I love amusement park rides but after a particularly scary experience at the local fair, I no longer ride the rides at those portable fairs. This is one reason why:Here's something your kids will love.
If you are so inclined, there are videos on You Tube as to how you can make it yourself. Fan-cee! Horse groomer takes trimming to a whole other level. Behold. Feeling frisky? Ten office pranks that probably won't get you fired. With frightening accuracy, as usual.
Ain't that the truth? One of my favorite videos to surface since Prince's death. Enjoy. That's it for tonight. Oh, and P.S., this ONT brought to you by men who served us well. Thinking of Mr. Bennett this evening. Will there ever be another? Oh, and I'm a bit off as to the ONT coverage for tonight, so don't be completely caught off guard if another pops up later. When I was a teenager, my friends and I worked setting up and tearing down the rides at one of those portable fairs every year when it came to town. The regular carnies directed us of course, but they wanted the extra muscle and just someone to do grunt work. We would also work in the stalls on the midway during the week that the fair was in town. It was good money for a teen. Probably illegal these days. Might have even been illegal then.

The California State Senate approved an anti-gun bill today. The primary news about the bill is that it will require background checks for ammunition purchases. But there are a whole host of other amendments and items that are part of the bill.
To great hilarity, I noted that one of the amendments on the bill had been proposed by former State Senator Leland Yee (D). Yee, as some of you may recall, was busted by the FBI for arms smuggling. And not just namby-pamby AKs. No, he was apparently buying RPGs from MILF (that's the Filipino terrorist group, you pervs....), meaning that he was consorting with Islamic terrorists. That apparently rates you five years in the pokey, btw. So our good former State Senator Mr. Yee was not only smuggling weapons into the country, but also making it harder for citizens to lawfully purchase them. What a hypocrite. Or maybe it was just good business to him? Maybe he figured that with the legal avenues all cut off, more people would turn to him instead? Posted by: junior at May 19, 2016 11:24 PM (+ULUe) 121

According to CDC the average weight of and height of an American woman is 5'3" and 160 lbs. The average weight of a US soldier going into combat would be about 45 lbs., and in some cases may approach 100 lbs. So a woman going into an immediate combat situation may be required to carry over one fourth of her body weight into a firefight.
No offense ladies, but the first time that the guy next you loses his head to a heavy round, you'll probably get hysterical when you see that. A guy may puke and be scared, but I think that most women would be rendered combat ineffective at that sight. The majority of the men, after a brief moment to puke, would probably get back in the fight. I think the majority of women would either freeze up or run. So therefore, after all that, I say let's go ahead, draft women and transgendered and what not. After all, if it's all going to hell in a handbasket, let's give them what they want. Well, we got to see my mother for another appointed hour today. She was better, but no better than yesterday. And she wasn't wanting to eat much again today. When we got there, they'd just brought her supper tray. She'd picked at it, and ate a few bites and the declared she couldn't eat anymore.
Well, I got the knife and fork and just started cutting it up and then spoon fed it to her. She'd protest but eat everything I put in her mouth. It was sort of pitiful. I had a profound, wistful thought: the circle is complete. 48-49 years ago, she was doing that for me, a little publius, and now I'm doing it for her. The circle is complete. Now, since yesterday, they'd brought in two more patients and they were sitting at the same table as my mother. They were nice enough, but it was obvious they were batshit. Apparently both of them were abused women, husbands beating them, and had driven them crazy. I heard then talking, as they watched me feed my mother, wondering if I would beat women. Also, wondering about my father. It's sad, I guess. That's all they knew. I really don't like my mother in there with them like that, but it's fairly supervised I think. Tilikum, I'm pushing 64 and if push were to come to shove, I'd be toast. Figure 10 lbs for a rifle, say 5 lbs for ammo, and 30 lbs for body armor, and my old out of shape body (too much smoking and drinking) would be hard pressed to run 50 yards. Add to that helmet, bayonet, first aid kit, canteen, grenades, and maybe having to schlepp rpgs, mortar rounds, or belt fed ammo, and I'm going to die in the first 50 feet. That's why old people send young people to war.

