actually quite understandable: most countries don't really need platforms for trans-ocean power projection. The European countries project power in Europe, the Asian countries in Asia. We're the only ones who _need_ fleet carriers.
Except maybe India. India's building some big carriers, and since India has pretty much decided they want to own the Indian Ocean, they've actually got a mission for them.

I think that graphic is pretty accurate. Modern cruise ships are much, much bigger than Titanic.
They look rather top-heavy to me, like a real-life Poseidon Adventure waiting to happen.

There, I think I got the pictures resized and formatted right now. And yes, I believe that Titanic picture is to scale. I looked up the dimensions of the Titanic once while on a 4 day Carnival cruse to Cozumel, and was stunned to realize that the (medium sized) ship I was on (Carnival Inspiration) was roughly the same size as the Titanic.

Yeah, DIVAD was not really much of an improvement over the Duster. Same dual 40mms on the same track chassis which is too slow to keep up with M-1s. And that it couldn't hit a stationary target even with radar well yeah total failure.

When I was in my senior year of high school, 1983-84, in my Media Occupations class, we had video production equipment we could use for projects.
Anyway, one of the other students, Craig McDonald, came up with the idea of doing a commercial for mud. Naturally it was based on some Taster's Choice commercial of the time.
He wanted us to do our bits in an improv style; that is, just turn on the camera, tell us we're drinking mud, and let us riff. So we got to my cameo:
Me: "Mmm, interesting. What's this I'm drinking?"
Craig: "Mud!"
Me: "Mud? It kind of reminds me of the sacred cow's milk I had during my trip to India last year. Kind of fruity, kind of mellow..."
(Yes, even then I had the rep for being long-winded.)
So anyway, even though it might not translate here, my bit was a hit... even the girl I had a crush on who hated me, Lisa, liked my segment.
From then on I was the "kind of fruity, kind of mellow" guy, until graduation in June 1984. :-)

Seriously: the only country with an actual fleet carrier comparable to an American one is _maybe_ the FS Charles de Gaulle. All the other "carriers" are what we call Amphibious Assault Ships. Even the much-vaunted Chinese carrier is a middleweight at best.
Now, this is actually quite understandable: most countries don't really need platforms for trans-ocean power projection. The European countries project power in Europe, the Asian countries in Asia. We're the only ones who _need_ fleet carriers.
Except maybe India. India's building some big carriers, and since India has pretty much decided they want to own the Indian Ocean, they've actually got a mission for them.

I think it's safe to say that China wants to project power. The Chinese want raw materials from other parts of the world, and are skirting the edge of running banana republics in some of the African countries.
But they don't have much of a naval tradition of their own, so they had to start with the old Soviet carrier that they have now. It'll be at least a decade, probably longer, before they can start doing something serious. They still have to train crews who can operate the baby carrier they've got, let alone a super carrier. But Beijing tends to try to take the long view.
And, of course, Japan has already responded with its new "helicopter" ships.

We held an Eagle Court of Honor yesterday, before which I had thd young man who would deliver the invocation practice reading his lines (the Beatitudes, "Blessed are the..."). He has some problems reading and an attention deficit issue, so rehearsal is warrented.
He reads this line, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God", pauses, looks up and says, "Hi, God!". I LOLed and told him, "Don't you dare do that during the ceremony!" He didn't, but he was close to laughing when he delivered that line during the real deal.

So my cryptic post @56 is about the Padres game this weekend where the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus (like I want to know the sexual orientation of a singing group -- and sexual orientation is the distinguishing criterion for joining) got drowned out when someone accidentally played a recording of the anthem.
You can imagine the circles of hell that are erupting.
Another lesson in why out-of-context identity groups are BULLSHIT. (A gay men's dating club sure, but a gay men's chorus?) One slip-up and there's a suspect agenda afoot. Mortal insults have been lodged, no one's word can be trusted, investigations must be launched, apologies abjectly delivered, monies paid, a city's reputation blotted.

My experience, too. The machine I am on, I use for work, and it needs to have Win7 to run a striplog program. Actually, last couple of wells, they had me go back to the WinXP version of the software, for compatibility reasons with other data being added at the office. I have XP on another hard drive, so dual-boot capability here. What I should do is load up Mint on this one, plus Xp and Win7 virtual machines, and see if I can get the striplog programs to run in the virtual machines, and print their output to a pdf.

Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 pretty hard. Not only are they still offering the free upgrade (for a little while longer), but now they're pretty much shoving the upgrade down your throat. Everyone who's running an upgradable version of Windows is going to get a pop-up at some point in the near future notifying them of when their Windows 10 upgrade is going to take place. If the user dismisses the notification without realizing what it says, then at the designated time - within the next few weeks - Windows 10 automatically starts installing. And there's pretty much nothing you can do about it unless you tell that notification that you don't want Windows 10.

It does. And, further, it's a gateway drug. If you get to liking Mint, it's only a short step to Ubuntu -- which gains you more abilities at the cost of some user-friendliness; and, if you start thinking Ubuntu is straightforward, you can go full state-of-the-art able-to-do-anything Debian.