Surprised someone hasn't tried to do a Las Vegas crime drama, but in the style of "Miami Vice."
There was that stupid Vegas show that was out a few years ago, that supposedly took place around 1955. I think the plot of every episode was: - Crime committed in Vegas - Featherhead police force can't solve it - They go to Mr. Tough Guy main character - He goes out and beats up a lot of tough guys - "Here's your man, chief!" Some TV producers, it doesn't matter how much things change; they're gonna keep spoon-feeding audiences the same ol' rancid crapola that was beyond tiresome 40 years ago, 'til they're literally six feet under. Here's the deal, I am buying body armor and it will be about 30 pounds by itself. That is BEFORE a rifle or ANY ammo/supplies. I don't know many women who can handle that. Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale at May 19, 2016 11:55 PM (hVdx9) 30 pounds of armor doesn't feel like much when you're wearing it. I spent almost all of my free time in my 20s doing SCA stuff. It may not be the exact same kind of armor, but if your armor is well-fitted, you barely even notice it. I've met plenty of women who can fight while wearing that much armor, or more. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at May 20, 2016 12:24 AM (HalrA) 286

@335 One of the things that's really getting tiresome is the way, even today, gay characters are presented on television. They're always super-attractive, ridonkulously sassy, and all but scream "I'M GAY!!!!!" every 15 seconds.
I know for a fact most gay people aren't anything like how they're portrayed on TV. They have zero interest in drag, mind their own business and have bills to pay and issues to worry about like everyone else. ----------------- There are exceptions. The Flash has two known gay characters. Capt. Singh, the head of the police station, is pretty low-key. He's gay. He doesn't beat people over the head with it. If he hadn't mentioned his boyfriend a couple of times (the first time was to complain about said boyfriend forcing him to watch his weight), you likely wouldn't know. IIRC, the only time said boyfriend has appeared onscreen so far is when Singh ended up in the hospital. Apparently the show's writers are smart enough to recognize that they shouldn't let Singh's sexual orientation distract from the superheroics. Hartley Rathaway is possibly the more interesting one, though. And I'm somewhat surprised that the LGBT crowd hasn't whined about him (or maybe they have; it's not like I check to see). Rathaway is known in the comic books as Pied Piper. And like Singh, he's gay in both the comics and the TV series. When he's introduced in a first season episode, he's an arrogant jerk that no one likes. He's smart, he knows it, and he wants to make sure that everyone else knows it. He's gay. He knows that he can use his sexuality to annoy people. And he doesn't get along with his very rich parents. We're left to guess that it's because of his sexuality. He's also the bad guy of the episode that he appears in. During season two, Flash ends up traveling back in time one year to when Rathaway appeared, and ends up changing the timeline when Flash preemptively brings an end to Rathaway's plans before the episode's new threat appears. Rathaway teams up with the good guys to put a stop to the episode's new threat, and Flash returns to his starting point, one year later. When Flash arrives at when he started, he's shocked to discover that Rathaway is now a fairly decent guy. And he happens to have dinner plans that night... with his parents. Ergo, one takeaway from this character is - If you're gay and having fights with your parents, maybe it's not your sexual orientation that's to blame. Maybe it's just you! One of the things that was really appealing about the show Everybody Loves Raymond, was Robert and his relationship troubles. And it was obvious he envied Raymond's life, which was also IMHO quite realistic.
Of course, by the end of the show he had solved those issues by marrying Amy (played by Monica Horan). Still, at least the writers were smart enough to make his transition extremely awkward as well as funny. IMHO some shows appear to be written by people who've actually *left* Hollywood and had to make it in the real world, and some shows appear to be written by people whose whole lives have been a Hollywood fairy tale. I actually feel sorry for the characters and don't find it "sexy" at all. Years ago when Modern Family started, about midway through the first season, the SJW's had a big "Let Mitch and Cam Kiss" campaign. They didn't get the characters at all. It wasn't that they didn't kiss, it was that this is a "documentary" type of show with cameramen following them around, and Mitchell is probably the most high strung guy in the world, and he is someone with a really hard time showing affection. If you watched his interactions with his dad and sister, you would have seen that, but..... they didn't kiss because the writers were too afraid to do it. IIRC, when they finally did kiss, they turned it into an episode showing how much Mitchell hated showing affection towards anyone. Gere has had a whole career as a leading man. For him to come out now would mean he would have to admit he's been lying this whole time, plus he would have to change his fan base. Why take a risk when he can easily get work as a leading man? Plus, I think he already does well with the GBLT crowd, so I don't know if he would get anything extra from that direction anyway.
Page had a couple of hits, but nothing like Gere's profile. I don't think she was a has been, more like a minor star. But, I haven't really followed her, so maybe coming out helped her. They were as messed up as everyone else, but they weren't portrayed as hypocrites. Posted by: qdpsteve at May 20, 2016 01:45 AM (ntObR) ------------------------ Yep. I remember an evangelical friend of mine complaining about them being portrayed as too uptight and Bible-thumpy. But as I pointed out to her, they still came across as somewhat more decent than the Barones. In most programs the Christians are just made fun of and portrayed as inferiors. In ELR they're....human. The Big Bang Theory also has done (relatively) well with Sheldon's mother. You know, if you like the behind-the-scenes stuff, about how the sausage is "really" made, check out "Unknown Chaplin" sometime. The thing is - Chaplin filmed all his rehearsals, and the rehearsals are really where he "wrote" his films. There are scenes where he's playing one character for takes 1 - 10. The from 11- 25 he's another character. You can literally see the scenes evolve.
One of the most famous. He spent some 20 or so takes doing a scene in a restaurant. Then he decides - this shouldn't be the first scene - this should be the last scene. That's The Immigrant. Posted by: Vertov at May 20, 2016 02:00 AM (RTOcO) 441