We took our first cruise last October (Mrs. Hobbit went with several girlfriends in 2014).
We loved it but our ship had 12 decks, plus a couple of smaller extra decks aft and forward, yet it only had a draft of some 27 feet.
We went from Galveston to Honduras and had some pretty high swells due to storms. We were confined to quarters several times and even the crew was complaining about the swaying.
I figured that if the ship went dead, the odds of it tipping over were pretty high, despite a supposedly advanced stabilizer system.

Right from the get-go, when I installed Win7 from the legal, purchased, source disc, I have kept Automatic Updates turned off. I have manually installed a few updates to fix security holes when recommended on general-interest forums such as this. Usually, if there is an update that I should install, for my own protection, somebody here will be aware of it, and make it known.
So far, I have had no viruses in this machine, nor have I had annoying Windows updates, or even reminders. I do get annoying reminders for Skype, and Pale Moon, and Thunderbird, but I have become good at ignoring them.

True enough, but the real weight of the ship is still mostly below the bootstripe.
Not only is the modern cruise ship double-hulled, but the massive main engines are four-story tall masses of cast iron and steel. There are no propeller shafts, but the engines spin generators which power the electric drive motors (which are each as big as a semi-truck), and those motors are in steerable (pivoting) housings in pods under the hull.
Plus, there are six to eight more massive generators, which produce the power for the rest of the ship's systems, lighting, HVAC, galleys, laundry, heating water, and every other spark and millivolt aboard ship.
The 18 ft. high washing machines, and there are several of them, are below the waterline, as are the dryers, trash compactors, wastewater sanitation plant, thousands of tons of fuel and countless other massive industrial systems.
What's above decks is mostly empty cubic space, by density-comparison. Decks and bulkheads, in the greater scheme of things, don't weigh all that much. Hell, the meat-on-the-hoof weight of the combined passengers and crew is easily the heaviest bulk abovedecks.
Which is why Muster Stations are never higher than the Promenade, which is also where you get to look up at the bottom of all those larger-than-you-think lifeboats.
In all, the American Bureau of Shipbuilding standard is for those ships to sustain and recover from a roll angle of greater than 45 degrees, (I think the standard is 52 or 55 deg.), with no loss of primary navigational equipment.
Liberty of the Seas, is, as I recall, some 164,000 tons.
The very first cruise I took in '94 was aboard the (then) Nordic Empress*, also a Royal Caribbean ship. 67,000 tons. On a four day sail out of Ft. Lauderdale, crossing the Gulf Stream saw 16 to 20 ft. seas.
Now, that was a ship that heeled to weather...I'd say a max roll would've been some fifteen degrees. Nothing to a sailboat sailor, but it sure scared the hell out of the bulk of my passenger-shipmates. I considered it a bonus on the e-ticket ride!
* now renamed Empress of the Seas.
Anyway. The big cruise ships are quite safe in the heavy seas.
When are the not so very safe? When watertight integrity is compromised, and flooding occurs.
Anytime you know of any flooding in a cruise ship you're embarked upon....get your ass to your cabin, change into full length attire... jeans, tee shirt with sweatshirt over, athletic socks and lace up tennis shoes. Have a "go" bag ready from the time you unpack your luggage, into which go your money, jewelry, BASIC toiletries, passports and medicines. Dress as if you're going to have to sit, soaking wet, in that damn lifeboat for the next 36 hours. This ain't the time for shorts n' flip flops.
Hang out near your muster station, and wait for the (either) all clear, or abandon ship.
Oh, and I have a full bottle of booze in my go bag, too. Priorities!

Many people, and businesses, are still running XP. It's pretty stable, and does what it's needed to do. I still run it on occasion. As time goes by, it becomes less attractive as a target for the bad guys, because most of the world has moved on. Ain't many car thieves specializing in Model T Fords.
The "help" from MS is mostly geared to help newer users with newly-arising issues related to new hardware or new software not working right with the current Win OS. People with legacy OS's and legacy hardware usually have the bugs worked out, and don't need much help.
My suggestion to Donald Trump: offer Microsoft a juicy one-time tax write-off if they donate WinXp, and all the archived developmental code, etc. to the open-source community. Let XP become open-source, as a stable-mate to Linux, with MS now completely off the hook as to supporting it.

Ugh, that happened to me earlier today - stepped away from my laptop for ~10 min only to see a message "Windows 10 Upgrade 7% complete" when I returned. Immediately shut it off, but had to restart it numerous times (kept getting dark screen), then it finally restored Windows 7 (took about 20 min once it started).

Cold, windy, rainy day here. But the moisture is much-needed by the farmers, so no complaints. I got my gutted-out defunct motorhome pushed to its final resting place today, with the aid of a friend who steered it while I pushed with the tractor.
Then I went into the garage, and sorted several boxes and coffee cans full of random washers and bolts. Muffin tins make wonderful receptacles to sort into. This makes the sorted hardware more readily available for use, and also clears up bench space, since the containers of unsorted hardware

On my Destroyer... we'd take 30 degree rolls and not really care... On the LPH I was on (Helicopter Carrier) a 30 degree was dangerous to the crew... because some of the ladderwells were near the Hull, not the centerline.... so it would be traveling up and down a realllllyyyy long ways.
so on a big wide cruise ship... while that stateroom with the patio might be cool if the weather is nice??? If you hit any heavy seas... they would suck...

Well, to be fair, the ships served different roles. The liners were built to get from Point A to Point B as fast as reasonably possible, with the largest payload reasonably possible. Cruise ships are floating resorts; comfort is prioritized over speed, and comfort demands room. Liner passengers were like airline passengers; the majority of them willing to put up with some degree of discomfort to get across the ocean ASAP, for the least money spent. Cruise ship passengers are all going for comfort and amenities, and how much they get is based on what they can afford. No "steerage" on a cruise ship.

There are certain wave inputs from certain headings which a particular ship design can deal with perfectly well. Other and different inputs, less so.
Parametric rolling is basically the worst-case scenario for a given ship.
Where it's unable to right itself from one wave before another one arrives and amplifies the effect of the previous wave. And with things like resonant frequency in the mix.
There are photos and videos of cruise ships and car carriers that have had a bout of parametric rolling, and stuff inside is just *trashed* afterwards. On cruise ships, things like banquet tables and pianos going walkabout in the lounges and smashing the crap out of everything in their way.

In 93 the wife and I went on our first cruise, it was on the Nordic Empress, which Jim mentioned. At the time, it was the crown jewel cruise ship. In 2000, we went on our second cruise on the Voyager of The Seas. Totally different cruise experience. The staterooms are now much larger, even the lowest priced rooms.

Wouldn't the appropriate response to that be to put the bow into the weather, and take the waves on the bow? I know sometimes proximity to rocks and lee shores make that impractical, in which case put the stern to the weather and try to make enough speed to surf the swells.

Until, that is, they figured out to "randomize" the arrangements of the baffles, in terms of spacing, angles and through-passage sizes from one baffle to the next.
There have been some fascinating large scale tank experiements on underwater hull effects, with devices such as vortex generators, high-volume air-bubble nozzles and all kinds of other sorcery to keep a given ship atop the waves.
That they've not found much more useful than Stabilizers, astounds me, but then, I'm not a hydromacist, naval architect or the like.
And it's been more than a year since my last stay in a Holiday Inn Express, too.

I honestly am surprised that there hasn't been a case yet where one of these very tall cruise ships hasn't come back from a deep roll. Poseidon Adventure indeed.
Also, hearkening back to the discussions of the Zumwalts earlier in the thread, also topheavy, with weird hull forms -- their seakeeping qualities are going to be very interesting to observe once they actually get out to the open Pacific (where they will all operate), instead of relatively calm inshore Atlantic waters (where the acceptance trials had been run).

Note the embedded space after the date. It seems to have saved everyone but you. I try to break up links in order to protect Morons on phones, and have successfully managed to reduce complaints to....just you. If you can figure out why your phone's maximum capacity is less than other folks', I'll try to tweak things so you don't go sideways.
And, BTW, I've given-up using tinyurl because it's too easy to impersonate a regular and link to malware. I had polymorphic malware with a keylogger dropped on me in a link that existed for only a few minutes before it was killed by management.

Although I have since heard from other sources that at the (not discussed) safe max operating depth of certain U.S. Navy subs, some storms really are strong enough to discomfit the crew. Which is impressive.

I was aboard a semi-submersible drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico during a strong gale, with swells. It didn't roll, much. Different hitch, on a drill ship, different storm, it rolled; a lot. Didn't get seasick, though!

not my favorite of her books) called "One Blood" which I liked quite a
bit more.
I may have to re-read "Scent of Metal" because I
think I may have missed a bit, but I had a hard time visualizing the
story (I'm one of those readers that see a movie in my head as I'm
reading, and some of the wilder flights of fancy are hard to visualize).

any rate, a good book and another plus in my library. I have several
authors that I will read anything they write, Sabrina Chase is one of
them.

My late Dad was a Chief (ICC bubblehead) in WESPAC at the same time. By then though, he was out of Fast Attack, and on the Gold Crew aboard the USS John Quincy Adams, his last sea-berth.
Alas, he suffered a heart-attack when ashore at Pearl Harbor, and after a year at Walter Reed, then a couple years shore duty as an instructor in San Diego, he was retired after 24 years service.
He passed in Jan 2010, and I miss him still.
But, read that story in the link.
Submarine sailors have, then and now The Right Stuff. Period, full stop, end of story.

It's weird stuff.
I was out on a sailing boat in NorCal in very heavy weather, where an experienced mate was completely incapable, and I was fine with it. A month later, I was out in a motorized vessel, in the same waters, in similar conditions, and I was miserable. Chummed off the stern impressively.
What was the difference? A faceful of diesel exhaust at the wrong moment.