"Apparently, lawyers, somewhere in the halls of the Justice Department whose identities are unknown to this court, decided unilaterally that the conduct of the DHS in granting three-year DACA renewals using the 2014 DHS directive was immaterial and irrelevant to this lawsuit and that the DOJ could therefore just ignore it," Hanen wrote. "Then, for whatever reason, the Justice Department trial lawyers appearing in this Court chose not to tell the truth about this DHS activity. The first decision was certainly unsupportable, but the subsequent decision to hide it from the Court was unethical."
Hanen seemed to lament that he couldn't disbar the attorneys involved, but he barred the out-of-state attorneys from enjoying the right to practice law in Texas. "The court does not have the power to disbar the counsel in this case, but it does have the power to revoke the pro hac vice status of out-of-state lawyers who act unethically in court," he wrote. During one 25-minute interview on Thursday, among the few the likely Democratic nominee has granted, she was asked about Trump a dozen times. That's an average of once every two minutes, and doesn't even count the number of times Clinton mentioned the presumptive Republican nominee unprompted to make a point.
This wasn't an accident, but a result of Trump's deliberate communications strategy to flood the zone. In the Republican primary, the New York businessman's ubiquitous presence on television, and social media, primarily Twitter, helped sink an experienced field of opponents. They were constantly off balance and on defense -- and being forced to respond to Trump reinforced an image among GOP voters that the real estate mogul was the only candidate offering solutions to their problems. So if there's a war over the war on women, it will definitely be waged by and against both major parties.
"Sexism is not limited to one political party or the other," said Susan Carroll, a professor of political science and women's and gender studies at New Jersey's Rutgers University. "It clearly manifests itself across the political spectrum." And Democrats gave two prime examples this week. Rendell, in an interview with The Washington Post, said Trump's comments about women will backfire on him because "There are probably more ugly women in America than attractive women." So, use your imagination. Posted by: Tim in Illinois. at May 20, 2016 05:31 AM (WVsWD) 482
As civilizations advance, they rely upon ever-more-complex systems to survive. The side-effect of the successful deployment of these system is the survival of those who - under more austere conditions - would starve to death.
Consequently, the better we get at carrying on, the more difficult it becomes to do so. Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at May 20, 2016 05:43 AM (lutOX) 483
The resources required to maintain this complexity are necessarily finite, whereas the needs of the otherwise-boned masses are inversely proportional to their ability to produce them.

Morning Vic. Thanks for the depression I'm glad the NFL paid the money back. We shouldn't have to pay for patriotism. Posted by: RWC - Team TTBTFW at May 20, 2016 06:24 AM (SuWs0) 521
I went ahead and watched Master and Commander yesterday. I didn't think it was that good of a film, sorry. I am glad that I elected to get the $5 DVD instead of the $30 Bluray.

Posted by: RWC - Team TTBTFW at May 20, 2016 06:24 AM (SuWs0) The intent of those performances was not to engender "patriotism", it was advertising for Army recruitment. But even if it had been "for patriotism" I object to how it was cancelled and the funds returned. They should not have surrendered to a bunch of whiners. mean clean the sidewalks of the scummiest past of SF. Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at May 20, 2016 06:27 AM (1ijHg) I assume that was a typo, I would like for them to try to clean the "scummy past" of SF but that would be hard. But if you meant the scummy sidewalks, yeah since they are also public bathrooms in SF. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 20, 2016 06:32 AM (vvmPQ) 525

Actually, Big Bang Theory's Sheldon was definitely a virgin until quite recently. His remarks after Amy finally got him into be made that clear.
If you look up the unaired pilot (it can be found on torrent sites and maybe it's on one of the DVD sets) the original versions of the characters were somewhat different. The opening scene had them making donations at a high IQ sperm bank for extra money and the jokes made it clear that Sheldon had some very specific desires in women that were unsatisfied by the pornography offered to donors. The Howard and Raj characters didn't exist and the female lead was completely different, being a rather nastier sort of girl that that Sheldon and Leonard take in like a stray dog. Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Here are a couple of pix of the Ziegfeld girl Adrienne Ames. First, a studio portrait where she's got a bit of the Nora Charles look: http://goo.gl/sFbxbl And what may be a movie still, where she's doing a Greta Garbo bit: http://goo.gl/E1QXEM Ames wasa Texas lady, born in Fort Worth and after her Ziegfeld stint, moved over to silent pictures, starting out as a stand in for the temperamental star Pola Negri. But by the late 1930s, her career had fizzled out, so she moved to NYC and, according to wiki, hosted a talk radio show on station WHN until dying in 1947. I'm in the N. Panhandle of WV and last night was the first night of the zombie cicada parade...they've been telling us they are on the way, but after the warm sunny day yesterday, Oh My! Home from a school event in the early evening, there was a literal parade of creatures crawling towards the large oak trees on the street. Looking at our yard, it looked like it had just been aerated, but those little dirt clods were all crawling and moving. Many of them don't make it, and die on the sidewalk. What a mess. Not as bad (yet) as I had imagined, but I think it's still going to get worse. They haven't starting 'singing' yet, so nights are still quiet. Stuff of nightmares for this west coast city girl, I tell ya... Posted by: RedDish at May 20, 2016 07:12 AM (5eXg1) 540

"Never heard that." Yeah. Me neither. Hubby used to tell me about them from his childhood memories. Ugh. I guess they hibernate for 17 years, hatch, emerge, shed their skin (yucky skeletons all over the place), lay eggs and die. I can't imagine what this would be like in the rural areas. Thinking I might head to a Pittsburgh mall so I can be surrounded by comforting concrete.

Posted by: Jean at May 20, 2016 06:22 AM (Doh4+) ----------------------------------------------- Totally right. She spoke at one of my kids graduations and, in front of the whole crowd, the kids, parents, and proud grandparents, she proceeded to kick things off by telling the story of having sex with her boyfriend right on the same spot where the speakers podium stood that day. TMI just doesn't even begin to cover that little nugget. What a tool. Posted by: MTF at May 20, 2016 07:40 AM (/m8T6) 555

Dang! I spent a month in Chennai last summer, but the only amusement ride I took was on a camel. Intercity trains are an adventure as well. I rode 4 hours in a 90 seat coach with over 250 people. They were even sitting in the overhead luggage racks. I'm glad someone didn't plop down in my lap. Well.. if she were pretty enough it would be OK.
